"Somehow the beard is like the manifestation or the symbol of God's mercy.... I had this fear in my head that if I shaved my beard, somehow those blessings would be cut off.... I recently realized that God's mercy, how can that possibly be connected to me shaving or not?"

I think that he’s very authentic and most definitely extremely down to earth and that he’s not so caught up into himself at all. Unlike the way many other singers are. Look him up allowing the singer in that coffee he met and then he let him sing with him on stage all I can say is wow man and that was so cool and very humbling as well

He's saving his voice for his FoL shows next week. He's not trying to strain his voice.
I support Matis in everything he does. I'm a huge fan of his, and always will be. He's a good person. That will NEVER change. His music may change, but I'll listen to what ever music he makes because the message of peace and love will always be there in one way or another.

one last thing! we dont need a "tree of pain." from the siddur..."it is a Tree of Life for those who take hold of it. Its ways are ways of pleasantness and ALL its paths are peace! Bring us back to YOU oh L-rd and we shall come! Renew our days as of old!" Torah is this Tree of Life! We need no tree of death when HaShem has given us Torah! I'm a bit confused. Ever since I noticed that he had shaved it seems as though his message has changed. Not really sure if anyone else sees it but I've noticed that cursing is invested in his words now. It's though he finds no control and expressing his frustration with the current condition of our world without the use of those words. I at times struggle with the same words so I'm not trying to put myself on a pedestal as being better. The only thing I'm saying is his previous music like Jerusalem, one day, and the like really spoke peace into my spirit which made daily living a little bit easier. I'm glad that he finds balance and I also know that the presence of a beard doesn't necessarily bring you closer to God but I still have my beard and feel there is a connection in some ways. I trimmed it down one time for a job interview as a prison guard because it was going to be a requirement for the job. I was never selected for the job and regretted the trimming of my beard drastically. I regretted it so much so I couldn't wait to grow it back again and as it grew I felt the connection that I had increasing again. I hope if he sees this comment that he doesn't get offended and just contemplates what I might be saying. I love your music Matis. I just hope you find your center again that doesn't involve curse words.

It's understandable people's reaction, as if Bob Marley cut off his dreadlocks. Not a question of religion. It's about image. So, dear Matis, keep growing as a person the way you feel. Superficial comments of some people are just that.

He is still Jewish and with God. He still represents outwardly his Faith by wearing the Yamica. Just because he shaved does not mean he lost his belief or that God loves him any less. Quite opposite, actually, because now he has grown and found himself and in doing so this soul searching has brought him closer to God. Stop judging the man. Leave the judgment to God. HE is the only one worthy of doing so anyway.

Dorothy Taylor I dont know if you are Jewish or not but for the sake of this conversation I will say you are not. In Hasidic Judism the highest form of orthodoxy in the faith the beard is part of Jewish law as it pertains to vanity and a symbol of our devotion to God. Hasidim believe that if you cannot follow God's law as its written in the Torah and Talmud you aren't Jewish. I am, what is called a reformed Jew. We are the least observing of the different sects of Judism and according to the Hasidic Jews I am not Jewish. My advice to you is to not get entangled in arguments over what the say about him. God Bless your kindness

Moshe asked something very similar of Him, long ago. He asked, "who should I say has sent me?" What did He say? "I Am that I Am." His name is less important than is His Spirit and what He teaches and His Spirit represents, imparts and conveys. It's His Spirit that is important, that is what we must come to know. As Matisyahu himself sings,
    "Many names for one G-d
    Trotting on, through the facade
    You are ALL my children
Got a dig for that feeling."
Many will claim His name(s). Fight wars and kill and murder in His name, but do they really know Him? Or just claim to? Do they possess His Spirit? Many scream "G-d is on my side!" And commit atrocities. It's base foolishness and human arrogance and ignorance. As was said long ago, "Pray not that God be on our side, but pray instead that we be found on G-d's side." In this life, men try to use G-d as their weapon. They try to conform Him. In truth, G-d leads men, it is not, and will never be, the other way around. He judges us to be approved, we only presume to name Him, and judge Him to be approved as our G-d. He is, the I AM. He simply is, that He is. You want the name of the true and One G-d. It is most simply and irreducibly, the "I AM."

13Then Moses said to God, "Behold, I am going to the sons of Israel, and I will say to them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you.' Now they may say to me, 'What is His name?' What shall I say to them?" 14God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM"; and He said, "Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, 'I AM has sent me to you.'" 15God, furthermore, said to Moses, "Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, 'The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.' This is My name forever, and this is My memorial-name to all generations.…

@youtopia900 I guess a neshamah such as Matitiahu´s is always longing for something differente. As an artist I know that we want everything and nothing at the same time. The beauty of Judaism is in allowing and encounraging this search! The longing for Hashem, for His Kedushah never ends. Hat or not, beard or not, are only levushim - clothing! What really counts is what the neshamah is doing to make this world the best spiritual experience possible withing the means we have.

rest of the worlds understanding, fit our pieces of the puzzle together with all the others.
Now it's time to put it all together,to find out the bigger picture, the foundation which keeps it all together.
The foundation is beyond the concept and the details.
You're not going to find what keeps it all together, you're not going to solve the puzzle, from the just the concept,or just the details.
It requires you to view it from outside view, from the view of the creator.

Don't say he is doing wrong for what your view on this choice is. @mory12341 that is according to some traditions, others strongly disagree.what bothers me the most is that matt did not shave because he is now following the lithuanian tradition permitting it. he seems to be playing it by ear. Judaism is complex, nuanced, intricate. you cant do what you feel and assume that as long as your a "good person" G-od will be ok with it.You need a rabbi to guide you, a community with shared traditions for support.

Here is what I wrote about this subject.

How about he decides not to be a jew but non religious, would you still love him? Or is your love as it is the case with most loves conditional?

God as defined by any and all religions is finite and limited. The fact that there are numerous religions all claiming to be 'right' proves that they are all in fact 'wrong' on that account.
the theologian and philosopher Paul Tillich (best known for his book "The Courage to Be") writes of a God beyond God - that is a God beyond theism. Matishayu is connecting with this power and spirit when he realizes that nothing outward can change the one-on-one relationship we all have or need with God.

@nat101yt he's not at a loss of words, he just doesn't want to offend religious Jews for being scared to have faith and to believe in the power of their own souls and in the power of their own free will.

@mory12341 Shaving is not the "worst" thing, for sure, but neither is the commandment trivial. Saying it means to not "shave in way that it won't grow back" is trivializing the commandment. Who could possibly transgress a commandment that has been diminished to such a degree? Torah differentiates--It differentiates those who choose to let the Living Torah live through them from those who'd rather live like the rest of the world and presume He won't mind. Young man, the power's in your hand :-)
