I have watched countless videos trying to learn how to make a background for my daughter's bearded dragon, but yours is by far the best we've watched and honestly the easiest to follow. thank you so much for taking the time to share your knowledge. wish us luck!
Those holes give it character and makes it look more realistic. Noticing the sandstone formations in Arizona and New Mexico, as the stone weathers, minerals get washed out of the rock and leaves holes. I understand about the crickets though, but I give mine a few places to hide so my bearded dragon doesn't gobble them all up at once and when they get hungry or thirsty, they'll make their way to the food and water where the lizard likes to hunt. Great job though, looks museum quality.
Thanks for sharing this despite not being a big camera fan. There isn't as much information on skills and techniques for this kinda stuff as I thought so I really appreciate people that take the time to show whats worked for them!
Your first coat looked better than 90% of the rock wall videos out there. I had no idea the spray foam was so easy to work with. I think all the holes add character. I would suggest applying a silicone dab just proud of the surface immediately after the completed carving. If the paint doesn’t stick to a silicone bead, maybe a quick mix of sawdust and wood glue. Thanks for sharing!
Absolutely fantastic build bud..you've pretty much nailed the natural look. I like your idea of airbrushing instead of dry brushing. And the black wash really makes it look weathered like natural rocks.
Thanks mate appreciate it. The air brushing was just an idea I had that may work and I’d never even seen an airbrush before but I decided to give it a shot and it paid off.
@@Cambart1 ahaha it'll all come down to who feeds him 😆 😆 usually the way Can't wait to binge watch a load of your builds this week whilst I'm off work lol
Thanks mate I do spray the expanding foam with water just sometimes I don’t show it or applying it in massive amounts doesn’t allow water or air to get in it hence the softer gooey bits. I do fine over time it definitely dries up but not overnight.
The water is to assist the expanding foam in expanding and curing properly. Without it it may cause soft goey parts on the bottom due to the glass having no moisture.
Dude, what a gift you have. I can't wait to try this. I have a 4x2x2. Do you think it would be better to spray a board out side of the tank to get it just right & then place the board in the tank?
Can do it either way mate. I have done a large scale 3 panel background that got installed into a mates enclosure. I personally think a built in one looks better and is a bit more of a practical background but both ways work. I have videos on my channel explaining both options.
Totally inspired! I've got my list and off to adventure at Bunnings... aiming for a removable wall/ledge for our Pygmy Bearded Dragon. Will have a wood base and a mesh wire frame I reckon for stability/durability *insert thinking face* Thanks for all the details. Much appreciated!
I’m glad I could help you out. I recommended watching my more current build videos as I have changed small details which I found to be more efficient and makes the finished product more realistic. Good luck with your build and if you have and questions feel free to contact me through Facebook or Insta.
Great video, love your work ! I have a small question.. in Holland i cant find dunlop tile pointing, what could be a good alternative? Im not sure what to look for :) Thanks
Unfortunately it is a product only available in Australia. It’s a commonly used product in the way our roofs are constructed. An alternative but not the same would be wall and floor tile grout.
You could but to get the paint to only cover where the foam is would be difficult. Having the foam in place and following those lines makes it a streamline look
Not really a lot involved in the build. Expanding foam Roof Tile Pointing Acrylic Paints Literally all the products I use to build. In more recent videos I use an insulation foam panel which a more dense foam
So because you aren't sealing it at the end, I'm assuming that tile pointing is non toxic to reptiles? I'm thinking of doing this instead of my last coat of grout do avoid having to seal it at the end
Yeah it’s safe for reptiles. When I used to make mine from grout also I still Didn’t seal them either. Found any sealer made them look too glossy and wet.
@@Cambart1 Oh okay sweet! Thanks for your speedy reply, it's super appreciated. The only thing I've heard is the the mould + bacteria inhibitor in the grout is unsafe.
@@jessicalang5805 I’ve never heard of grout having a mould and bacteria Inhibiter before. I’ve had unsealed grout backgrounds in my tank for a while now with no dramas. Most other people that build with grout don’t seal also. Biggest thing with unsealed anything is just making sure mess is cleaned up regularly and swiftly so it doesn’t have time to really soak in. A warm water wash with a soft brush and followed by a reptile safe cleaner like F10 and it’s all good.
@@jessicalang5805 no problem. If using grout just be sure to mix it correctly. If it’s not it will crack and in most cases not stick to the foam and fall off. Good luck
I would be guessing if I said yes as I haven’t tested that. I’d say holding water it would eventually soak into the pointing and leak through like most concrete or cement products. If you were to make a pond with it you’d probably need to add a sealer or something similar. There would be much better products out there to use for a pond base I would think.
Definitely have a play around with it. If you were to waterproof before hand I’d use either bitumen pond sealer or the black crommelin one. Sika flex any internal corner junctions if you have any. Don’t use silicone as the waterproofing won’t stick to it.
No mate completely different compound. Tile grout is just to fill the joints of walls and floor tiles, firm but very brittle. Tile pointing is designed for use on Australian tile roofs. It’s a firm feel compound yet flexible so it expands and contracts in extreme weather without cracking.
As far as I know mate it’s only available in aus. I’m not sure what products are available to you but I know in America people use Dryloc which I think is similar to what I use but not certain as I can’t get that here
Thank you. I find that is you’re using the cans with the soft tube nozzle you’ll need to lay it down. If using it with the expanding foam gun you can generally get it to stay on while leaving the tank upright you just need to go slow and do it in smaller sections at a time.
Curious about your Dunlop tile pouring. Does it have a grit to it? We don’t have this in Switzerland, nor Drylok. Plain mortar doesn’t adhere like I want it when thin. Can any tile adhesive be used?
It’s a cement based product that has a concrete texture finish to it. I’m not sure sorry what you can use in Switzerland unfortunately. The coating I use isn’t a tile adhesive used in wall and floor tiles. It’s used for our roof tiles to seal the ridge lines etc. if you have a product that is used to fill the gaps in wall and floor tiles (we call it tile grout) that will work better than mortar mix.
@@Cambart1 Hey thanks for the fast response. Seems ideal for what I’m building .(2.5m x 1.5m w/waterfall). I tried mortar and it just turned the foam dusty when thinned. I have a bit of Drylok sent to me from California, but not enough… Good to know it’s not normal tile adhesive. Maybe I need to see what’s available here and try to explain in German…

Spraying the foam with water as you go helps it harden. When it’s that thick, it can’t get the water it needs from the air to properly harden.
