    I worked on cargo ships a few years when I was young and if during a heavy storm we could hear music like this, I would jump in the waves and drown myself so I wouldn't have to listen to this! So, I turned the volume down to zero but that deprived me from listening to natural sounds, The most amazing thing is the noises ships make in storms! Eerie, ghostly, scary, like they are alive! Go see for yourselves if you got the walnut sacs to work on a ship in North Sea in the winter or a fishing ship in Alaska! And not only there. We ate cyclones and typhoons for breakfast, lunch and dinner!

    In 1959 I was sailing on the aircraft carrier USS Shangri La around the horn of South America in the month of April. The seas were rough the wind was howling around 50 miles an hour the seas had waves of 50 feet or more. I would not have changed a thing this was a great adventure most people will never experience. Our ship and personal were all good.

    Eleven year a merchant seaman, and I got to live through one storm that was termed a "storm of the century". Then as in #7, the seas were "mountainous". I was in a 200 foot supply boat. The ship in #7 is much bigger, and it is getting tossed about. Phenomenal.. They will remember that storm all their life.

    • @paulzane5412

      You must've been an AB. I was an Ordinary for two years. One ship I was on was the 'China Bear'. We were off the Aleutians, heading to Yokohama when we encountered a "Perfect Storm", the same as the movie. It was tree separate storms pushing waves ahead into one. I used to say the waves were 40 to 50 feet high. Later, in calculating it, I realized that they were twice that. When I was on the bridge (5 decks up) steering, I was still looking up another 20 or 30 feet at the crests. We had a brief break from the clouds and the waves were the most incredibly beautiful blue. And, when they broke, it was like massive avalanches of the purest white. It was all incredibly magnificent.
      By the way, there was a movie recently, Finest Hours", about a tanker that broke apart. It was an old T-2 tanker. I shipped on its sister ship, the Angelo Petri, carrying wine from Cal to NJ. I later found out that the same thing had happened to her, but she later got a new bow in order to transport the wine. So, the movie was like old home movies for me.
      I loved the sea, but you've heard . . "There are two things a sailor cannot keep . . A wife and a car."

    01:27 yeah, my first two ships were Destroyers, going into the waves, or rather, into the wind yields abrupt and also, depending upon the space between troughs & crests, very noisy impacts. By far the most surreal and potentially dangerous transits are if one needs to parallel or quarter the troughs. Fun memories now. Not really when you're 19, standing watch at night, total blackness, mid-winter, Baltic, or North Sea! Gotta have faith both from God, and amongst the crew for our ships abilities. Word.

  • @LERobbo
    @LERobbo 4 года назад +2

    Had to sail with a car carrier once, Bremerhaven to Zeebrugge, wind force 7-8 on the North Sea. To pass time the electrician and myself decided to play a few bouts of squash on the ship's court. Only reference to the horizon was a small window.
    Let me tell you that playing squash on a large and high vessel, rolling on the North Sea, is a challenge in a league of its own! Remember face planting not knowing why, but it was fun like hell!

      I’ve seen all these videos before and every single one is from the North Sea (mainly) and the Norwegian Sea except for number 5 which I don’t know. You don’t get many ships setting foot in drake passage as there isn’t really anything there and all ships courses tend to go through the Panama Canal which shortens their journey when crossing from the Pacific into the Atlantic vice versa, the only ships you tend to see in drake passage are British warships which do trips to the British territories in the south Atlantic.

    Man I miss this we spent most of our time out at sea with weather like this and a lot worse. I was on a Defense/Ocean Research Vessel on the West coast of Vancouver Island during the Cold War and we used to test a lot of gear under the worst possible conditions in other words when other shops were running for cover we were heading out into the worst part of the storms yeeehaaaawww it's like riding a wild horse we had seatbelts on our bunks (bed/rack) because if you didn't wear it when you went to sleep you would wake up on the deck with the wind knocked out of you it would go over the top of a big wave and when it started to come down it threw you out of your bunk then the ship would take a roll so when your in the air and your bed that was underneath you is now five feet away so when you come down there's no bed and your heading down to the deck and let me tell you it hurts when you hit that deck when you wake up lol.But I gotta say it was a blast

      I thought the same thing but once you have your sea legs it's not bad You know that I used to say to myself....You can't pay me enough to get this sick but when you got your sea legs it was fun after that. What was funny was watching someone new especially when you are rolling so hard that you are actually walking on the bulkheads... (walls)... But I guess it's not for everyone but you know that even today I still get sea sick for the first couple of days and it's true when they say that a person can actually go green when they are sea sick

      This is all mostly in the 80s but at the time we held the record for the words deepest dredge of 1 mile. What we were doing was we had a heavy duty steel bucket about the size of a 45 gallon drum a 55 gallon for you Americans on the end of a mile long cable going in circles around an underwater volcanoes looking for minerals and sulphides instead we found gold and from that day forward the Canadians and Americans are fighting over who's side of the border this Volcano is on lol. Also we the first ship to use a ROV and the we found what is called the Endeavor Vents and you should have a look at that on Computer but we didn't know it at the time but we discovered new life forms what were called Extremephiles I believe. And my biggest laugh was when we freaked out a bunch of Russians soldiers and sailors on the hull of a Russian Nuke Sub but I guess you had to be there but picture this we were a Canadian Research Vessel /Defense Research Vessel and we had a crew of about 46 guys and we were all civilians but almost half of us were Bikers you know he long hair tattoos work hard play hard Harley riders we were off watch on deck drinking beer smoking and not just cigarettes lol and we were fishing the tunes were cranked AC/DC playing and through the pea soup fog comes this ominous Black Submarine with about 20 Russians with automatic weapons pointed at us not even 20ft away they didn't know what to make of us they were looking at us like WTF we tried to offer them some brews but no such luck lol you could see a couple of really young looking guys with a smil on their faces the rest were pretty serious looking but ya gotta remember this is the cold war. Yes I guess I do have a lot of stories and I can't believe that I typed this all out sorry for the long story
