Lyrics:
I had a job, I had a girl
I had something going, mister, in this world
I got laid off down at the lumber yard
Our love went bad, times got hard
Now I work down at the car wash
Where all it ever does is rain
Don't you feel like you're a rider on a downbound train
She just said, "Joe, I gotta go
We had it once, we ain't got it anymore"
She packed her bags, left me behind
She bought a ticket on the Central Line
Nights as I sleep, I hear that whistle whining
I feel her kiss in the misty rain
And I feel like I'm a rider on a downbound train
Last night I heard your voice
You were crying, crying, you were so alone
You said your love had never died
You were waiting for me at home
Put on my jacket, I ran through the woods
I ran till I thought my chest would explode
There in the clearing, beyond the highway
In the moonlight, our wedding house shone
I rushed through the yard
I burst through the front door, my head pounding hard
Up the stairs I climbed
The room was dark, our bed was empty
Then I heard that long whistle whine
And I dropped to my knees, hung my head and cried
Now I swing a sledge hammer on a railroad gang
Knocking down them cross ties, working in the rain
Now, don't it feel like you're a rider on a downbound train

This is by far my favorite from Springsteen. I’m a 61 year old man who weeps every time I hear it. It rings clear to me. God bless you Bruce!
Listen to Madrugada's version. Sivert kicks Bruce's ass.
Boy, what you wrote was really cool. congratulations
music is forever
I'm in my 30s and this song gives me the same feeling, brother.
i have the same mayby not his best song but for me my favorite song
The pain, the hope, the disappointment. This song says it all
I’m 83 and I’ve loved Bruce Springsteen since I can remember and he’s the best live performer I’ve ever seen and that includes Elvis Presley, Eddie Cochran, Bill Haley, Tom Jones, Paul Rodgers and Jerry Lee Lewis at their best. He tops them all.
Sure thing. Got that right. Saw him 3 times. Memorable.
Bruce would respect all of them. Love Bruce! saw him live in London, the guy killed me, he killed me. Nice talking Dudley
Wow!!!
Bruce Springsteen loves you,respect
To see all those legendary artists!!! That's amazing!! 👍👍
My favorite song of the boss. Probably underestimated by the fans. Masterpiece.
Ur not alone...
My Favorite too👍
favorite no, but killer nonetheless
luca luca I could not agree more. I have loved this song from the time it was released.
Looove this song.
To me this was always the outstanding track on the Born in the USA lp.
That horn section relly juices this one up!
Oh yeah!…
Touche. This and Bobby Jean.
@@ZeusHoney Cover me
The horn section makes this performance…❤
An underrated gem from Born in The USA, powerful it always spoke to me.
Most underrated Springsteen song over. Love it
I like the ghost of Tom joab(?) Too.
This song is special, and should be reserved for late in the show, for the dark, when things are desperate and exhausted and still a little hopeless. I have lived this song, and its not spoken of lightly.
Sad thing is this gem is forgotten about.
Fk yeah!
I don't know why it 's the one I prefer about the boss .. too bad I don't understand and words (I'm Italian) but "I understand" the emotions and the mood that it arouses!
This is a great song. I lived it too brother. You arn't alone.
I been on a couple of downbound trains in my life, it’s indescribable. Cheers to everyone who manages to find their way back, and a moment of respect to those who are stuck at that terminal station.
Max Weinberg. Drummer of all time.
So much of it hangs on him
and the most elegant
Your right Mary, and his son ain't to bad either
Flawlessly solid
Timing like a Swiss watch!
I believe all of Bruce Springsteen's fan have a favorite song by him. A song that talks to them on a personal level. For me this is that song, it goes back decades ago when my wife and I were having problems and I thought the end was more likely than not!! This song meant a lot to me then and even now reminds me of how fragile love can be!!
loose ends hard to be a saint in the city 🎸

This is my favourite too no real story to go with it just love the rustic feel to it.
I went 2 see ESB in Oslo this summer. Not once did they play this song on the shows before coming to Oslo. But they pulled it out of the blue. I am the romantic type who truly believes that they played it for me.❤ Love this song 😊😊😍
Revoar.♥️♥️♥️🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Can't stop listening to this song, still beautiful and my no.1 by Bruce Springsteen. Thank you from my ears, my soul for release Downbound Train.
epic
Last night I heard your voice
You were crying, crying, you were so alone
You said your love had never died
You were waiting for me at home
Put on my jacket, I ran through the woods
I ran till I thought my chest would explode
There in the clearing, beyond the highway

And I dropped to my knees, hung my head and cried
This part always kills me. Criminally underrated. A gem.
It's poetry, sad poetry, yet brilliant - 'cause it pulls at the heartstrings of every human who has lost a deep love.
Oh, the ultimate sadness of life...
Everyone, just help another human being - there are so, so many that need our help, our empathy, in these crazy and trying times.
Totally blown away, the track was always haunting. The live version is just exquisitely evocative!
and weinberg is the absolute man on the skins. locked in all day every day behind the boss for damn near 5 decades.
I just love at 3:40 when he feels Steve’s guitar sound and needs more of it. Watching Bruce perform is a lesson in being in the moment. Even some of the best artists seem like they’re going through the motions. Bruce NEVER looks bored up there.
Very under-rated and superbly haunting, sometimes it is the reality that we all feel
The last and high "Bound Train" is genuinely one of the best thing I've ever heard. Long live The Boss!
Wow! I agree!!
He could probably take a bath in the millions he has made while the rest of us struggle to find jobs and have a roof over our heads. Meanwhile 'the boss' gets treated like royalty because of his 'special skills.'
@@paulsavage5057 writing songs that move millions of people IS a special skill.
Like there sound think thats enough out of my minimum wage
@@paulsavage5057 What's the problem with getting rewarded for doing a job well, as recognized by millions (hundreds of) around the world?
Don’t you love watching Max? At the interlude, he’s quiet and still, yet honed-in; laser focused on Bruce’s every move. Adjusts his glasses, re-fashions his grip, readying for his return. Nails the big thump on his re-entry. It’s a close up of a true professional at work and I love watching it.
I watched this video thinking exactly that! At one point I caught myself thinking "quit showing Bruce I want to watch Max", and I'm a huge Bruce fan, so that says a lot :D
Yeah he´s great. Max And Bruce are the coolest old dudes i know :D
It is a beautiful thing to watch. So in tune with each other. I love the way Max NEVER takes his eyes off Bruce.
When I see them live, I find myself zoning in on the band individually. Just listen to Max's drum and Nils and Stevie's guitar, Gary's bass, Roy's keys.. and realize they're doing jazz playing different notes then what is recorded. They're so in tune as a force that it all plays together perfectly. Prince called Bruce the best band leader he's seen. No other band like the ESB
Max ups Bruce, and I agree, he his honed in on Springsteen.
Oh man. Since the first time I heard this song when it was released and now, damn it's still punches me in the heart.
I absolutely LOVE this song...especially when it's done live, like this version. It's got so much more power to it!
Best version ever so far, I love it !!!
So proud to cover it up with my band, I wish I could bring people goosebumps as he did !!!
Thanks Mr Springsteen
What a powerful song.
Such a classic tune. Hell I'm 71,makes me feel like I'm 40. How bout them apples !
age does not matter bro
😂
Rock on ma friend
❤😊 hell yeah 😊
Anyone else who gets the chills at 02:52 ?? ❤
Watching the core group closely is such a treat. They have such perfect intuition after having performed together for so long. In particular just look at the concentration and power in Max’s face. He’s a total professional. Watch the way he, Nils and Steve are constantly looking at Bruce... there are imperceptible visual cues going on there that only come from skilled people living and working together for over 40 years. Very good stuff.
And Max Weinberg is amazing on drums, like always. But that ending on drums is perfection.
Yeah, pleasure to watch him playing.
Max is the best!!!!
Got to see him play with his Jukebox band a couple of months ago. Imo the best drummer ever :-)
I miss the Conan days :'( He was the best sidekick ever
Totally, Max is the man.
This songs makes you feel happy and sad at the same time, the music and lyrics speak for themselves
Just such an amazing song and performer. I saw him in 1985 at Wembley Stadium for 3 plus hours. Thank you, Bruce and your band, you have brought so much happiness to so many of us.
"Now I work down at the carwash, where all it ever does is rain".......Love it.
My favorite line from this song. Couldn't be more depressive. Just great
One of my favorites always. After all these years never get tired of listening to it.
Max Weinberg am Schlagzeug und Garry Tallent am Bass funktionieren präzise wie eine Schweizer Uhr!
Difference between a good song and an epic song like this
Goosebumps from head to toes every time
Never heard the brass at the end until I listened to it in ear buds cutting the grass….next level
Bruce we love you!! Thank you so much for uploading!
I hope you and your family are in good health.
See you down the road! 2020? ;)
那是別人幫忙上傳的。
"Now I work in the car wash where all it ever does is rain," has to be the most depressing words I have ever heard in a song.
Good business for laundering drug money though.
what does it mean?
maybe I'm missing something as non native english speaker
@@JasieK0 ... It means that he has a low-paying, low status job working in a car wash -- a place where water pours down on cars. "Rain" can be a metaphor for sadness or depression. And the lyrics already explained he lost his girlfriend. "The "down-bound train" is a metaphor for everything getting worse in life with seemingly no hope of things getting better.
Everytime I feel low I come back to Bruce and especially on RUclips. A couple of minutes is all it takes for me until I crawl back up and feel life energy burning inside. Thanks for all the years Bruce
Steve Van Zandt - incredible guitar sound!
My favourite song by Bruce ❤
This touch
😍
This is a brilliant song brilliant like Neil young tom petty
Best song by the Boss for sure, pure gold this one is.Been listening to it since I was 14, 36 years and it's still haunting.
It's hit inside
Thing is he's written so many good songs it's difficult to decide, he's that special.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇬🇧🇬🇧🐾🐾🐨🐨
haunting indeed
2:54 THE VOCALSSSSSS!!!
I could listen to that outro all day.
Raw, dark poetry
this song cuts deep.
The way we love it
The boss
so true....
Profound lyrics- its not just the song but the feeling and memory we chase ❤
The best part of the song is when Steve jumped in with a solo at the end. Bruce tells the sound guy to turn him up!
Steve's best solo?
I dropped to my knees
One of the first English-lyrics song i've whole learned by heart (in 1985...)
Greetings from 🇮🇹
PS I've just know that the boss is from italian descent 🤙
His voice hasn't changed. Also my favourite song in the album
The only train I can seem to find.
My favorite Bruce Springsteen song......

BRUCE you are my Childhood!!! I grew up with your music!!!
A masterpiece in the album, a masterpiece in the live version
This song kept me from ever getting married & thus ever getting divorced. Thanks Bruce
What a show, what a song, what a band. Pure culture and soul in these minutes ❤❤❤
So touching... I'm crying... great song, great voice, great musicians... The Boss, you are the legend... luv u
Class of his own with a killer band🇺🇸
Love u so much Bruce Springsteen
This song helps me process my feelings I have for a friend of mine. I have a wonderful friend named Brandi Nuse-Villegas. And for the past 10 months, I have been in love with her. She doesn't feel the same way for me and last night told me to work on letting go of my feelings of her. A part of me doesn't want to do that because I keep holding on to hope that 20,25, or 30 years from now there might be chance that she may feel the same way for me. However I do love her and respect what she feels. The part of this song where the narrator rushes home because he thinks that she is there only to find that she is gone is a part that I can relate to a whole lot because just when I think that there is chance she will feel the same way, I learn there is no chance. And I could die and it will never happen. Thanks Bruce and the E Street Band for comforting my soul.
Thank you for this sharing bro X love to you
Bruce the legend !
What is it about the whole band, that you feel like you could just have a beer with them all and it would feel completely natural with no drama...?
Best song of the “Born in the USA” album. I love the story in this song. And the quality of the ESB is amazing. Impressive, as always.
What a great song and great performance BOSS!! ❤️👏🏼
Fuckin magical
Max one of the best drummers ever
True. You just need a basic drum kit to be great.
Max is great drummer and a nice guy.
Best Springsteen song, pure poetry, there's that lingering juxtaposition of emotions related to rain...
This song makes me cry every time
Grazie Boss!!!
Once again he sings about most of our lives in one way or another, certainly mine, that's why I love his music and him so much,so real, can tell he has been there, his book is a great read for anyone who hasn't read it yet ,love you all ,help someone who needs it today peace🌅😁☮️🐕😎🤗🤩💕😍🕺🐣🐾
Bruce Springsteen and E Street performed Downbound Train with such a steady and dramatic flow and the quality of the recording is superb. This song gets the imagination working which happens when reading a good book. One can picture the time, place and characters.
Underrated song! So damn beautiful!
My favorite song of the Boss. Saw them on the tour behind this song. What a masterpiece.
This song really pulled me out of the shit.
I had been with this lass 6 years, and things had been good.
I came home one night, out of the blue she said she didn't love me anymore and left.
I never really saw her again after that, and I never got a reason as to what happened.
I sold the house and everything, had no choice but to move on.
It literally felt like I had been hollowed out, and chucked in the fire wood pile to be incinerated.
The pain was indescribable really.
Was just one of those things as a man, where you got too suck it up and take it on the chin.
Everytime I hear this song I reflect.
But I also think I got through that.
It almost damn near killed me,
But i got through that shit,
And I'm happier now.
Anyone going through that,
I feel you,
Hang in there.
A song about the sad battles in life. Fantastic song. No life goes straight all the time. Keep up the fight folks and in time it gets better👍
This song tears at me and gives me goose-bumps, thank you, Bruce!
I now work at the car wash where all it ever does is rain..F-ing amazing..a blues tune with no blues..
Spot on 👍
I had never heard this version... magnificent❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Bellissima stupenda ti amo Bruce, ascoltare la tua musica mi riempi il cuore e mi entra nell'anima ❤
Such a haunting song! Love it!
It’s addicting listening to it. Is this your favorite song?
@@scottrichard2735 ciao Scott! Come stai? 🙋♀️😍😘❤️💋
Haunting, that's the word
The BEST song by Bruce...PERIOD!
I am his age. Ever since I started hearing western songs, i have been hearing the Boss. Simply amazing.
I'm 76 and took up guitar to sing and play like him, he is inspirational...
Steve Van Zandt - incredible guitar sound!
Incredible is not strong enough in praise. Any idea where i could get the TABS for his solo please? I would just love to give it a go.
Any idea would be very much appreciated. I dont believe he would reply if i sent him a letter!!
There are so many good things about this performance & song, but one of the main reasons I keep coming back to this clip is for his solo. It’s just so incredible!
And improvised, I presume.
Brilliant song, am i the only one who doesnt get why that free style end guitar solo by Steve was added to this perfect song?
As excellent and fitting, now as it was in the 80's, thank you!
Amazing song, this live version's much better than the studio version in my opinion. Just Great 😍👌
agree... ✌🏻
I agree, where were the horns all these years???
Best song off the Born In The USA album that is very underrated tune.
Silvio's guitar solo is just the best. I love Bruce and band, but this one, Hungry Hearts, Prove It All Night, It's Hard to Be A Saint, live Because The Night are just small examples of how Bruce changed my life. Oh, and the live at Hammersmith's Spirit In The Night. Just an amazing catalog.
My favourite off the Born in the USA album. Became a poignant song for me when back in '85 me and my then girlfriend split. Went to see Bruce in Sheffield in '88 for the first time and was so surprised when he played this. I was up in the stands at Brammell Lane but everyone was sitting down. Got a bit embarrassed when he announced it & i was the only one who kept out of my seat.
God Blessed Bruce
One of my favourites off this album 👍
When Max's hit those drums that's when your body starts dancing 💃 again🎉🎉🎉🎉 happy 😊 new year too good music 🎶.🎉🎉🎉 and wonderful peoples who. Service others well and fare❤❤❤.😅
Still haunts me after all of these years
The greatest song in the history of the world!!!
Minha favorita canção de Bruce Springsteen!!...
Gostaria muito de conhecê-lo pessoalmente, e que desse um show na Terra das Cataratas - Iguassu Falls
Impecável ❤
I think Bruce and Bono are absolute idiots….but I love their music. Downbound Train is one of my top 5 favorite songs of all time.
The Boss.
Love the sound of Bruce's voice singing this song. Love Always ❤️
My Favorite Boss song, Still brings me to tears all these years later
one of my favorite songs...
He's got so many good songs. Down bound train is one of the best ones. 4:36 😊
Thank you waiting for the next new one
