I'm in Leesburg, VA, Charles Town is about a 30 minute drive, have been there many times but mainly to go to the race track. The reason Charles Town average income is higher is because many commute to DC for the higher paying jobs, same with Martinsburg lots of residents are DC commuters. When I commuted in and out of DC before I retired, lots of WV plates using the toll road.
This area is geographically the closest part of WV to where I live (York, Pennsylvania). I have been there a few times in the past 10-12 years (most recently in March of this year). I will say that this is an area that is indeed more "suburban" than "rural." Not only is the area a DC exurb, but since Jefferson and Berkeley County have some of the lowest elevations (meaning not rugged), homes are rapidly being built. That's why Interstate 81 had to be widened recently. I will say that Shepherdstown (about 15 minutes from Charles Town) is a great little college town with a lot of history. I grew up about 45 minutes from C-Town in Northern VA and I absolutely love it. I was just there last weekend in fact. Once I get enough money to buy a house it’s gonna be in that area. Great video!
I lived and worked in Martinsburg, WV (in the aforementioned Eastern Panhandle) for a year and absolutely loved it. I had to drive over to Frederick, MD to deposit my check in my bank, but MAN, what a beautiful drive! On the way back I would drive through Harper's Ferry. I believe that is TRULY the most beautiful part of America (that is not purple mountains majesty, and all). The people, for the most part, we decent, and there was no overly noticeable crime (except quite of meth and drunk driving, but show me where that AIN'T, anymore). All things considered, I would go back there in a heartbeat.
@Jack Parker I don't know Pocahontas County, it's located more in the body of the state, and my experience is with Berkley and Jefferson counties in the Eastern Panhandle. But, if you're settled on WV, I would check out the Harper's Ferry area in Jefferson County, at the confluence of the Potomac and the Shenandoah...it's gorgeous!
There’s not an area a house is worth $350 k. People moving here have destroyed the housing market for locals. I have lived in WV my entire life , almost 57 years. People relocating here brought both drugs and crime. It’s a shame. It might have been a poor state. But it was a wholesome one.
Your complaint is the same from every state where people are moving in. Just a few examples, Texas, Nevada, Utah they are all complaining about Californians moving in. Well complain to your local developers in the area. There are the ones that are making the money on development. When those people move in they are wanting schools for their kids and hospitals , shopping malls, Basically everything that they’re moving from in the big cities and yes, your crime rate will go up.
I lived in Gore, VA, near Winchester, VA, so pretty. Was more of a vacation house that I lived in full time for a couple of years- and the WV line ran through my yard- 5 acres. So paid WV tax on 2 acres, VA tax on 3 acres and the house...great people, rolling hills, quiet, views. Winchester a lovely town, good potential for a video, Nick.
Guys I went to high school in early 1970s played the horses at the Charles Town Race Track. Harper's Ferry is beautiful. You can live 5 miles away and have plenty of space. 1974 my partner and i won 2nd place in the Canoe and C-1&2 races. Compton Rapids near Front Royal I went canoeing once and rolled over. Learning.
there's zero opportunity in WV if you feel as if that's a good reason to move to a different hivemind (although california has plenty of right-wing pockets)
Well... if that is the case then they need to pay DC metro money! They have always paid low income to the people and still do. That is the only reason I haven't moved back there I did love it there back in 2005.
This West Virginian has a whole different perspective. Personally, I don't like new people from metro areas moving here. They come and expect to be accepted into the community too soon. They seem to forget the other people in "the diner" have known each other all of our lives. Our jokes are our jokes. If we call a guy Jug because his ears stick out like a jug handle, you can bet we earned that right as kids by fighting Jug over it. You haven't fought Jug...yet. You might want to call him John. He's still pretty tough and most city boys are going to lose that one. He still doesn't really like the "handle" Jug. They also seem to have a superiority complex and look down on us "dumb hillbillies". Just stay in the place you helped destroy and help fix it up again instead of coming here and screwing up our way of life. We might be "dumb hillbillies" but for some reason you want to live among us. I get it, you want your kids to have a better place to grow up but what you'll end up doing is turning "our place" into "your place". You'll bring the crime right along with you. I've seen it and it sucks. Farms swallowed up and McMansion boulevard appears. Beauty gone and tacky put in it's place. Get bent. Stay put. We don't want you here. We may be "poor" but we like our way of life. Kind of like the Native Americans liked their way of life. We don't need or want to change.
You tell them Brother. We don't want or need these big feeling outsiders messing with us and as always making fun of us. And this stinking video was full of WV smears. Keep Out!
@@treeguyable Most West Virginians regret leaving if they do leave. Most end up coming back later on in life. Some of the returning hillbillies are almost as bad as foreigners. Their heads are twisted and it takes them some time to readjust, but at least we remember them and they do come back around. City dwellers on the other hand...Stay put.
If you look at the map I suggest leaving the casino at 5 am to get to CIA headquarters. Get home before 3 pm in the afternoon. Traffic could be better if Maryland built a new bridge near Whites Ferry. People drive all the way south to Potomac VA, cross over to Potomac MD then drive all the way north to Gaithersburg. There used to be a ferry but the owners argued so no ferry and no bridge. Maryland owns the Potomac River.
Excellent video. My daughter is thinking on moving from Georgia to the Eastern panhandle of WV and I believe it's a great choice since we live in Maryland. Thanks
25min. He doesn’t like high property taxes, but talks about how great the schools are because of the property taxes. What the hell, John? Figure it out.
The problem is you Leftist never know when to stop raising taxes, that's why people are moving to low tax areas like Jefferson county. Which is more conservative....have you figured it out???
The guy being interviewed said if you drive an hour and a half down into West Virginia you’re going to find some of the most rural parts of WV and what West Virginia is known for. He’s not wrong! He even mentions Hampshire County at exactly 20:00! That’s me! Hampshire County born and bred! It definitely is a lot more rural, but West Virginia is such a beautiful place! I love our beautiful Mountain State!! Country roads take me home!!💙💛 Interesting video! Thanks for doing a little story/video on West Virginia!
New subscriber here. I’m binge watching your videos and I love your personality so much! Keep doing what your doing. It’s so much appreciated. Incase no one has told you. Have a beautiful positive day 🥰
They might as well give the WV panhandle to Virginia or Maryland. This area has a very different feel from the rest of WV. I live in south Florida and when I get into the Orlando area I feel like I'm no longer in my state. This seems similar as I've been through the central part of WV and when I was a kid we drove through the interstate here which I believe is 81.
People are running from MD and VA to live in the WV panhandle... obviously they arent doing something right and WV panhandle is.. We dont wanna be apart of MD or VA.
Lol good fucking like on the labor laws. I hope the job market can somehow find support for you but there's no jobs in WV. The roads are by far the worst in the US and they throw you in prison for weed.

I just left here 4 hours ago!! Wow! Guess what I was there for? Haha. Have gone here for over 10 years and have seen it grow into a pretty nice area! Even the casino is becoming nicer.
I used to live close to here when I lived in northern Virginia. I've been living in Central WV since 06 and this part of WV is still nice but feels much more different than the rest of the state. Its kind of more similar to Maryland or northern VA.
The thing is it’s such an excellently designed city, the roads and the resources are all so well used, no pollution. A city upon a hill. Looks like Gen z is well prepared for the future. Things are looking up

Everyone in the DC area knows Charles Town because of the casino. The first and only casino within a 4-5 hour drive for several years. I think most people here forgot about this town since all the casinos opened nearby. I forgot about this place until now.
Sounds like my mind was read long ago about the opportunity in Charles Town. I do want to hear more about this guy's dad driving to Vienna every day. I was in Sterling in 2004, and had a CT Coworker doing the commute. He said 2 hours on a good day. Vienna would be 3-4 hours on a bad day in the Fall when the kids are going back to school. I was in Reston, and had to quit my DC job, because it just was NOT Commutable by car, train, anything. Anyway, compared to Virginia, where the Woke crowd is taking over, prices are to the moon, and there is really "nothing to do", especially if you don't have children, it still looks like a doable idea for people with remote work options.
@@mikeohara1055 People from the way past always describe these commutes that are just impossible today. My uncle at Christmas talking about Vienna to DC, like he got through it, so should I. I am thinking; yes you toughed it out, back before there was a Dulles toll road, or even I-495, and 2 million less people in the area, Reston was just a drawing on paper..
@frost ice lol Tim was just talking about living in WV and showed footage of his studio there building on his mountain top acreage he owns .he left MD cause of taxes.
My Daddy drove from Charles Town into Arlington County Virginia 48 years. We own a nice home in belvedere heights about 1 mile from the casino. I grew up on the Shenandoah River about 2 miles from my home. We have a housing development being built about 200ft from our development. The one thing about new comers is stop bringing your B.S. with that you fled from.
So right, Tammy. Wife and I own acreage in Grant Co. We're always respectful of the folks out there. Not hard thing to do since most of them are decent folks , too .
I live in the Panhandle -- don't forget Charles Town is close to a university and does have a lot of stores and strip malls. The Casino has provided many, many jobs to include my son and DIL for a number of years. It is also only miles to Hagerstown, MD and Frederick, MD. Hospitals are West Virginia based and many specialists are close by.
The population growth in Berkeley County & Jefferson county are astounding. The WV Government released population trends thru the next 10 years a couple of weeks ago, the estimated population of Berkeley County in 2030 will pass 170,000. Berkeley County Council Records 180 new addresses every week in the county.
Barley over city status. Nice place. Wheeling WV is pretty nice. Gong to be in another year anyway. Downtown has been under construction for the last 4 or 5 years. They are just finishing up the streetscape project which is major facelift and several new building and hotels, parking garages. It's only 5 bux to park in a lot for a show in Wheeling. There is a lot of history in Wheeling as well as it was the original State Capitol and then again some years later and now it has gone back to Charleston for good. In the summer in wheeling there is a free concert out doors somewhere in wheeling damn near 3 days a week. Wheeling is a city that also lost a lot of population but people are coming. Secondary market for entertainment but we get some nice shows up here. Broadways shows in the theatre that we are currently putting a new flyrail in. They are building a lot of loft apartments and such. If you are an investor they have like a land bank where the city buys buildings that were left because of the cost to tear it down and you can get deals big time even on existing buildings that are empty if you have the money and and show a valid plan for a business of any kind to get into one of the empty storefronts. they are filing up.
Your videos are excellent it is like travelling to America without physically doing so . The comparisons of some places you show there are like what is here in Australia . The land and towns look similar . West Virginia in some respects is similar to the southern highlands in nsw Australia . The buildings look a bit different , architectural styles vary . America is a big place but also have noted the nightmares . You won’t see towns and cities that are that far gone in Australia . Not yet anyway
My father was born in Charles Town, WV & raised in Summit Point. I am familiar with Martinsburg, Inwood, Frederick, MD (where my mother was born), etc. I was born in Winchester, VA.

A lot of people in my family were restaurant owners also..New Martinsville is a nice little town that is south of Wheeling in Wetzel County
I have been living just up the road in Martinsburg for 22 years. In that short time things really have changed. You can catch the MARC commuter train (Martinsburg is the west end of the commuter line) People ride the train to DC every morning. Like Charlestown upscale homes have taken over the local rural areas. Traffic on Freeway 81 is INSANE. Housing/rental property have got way higher prices. Yes there's homeless, drugs, crime, But not as bad as D.C That's for sure. There's the AP trail, Potomac river, Shenandoah river, C&O canal, Plenty of outdoor activities. Sad to see the rural go away, But I'd rather be here than anywhere east of here in the D.C. area.
Nic my wife and I are interested in using you for consult. We currently live in a small town of 4000. Our concern is that we are apolitical and think both sides are crazy. You may think im a rightwing troll but just visit any far-left leaning city, and you will see Ukraine flags everywhere. Was in Durham, NC recently and this was certainly the case. You don't see republicans doing the same with their default profiles or businesses. At least be honest with your political views.
@@josephgarcia8209 is that because Republicans don’t support Ukraine or worse support Putin and Russia? Many in the right like Tucker Carlson do support Russia although many Republican politicians have been critical of Biden for not doing more to support Ukraine. Good luck to him, hope he finds a better place to live and doesn't bring his politics wherever he goes.
It was fun watching you drive through the town. My partner and I live right in the middle of Charles Town and Martinsburg and go to Charles Town almost everyday for shopping and doctor appointments. It was definitely a lot smaller over 10 years ago and now they just keep building. But there most definitely is a drug problem! Not to be a downer lol but honestly there are a lot of overdoses and cops busting houses. A house was raided on my road a few years ago. Definitely scary but at least the cops are on it and trying. But I thought almost every state was having drug issues? I feel more bad for the people than I do angry though. But not everyone is on drugs! There are tons of lovely people here. People will remember you if you come into their place of work and are usually always friendly. I like my space and privacy 😆 so its nice being on a private road but only a 10mins drive to Charles Town, Inwood, or martinsburg. Would love to see you cover Coatesville, PA one day. It’s a small hood like 30 minutes outside of Philly. But it’s a really weird place because coatesville has sections that are middle class, but nobody considers that coatesville. We consider the east end and the west end coatesville. The murder rate isn’t too bad. Only had a couple killings so far this year. But our hood is literally like 2 miles long and maybe a mile wide. Super small town over 100 years old n it’s a slum riddled with drugs roaches and bed bugs trash and houses condemned and falling apart. Only stores in town are foreign owned and family ran. But it’s got history. The Underground Railroad ran under the high school. That’s how it became populated and majority black. Also, lynchings became banned because of the final lynching in coatesville an innocent black man was pulled out the hospital handcuffed to his hospital bed, and burned him in the field then took pictures with pieces of his burnt body n kept them as trophies. Crazy history.
Wow on the history. See this is why I like this comment section. We get to learn more about areas locally. PA ...the Pocono's.. how that's changed as well. Poverty pockets all the way around in small forgotten townships further out on 84..The Underground railroad also went thru Peekskill NY which has turned around quiet a bit.
I have a girlfriend who just moved recently to Martinsburg, WV. I came to visit her, housing is really cheaper than MD. But, my girlfriend works in Rockville, MD and lives in Martinsburg, WV. Long commute.
Howard is right. You mentioned commuting to DC several times but didn't say much about how to do it. The MARC commuter train goes to Martinsburg, Duffields and Harpers Ferry, then Brunswick MD, maybe another 10 miles. I was born in Washington DC and lived there and the Maryland suburbs until after I retired. In 1999, I relocated to southwest Virginia. While some of my former coworkers were still at the office, I would go up there up a lot. I flatly refuse to pay DC-area lodging prices. I just don't like getting ripped off and I simply can't stand traffic. (been living in the country too long. LOL), So I'd get a room 40-60 miles out of town. There was one place in Knoxville (MD, not TN) that was$40/night until it went upscale. I stayed at the Turf Motel that was in your video one time and once in Martinsburg. I would then take the MARC train from Brunswick to Union Station in DC. It was $12 round trip. I'd meet my friends for lunch and go to some of my favorite haunts before catching the train back to Brunswick. It worked out great. I could park right in front of my room door. I've discovered that the more you pay for a room, the further you'll have to schlep your bags. A lot of people who work in Rockville and Silver Spring also use the MARC trains. There are Metro subway stations right next to both.

I live in Winchester Frederick County area over here Buy Greenwood Fire Hall
Sounded like John was bouncing a ball the whole while he spoke! Lol
Property taxes should be illegal.
Who’s going to pay for the schools?
Especially considering you paied taxes when the purchase was made.
Would mean higher sakes and income taxes then.
@@JhonnyBoithe income tax?
@@RogueSkull then they would have to up the income tax. Because property tax goes directly to the schools.

Harper's Ferry is beautiful.
You can live 5 miles away and have plenty of space.
1974 my partner and i won 2nd place in the Canoe and C-1&2 races.
Compton Rapids near Front Royal I went canoeing once and rolled over.

so many leading questions. Dude was chill and honest.
Great to see this video on WV, but the last place I want to move to is an area that's booming with hyper property appreciation.
this sounds like my town. a lot of subdivision came up and apartments.
in the past twenty years.
But Im in california about 25 miles from Fresno.
not like that around Charleston both directions. You can get some gorgeous homes for very little
As soon as my kids finish school in this Lib wasteland that is now California… heading to beautiful WV!

Wv is not a good state to move
there's zero opportunity in WV if you feel as if that's a good reason to move to a different hivemind (although california has plenty of right-wing pockets)
@ 0:35 I liked seeing the man on his lawn tractor pulling up to the gas pump. Doesn't get any more small town than that.
Hicksville. Class dismissed.
They also do that with 4 wheelers in the southern counties of the state
I live in Maryland and I hear the radio ads for the casino all the time 😂 charles town...races and slots!
There are tons of great towns in the Eastern Panhandle. A commuter can catch trains into DC.
Yes Frank
Thanks for posting this. I did a lot of research in the last year, visited the area, and absolutely fell in love. Can't wait to be a new CTian.
Harpers Ferry is technically a DC exurb, making it part of the dc metro area, pretty weird
Well... if that is the case then they need to pay DC metro money!
City dwellers on the other hand...Stay put.
what if they didn't help destroy it and where just born into it. makes sense they'd want to move
@@treeguyable yeah
@@treeguyable wait why? why is Va okay but when it comes to WVa all of the sudden it's a probelm?
Lol so true…
Considering the average wage in west virgina is 26,000 a year, yeah high property tax is not wanted.
My thoughts exactly. I went to school in Jefferson county they are not “the best schools in 100 mile radius.”
Daughter went to the school for the blind and Hampshire County is so gorgeous
I've lived in Mineral County my whole life. Just as good a place to live as any.

Oh, I was a little scared even by your videos about bad places, how good that you started talking about good places to live and move :)
Would you do one about Frederick County, MD? I have relatives who live there. Thanks!!
John is probably pump about all these people coming in because his property value has skyrocketed
Or they could give virgina and Maryland to west virgina.
and give the northern panhandle to Pa and Ohio too.......
People are running from MD and VA to live in the WV panhandle... obviously they arent doing something right and WV panhandle is.. We dont wanna be apart of MD or VA.
@@ashleymilian6679 yeah I guess they might as well move to West virginia. Basically the same landscape. It just intersects the two

Everyone in the DC area knows Charles Town because of the casino. The first and only casino within a 4-5 hour drive for several years. I think most people here forgot about this town since all the casinos opened nearby. I forgot about this place until now.
I live here and I love it. Moved here two years ago from Towson Maryland haven't looked back
Awesome, I'm moving there in July. Most of the people here know nothing about Charles Town.
Great Video as always Nick Johnson!
Ayy, nice to see a new series!
That is where Tim Pool ( of Tim Pool Podcast ) lives and he is building his studio there as well , leaving Maryland

Grew up in this area and I agree with pretty much everything said. I hate to say it, but I had to move away before I could really appreciate it.
I hail from *Winchestertonfieldville.* I HATE it when people from DC come to my backyard.
absolutely. It's like that here in Florida too, northerns come in to escape taxes and act like they are owed everything
So right, Tammy. Wife and I own acreage in Grant Co. We're always respectful of the folks out there. Not hard thing to do since most of them are decent folks , too
.
Charles Town is as close as you can get to Montgomery County MD and still be in WV. You can get to Montgomery County in about 35 minutes.
So I grew up in Frederick MD , you could make the 25-30 minute trip there if you wanted more of a entertainment hub close to Charles Town.
This is a great video. I can’t wait to watch the next one!
I live in Charles since 2017 . I love it here.
Bad-mouthing the rest of the state does not make Charles Town sound that much better.
My father was born in Charles Town, WV & raised in Summit Point. I am familiar with Martinsburg, Inwood, Frederick, MD (where my mother was born), etc. I was born in Winchester, VA.
I currently have a business that I can finish at home, and it's running very hard now, so I am looking for a low-cost place to stay. good episode, thank you
I was born and raised in Charles town, left in May 2013 for California. Thank you so much for this video!!!!! It felt like I was back home again 😀
This is why we moved to Charles Town WV🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸
Never worked in a coal mine but spent forty years plus in glass factories first in Paden City and then in Pennsylvania. My great grandparents came here from Belgium and were glass workers.
Sad to see the rural go away, But I'd rather be here than anywhere east of here in the D.C. area.
With the increase of homicides and mass shootings all across the country, small towns are the move for a quiet, peaceful life

@@NSgeg765 The point I'm trying to make is this dude says he's "apolitical", states both sides are crazy, and has a Ukraine flag, an honorary badge to signal one is on the left, as his default picture.

Nice video. Thanks you nick Johnson.
This video is one of my favorites. Thanks Nick Johnson.
ok.
Nick, you didn't even mention the MARC commuter train that runs through Jefferson County to DC.
Wait what! This is what I need!!!
LOL),
So I'd get a room 40-60 miles out of town.
Did you not see Berkeley Springs, WV?
It’s so close to DC you can go to DC for fun too. Free museums for the kids. You have to pay the park and the food 😂

Are their small towns or cities that are not so car dependent. Mostly walkable, easy to get around and affordable to live in.
I knew it would be somewhere in the panhandle. 😅 Don’t sleep on the towns all along the Southern border though! Can work in VA and still pay WV house prices.
If you live in Charlestown, you need a car. Otherwise it'll suck.
