- Breaking Down the Stick Episode 1: Qanba Drone
The inaugural episode of Breaking Down the Stick by JasensCustoms.com! I dive deep into the Qanba Drone and reveal the inner-workings, point out some mod points, and offer my opinions on what you can and should do to upgrade this fight stick. If you are curious about the latency or the more commonly, and improperly used term "lag", I didn't test that. There are a variety of reasons, but the most important is there isn't a widely accepted method of doing it consistently and accurately. There are a couple efforts that will provide empirical data regarding response time of the system and I am following them closely for future episodes and tests.
Without further ado, here are my basic findings and grades:
Basic Modding: A
You can easily change the lever, buttons, and balltop with basic tools. You need a phillips and flat head screw driver and everything after that is easy.
Basic modding is considered: Lever swap, Button Swap
Advanced Modding: D/F
There isn't much room to work and the single PCB that is sandwiched at the top of the case makes tapping into signal lines difficult.
Advanced Modding is considered: Adding pad-hacks, various fighting board upgrades, or LEDs.
Panel swaps: Not possible due to the plastic construction of the top panel.
Be sure to subscribe and watch future episodes of BTDS. As usual, it only gets better from here! I hope to be upgrading to a 4K camera shortly and may likely move the "set" to somewhere more audio recording friendly. Check me out:

Another great vid, man. "If you think I'm a boob", man, I haven't heard someone use the term that way since "He-Man: and the Masters of the Universe" back in the 80s..
Ah, retro Skeletor, never change..
3:48 You crushed my heart
Thanks you for this breakdown. Answered my question before I could even ask it. I recently put a Crown lever in my rap4 and was gonna try to put the hayabusa in my drone lol
Newegg has this for 40 after a coupon code. It's decent after all the parts swaps. I had a spare sanwa lever so this is my "leave in the car trunk spare stick"
Do you happen to have that coupon code still?
love when he says forward like FOW-ard.
It's a fair stick for who is starting in this world or needs something at a lower price range. That's all
Would you happen to know what kind of phillips screws the six on the outside are? I'm doing a Sanwa mod on my Drone and discovered that I was missing a screw.
I swap my madcatz TE2+ for this one, ofc modified with sanwa parts and dude, I promise i will never come back to the big and fancy big stick because for travel they are a nightmare. The size doesn´t feel uncomfortable comparing with a big one, is stable and is so easy to carry with. Don think bigger is better, especially if you wanna travel this kind of arcade stick with sanwa are the best in my opinion.
Fantastic video Jasen. So good to have a reference to be able to send your friends or new players too. If you are looking for suggestions, I'd say to maybe use a lapel mic and some kind of recording device (or the mic input of your camera if it has that) during the room shots to get audio quality similar to to bits where you are talking during the photos and maybe alleviate some echo. You covered just about everything I could think of. Can't wait to see future videos. I already own a VLX but I'm super interested to hear your take on it.
I agree with the audio. There was a secondary mic that I had off to the left that had better audio but wasn't syncing to the video properly. The work flow is still in its infancy, so it will get better and I expect the format to get tweaks over time. Thanks for the feedback!
so im trying to do a custom build for a 2nd stick n the only thing i have for reference is this and I HATE the sensitivity of the lever what would you guys say is the grommet equivalent so i can avoid it lol
I mean...I punch my shit a lot when I rage and it still works XD I recommend people who buy this stick to mod these after a while though, the buttons do stick. I might stick to the drone until I'm ready to switch. Don't know what stick to get but I think I might build one, looks fun. Great video btw Jasen, love your stuff.
does your drone still work
@@thosebastards4279 Yeah I modded it a year ago though, I bought 4 more sticks since then but the drone is still a really good beginner stick.
Awesome video! Totally agree with your review and it's also great to hear specific parts mentioned. Was also really good to get some insight on how it is to mod. Really hope you keep up the series, I'll definitely check them all out. Definitely interested in seeing the internals of the Qanba Dragon and Obsidian, and also the new HRAP if you happen to have them around. As for other video suggestions, I think it would be really cool to have some more advanced modding tutorials, like how to wire up turbo panels or quad mod commercial sticks. Keep up the awesome work though!
Thanks for the comment! Over time I hope to do some Quick Mod featurettes that speak to basic modding techniques that are stick independent.
A buddy of mine just got this stick. I'm sure hell be modifying it.
If you wanted to mod this stick into a Hitbox, could you just daisy chain the 4 new buttons' ground wires to the ground pin where the stick connector goes? (shown at 4:28)
Yes, but thats a lot of hassle for such a cheaply made stick. All that plastic needs to be cut and its not even setup for the proper 24mm hitbox layout.
Thanks so much for your reply! I wanted to give it a shot since I already have a drone, buttons and the tools lying around, and since $200+ for a real hitbox is a bit steep for me :)
Great job on making such a thorough guide, this really helps!
You could do that with literally any stick yeah
4:38 which JST connectors do they use? Can't find the information anywhere for the life of me
i was trying to remove the pcb screws but its too strong >>> any idea?
What's the screws head size? (the ones at the bottom of the case)
It would be nice if you could have a breakdown of the Qanba Q1W wireless arcade stick thanks...
I bought this arcade stick, worked fine like for a month then
The cons started having joystick problems, the either then that it's very light,
Qanba's buttons are okay, but they are really hollow and crappy.
Is it possible to change or replace any art for the face lf the stick or is there not a place for that?
emmgee282 - nope; it’s all integrated into the plastic top panel.
Jasen Hicks ahh thats unfortunate
Guess thatd mean id have to apply it as a decal instead.
Do you reccomend any semi affordable sticks with the ability to switch out art
Doesnt have to be super high end nor cheap
mayflash f500
Would you recommend this as first arcade stick? I dont want to spend money at this point, im still testing the water at this point in terms of fighting games.
This was my first stick I bought it for 70$( it's gone down to 60$ as of today) it's a decent stick. the joystick does become very lose later on, but it's still playable. After 4 months of using the stick I finally change the joystick with a Sanwa JLF and it's feels great. people say that the buttons feel cheap, but This is my first stick so I don't know exactly what quality buttons feel like, bit these buttons are very responsive and as of today they are still responsive. However, I feel like later in the future I will have to challenge buttons with new ones.Don't let the " changing the parts" discouraged you. Any stick you buy even the good ones need to change the parts later down the line. however you may want to change the parts for the quanba drone quicker than the others because the quanba drone haves cheap parts by default.
Please input delay test comparatives. Great video
Pliskin - see the description on "latency" testing and why I don't do it.
How do I use a wired headset with this???
Does the options, ps, share etc. buttons fall out when removing the pcb? I'm quite hesitant to remove the pcb to solder directly my joystick
You do not need to solder to the PCB; you can just use wire nuts and splice the harness it comes with with the JLF harness. I guess you posted this a year ago so maybe you've already finished your project but anyways.
I think if you already have a stick you shouldn't get this. this is a good player 2 stick and the perfect introduction stick for it's price.
I picked it up because lugging a heavy stick on the train to locals kinda sucks and I had replacement parts lying around.
I also added a PhreakMods link so it's really the last answer in portability
I cant switch the 4 gate to an 8 basically..?
Just to be clear, if the PCB has issues for any reason and I am beyond the warranty period, it would be hard to replace the PCB myself? Like if I wanted to replace the manufacturer PCB with something like a Brook PCB kit PCB.
Its probably doable, though space is tight.
Ah. I assume it would also be difficult to find a way to have the options button set up with a new PCB too?
Yeah, its going to be tough. Honestly, once it dies... its probably better/easier to get a new stick. I recommend the Panzer Fight Stick 3 :)
Breaking Down the Stick QANBA DRAGON
It's a good beginner stick if you wanna take fighting games seriously.
😀
My only issue with this is "Quality" ; painting sucks, and the rest is "OK"
