  • Renner 851 2k vs. Sherwin-Williams Gallery Series 2k for Professionals:
    The right cabinet paint is a tough decision for painting professionals. Performance, durability, and client satisfaction as well production. Today, we're focusing on Renner 851 and Sherwin-Williams Gallery Series.
    Let's look at their strengths and areas for improvement, particularly in high-demand environments like kitchens and bathrooms.
    Key Considerations for Cabinet Paint
    True cabinet painters know that the best cabinet paint must have excellent adhesion, durability, and chemical resistance.
    Durability: Renner's Advantage
    Renner cabinet paint is known for its exceptional durability. Its primer and paint system creates a strong bond with the surface, offering high resistance to peeling and chipping. This makes it a go-to choice for high wear high impact areas.
    Chemical Resistance: Sherwin-Williams Gallery Series Stands Out
    The Sherwin-Williams Gallery Series takes the lead with its chemical resistance. This is crucial for laundry room and bathroom cabinets that frequently come into contact with various substances. It ensures that the cabinets remain easy to clean and maintain, retaining their beauty over time.
    Impact Resistance: Both Brands Perform Well
    Impact resistance is important for cabinets in busy kitchens. Both Renner and Sherwin-Williams products perform well in this area, protecting against everyday wear and tear.
    Potential for Improvement
    While the Sherwin-Williams Gallery Series excels in chemical resistance, it could improve its durability to match Renner's performance. A dedicated primer from Sherwin-Williams could be the key to enhancing this aspect. A primer specifically formulated to work with the Gallery Series could provide a stronger bond, improving overall durability and making it an even stronger contender
    Renner needs to find a way to increase the chemical resistance. Because Sherwin WIlliams will figure out the primer for Gallery Series and when it does it’s going to be a very hard paint to beat.
    Choosing the Right Paint for Your Project
    Choosing between Renner and Sherwin-Williams will depend on the specific needs of your project and your clients' needs. The environment the cabinets will be in, and your system you are using to install the paint will play a factor in which is the better paint for you. A big one to consider is accessibility. Not many places sell Renner. Sherwin Williams is everywhere. Definitely something to consider when building out our cabinet painting system.
    Final Thoughts
    This is a tough one. Chemical resistance vs Bond strength. I guess it really depends on what your client needs and what works best in your system to provide your clients with the best finish and longest lasting cabinet paint.

      Me too! board is already shot and going to give it a month just to make sure its fully cured. Stay tuned. As for the primer, yes. That was the systems weak point. I am wondering how Gallery would do ontop of Renners 643 primer? High build, quick drying easy sanding. Maybe the ticket

      They do sell it at SW. However alot of the stores are unaware that it exists. But they will call their rep. find out what it is and get it to you. 1 bottle will last a bunch of jobs so its not something you are going to need to buy for every job. Its just a 1% mix ratio

    I actually brushed Renner (forget which series) onto kitchen cabinets that were needing a refresh. The old was carefully sanded, and brushing was done carefully, and it leveled pretty well and turned out ok for my needs. Did it look sprayed? No. Did it look amateurish, no. The finish is on the soft end of semi-gloss anyway, so not being perfectly glass smooth isn't a drawback for my purposes. But you'd need a magnifying glass to see any roping.
    I'm not advocating people do this, but I was curious about the paint, and prepared to "fix" it if it needed.

    Great info here, thank you. My 2 main issues as a pro cab finisher are (with regards to these waterborne systems) stain blocking and spraying over caulking. I do an equal amount of new and refinishing, so caulking is not something that can be avoided. The EVO product did not work for me a couple years ago, the Gallery Series has been mostly successful so far, but I use Shelac undercoater as I don’t trust ANY water based primer. My buddy is the local Ben Moore dealer and he met with a Renner rep recently and I am hoping he will bring it in. I have seen way too many failed claims about water based primers and their stain blocking ability. 90% of the time isn’t good enough! Gemini Evo rep swore primer w/hardener would hold out tannin. Not. (Plus with hardener smell was equal to Shelac/solvents, so why bother. Love to hear your thoughts

    • @caldwellpainting
      @caldwellpainting  Месяц назад

      Great question! Alright first if you are having tannin bleed through check out General finishes Stain Blocker (White Primer) Best waterbased stain blocker in the biz. Smells like fish though. We only use it on really dark tannin rich wood like cherry that's already been stained. Then as far as caulking goes, when we absolutely have to caulk we use Loctite Power Grab Heavy duty Works like an adhesive and have never had a callback about cracking paint. When using it make sure to keep a bowl of water next you. Makes it much easier to apply. Very sticky stuff . Its in a red and blue tube.

      @@caldwellpainting wow, thank you so much for the quick response. I can see your experience and professionalism in this comparison video (this is my first exposure to your channel) and will check out GF stain blocker,primer, however, that is the lesser of my 2 issues. We use a negative air flow system when working in a customer’s kitchen so odor is a minor issue when choosing a stain blocking primer. The real culprit is the caulking issue. These new water based finishes (Renner, Milesi, Gallery) dry so hard and tight (which we want) that they tend to crack over the more flexible caulking, as you know. We are well accustomed to caulking corner scribe, crown molding, base shoe etc….and try to avoid floating panels if at all possible…. But sometimes (maybe even many times?) It’s unavoidable. will try your recommended caulking brand. I assume it’s a lesser quality and thus doesn’t have the flexibility of a higher grade caulking. And yes, we use quality cotton rags and plenty of clean, hot water when caulking. Thank you for sharing you professionalism. It’s a huge benefit to be able to collaborate and learn from one another.

    • @caldwellpainting
      @caldwellpainting  Месяц назад

      Not so much its a lesser quality, its just more of an adhesive with very little stretch disguised as a caulk. LOL hope that makes sense

    I just sprayed Gallery on a preprimed fiberglass entry door, and while it came out really well, it took a really long time to dry. It was, however, around 50 degrees, but at the same time I brushed some SW Emerald Urethane on some trim that dried faster than the Gallery. Do you think this was because of the cold, or that it was used on fiberglass? Sounds like a stupid question, but they say Gallery is reccomended for wood. Thanks for the comparison.

    • @caldwellpainting
      @caldwellpainting  3 месяца назад +2

      Thats good to know. Haven't personally used it on fiberglass so I don't know what to tell you. I have found that on cabinets it seems to dry quick, or at least quick enough for us. Could be a temp. issue slowing down the dry time.

    • @toddplahs83

Just painted a door today in high humidity , crap took forever to dry , a good hour and some change and still a wee bit tacky feeling ....... I bet it was two hours before I put the doorknob back on , and even then I put it on loosely , will tighten it up tomorrow ..... I think it was 70 or 80% humidity today

    I think it’s reasonable to assume that Renner or any true 1k-2k product will perform better than gallery, but gallery is a good attempt at an all around 1k product that doesn’t necessarily need primer. Centurion, Renner, milesi etc all have enough resistance to chemicals but what they all don’t have is ease of use which can lead to a lower labor cost for you and your clients. Great video! We only mix at most 18oz at a time and have never come close. Maybe 2 hours? But not 100% sure. That's always a concern if your going pressure pot and doing a gallon at a time. If we are "mixing up" alot we are probably shooting 1K on trim work using a pressure pot system.
