- Hello friends! Today we are going to explore 'Detroit of Asia' Chennai and admire its beauty! Chennai, formerly Madras, city, capital of Tamil Nadu state, southern India, located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal. Known as the “Gateway to South India,” Chennai is a major administrative and cultural centre. Pop. (2011) city, 4,646,732; urban agglom., 8,696,010. Chennai is located on the Coromandel Coast along the Bay of Bengal. The Cooum (Koovam) River flows through its centre and the Adyar River through its southern portion. The Buckingham Canal runs parallel to the coast, joining the Kortalaiyar (Kosasthalaiyar) River in the northern edges of the city and the Muttukadu Backwaters south of the city. To the north and northwest are the industrial areas. The main residential areas are to the west and south, where a number of modern high-rise apartment buildings have been constructed, and the old villages are in the centre. The most distinctive buildings in the city are the seven large temples in the Dravidian style, situated in the city sections of George Town, Mylapore, and Triplicane. The Chepauk Palace (the former residence of the nawab [Mughal ruler] of Karnataka) and the University Senate House, both in the Deccan Islamic style, and the Victoria Technical Institute and the High Court buildings, both in the Indo-Saracenic style, are generally considered the most attractive buildings of the British period. The population of Chennai is predominantly Tamil. About four-fifths of the population is Hindu; Muslims, Christians, and Jains make up the remainder. Tamil is the most common language, and many professionals speak English. About one-tenth of the population speaks Telugu; slightly fewer speak some variety of Hindustani. Since the late 1990s, software development and electronics manufacturing have made up the bulk of Chennai’s economy. Numerous technology parks, where many foreign companies have offices, are found throughout the city. Other major industries include the manufacture of automobiles, rubber, fertilizer, leather, iron ore, and cotton textiles. Wheat, machinery, iron and steel, and raw cotton are imported. There is an oil refinery in Chennai. Services, especially finance and tourism, are also significant. Indian Bank and Indian Overseas Bank, both administered by the Ministry of Finance, are headquartered in Chennai. Hotels, luxury resorts, restaurants, marinas, and parks line Marina Beach, the coastline abutting Chennai city. Chennai is well connected by road, rail, air, and sea. It has an international airport and seaport. Within the city a network of bus services and auto-rickshaws are common modes of transport. About 37 miles (60 km) south of Chennai, the historic town of Mamallapuram, with its Shore Temple, is a popular tourist destination. Since the 1980s Chennai has emerged as one of the leading medical centres of the country. This was a result of the proliferation of private specialty hospitals, especially those which provide treatment for cardiac and eye ailments. Among the leading medical facilities in the city are the Apollo Hospital, the Madras Medical Mission’s Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, the Sri Ramachandra University Hospital, the Heart Institute of Chennai, and the Sankara Nethralaya (“Temple of the Eye”), an ophthalmic hospital. Since the 1980s Chennai has emerged as one of the leading medical centres of the country. This was a result of the proliferation of private specialty hospitals, especially those which provide treatment for cardiac and eye ailments. Only If our rivers are cleaned and all our interior roads are cleaned and roadside hawkers are removed and rehabilitated, and leave the platforms for pedestrians no city can beat chennai in south for its culture and beach tourism.

South Indian states are a pride for every indian.
South Indian states pay more in Taxes to the central government. UP and Bihar pay less Tax, but receive 3 times more in central government assistance.

@@Souvikun The point being if the Southern states got back what they were paying in taxes to the Central government, they can invest in improving the infrastructure, quality of food and education provided at the government educational institution, healthcare and more.

Stayed in Chennai for 6 years 2004-2010.. very good public amenities.. cleanliness could be better in north Chennai and areas near Chennai central.. otherwise food, culture and people are great.. weather is harsh.. somebody told me.. it is has 3 seasons hot hotter and hottest.

It can be called Detroit of South Asia. Because it produces 30-40% of India's automobiles but countries like South Korea, Japan and China produce more automobiles than India. Guangdong alone produces as much cars as India.
It's not about how much they produce.
*Chennai is called as DETROIT OF ASIA because of it's large auto mobile BASE*
It's because Chennai has the biggest capacity to produce bulk automobiles.
