  • George discusses Brian DePalma's big budget follow up to Carrie (1976). An uneven film but one that boats some of the greatest set pieces and cinematic ideas in DePalma's oeuvre.

    Reliving the best of De Palma via your appreciations - I am reminded how small movies have become. De Palma may have lost popular favor just as movies lost their expansive cinematic language and morphed into high-res digital miniatures. You’re onto something with De Palma’s under-appreciated ideology (convictions) - something that comes full force to the audience’s revulsion with Casualties of War.

    Thank you for this review to get the word out on one of De Palma's less appreciated efforts. I've been enjoying The Fury since reading Pauline Kael's wildly enthusiastic review for it. The plot is overly complicated, so most of Kirk Douglas' scenes are not nearly as engrossing for me as those with Amy Irving. She does an impressive job in the role. If the film doesn't quite come together as a whole, it at leaat has several jaw-dropping sequences you have identified that make it memorable. It deserves to be more widely known.

    • @FilmJournal
      @FilmJournal  8 месяцев назад +2

      Exactly. Irving is great. Kirk coasts on his charisma but his whole adventure sub plot is largely superfluous. I wish maybe he’d have done some investigating about the company etc. rather than just run around evading bad guys the whole time.

    Another important factor to note: the long shadow of famed composer Bernard Herrmann. John Williams, a friend of Herrmann's up until his death, was explicitly asked to incorporate elements of his style in the score for "The Fury," and passes the test with flying colors, particularly in his use of harsh brass. Perhaps one of the unfortunate causes of the "De Palma as Diet Hitchcock" narrative is the fact that he was never over the loss of the former Hitchcock collaborator, having worked with him on "Sisters" and "Obsession." The latter film in particular was one of Herrmann's favorite and most personal assignments, and the penultimate before his death. Between Pino Donaggio's subsequent scores for De Palma ("Carrie" having originally been a future Herrmann collab), Williams here, and notorious Herrmann fan Danny Elfman on "Mission: Impossible," one cannot escape the undeniable fact that, had he lived past 1975, Herrmann would've been the man at the podium for every one of De Palma's classic films.

    I can still remember when this movie came out and the huge front-of-house billboard poster above the marquee with a glowing light behind the two silhouetted heads. I don't know why I didn't go see it? Maybe it was the lukewarm reviews at the time that put me off? I caught the movie on VHS a few years later and quite enjoyed it. Then I saw it again totally remastered on DVD and thought it was even better than before. For me, John Cassavetes' sinister performance elevates this movie.
    Anyhow, great retrospective.

    INCREDIBLE Retrospective on The Fury here! Well thought out, and absolutely LOVE your myriad of deeper dives into the subtext, both psychological, societal & Governmental. I'll never stop wondering how utterly mind-fucked DePalma must have ultimately felt on 911, (given his birthday is on that very day,...) Sure wish someone would ask him about this. Am VERY curious to his takes on this...

    Interesting analysis of a pretty underrated film. Although muddled and markedly different from the novel by Farris (another ignored but remarkable author) this film received a lot of press at the time, but for its actors, not the movie itself.
    I find it mildly interesting, the subplot of Robin and Gillian being psychic "twins", almost conjoined at some level, always destined (or doomed) to be part of each others' lives, was also done quite a bit less successfully, in "Hancock", a much more confusing film regarding this subject.

    The very definition of "underrated". I hated this film, but after multiple viewings, I have concluded that the film contains enough elements that ultimately make this brilliant and re-watchable. If you're going to make a failure, at the very least, make an engaging and interesting failure. Which begs the question: Was it? I don't think so. Plus, we get to see Andrew Stevens with his shirt off.

    Even though this movie is a bit of a mess, it's still on my favourites list. Brian's spinning, screen splitting, slow motion keeps me coming back. It's ruined by Kirk's long talky comedic bits (looking at you family / police car hostage scenes) that completely jar with the rest of the film and it's tipping more to the trashy side, but there is enough in there to make a bit of a forgotten gem. I think casting Amy really helped, asides from being good in the role, I was a huge fan of Carrie so that movie took me to this one and she bridged the two nicely along with Brian. I actually went down the street Amy runs down and the shopping mall Esther and Peter meet up in Chicago, about 5 years back, they still look exactly the same !

    • @FilmJournal

      I have to imagine that the excessive Kirk comedy moments weren't cut back at the behest of Douglas. They are a slog! Great movie though- thanks for watching. If you're interested in more Kirk content check out my review of Saturn 3!

    ...Only results in both of them dying. I have always found that scene with Peter dropping Robin to his death and then taking his own life very disturbing and tragic. I previously commented here but I suspected I was being too harsh and removed it. I have since rewatched the film and agree it has some incredible sequences and my appreciation for the film has grown and I can see myself revisiting it again in the future. I still think it has flaws, including the casting of Douglas who appears like an older man trying too hard to seem younger (I prefer how a contemporary like Mitchum leaned into his age at this period). I also can never unsee some of the story problems such as *spoilers* Robin falls out of a window early in the film only to survive but later gains the ability to levitate at will and somehow dies falling out a window? Baffling. To your Rian Johnson reference, that is some lax writing on the level of Last Jedi, which includes bombers in a zero graity environment. Baffling.
