The fact that you all as a team took the time to coach/film/edit/ and post this and didn't charge for this is mind blowing. Like the other guy said I would (and will for you guys) pay for this sort of video instruction. Shows how much you all as a team care about the tennis community that doesn't have the means for one on one coaching You guys are a godsend to the youtube-learning tennis community.
Thank you so much for that, Cristian. Means a great deal to all of us here. -Ian
This is THE BEST video I've watched from this channel or any other on RUclips. Amazingly informative stuff. I can't find anything else like it. You should do more of these!
Thanks Ian for all your instruction videos. My daughter, 14 won a tournament a month ago, her first ever! She practiced and worked hard on the court and incorporated what she watched and learned from your videos. This video was instrumental, as well as others. She changed her swing from a compact to the loop. She has the curve, the depth and finally has the consistency she so needed. All thanks to you. No longer does she hit in net as often as she use to. She enjoys tennis more and her confidence has grown tremendously. We both continue to watch and learn more and work hard. Thanks a million!
Excellent posting. I keep telling other tennis players about Essential Tennis on RUclips. No nonsense, step by step instruction at a level of detail you just can't get in a clinic. Many thanks.
Thank you so much for spreading the word and being part of our ET Family, Brad. -Ian
Dude, I would pay for this video! What a great lesson.
That could possibly be my favorite video comment of all time....thanks so much, Jay. -Ian
I'd also pay for some Essential Tennis merch!
I'm working on it. -Kirby
none is saying you to not do, ask for their paypal account...
I have been practicing tennis for last 90 days on a clay court. Your video is going to make a heaven lot of improvement in my play. Thank you so much for your service by making this video available for free. So much love from India. I am going to watch all your videos in this channel and going to forward this to my friends who started playing tennis recent days.
I feel like telling more but am out of words. Do Keep inspiring. God bless you.
Wow, guys. This video changed my view of Tennis. I did a lot of the things you teach in this video, but with pure instinct, so i got unsure of my own technique. But now i feel confident and like i can keep progressing on the forehand. You are an excellent teacher! Great video. Waiting for a video like this for the two handed backhand .
Sounds like you had great instincts, Jader! Keep up the great work on your game. More videos on the way. -Ian
Thanks Ian and the student as well. I could see myself in him and followed the instructions at home. My forehand improved soooo much 😘. Really, thank you for your time and expertise.
Hi i joined and you are an excellent teacher . I have loved tennis 40 years and played onand off 25 and now am assisting kids and my partner to learn and love the sport in Philippines
I like that Corey speaks back a lot. A lot of what he says are the questions I have but don't see covered in some videos. Great job!!
Great lesson Ian. Recently I changed from eastern to semi-western grip and had great results instantly. Made it so much easier to do what you explained in this video. Especially on higher balls. I started going to a slice instead, even though sometimes I wished I could come over and through with some confidence. Now, with just a slight grip adjustment, turning racquet down so my palm rests flatter against the handle between bevel 2 & 3, made all the difference in the world. How did I learn this? By playing pickleball believe it or not! My tennis game has benefited tremendously since learning some PB...
Ian, I have been watching your videos for several years now and I just want to say that your coaching has got better and better and your training videos clearer and even more inspiring. This video was fantastically helpful. Thank you!
So happy to hear that, James. Thank you for taking the time to leave me that feedback! -Ian
im a beginner and i was having problems with follow threw and i kept trying to twist the racket and this video really helped me improve my form for the forhand and hit more consistently
You are a great coach! I liked how your instructions were very clear. Most of the time coaches just tell you what to do verbally and do not take time to demonstrate/rehears single projection before hitting. Great job👏👏👏and thank you!!
Could you post the same demo for back hand if you haven't already done that.
A very helpful video. You have others showing drill progressions to lean the forehand top spin, but seeing them used in context with comments from the student - priceless!
Good to hear, Carey. Thanks for the feedback. -Ian
Very, very instructive! It´s like watching myself thru Corey. The message is more evident, more real when watching the theory being apllied to a "normal" player and how he strugles to improve and finaly gets it. I´m Cesar from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Glad you enjoyed it, Cesar! -Ian
yeah, hum hum, yeah, hum hum, yeah
Oh my gosh he actually just said mhmmm all the time
once you start noticing it, you cant unotice it
Uh huh mhm mhm mhm fuckkkkk stoppppp
Make it stop!
I started using a heavier racket 305gm++ earlier I was using 265m++ .... I find lot of shot falling out of the base line .... after watching this video ....I got an idea than closing the face of racket will help me compensate the increase in momentum because of the weight of racket .... really a nice progressive video explaining ins and outs and what to do in particular situation
Excellent instruction! This is really clear and makes total sense. One question: when you instruct to close the face of the racquet before striking, how is this achieved? Is it by adjusting the grip so the strings angle down or keeping the grip the same, but slightly re-angling the wrist?
This instructional video was outstanding! Amazing how key instructions developed the student's weak form and made him a more consistent and confident player. I almost didn't watch the video because the snapshot of the video is of the student and not the professional, but glad I did click on the video. Great work.
Extremely insightful. Even though I've watched most of your videos regarding the forehand fundamentals, seeing you explain and show it to someone with similar issues as myself gave me some new understanding of what I may be doing wrong, as well as a few core takeaways - the interlocking value of vertical lift on contact with the relative closed face of the strings, and the arm extension that should accompany it. I'm looking forward to seeing if I can apply this the next chance I get.
I bet you'll be able to implement it now that the understanding (and visual) is there, Da. Come back and let me know how it goes for you. -Ian
Ian, I can't thank you enough for posting the video. It's great to see Cori' improvement in forehand swing step by step. I will try my best to follow your instructions. Please do the same for single handed and double handed back hands, volleys etc..
You are a great coach!!!!!
loved the video but how funny is the, "mhmm"!
mhmm
Brillant and extremely helpful. Although watching so much videos, I was really fascinated during these 35 minutes. All the people are right here, it's absolutely worth to pay for. Thank's a lot, Ian.
I would really appreciate a similar video for the one-handed backhand.
Appreciate the kind words very much, Jo. More on the way. -Ian
Excelent instructor you are. Congrats. I wish I lived in the US to have classes with you.
This video is TOTALLY on my favorites list!! I am taking notes & watching & rewatching!!! Such great information!!! Thank you so so much!!
You're so welcome, Becky. Which part was most helpful to you?
Generosity of content on this channel is amazing. I’m in Australia and love watching these lessons. Thanks guys for doing a fantastic job!
Thanks so much for saying that, Ryan. Really kind of you! Glad you appreciate what we do. -Ian
Awesome video. I've watched others tennis training videos but with your video, the way you explained everything, I totally understood and absorbed everything you said. Thanks
No lie this stuff is Gold. Love the videos...Way past my bedtime but cant stop watching lol. Question...In the 18 minute range you talk about finishing with the entire racket above your head...Is that the finishing point on all ground strokes or just topspin strokes? Thanks in advance!
Last Wednesday was an awesome session. Every hit was perfectly executed.
Myself and another person we hit over 3 sets of 600 balls only 50 balls went into the net. We both are in disbelief on last Friday night.
My bh fh volleys and follow threws overheads dropshots went very well soft handed feeling.
I had this feeling of a lightness of my racquet.
Do you get this sort of feeling when playing?
This is a fantastic video. Love how you breakdown the elements of the shot and differentiate between why the need for the bottom to up acceleration, rotate at top of the "mountain" and finish with butt cap facing toward the other player and above the head. You are amazing!
Appreciate the kind words, Moonstone! What level player are you?
I started playing after a long break. Probably a 3.5. Trying to work my way up to 4 at the moment!
Wow you guys did above and beyond any expectation of youtube tennis content! Thanks alot
Much more on the way, James! -Ian
I think there is great need of this kind of material. The kind of video lesson where one or two "pro" or similar show the fundamentals and "how it s done" has it usefulness, but it s more of a thing of the past now that there is so much material available on "technique illustration". Showing the struggle to improve, the mistakes being corrected (or persisting :P ) and the effort to assimilate and put into practice all this theory is something that really not being explored much so far, and that the 'average tennis joe' like me , which is suppose make the bulk of your public, can easily identify with.
I think it might even get more engaging if it covered a series of lesson with the same student, or the same few students , to add some variety along an extended period of time. One possibility could be concentrating on showing students of different skill level, from beginner to really proficient. One funny idea , maybe a little too on the light side (but after all isn t tennis about having fun , especially for us amateurs..?) would be to see you, Ira and Kirby choose each one student starting roughly on the same level, and show their training session over a period of say six month, making them compete every month and showing the highlights of their matches, and have of course a final winner couple "coach-student" by the end of the allotted time.. :)
ps> u re going to pay me royalties if you put this into practice :P
I agree 100%, Tech. Your sentiment has been communicated by a few others as well. This is definitely a completely different kind of instructional content and we plan on publishing a lot more of it. It's "real life". Not scripted, planned, and carefully cut up to make everything look perfect. As you said, I think its very important to be honest about the fact that things don't just come automatically, that the learning process has its bumps.
Very interesting ideas about how to incorporate this style of content into different types of approaches. Appreciate your input! Check is in the mail ;-) -Ian
I want to echo Tech Publica's comment. Seeing what *not* to do can be just as informative as seeing what to do.
without doubt... the best demo of forehand topspin I have ever seen.
Appreciate that, Barry. -Ian
this is your best instructional video. i recommend this to all.
I thought this video was amazing. Probably the best video I've ever seen regarding rebuilding your student's forehand. I especially like the fact how you point out how our brain plays tricks on us. It's a reason why I video myself(another tip by you) to see what really is going on with my strokes.
Glad you enjoyed it, John! -Ian
Guys you simply great... Corey's improvement can be seen from miles away.
Thanks, means a lot coming from Spiderman.
Great video. I’ll focus on putting the very clear instructions and excellent video shots into practice
I watched this video and other forehand videos. Really helpful and has helped me begin to improve my forehand. Thank you
I've been watching your videos for quite a while & find them very good, but this is the best one I've seen from you; from what I can remember. It's also the best I can remember from any video on the forehand. It was really informative & I think I've discovered the main reason for my poor forehand ground strokes. Up to this point the majority of my forehand errors have been in the net (hitting too flat) & the others go too long when I try to hit hard. I will definitely try your tips when next on the court. It's a pity I can't afford to fly to WI to benefit from such analysis from you, but I'll check out your Forehand Mastery course after this as I can imagine the great content in that. I'll also be on the lookout for same content on the backhand. Thanks again for this great video & keep up the good work. You're a big help.
Thanks so much for your feedback, Herbie. -Ian
Thanks Ian. Really enjoyed the video. You should do more of this type of videos. My only comment for improving it is to shorten it a bit. I think 10-15 minutes max. Keep up the great work guys!
More coming! We'll make them whatever length is best to really tell the full "story" of each stroke. -Ian
I loved this. This looks exactly what I am doing wrong (wrist roll over). I loved seeing the progressions.
This is the best instructional video Ive ever watched. Thanks so much for making it.
Thanks so much, Ronnie. That means a lot to us!
I feel this video shows how even someone who seems to know what they should be doing mentally, doesn't always have the technique down physically (something that I tend to struggle with). I really like how you went about changing that :) and I'm hoping that I can try to apply some of this once the weather gets better XD
Great video, love the format. "Real life", though he has got great light and quick footwork to make that preparation part easy.
So I'm noting 5 things he is doing. I think you mention three, a commenter mentions the other, and one unmentioned is magically fixed, kind of. 1. Turning wrist over. 2. Finishing too low. 3. Not bringing his body and leg around. 4. Commenter says he often has a white rapper finish of cross arms, or touching his bicep. 5. He actively contracts his elbow as part of turning the racquet over, shortening his swing.
Through the progressions you explicitly address 1, 2, 3. And when he's lengthening and extending and "letting the racquet turn over" instead of forcing it, he sometimes solves 4 and 5, too. You his best shots with a straighter elbow and his left hand behind his ear catching the racquet.
In the last good live ball swings, everything is improved but he's got weight on or moving to back foot. Number 6 On improving his forehand. Get him to "keep on moving forward" with his tennis. Great job!
Great vid ... I find myself every week I'm always learning something new. different feel , different footwork movement to get into the ready position to hit the ball. Tennis is amazing game.
this is awesome! love watching a 'real person' making progress - and the process itself.
Much more coming, Karen. Thanks for watching! -Ian
Really enjoyed the step by step progression lesson. I picked up some valuable tips.
Great work Ian I have watched many videos on RUclips and this is the best by far.
great video!! I think I've got the same problems....I've just downloaded the 5days forehand pdf, can't wait to practice following the instructions step by step...I would go on the court right now if it wasn't raining!
Thank you so much, greetings from Sardinia-Italy!
Great big thumbs up! This is exactly the lesson I have been needing. Saving this vid in my Favorites for watching again - and again...
Glad you enjoyed it, 51Dss. -Ian
Great job, Ian and amazing to see Cory's transformation. Just wondering if there is any particular reason why with someone who was so overtly 'arming' the ball you choose not to focus on the unit turn and his very closed stance as you normally teach, focusing him more on his shoulder. By the end he's much more open and hitting out in front but wondered if he might have got there sooner with your normal approach. Thanks.
Can you please explain what do you mean by „closing the string“ concept? Do you mean the grip or the the position of the racket after drop? Also do you recommend closing the racket to recreational players?
Thank you so much for this video! This "mountain" concept has really improved consistency in all of my forehand shots.
Amazing vídeo !!!
You're a great online coach
And, watching this video i think you, online coaches, should upload much more of this kind.
Teaching club players like this one, helps others like me a lot because i can see much clearer your lesons like if i was there, with the same problems to improve and understand the "why" of tennis keys
Thank you !!!
I agree 100%, Jose. There should be more coaches (online and offline) showing their process and how they work with students. Much more to come, thanks for watching. -Ian
Great video so much better watching someone like me trying to do it and having you correct the same mistakes I would have make. Like I was there learning with your student -excellent work how do we support you?
excellent video and great insights but what do you mean by “closed strings”??
Great lesson on how to transition from a linear swing to a vertical swing for top spin!
Glad you liked it!
That was a great video! How can someone make arrangements to have the 2 day program you just showed? I'm very interested since I don't live that far from Milwaukee. I would appreciate any information you can forward to me on how to do so. Thanks again for the fine information on the forehand.
Hi! I think your videos are amazing! I tried to learn from this lesson. However, I am struggling with "playing with the strings" or "keeping my strings closed" when I control how far my shots go. I mini-rally with my friends and I struggle to keep it within the box. Can you explain the methodology behind this? Thanks again!
Swing from arm is absolutely true not twisting arm or elbow but as natural flow, the racket will come to face down. That creates good spin. Unless hitting slow balls, I do not think need to swing that much upwards
One of the best videos on forehand our there!
Very good video! I learn a new way to control my own forehand.
Impressive job!
First of all I think you guys are terrific instructors. Correct me if im wrong. I understand that you shouldn't be rolling your wrist over the ball to generate topspin. But if you watch federer he makes contact then continues to extend out his swing as his palm faces down and wraps around his shoulder.
You got it, Tom! Here's an old video of ours that explains: ruclips.net/video/YooWW_CfYAM/видео.html
Thanks that clip explains it perfect. My 12 yr old daughter started doing like you say in the clip. She lets the racket face extend out and close but like you say in the clip it is an effect, you are not rolling it. When she does this she hits real heavy topsin. She just won her first USTA tornament 12s.
What a fantastic video lesson, great job guys!
This has been my, go to review video when i need a refresher!
Great video
Awesome, so happy to hear that, Frank! -Ian
Please do more of this with other strokes - really good.
Expect way more of this, thanks for watching!
Awesome lesson and video, thank you Ian for sharing this , you guys are great.
Best forehand video on web!
Very kind of you, Frank.
thank you so much! wonderful to see the instruction, the technique, and the replays!
Glad you enjoyed it, Rebecca. -Ian
Can the string tension play a role in being unable to keep a ball in play with the same swing path? How can you adjust?
Thank you for your videos
Awesome video!! Really cool step by step breakdown! I really appreciate all of the awesome content!!
Thanks Joey, hope it helps. More on the way!
Great stuff, exactly what I need. Would love to see one for the single handed backhand.
Amazing video! Thank you for making this and sharing it with us. I look forward to spending some time with you guys in the future.
We'd love that Rahul. -Ian
Great video! Cory transformation was great! But his motion still seemed jerky or unrelaxed (imo) what advice would you give to make for a more fluid motion?
I'd probably lead him through something similar to this: ruclips.net/video/0xdkSFeOHCQ/видео.html
Superb coaching
what a great video! what grip was he using to hold the racket?
Thank you very much.I enjoyed a lot.
Good details in technique. Enjoy it. Keep it up. Thank you.
Question: I dont understand why in my class at school tennis is not cool in germany. In the last years the playing of tennis is more and more unpopular (in Germany) Do you have a tip how to motivate teenagers in the age of 15 - 17 or in general to play tennis? sorry for my english
Your English is great, Dan. That's a tough question, one that huge organizations full of smart people are spending millions of dollars to try and answer. I can't tell you why, but if you love the game don't let it stop you from pursuing it! It isn't one of the "cool" sports here in the US either, not by a long shot. -Ian
Essential Tennis - Lessons and Instruction for Passionate Players Thanks for your answer :)
Get a new number one tennis player from Germany. (oh wait Kerber did that)
satjiwan thats not what i ment
tennis is not for everyone lol.. it is very difficult and challenging, a lot of people rather play something more easy and popular
I'm 14 years old. Should I use a semi western grip?
do you guys have lessons if so are there sigh ups?
Good job Ian!
Ian I can't find the action plan can you please link it? Thanks.
The finish with space between head and racquet, is it necessary? He seems to be stiffer to get that... And that way the drill seems to teach buggy whip ala nadal, IMHO
HI Ian could you make a video on how you can measure Your own skill. So you can know if you are a for an exsample a 3.5 or 4.0.Thankes in advance
Do a Google search for "NTRP rating". -Ian
how to close the racket face at contact point? is it the grip ? or is it the swing path?? my racket face always open at contact point and Im using eastern forehand grip. Please Please anyone teach me
This is amazing. More videos like this please!
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching.
Thanks Ian, this was great!
So my main question is; can you do something similar about the serve? My serve is not really a weapon and I can't find a way to fix it. Could you do a video on how to get an effective serve for small guys like me?
Serve video just got published today: ruclips.net/video/XsdIWmie78Y/видео.html
Hey! Really loved this video though I'd really appreciate it if you could make an Ultimate Double handed (or one handed) Backhand... since I know many people like me need help with my backhand. Thanks! 😊😊
Backhand coming :-)
***** Great Thanks! I also saw your guys ultimate serve video and it was amazing! Thank you so much!
Thank you very much for this excellent Video!
Loved this kind of video.
please somethinks like this for one hand back hand. You are the best!
Corey has a two handed backhand but I'm sure we'll work with a one hander soon. -Ian
amazing video. please do a video like this on two handed backhand
On the way. -Ian
Excellent video
Nice progress. I think i need to raise my racket higher also
Lots of players do, Chau. You should record yourself to find out for sure! -Ian
thanks Ian !
Great Stuff !! Thank you !!
