    Thank you very much for an honest and thorough review Joel! We value your opinion greatly, and we also enjoy watching you put the ZYYX to good use!
    Some feedback regarding the price:
    If you want to have all the latest technical features and/or have an interest in tweaking and tuning your 3D printer, the ZYYX is probably not for you. Instead we try to offer an attractive package for office and educational use.
    In all fairness we have had automatic build plate calibration, a closed chamber, fume filtering, removable build plate, filament monitoring, failed print monitoring, design for maintenance, support for flexible materials and an open filament system since 2014, and we still believe this constitutes a good technical offering for our type of customers.
    Our customers typically choose the ZYYX for the high print reliability and safe office/school use, as opposed to the price level or technical completeness.
    If anyone’s interested in learning more about the ZYYX+ or our new professional ZYYX pro carbon fiber 3D Printer, feel free to contact a local reseller of the ZYYX line or visit us at www.zyyx3dprinter.com/
    Sorry for the hassle with the TPU-spools. We are continuously working with our supplier to improve the quality of our filaments.
    Regarding ABS performance, as you mentioned our build plate has great adhesion. The concept relies on the use of a raft when printing with ZYYX proABS and the supplied spatula to carefully pry off the print. This works well for most smaller ABS prints, but for really good ABS performance we nowadays recommend our ZYYX pro with heated chamber.
    Keep up the good work, and may the filament force be with you!
    /ZYYX

    You mentioned that it uses the open source firmware sailfish, but no mention if they have released the source for their version. Is the hardware open sourced? It may be odd, but as an owner of a Lulzbot and a Prusa, open source hardware companies matter to me. If a company is releasing their products under an open source license, I am willing to spend a bit more money units just to support them.

    Even if the bed holds on to ABS, you need to heat the ambient temperature to get ABS from cracking and shrinking as it cools -- the enclosed chamber is nice, but only if there was a heat source (simple way to get a heat source into a printer is a heated bed, too bad no one thought of that).... Direct drive extruder is nice, and if it had a heated bed -- I say -- great machine -- worth the price -- for that kind of money I shouldn't be expected to swap out the bed to come up with a heated bed alternative.

    Joel, you mentioned the calibration cube and calibrating the machine. I need to calibrate my printer, however there is a lot of misinformation out there on how to do it.
    REQUEST: Can you produce a video on proper calibration? Or if there is already one out there somewhere, got the link?
    Thanks for being awesome! and HIGH FIVE!

    I use the Zyyx since 2016 now and it is still printing very good. I prefer printing not tinkering on the printer. I also have an other printer with a heated build plate so I know both worlds. The Zyyx build plate is easy to use and immedialty ready again after a print. Also not to mention less power consumption… I also like the capability printing with rubber materials with the softer extruder spring.

    Have you noticed any sort of pattern in recent years when it comes to new printer releases? Do you see companies release new models always around the same time, or do you get a steady rate of printers to review year long?
    I'm curious because an updated best of video would be great, but wouldn't make sense if you had a bunch of new contenders coming right around the corner.

  • @WhereNerdyisCool

    Well I give it points for having an enclosure and filtration...that's nice...but no auto bed leveling? It does seem a bit expensive when you consider other printers within that price (Lulzbot Taz6, Ultimaker 2+, etc).

  • @FranklyPeetoons
    @FranklyPeetoons 6 лет назад

    Very diplomatic review. That price is crazy.
    Maybe you could plug a USB thumb drive into the TV behind you with a test pattern or logo or grey screen or something until you get proper video routed to it. The dark screen is drivin' me nuts!

    Joel, a question & consideration for these reviews. When you purchase higher priced machines like this are you also getting better quality component? ie stepper motors, mother boards, etc. I see a lot of individuals buying cheaper machines(cr10) & having problems or having to upgrade stuff to get them to work. You know I personally went with a gMax to give myself the best starting experience in 3d printing(& no i know not everyone can afford a gMax, it took me a yr+ to save up to get mine), but I've got quality components & have had only a few glitches to deal with. Please comment thoughts. Thanks

  • @GregAllen2
    @GregAllen2 6 лет назад

    Thanks for the review. Well done as always... I am going to side with the "way over priced" group on this one. At this price point I would expect a heated bed for sure and probably a mains power heated bed at that for quick and stable heating. This should also be equipped with linear rails not rods and a ball screw not a lead screw. The bed should also be supported in the front as well. Basically for 2k I want better print quality. This entails eliminating the mechanical shortcomings that introduce errors in the prints. These mechanics aren't any better than on my AM8's. On the feature set why is there no touch screen or built in WiFi? The specs also indicate only 1/16 micro stepping which is also sub par. (this makes my question the quality of the mainboard) For comparison I built a 300x300x300 HyperCube Evolution using 3030 extrusions, 4, 12mm rods to support the 1/4" thick ATP5 machined aluminum bed. (it's flat!) The bed also has a mains power silicone heater. For electronics it's running a Duet WiFi Board with a 7" color touch screen display. Going to argue that this is probably the best printer control board on the market... The total price for this build was $880. This was over the counter pricing. If you are a manufacturer you buy at wholesale and that number drops significantly. I understand that this may not be an option for people that do not want to build their own. So I am arguing for you! I don't want you to get over charged! With that said, this appears to be targeted at the education sector not the individual. Since institutions have a large budget they are able to increase their profit margin.
    Cheers,
    Greg

  • @JeffDM

    I'm mixed on this. I like that it's enclosed but I also like to have some heat somehow. A gaping slot for the umbilical would seem to negate the filtering. The finish on the Nitro box, among others, leaves a lot to be desired. There's some kind of banding that I suspect means a rough bearing somewhere.
    Sailfish is PITA to work with and I don't recommend it. I like S3D but it doesn't band-aid over the Sailfish. In no point in my 3d printing hobby experience did I find that I never needed to try another slicer. They all have quirks that meant me occasionally hopping onto another program to build the part efficiently, and needing to translate the file is a turn-off. It may be only one part in a hundred but still.

      I'm a bit late to the party on this (relatively new to the scence, still catching up on Joel's videos). I'm also unimpressed with the Nitro Box.
      Joel calls it a "perfect print" but it's missing the top 10% or so of the model. Compare with the original model at: Crash Bandicoot Planters by FLOWALISTICK, www.thingiverse.com/thing:2358365

    Well i have one and is very satisfied with it. it is my second printer (first was a reprap) and i like the start print and forget style. it is also prepared for upgrade with that mightyboard (motherboard) ready for dual extruder (not plug and play) and the extruder part is very easy to upgrade.
    Many of the component can be found on the Mbot3D.
    Zyyx has mostly upgrade it and there is 2 version of it (zyyx v1) zyyx+ and zyyx pro. v1 i do think is discontinued (it had a plastic extruder mount and y mount) to make room for the upgraded zyyx+ and next lvl pro series.

      I use maskingtape on the classic buildplate when printing tpu. The masking tape then sticks on the model but I get it off the buildplate... I also have the flexible buildplate now, but not yet testet with tpu... I now have 10.000 Meters / 30 Kg filament through this printer 😆 Regarding the rising power kwh-costs in Germany, the non heated buildplates are more and more appreaceated.

    A non heated build platform that ABS stick too well to? Shut up and take my money. In all seriousness what type of magic surface does it have? As far as the price I don't get people that say this is an expensive printer? Compared to what? It has a similar (a bit larger) build volume to an Ultimaker 2+, both machines were released around the same time also. So compared to an UM2+ the ZYYX+ is 300 $ cheaper, it includes a license for a 150$ software (S3D) and has the enclosure included while for an UM2+ you would have to get a 185$ enclosure kit. So compared to an Ultimaker 2+ or a Makergear M3 this machine is a bargain. Now comparing it to a Prusa i3 MK2S or a Flashforge Creator Pro or a CR-10, yeah it is expensive, but I don't think that is an in depth and fair comparison. I do agree though, if you are not looking for features, build quality, support and a quiet printer, then sure there are a lot cheaper machines out there that print just as well.

    • @GMCLabs
      @GMCLabs 6 лет назад

      Greg El just because it sticks does not mean the print will be successful. I have had abs prints crack and split with a heated bed and enclosure while still being firmly stuck to the build plate.

    • @eddiemoser3150
      @eddiemoser3150 6 лет назад

      I would be willing to put money on my Prusa MK3 putting out higher quality prints for the $799 shipped to my house. Blah Blah no enclosure slightly smaller build surface... Well, I also have a CR-10 which I would be willing to put money on printing as well if I need a bigger print and I am still coming in at a lower price point by almost half including an enclosure. Now, if I am brand new to 3D Printing and 2k isn't an issue I agree there is merit to comparing it to the UM2+.

    • @Dramaican88
      @Dramaican88 6 лет назад

      +Gary Carone Oh yes, I know and the ABS blend matters a lot and part cooling for details vs layer adhesion matters as well. I just have not heard of a surface material that requires zero heat to provide adhesion. Even coatings like magigoo, dimafix, printafix, 3Dlac etc or surfaces like buildtak provide adhesion when heated and you can remove the part after the surface has cooled down. This is the first surface I have heard of that works with ABS completely cold and that is why I asked about the material.
      +Eddie Moser I also agree with you and I would get the MK3 (assembled or kit) any time for the features+print quality to price ratio and just make a DIY enclosure, but still you get my point. Some printer manufacturers have not caught up with the Prusa and the cheap far east printers and still think they are competing with ultimaker, makerbot, lulzbot, zortrax and the "big names" that were big 3 years ago, so they price their machines to compete with those. Just take a look at the MatterHackers site, the prices they have for assembled machines and then at Joel's TAZ 6 review. Tell me why Joel highly recommended the TAZ 6 ("my finals thoughts are buy this, buy this machine") and did not screenshot the TAZ 6 price from MH site? Isn't the MK2S or MK3 a far better value compared to the TAZ 6? I am not interested in the ZYYX+, I have a modded Felix printer, making a custom one from scratch and I would recommend the Prusa MK3 to everyone looking for a 3D printer these days. However comparing the ZYYX+ review with the TAZ 6 review, I can see that Joel is biased and not very honest on this.

    There sure are a lot of print issues for a $2000 machine. Sounds like the manuf needs to spend more time testing and adjusting each machine before being sent out.
    "if money is no object...", hehehe.

    A Air Filter is cool, but everything else is what you can get on cheaper Machines.
    And if you're a new Millionaire you should go for a Ultimaker or other crazy Machines. ;)

    $2000 I would almost rather make my own 3d printer.

    no way this justifies such a price. you can get same or better printers for less.

    For that price range a ultimaker might make more sense.
