Patient Feedback - Ankylosing Spondylitis with spinal fracture

Patient Anil Kumar from Aligarh presented to us with severe back pain and difficulty in walking and standing. He was a known case of Ankylosing spondylitis, and he had been suffering with this problem for many years. He had a recent history of fall after which pain started slowly and was progressive. He had consulted many doctors, but his pain was still persist. He came to Jaypee hospital and consulted Dr Pramod Saini, Associate Director, Institute of Spine. His MRI and CT scan showed spinal column fracture with non-union. This is known as Anderson lesion. He was counselled regarding his problem and was advised surgery. Initially he was reluctant, but finally he agreed and was operated upon by Dr Pramod Saini at Jaypee Hospital. He was mobilised within two days and discharged after four days. Now after six months, He is pain free walking comfortably without support.
Spine surgery is safe and with good results. Any patient with Ankylosing spondylitis with history of fall and back pain or neck pain should always go for MRI to look for any displaced or in displaced spinal fractures. These kind of fractures in Ankylosing spondylitis patients has a very high tendency of non-union, which is known as Anderson lesion. Only treatment, for non-union or fracture in Ankylosing spondylitis patient is Surgery - Fracture Fixation with Pedicle Screws.
