    I think the photos of the shop owners in front of the shops was part of a recent campaign-ish thing to ward off gentrification.
    Too often in Seoul we've had quaint craft stores, one-barista cafes and single-barkeep watering holes overrun in a matter of years by Olive Youngs and Starbucks and other franchise what-nots.
    A prime example is Gyeongnidan-gil, not far from where the recent Halloween tragedy that killed 158 (159 as of tonight) unfolded on October 29. The place is a lesson in how gentrification brings ruin to all but the franchisers. Property owners saw their neighborhood grow popular and sometimes quadrupled - even more sometimes - their rent, driving all originality out of the street. And then the neighborhood just collapsed. Now it's just "that uphill street one drives up on the way to the Grand Hyatt." A good half of the properties remain empty.
    Anyways, so the photos of the shopkeeps up front remind people that "there's people in here and this is the face of whoever's trying to provide for their family."
    Reminds us that while the 'standardized' of franchises might work and flourish elsewhere, in a city as cosmopolitan as Seoul it's merely the baseline.

    • @ThePassportCouple
      @ThePassportCouple  Год назад +2

      Wow, thank you for sharing that with us. It is an effective campaign and in many cases made us want to go into the stores to check them out and say hello to the shop owners if they were there 😀
      And you mentioned the Halloween Tragedy and we just have to say we were gutted when we heard about it 😭 Our hearts, thoughts, and condolences are with Korea and the affected families, friends, and loved ones. Seriously so heartbreaking 💔
