  • The 41 Special is unique in that it is the only cartridge that was reverse engineered from a Magnum round - the 41 Magnum. Previously, reloaders shortened 41 Magnum brass to create the Special. But Starline now makes commercial brass for the 41 Special. But there is no published reloading data for the 41 Special. Dave K is asking for reloading data...

    What's really nice about the .41 Special is many ranges, especially those with handgun steel plate shooting, do not allow magnum loads. So for years I couldn't use my M-58, even though I used SWC Rem. and Win. Police loads which are about
    959 fps. All because the Magnum stamped on the cases.

    .41 Special data is available from Handloader Magazine Issue #305 and issue #269. Issue #305 has a lot of data while issue #269 has very limited data.

      fishinkeylargo - Did have HM for a while...along with ST and G&A. But I started collecting big cardboard boxes of those magazines...ran out of storage space...and the internet has so much... fun going back to the old issues though. Thanks for the tip... Best Regards to ya, FC

    Can you trim magnum brass and load heavy bullets in the 41 magnum? Like 300 grains

    Here in 2024 a guntuber managed to find factory .41 special ammo from HMS. He also says .41 brass is available at Starline. He also agrees that a shorter special case is more efficient. Link to the video ruclips.net/video/XR99CDd0jUE/видео.htmlsi=AZxB7TKdIPmZXnQA

    Good advice for anyone who has a .41 Magnum. You and I have discussed how so many over look the positive uses of the parent special cases of the Magnum revolvers. also How in many ways how they are superior to their Magnum offspring offering us a wide door of reloading and shooting for various reasons.

    I looked at the starting load data for 44 Special and the 44 Mag, and figured out the % difference with the same powder, in my case Unique. I also looked at the starting load data for 38 Special and 357 Mag as well and figured out the % difference between them. Surprisingly the % difference was almost the same for 44 and 357 and their Special counterparts, so I reduced the starting Unique load in 41 mag by that same percentage. In the end the more efficient powder burn in the special case does not make up for the accuracy you lose because of the huge bullet jump my bullet had to make before it hit the rifling, went back to my old 8 grain of Unique load in regular 41 mag brass because it shoots better.

    I've been shooting the .41 Mag for 40 years now. And am an avid wildcatter. 1: .41 special brass from Starline actually costs more than .41 mag brass, so I shorten the mag brass myself in a case trimmer. 2: to get my loads, I extrapolated Fromm 44 special data

  • @zivendn
    @zivendn 6 лет назад

    I think the KISS principle should be used. One can easily trim mag brass and for data I'd use 44 Special using similar weight bullets as a starting point and go up or down from there.

    Never heard of Trail Boss till you mentioned it Fortune. I am on the Hodgdon site reading about it now. I love for you to do a video on that on how to properly load ammunition for it, and then what kind of groups and accuracy data you can expect at the range? Also, would it be suitable for rounds for our semi-auto handguns?

    I have a old lee hand loaders loading manual it was from the 1950's or 1960's and was a standard for wildcat loader of the time. However it has more of "learn to reload manual" .

      L Krueger - Always good to hear from L Krueger - Wow, TB powder in the 45 ACP...the 45 ACP case is already an efficient powder space...but yes, TB powder can be used in any caliber...But for maximum economy, Bullseye or Promo (Red Dot) are easy choices. Have a great day, FC Steve

    Very interesting series of videos about the 41 special I have been frustrated with the lack data for this wildcat . So after pouring over load data , crunching the numbers and a lot of range time with a chrono. I've accumulated multiple load recipes for the special. There's not much difference between the internal case fill of41 spec and the 44 spec . compare the two magnum cases for yourself two different calibers same case length. You can trim back magnum cases for a trial run. Or buy special brass from starline or midway usa. Same principle as the 38 spec/357 and the 44spec/44mag the 41 spec works perfectly in the magnum revolvers , Redhawks and smith wesson model 57 those being my trial guns. Be safe my fellow Wildcats

    I would like to see data for 41 spl loads using 41mag brass. I have 2 41 mags . 1 is a Taurus Titanium 4" 5shot of only 24 oz. And would be more comfortable to shoot with light loads. Any ideas you can provide will be helpful. Thanks,
    Dick Timpano

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  7 лет назад

      Dick Timpano - The 41 Spl gains its advantages because of the smaller powder space allows more efficient (translation - more velocity with the smaller powder charges than will yield from the larger magnum case) If you shoot 4 grains of Red Dot or 5 grains of Unique from the Magnum case, you will have less velocity than those in a Special case. You can go up to 7 grains of Unique in your guns to get some very useful power. And then if you need more, the Magnum case takes over and shines. But with the lower performance loadings, the Special shines. Yes, you can load the 41 Magnum down to equal the 44 Special performance, but it will take more powder by an average of 4/10th of a grain or so. Best to ya, FC

    I just did a test fire on my new 7.5" Redhawk 44 that got a tune & trigger job , plated bullets shot not so good , Sierra 180 gr JHP shot much better . I like plated bullets , they are low cost , clean & easy to use ... BUT they are best used for jobs that don't need accuracy , help clean some lead out , sight in ( get you on the paper ) , hip shooting , plinking , fast draw . The load was 44 sp 180 gr Fl Point Barry bullet , med load of unique , almost no crimp . I think some of my other guns / loads / plated bullets did better ??

    Hi fortune cookie. Just an fyi, rainer recommends using jacketed bullet load data. I've done so with 380acp and 9mm luger without any pressure signs or issues. Of course Im just plinking with those reloads so loading a little lighter than jacketed data really doesnt matter. As long as the gun functions Im good. Very informative video though. I look forward to your videos. I watch them all.

      johnmiller102 - Interesting..!! They used to recommend cast data for their plated bullets. Actually, I'm glad they did what was needed to allow jacketed data - makes 'em more versatile mid cost bullets for reloaders...Continued good shootin' to ya, FC

    all the loads written there are sub or trans sonic. there's no danger in those loads because they will be fired out of a 41 magnum gun. elmer keith started out with 44 special cases. he got a 240 grain to go 1200. now if you are loading wad cutters flush with the case id use trailboss.

    I've found a revolver chambered for .357 Magnum will shoot with better accuracy when .357 magnum cases are used. That is likely to do with the long jump between the cylinder and the forcing cone. So, unless a .41 Special chambered revolver is manufactured, to me modifying .41 Magnum cases to make .41 Special and shooting them from a .41 Magnum revolver has no benefit. If one is worried about extra space in the case for reduced loads, simply fill the gap with tissue paper, or even flash paper if you want to get fancy...

      Rather than download a .51 magnum case, I prefer to either trim down to or purchase new .41 special brass.
      The reason for this is that the shorter cartridge ejects more positively from my 3" Snubbies!

    The Caliber is between two really good calibers that makes little need for a third caliber. It has a hard road to work its way into. Other than for curiosity it seems to not be a caliber that will sell.
    But then again, the 41 Colt was successful...
    "From a town known as Wheeling, West Virginia
    Rode a boy with a six-gun in his hand
    And his daring life of crime
    Made him a legend in his time
    East and west of the Rio Grande
    Well, he started with a bank in Colorado
    In the pocket of his vest, a Colt he hid
    And his age and his size
    Took the teller by surprise
    And the word spread of Billy the Kid"
    The '41 Billy The KId' name will sell better than 41 Special as a self defense cartridge & Cowboy Action round.

    The Special rounds such as 38 Special and 32 Winchester Special
    Were rounds that could be reloaded with black powder if desired.
    38 Special started out as a black powder round but was successfully loaded with smokeless.
    The 32 Winchester Special was an early smokeless round that was engineered for reloading with black powder and lead bullets by giving it a slower rifling twist than its cousin the 30-30 winchester.
    The 41 Special was developed by folks wanting to shoot the old black powder 41 Colt single action revolvers.
    Hank William's Jr. Was one of the early folks who worked with the smokeless 41 rounds in Colt SAAs.

    I'm new to reloading. What case trimmer and digital scale do you recommend?

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  7 лет назад

      KracknCorn - Depends on the amount of ammo you shoot - for rifle calibers not including the 223 / 5.56 or 308, the Lyman Universal Case Trimmer is fine. If you shoot a lot of 223 or 308, the Little Crow is good. Handgun straight wall cases do not need trimming unless you just like doing that. All digital scales are good from any of our major manufacturers - I've used a Dillon and Hornady, but others are fine. Good reloadin' to ya, FC
