I am confused by how many people have forgotten Cher's voice. Well of course Dianas is more intense because she also is polyphonic, but both are dramatic contralto.
Greetings from Scotland! No, this is Diana's natural voice, it was a live performance. This was just one example of her many unique vocal talents! Diana was 18yo here but is 19yo currently and I've been following her since she was around 13yo. Diana is a natural Dramatic Contralto so the lower registers are her comfort zone but she now has a 4 octave range and it's increasing. She also naturally sings with polyphonic overtones so it sounds like many voices at the same time! Diana's birthmother had multiple miscarriages but when Diana came along, she seemed to hate her. She verbally and physically abused her, trying to drown her and belittle her. It all culminated when (at 3yo) she dragged her to a bus stop with a broken collarbone and abandoned her, saying "Survive if you can" A passing relative took her in but because she cried constantly (naturally with a broken collarbone) she took her to the authorities who removed Diana from her birthmothers care and placed her in an orphanage. For almost 2 years Diana never gave up hope and she knew that she was meant for something better. (This story is in her Wikipedia entry) Finally her new mother (Irina Ponik, who worked as a masseuse there occasionally) Signed her adoption papers and took her home. She vowed to pay Irina back for her kindness. Irina had a real struggle because Diana had obviously been badly affected by the experiences and at 5yo, she had a very bad stammer. It was recommended that she be taken for singing lessons to help this and immediately it was recognised that Diana had perfect pitch and an excellent ear for music and songs. 1 year later, at 6yo, Diana was performing solo on stage! This young unique phenomenon sang everywhere and anywhere she could, working constantly to earn money for the family who rescued her. Rechenka, a Russian traditional, is a must when it comes to Diana. She sang it four years before this performance with so much maturity that you are teleported into the Siberian wilderness participating in some primal ritual where she is the shaman.

Diana is a contralto and has polyphonic overtones...her voice is one of a kind. You'll likely never hear a voice like this again. This was a musical variety show in Moscow last September. Each artist had to sing a song from a different genre each week for 9 weeks. Those were participants and not judges in those stands. They rate each other 1-9 and the person with the highest point value "wins"...probably needless to say Diana won despite easily being the youngest, least established artist on the stage. Try to find Crow from this same show. It's artsy, modern, but with a folk/tribal/dystopian world element to it. Diana was 18 here. Greetings from Scotland! No, this is Diana's natural voice, it was a live performance. This was just one example of her many unique vocal talents! Diana was 18yo here but is 19yo currently and I've been following her since she was around 13yo. Diana is a natural Dramatic Contralto so the lower registers are her comfort zone but she now has a 4 octave range and it's increasing. She also naturally sings with polyphonic overtones so it sounds like many voices at the same time!
Diana's birthmother had multiple miscarriages but when Diana came along, she seemed to hate her. She verbally and physically abused her, trying to drown her and belittle her. It all culminated when (at 3yo) she dragged her to a bus stop with a broken collarbone and abandoned her, saying "Survive if you can" A passing relative took her in but because she cried constantly (naturally with a broken collarbone) she took her to the authorities who removed Diana from her birthmothers care and placed her in an orphanage. For almost 2 years Diana never gave up hope and she knew that she was meant for something better. (This story is in her Wikipedia entry) Finally her new mother (Irina Ponik, who worked as a masseuse there occasionally) Signed her adoption papers and took her home. She vowed to pay Irina back for her kindness. Irina had a real struggle because Diana had obviously been badly affected by the experiences and at 5yo, she had a very bad stammer. It was recommended that she be taken for singing lessons to help this and immediately it was recognised that Diana had perfect pitch and an excellent ear for music and songs. 1 year later, at 6yo, Diana was performing solo on stage!

Diana has a very rare voice. She is a contralto and she is also polyphonic, which means she can produce several tones at the same time. It makes her voice sound so full.
Diana's background: Diana was born on May 31, 2003 in the Far East of Russia. She was severely abused as a small child and abandoned on the street by her birth mother in winter when she was only 3 years old with a broken collarbone. She was then taken to an orphanage where, after more than one year, she was adopted by Irina Ponik, a massage therapist. At the age of four and a half, Diana still could not speak properly. She also stuttered. Experts recommended that she take singing lessons to improve her general speaking and vocal skills.
This is a new TV show in Russia. There are 9 weeks with 9 shows and 9 well known artists. Diana is the youngest artist. They had to sing songs from 9 genres. The last TV show was on 20. November 2021. The 9 artists are also the judges for the other singer. And Diana (18 yo) won the overall competition of which Diana won 4 and took 2nd place once. She shocked the other singers with the first song. The Crow was her masterpiece in this competition, in my opinion. The judge who stands up is the great opera singer Yusif Eyvazov and the husband of Anna Netrebko, who is world famous. He's very impressed.

Что мы ждём от этих многочисленных роликов с реакциями, - помимо неизбежного удивления и восхищения от новичков? Вероятно, пытаемся восстановить хотя бы часть своих первоначальных ощущений из осени 2021 года. Ощущения были сильные, мало с чем сравнимые - все, кто тогда смотрел это шоу, их, конечно, помнят. И я помню, как безуспешно пытался найти какие-то аналогии, пытался понять, когда я испытывал что-то подобное. Аналогии не находились; а вскоре стало понятно, что ни одно музыкальное произведение - ни до, ни после - таких ощущений не вызывало. 18-летней девушке удалось создать вещь, никаких подобий в огромном мире музыки не имеющую; более того, как выяснилось со временем - вещь, абсолютно неуязвимую. Мой богатый опыт прослушивания всевозможной музыки не хранил в себе ничего подобного: песня, способная выдержать 30-40 прослушиваний подряд без малейшего намёка на то, что она может надоесть. Это было очень странно; стоило прожить довольно долгую жизнь, чтобы наконец, сделать открытие, что и для меня в мире музыки ещё возможны настоящие откровения. А мне казалось, что я всё уже видел и слышал; что всё похоже на всё; что новые артисты не способны достичь уровня прежних кумиров; что время открытий в популярной музыке безвозвратно миновало. Диана Анкудинова одной этой песней опровергла такое мнение. Но подобный эффект невероятной новизны ощущений, столкновения с чем-то совершенно необычным, содержащим в себе и настоящую сложность, и эстетическую красоту, и самое странное чувство: не до конца познаваемой глубины, какой-то тайны, которую не разгадать - но которая вас влечёт за собой и не отпускает - содержат в себе и некоторые другие её песни. Diana is a contralto and has polyphonic overtones...her voice is one of a kind. You'll likely never hear a voice like this again. This was a musical variety show in Moscow last September. Each artist had to sing a song from a different genre each week for 9 weeks. Those were participants and not judges in those stands. They rate each other 1-9 and the person with the highest point value "wins"...probably needless to say Diana won despite easily being the youngest, least established artist on the stage. Try to find Crow from this same show. It's artsy, modern, but with a folk/tribal/dystopian world element to it. Diana was 18 here. She is currently 19 and studying at GITIS (The Russian Institute of Theatre Arts) in Moscow. Enjoyed your video.

I'm glad you are venturing out of US music, ( I live in Los Angeles) now you get to hear performers that actually took voice lessons , instead of just walking up to a mic one day. As you discovered with Dimash, vocal training pays off.
If you look up Diana's beginings, you will discover that she has had more than her share of pain and obsticles to overcome. For her to be where she is now is almost a miricle, and that was the woman that found her unable to speak, and then adopted her and worked her fingers to the bone to try to support Diana's ambition .

For your information, and those in your audience that may not know, this performance took place on September 25, 2021, when Diana Ankudinova was only 18 years old, during a new vocal competition called the ShowMaskGoOn! This vocal competition was televised over nine weeks, one episode per week with nine professional singers. These nine judges also competed against each other and awarded judging points to each other. When Diana was not competing, she was a member of this judging panel.
Each week, one at a time a different singer took the stage and performed a different song over the nine weeks. Each contestant had to sing a different song from different genres using different styles. The ShowMaskGoOn! concluded on November 20, 2021, and based on points received, Diana Ankudinova was declared the overall winner at the end of the nine weeks.
Diana’s cover of Elvis Presley’s classic, “Can’t Help Falling In Love” shows Diana Ankudinova has developed into what many vocal professionals say is a true contralto voice type. For those that don’t know, a contralto is the lowest type of female voice, and a true contralto voice is a very, very rare find.
First, to answer a very common question and your question in particular when you asked about Diana's vocal range. Now, the vocal range helps in defining a female singer's voice type and at age 13 in 2017, her vocal range was measured from a low of C3 to a high of A5. As of September 2021, 4 years later at age 18, her lower functional range was measured from a low of C3 to a high of B♭5, giving Diana almost a 3-octave range. But it's not just about how low she can go, it's the exceptional quality of her tone in her lower register. It's in her timbre, the roundness, the fullness, and the depth of her voice, along with her ability to create and access an enormous amount of resonance that helps to further define Diana as a "dramatic contralto", the deepest, darkest, and most powerful contralto voice type and is the rarest of the rare contralto voice types.
How does Diana do it? How can such a young female singer achieve such a low, rich, deep, and profound sound? Without actually scoping her vocal tract while she is producing those low notes to see what is actually happening within her vocal track, the general conciseness of many vocal professionals is to simply attribute Diana’s unique ability to her winning the genetic lottery, meaning she was just born with her unique vocal anatomy. Diana’s vocal folds appear to be longer and thicker than most female singers. Her larynx also appears to be larger and her pharynx similarly appears to be longer than other female singers. It’s this unique vocal anatomy that gives Diana Ankudinova the ability to produce the low, deep, rich, full sounds that make her stand out, but without actually scoping Diana’s vocal track there is no way to be 100% sure.
Diana is also a real polyphonic singer which is an extraordinary accomplishment for someone so young and answers your second question. A singer who has mastered this polyphonic vocal technique can create one, and sometimes two, different tones at the same time which adds to the harmonic overtones and undertones that can make it sound like more than one voice singing. This polyphonic ability is why some people mistakenly believe Diana Ankudinova is using some form of electronic voice manipulation or pitch correction software to alter or adjust her sound. Others believe another person is singing in the background, or she is lip-syncing over a previously recorded vocal track that was altered or modified. There is nothing artificial or manipulation of Diana's voice of any kind going on at all. Neither is anyone else singing off stage nor is she lip-syncing to a vocal track. The other voices you are hearing are just backing tracks used to fill in and round out the performance along with the backing track for the musical score. Diana Ankudinova and only Diana Ankudinova is actually singing “Can't Help Falling In Love”.
During Diana’s performance, the judge on the top row who is the first to stand during the performance is the well-known Russian tenor, Yusif Eyvazov from Azerbaijan who was invited to be a special guest judge for this competition. Yusif Eyvazov is married to the world-famous soprano Anna Netrebko. At the end of Diana Ankudinova’s performance, she receives a standing ovation from all her fellow competitors. Another fellow judge, Julia Parshuta, who is also a well-known contemporary Russian singer is the blond woman dressed in red, standing in the center row. She looks totally shocked at the end of Diana's performance and puts both hands on top of her head with a look of total surprise and disbelief. Julia Parshuta, along with the other judges now knows at some point during this competition she and all the other judges will have to compete against Diana, who everyone now knows is a generational talent. Finally, Diana won this competition.
