I have been a photographer for over 30 years and always just used bridge in Photoshop and folders etc. However this video has given me the knowledge to get more organised. I have seen loads of Lightroom videos on you tube but this one nails it from a photographers prospective, I will watch this on my iPad whilst following it to guide me through the process on my iMac - great stuff Nigel and thanks.
I've been trying to find my own workflow system for a couple of years, and I keep tweaking it, so by now it is not very uniform. So your video is perfect for me right now (January 2019) to start out the new year with a simple, quarterly filing system. I also learned a lot about your rating process which I think will help me become much more efficient during my first sort through the images after a shoot. I am now capturing more multiple images (several frames per second) and I have many more images to delete. Also, you've inspired me to create a few of my own presets for developing and exporting. I have been doing the same things over and over, so I look forward to becoming even more efficient. Your presentation style is calm, professional, and concise. THANK YOU Nigel!
Nigel, I know this video is old but I am just now seeing it. New to Lightroom and have been trying to learn and this is by far the best video I have seen! Thank you for doing it and for explaining things to clearly! I imagine I will watch it over and over as I try to organize my Lightroom photos.

Brilliant. Thank you! I have to admit, I've always been so focused on Develop, even after some 14,000 photos edited, that I haven't ever clicked out of Develop over to "Map". I've always just geo-tagged in Flickr when I upload, or assumed it was going to be super complicated through a sync device. I have to admit, super embarassed. Mind blown. Thank you. THIS is why these types of tutorial videos are brilliant.

One thing i didn't get was if your exported files were in the same folders (e.g 2017>Q1>"subfolder name">"Full res JPG"), or in another year ("2017" for example) folder?. Also, do you use only one catalog? I recently discovered your channel and I've got to say that you're amazing. You really stand out because you have a natural gift for transmitting knowledge.
Very helpful process Nigel. I usually organise as different catalogue. But recently it was becoming a little long process to edit a picture of different date/trip quickly. so really appreciated.

This was quite helpful. I like the quarterly and then shoot name organization. I have been doing monthly and even weekly and shoot name. It is extra work and really hasn't helped me that much. I also like reformatting the SD card only after everything is backed up. That makes more sense to me. I have been reluctant to clear the card and end up with full cards that I have never gone back to. I'd like to see more of these post shoot types of videos.
So many top photographers use Lightroom but I am nervous about it because I had a catalog file corrupt so I lost all my edits and ratings. Still pondering whether or not to give up on Exposure 6 and return to LR. Fantastic video Nigel!

Fantastic video. I really like how you organize by quarter, and I've already set up my 2018 folder that way! I've never used the "stars" method sorting, just "pick", but I can see how it can be useful. Thanks so much for this, really helpful.

I think I'm going to make a late new years resolution to sort out my Lightroom workflow. Being a bit of a gear head, I started my folder system by camera then year then month then date. I've been thinking, about taking the camera bit out, Lightroom meta data covers that. Also my date structure is too deep, I like your Q1,2,3,4 method. I'd be tempted to go monthly, but that might highlight my lack of productivity lately a bit too much for comfort ;-) My key-wording is also hit and miss. At least I backup with plenty of redundancy. Thanks for all the tips, your passion is, as always, very inspiring.
I'm watching your video for a couple of years now but somehowe I have never seen this video before. I with I would have seen it earlier. I always struggle with my lightroom catalogus. I can never find a good way of storing everything. This is just an amazing example of what is possible. I have to do this for the past 10 years. Only proble is that I lost my lightroom catalogus due to computer changes and I have to re edit every old picture before 2021. Maybe something for the dark winter days...

Dear Nigel, i use Lightroom for years now and stil struggling with the method of organizing. I just bought two new external HD's to back up in a better way. this morning i discovered that by moving the images from the old external HD's to my Imac and then into the new External HD's, two day's ago, i lost all my images from my Icelandtrip back in October. PANIC this morning! Then i remembered i probably still saved them on my Mackbook (wich was with me in Iceland) so i was lucky enough to recover them. Now your video i am going to take as an example to reorganise my workflow, it came just in time, thanks for that👏 Regards, Ben

Great video on workflow. Have you changed your workflow over the years. With lightroom and lightroom classic now options do you still stick with classic or do you move back and forth between them now.
Great tutorial - Searching for ways to consolodate and protect my archive. Wonder how much you worry about edits made in LR should be preserved. For a time I was exporting the dngs procesed so I could access from bridge with ajustments (2019 moved from bridge to LR for process and had a catalog corupt in midst of big edit/process - Burnt). With space running short over multiple backups and going back through to clear out, need to change the way I do things. Do you have more videos on this you could point me to - Thanks really enjoyed and love your images!
Hi Nigel, great video. I stopped 2/3rds of the way to save it and send a like and make this comment. I realize this video is over 18 months old now and I wonder if you've done any updates? I'm in my late 60s and have been shooting personally for 20 years and shot portraits professionally for studios and for myself for 5 to 6 years. Now my main shooting is landscape, wildlife and family photography. Sorry, I'll get to the point. I have for years waffled back and forth organizing my images and video between date and subject. In many cases I did both. Yours is the first video I've seen that helped come to final decision on how I wish to catalog my images and video so thank you very much for putting this out there. Keywording and naming has always been an issue as well. Do you have any tips especially file naming or do you just leave your camera filename and rely on keywording? Before Lightroom I used other programs which were primarily just browsers to be able to add exif and iptc data but they had limitations because of lack of sorting and searching. For example, the one I used mostly was BreezeBrowser Pro (BBPro) and DownloaderPro. BBPro was good because it had exif, iptc capability as well as some minor image manipulation, which is all I needed because I don't like image manipulation beyond basic processing. Anyway, if you kept reading this far I appreciate and found your video helpful.
Some great tips there, I really like the cataloguing method using year, quarter etc. I have always created a new folder for each day’s shoot but left the naming as is, so looking through for a particular shoot can be a nightmare! I think I will have to spend some time going through and reorganising the whole lot!

I use a similar procedure for importing and organizing but I copy the images in folders from the card using windows explorer since it is much faster than Lightroom especially with M.2 drives then add the folder to the Lightroom catalog. As for culling I only pick photos I don't waste time rejecting if the photo isn't picked then it means it is rejected.
We organise in a similar way, I like the Quarterly thing, think I might pinch this for my workflow, a very helpful vlog, thanks a lot. I have a habit of keeping my Raw, Jpgs and Tiffs on different drives, bit of an OCD thing I think, less anyone does it.

So spooky Nigel, just been researching this very topic the last 2 days, so the timing of your vlog was perfect. Really simplified this for me as I think I was starting to make it more complicated than it should be. In terms of geo tagging, I’ve been trying out the Geokit app on my iPhone as this allows you export data of where you’ve been and overlays this with your images in lightroom to map your locations. So far results look promising Think the t-shirt is ace as well 👍🏼
It is really nice to see someone show how they organise they're work through the computer, how ever it would be nice to see how you organise your place's through google earth like how you add your locations with a photo and discription of ideas, just an idea of a new video if you are upto the challenge.
Hi Nigel, are the exported folders structure the same as original file ie 2017 folder is the same where you have your original Q1, Q2 etc folders. Or is exported a separated folder structure. This answer would help out a lot of folks. Thanks

Hi Nigel. Currently trying to sort my library. Couple of questions. 1. Do you export and save your edits or do you just keep them in the Lightroom folders and export if and when you need them? 2. After certain PS edits and a TIFF is created back into Lightroom do you also keep that file stored in your hard drive with the others in that folder? Any info is hugely appreciated. Thanks
I have watched your video with great interest and there is one crucial point which I cant figure, I have two external hard drives both hooked up to my mac book pro both plug and play types, now I expect to see them both in Finder and within my Lightroom Classic cc Library which I do, but they are listed under my Macintosh HD Online network as volumes ! this HD part shows the Green led light to show it to be online. Why is this not the case with my external hard drives Nigel? There is nothing otherwise wrong with either of the drives but how can I alter their status ! or can this not be done ? I would sure apprieciate your thoughts on this, thanks.

I think I might have to steal that idea as a new year's resolution too...
I put multiple cameras in same folder as can easily filter afterwards... good New Years resolution! 👍👍👍

Hi Nigel, great video. I stopped 2/3rds of the way to save it and send a like and make this comment. I realize this video is over 18 months old now and I wonder if you've done any updates? I'm in my late 60s and have been shooting personally for 20 years and shot portraits professionally for studios and for myself for 5 to 6 years. Now my main shooting is landscape, wildlife and family photography. Sorry, I'll get to the point. I have for years waffled back and forth organizing my images and video between date and subject. In many cases I did both. Yours is the first video I've seen that helped come to final decision on how I wish to catalog my images and video so thank you very much for putting this out there. Keywording and naming has always been an issue as well. Do you have any tips especially file naming or do you just leave your camera filename and rely on keywording? Before Lightroom I used other programs which were primarily just browsers to be able to add exif and iptc data but they had limitations because of lack of sorting and searching. For example, the one I used mostly was BreezeBrowser Pro (BBPro) and DownloaderPro. BBPro was good because it had exif, iptc capability as well as some minor image manipulation, which is all I needed because I don't like image manipulation beyond basic processing. Anyway, if you kept reading this far I appreciate and found your video helpful.
Some great tips there, I really like the cataloguing method using year, quarter etc. I have always created a new folder for each day’s shoot but left the naming as is, so looking through for a particular shoot can be a nightmare! I think I will have to spend some time going through and reorganising the whole lot!

You won’t regret it! Makes a big difference
I use a similar procedure for importing and organizing but I copy the images in folders from the card using windows explorer since it is much faster than Lightroom especially with M.2 drives then add the folder to the Lightroom catalog. As for culling I only pick photos I don't waste time rejecting if the photo isn't picked then it means it is rejected.

We organise in a similar way, I like the Quarterly thing, think I might pinch this for my workflow, a very helpful vlog, thanks a lot. I have a habit of keeping my Raw, Jpgs and Tiffs on different drives, bit of an OCD thing I think, less anyone does it.

So spooky Nigel, just been researching this very topic the last 2 days, so the timing of your vlog was perfect. Really simplified this for me as I think I was starting to make it more complicated than it should be.
In terms of geo tagging, I’ve been trying out the Geokit app on my iPhone as this allows you export data of where you’ve been and overlays this with your images in lightroom to map your locations. So far results look promising

It is really nice to see someone show how they organise they're work through the computer, how ever it would be nice to see how you organise your place's through google earth like how you add your locations with a photo and discription of ideas, just an idea of a new video if you are upto the challenge.

Hi Nigel, are the exported folders structure the same as original file ie 2017 folder is the same where you have your original Q1, Q2 etc folders. Or is exported a separated folder structure. This answer would help out a lot of folks. Thanks

Hi Nigel. Currently trying to sort my library. Couple of questions.
1. Do you export and save your edits or do you just keep them in the Lightroom folders and export if and when you need them?
2. After certain PS edits and a TIFF is created back into Lightroom do you also keep that file stored in your hard drive with the others in that folder?
Any info is hugely appreciated.

I have watched your video with great interest and there is one crucial point which I cant figure, I have two external hard drives both hooked up to my mac book pro both plug and play types, now I expect to see them both in Finder and within my Lightroom Classic cc Library which I do, but they are listed under my Macintosh HD Online network as volumes ! this HD part shows the Green led light to show it to be online. Why is this not the case with my external hard drives Nigel? There is nothing otherwise wrong with either of the drives but how can I alter their status ! or can this not be done ? I would sure apprieciate your thoughts on this, thanks.
