I still haven't had guppies even though they're so beautiful! I did FINALLY get my first livebearers (platys!) a few months ago and set up a 44 gallon so I'll have room for plenty of babies. I've been thinking of adding guppies to Platy Paradise; we'll see!
I have a 40 gallon tank that I call the guppy tank. I started that tank 15 years ago with 8 guppies (I don’t remember the ratio). I wasn’t planning on breeding a specific strain, so I picked out all the “pretty ones.” So my guppy tank is a mutt guppy tank. This tank is full of a variety of guppies and it is always the favorite whenever people come, over and look at my tanks. This tank has also taught me everything about fish keeping. I learned good filtration, water parameters, breeding, etc from this tank. This tank is now over populated because I can’t find anyone who wants some of my mutt guppies. My LFS will take them to sell as feeder fish, but I can’t. So, I had to figure out how to keep an overpopulated tank healthy. I have a big filtration system on the guppy tank with loads of biological media. I figured out that in order to grow both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, I needed a water conditioner that removed only chlorine and chloramine because the stuff in water conditioners that neutralizes ammonia and nitrites kills off anaerobic bacteria and I need anaerobic bacteria to remove nitrates. Since I have a huge biological filtration system and a deep substrate I have plenty of aerobic bacteria to handle the ammonia and nitrites kills off in the system. I also learned that an over planted tank that has a ton of fast growing plants helps remove nitrates too. The result is my parameters are almost always ammonia and nitrites 0 and nitrates are < 20ppm. I have enough filtration so I can do water changes every month to two months and my filter only needs cleaning about every 4 months. Something I then observed with this tank is that guppies have an upper limit in breeding. They somehow know when to slow or stop their breeding when they hit a certain ratio of guppies to size of water body. I don’t know how they know, maybe a pheromone, but I have seen my tank cycle in number of guppies and breeding activity. The guppies will go crazy breeding and at some point known only to them, they will slow down breeding and will even stop breeding, then the population stops growing and slowly shrinks in size to a point when all of a sudden the guppies will once again start reproducing. I would have never seen this cycle, had I not had my overpopulated, over planted, over filtered guppy tank for the last 15 years. All I know is I have seen this population growth and decline happen quite a few time over the last 15 years. It takes at least 5 years to even realize there is a cycle, then to confirm what is happening took even longer. Right now the tank has just plateaued in breeding and they have paused their breeding. For the last year I have seen huge numbers of babies in the tank, but in this last couple of months the babies have disappeared and even the juveniles have all grown up. I have a ton of adults, but very few younger fish. The numbers will start dwindling and eventually the tank will get to a point where I actually start worrying about their natural attrition. The first time I saw this,mi thought I was loosing my colony. It is generally at the colony low point I introduce new guppies into the tank to bring in new DNA to help mitigate the inbreeding. I am not sure this would work for anyone else, but it works for me and my 40 gallon (more like 50 gallons with the filtration) guppy tank.
You the OG in the fish community. You fill your videos with good info and good tips , no complicating stuff , just straight facts and experience and passion
I've never had guppies and probably never will. But I absolutely loved this video. Especially considering my experience on the FB page where SOOOOO many folks do not understand how to establish a tank and run it with any confidence. I have been doing this for decades so much of it seems basic to me, BUT looking at this from a new comer's perspective, there really is a learning curve most of us have forgotten about. Of course you change your water - but how much, how often, buckets, pythons, dechlorinator, how much, when, etc. Plants have added a whole NEW learning curve. Size of tank that is best, what filter to use, when do you clean them, how often, how to. Best light, best filter, best air pump? Man, I'm surprised anyone new ever stays in the hobby!! These videos take out SO much of the "mystery" of fish keeping. Thanks Cory.
Just did this last week in a 10gal. Mixed my HARD well water with softened water to just make it mildly hard. Black background with black sand. Fake green plants. Small sponge filter and a WELL seasoned aqeon HOB.
I would love to get into guppies (and other livebearers) but right now all i have is a 10gallon and wont be able to get another or bigger tank for a few more years yet. My question, is there anyway to limit /slowdown how many babies they have so my tank doesnt get over crowded?
3:08 Cory sell int intake cover to adapt to any filter my hang on back edge has this issue where the sponge is too corse they don’t provide a replacement id like to use you’res but it don’t adapt
Hey Cory, I have a light that runs a cycle. Comes on at 6am mimicking sunrise and at 6pm cycles to a blue light mimicking moon light, and shuts off at 10pm. I don’t have issues with algae and my plants are rally healthy. Is that too much light?
I have one female in a tank with a gourami alone with shrimp and she gave birth and has over populated the tank by herself 😂 I can’t believe it. They are beautiful fish but boy they can crowd a tank in no time all.
Nope, you wouldn't need to dilute down the water, they'll take the super hard water. They can even go brackish which usually has tons of minerals in it.
Guppies are my favorite as well. I currently have 6 males in a 10 gallon. I don't want babies. I used to have 110 gallon with thousands of babies. I don't want to to deal with babies as the fish store rarely takes them in.
After platies I was going to stay away from livebearers, now I need crowd control for my endlers. Any fish that could help crowd control (heavily planted) without eating all the orange pumpkins? That's the one downside to livebearers after you get too many too often there's no one left to pass them on to.
I still keep a healthy population but a few in my 65 gallon always show signs of being unwell I've used salt blue die and multiple pet store recommended products
Is anyone here familiar with China mark moth larvae? wanna ask if there are any fish that feeds on them, it's such a hassle to trim plants every time there's an infestation
It has been my experience that chain pet stores have cleaner nicer tanks than small privately owned fish stores. Chain pet stores have clearly marked tanks with info about the fish. Small privately owned fish stores barley even mark the tank what is in it. Good luck even getting a name to google it.

I always come back to guppies. I currently have a 75 gallon planted tank with TONS of guppies, I love it!

It’s hard to find something so small and so beautiful and with so much personality as a Guppy!
Super awesome video 👍👍
Great tips Cory! Guppies are basically my favorite fish too! I currently have 15 breeding tanks of them.
Oh wow that’s awesome

Love guppies and endlers. My absolute ❤
You read my mind! I've kept goldfish and tetras for over 10 years now, I've been wanting to give guppies a try. Thank you for this video!!
Love the good ok Guppy videos!!!!!!! my favorite fish, i have a 20 gal of all guppies and shrimp 😊
Thank You For Your Time!!! :)
I guess I'm going to get another tank. I've got to try this. Thanks Cory for the inspiration.😂

Great information
I love guppies!
Excellent!
I missed having guppies and recently got back into them again. I've already had 3 batches of babies.
Guppies are the best!
I agree!
i legitimately thought this was just going to be you pouring water into a ten gallon and walking away 😂
Do you put anything under the coral, like a substrate, for the plants?
Just did this last week in a 10gal. Mixed my HARD well water with softened water to just make it mildly hard. Black background with black sand. Fake green plants. Small sponge filter and a WELL seasoned aqeon HOB.
Thank you
Hi Cory, do you have a forum where we can ask you questions about fish keeping?
We do, register a name and you can post here: forum.aquariumcoop.com/
Can someone help me? As a member where can I post pics of my aquatic plants and ask questions. I'm a beginner
You can do that on our forum. It's a great place for that. forum.aquariumcoop.com/ You sign up with a user name and then can post.
Can someone help me figure out how as a member can I get help with my aquatic plants. Where can I send pics and ask questions??
How do you raise rhinogobius fish from the initial stage to the following stages?

I'm not sure what you're asking for here. Our pre filters do fit all hang on back filter inlets basically.
@ the plastic
Fluval edge filter seems to be way smaller

My water is extremely hard, my guppies Love it.

Definitely true lol
Quite true about the overcrowding
In the beginning of video what size tank guppies where in
20 gallon aquarium.
@AquariumCoop thank you
I have very hard well water, if I cut it with 1/2 distilled water and 1/2 well water my gh is 15 and kh is 10. Is my water still too hard for guppies?
Nope, you wouldn't need to dilute down the water, they'll take the super hard water. They can even go brackish which usually has tons of minerals in it.

I’d use a sponge filter, java moss and just let them keep making more
I traded 10 cherry shrimp🦐 for 2 pregnant female guppies on FB Marketplace just to see what came out. Turned out to be blue/orange Endlers .
Congrats! Endlers are less line bred and hardier anyway.

What went wrong with your platies?
@MWilk098 too many fry, couldn't find enough people to take them (free). The egg breeders don't reproduce so fast when you do get fry 🙂
these days how many shrimp types do you personally have.
!GUPPIES!🎉
How can I get rid of ick and the waisting desese my guppys have been plagued with these two for years despite my efforts it's always came back
I still keep a healthy population but a few in my 65 gallon always show signs of being unwell I've used salt blue die and multiple pet store recommended products
Have you dewormed your fish? I'd try to paracleanse or prazi pro to start for deworming.
@@AquariumCoop okay that's a road I haven't went down yet thank you sir
Is anyone here familiar with China mark moth larvae? wanna ask if there are any fish that feeds on them, it's such a hassle to trim plants every time there's an infestation
I started with 1 male and 2 females a year ago, and now I have guppies coming out of my ears 😂
