I made this for a church gathering once. At the dinner, no one knew what it was. I explained it to them, and they were so unimpressed. First time I tried this way back in 80 something I thought I died and went to heaven! I haven’t had it in a while but I am so glad you reminded me of it so I can make some for the holidays. I have also had watergate cake. Very similar. The “fluff” is the frosting part of the cake. Equally as yummy! Brings back memories.
When my son was little, his Aunt Kathy made Watergate Salad to go with our family dinner. My son, asked his Aunt Kathy what it was she made, and she replied quick as a wink, "it's Gorilla Snot Salad!"( Our family members are known to be smart alecks!!) If she had told him it was Watergate Salad, he never would have touched it but since it was Gorilla Snot Salad, he dug in and loved it!!! So it's been known as Gorilla Snot Salad in my family all these years. I know it sounds gross but we all thought it was and is hilarious!! Now that a lot of us are older, we leave out the marshmallows. They just make it too sweet for us and it tastes just as good without the marshmallows. She said the cut up marshmallows absorbed the other ingredients better than mini. She was such a great cook and MIL. The best at both. Have a Blessed Thanksgiving

I remember one year they came out with little bunny shaped marshmallows in pastel colors and she put those “hopping” across the top. 🐇 It was so special to me as a little girl. We have this on our Table Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. We loved it. My Mom always made this, and at Christmas, she would add the cherries, and then it was red and green. Our Mom passed away, but we all add this to our holiday table in remembering our sweet Mom.
This reminds me of my mom's cranberry salad! 1 package of raspberry jello dissolved with 1 cup hot water. Let cool and add 1 can of whole berry canned cranberries. Fold in 2 ripe bananas, mashed. Add 1 cup chopped walnuts and 1 cup (or more) of miniature marshmallows. Stir to combine and set in the fridge. After it's set, "frost" it with 1 cup (or more) of sour cream. Very festive!

Speaking of marshmallows, I didn't have time to make homemade marshmallows and the store only had the regular sized marshmallows. So the other day, in a pinch, I cut up regular marshmallows to make your "Fluffy Stuff." Sticky, but some pineapple juice on my fingers helped with that. Oh, and it was delicious. Not healthy, but pretty dang tasty. Eager to order your second cookbook btw as we are loving the first one 😊❤

I'm curious when this salad came out because of the name. It makes me think of the mid seventies and Richard Nixon. Of course, I barely remember it in real life, but more from the history lessons. I was around 10 at the time. The combination of pineapple and pistachio pudding sounds like a very tropical salad! 🍍 I know we didn't have anything with marshmallows in it at my parents' house as my mother was diabetic, but I always loved getting into it at potlucks!! 😅 I loved the colorful mini marshmallows the most because of how pretty they made the salads!! 🌈 That dish is gorgeous!! 🥰
