  • Join Kevin Hazzard and John Moon as they discuss Hazzard's latest book, American Sirens: The Incredible Story of the Black Men Who Became America's First Paramedics.
American Sirens tells the origin story of EMS in the United States: how a group of "unemployable" Black men from urban communities of Pittsburgh became the first in the nation to provide advanced level, out-of-hospital care. Hazzard details Moon's rise through the ranks, the beginnings of national EMS standards written by Dr. Nancy Caroline, and the vision of Dr. Peter Safar, inventor of CPR and champion of the Freedom House cause.

I recently read American Sirens and A Thousand Naked Strangers. Both are fabulous books which should be required reading for all EMS curriculum.
