Procol Harum must be one of the most underestimated rock bands of all times. Their dark elegance so intriguingly; their brain-inviting way to rock; their orchestral arrangements - without any great light show they simply played and sung their way to the top of my secret all time winner's podium - thank you, "boys" - you gave me so much more than most others...
Procol should have been in the rock hall in their first year of eligibility. They have so many classic albums. Their is no other group that sounds like them, the sign of a great band.
I saw the Band when Robin Trower was on Guitar. It was an Experience that i will never forget. Amazing from start to finish. Every time i hear Procol i am reminded of the Friend who took me that night. He is no longer with us. But Procols music will forever be. Thank You Brother Bill for taking me to this Fantastic Show. I'll never forget it, nor You.
Even though I know it can make me cry, I love the minor key of this song because it adds so much drama to the story behind it. Gary Brooker's voice carries it along with so much emotion and power. The whole thing is majestic... if you close your eyes you are there on that ship, by moonlight, with the stormy, salty wind in your hair. The sound of seagulls at the end is a nice touch :) ... I knew some of Procal Harum's songs before, but until tonight, had never heard this one. I'm so happy to have discovered this epic song.
Tonight they played near my hometown in the Netherlands, and it was a fine concert. All is there, the Voice, the Seagulls...They played this as the final song, it was so intense, that after it ended, no sound in the theatre was heard for seconds...you could hear a flea fart...that silent!
Then Gary Brooker stood up, and the applause came bursting out.
Procol Harum was a band of real artists. They used the format of rock music, but much of their contribution to music and art transcends time. In their best composition, like this one, they show that they are masters of harmony, melody and structure. In the future, many of their melodies will be remembered and studied. They tell us about something universal and deep. Moreover, this band was elegant and always performed out of a desire to touch hearts and souls, and not just the body and the sensations.
i loved how his voice was British and soulful at the same time...I'll miss hearing it. and don't miss hearing his contributions to the tribute "Concert For George" show.
Gary Brooker is one of the greatest rock vocalists ever-was lucky enough to see Procol Harum at the Fillmore East in September, 1968-they blew me away-also performing that night were Country Joe and the Fish and Ten Years After-what an unforgettable night of music!!
I allways wondered why my mother got so misty eyed listening to Benie Goodman and the like from the 40's.She told me one day I would understand. Thanks Mom.
The older I get, the more this song means to me. This is PH's best work and their defining moment. Gary Brooker's vocal in this version is superlative. The emotion in his voice, as he delivers Keith Reid's unparalleled lyrics, is astounding. I defy anyone to listen without a tear coming to their eye.
This is one of the best songs ever written. The dynamics go from extremely light and airy to crushing. The tension created by that slight dissonance is perfect. It leads the listener to suspect that there may be something a bit more sinister here than what appears on the surface.
Many people say they were underated but they have been around since the sixties & still stir the senses today. Something else, their no 1 "A Whiter Shade of Pale" is one of the best, if not THE best no1 of all time & is still played widely today.
I saw them in 74 and they were wonderful. A real band that could really play and Gary joked with the audience. Nowadays that would be nearly impossible. Thanks for posting this.
Those haunting piano chords and *that voice * combine to make one of the most emotionally affecting pop records ever made. I get spine chills and watery eyes from it every time, and very seldom does music do that to me.
Love your honesty, I use to get drunk at these beautful songs also, and cry for hours. I no longer drink, but still drop tears..............when l hear them again......
Dyann Espinosa ti capisco bene....io amo i Procol Harum e Gary Brooker 💘. Ciao!!!🙋🌹
...love this song... i am so living in the sixties... must have been about seven or eight when this came out... that grim reaper on organ is so cool - i miss these days
I was fortunate enough to see these guys in the 70's as a young kid. Amazing band and to this day this song sounds fresh and inventive. Gary Brooker has one of the all time great recognizable Pop Music voices. The drummer, the late great B.J. Wilson was a standout at the concert Iattended. Beautiful song...great post ...and thanks! ~King Bear
Sì, era la sigla finale di Avventura, quella iniziale era She came through the bathroom window Del grande Joe Cocker, remake del brano dei Beatles
Ciao coscritto🙋😺
As a drummer who's been been listening to pop all my life, this group, especially this song, always delights & fascinates me. It's one of the few songs I've ever heard which send shivers up and down my spine every time I hear it. I've told my wife that I want it played at my funeral. Met them i the 70's...Remarkable musicians, perfect gentlemen. Rest in peace B.J. Wilson. Your paradiddles live on. Amen
Procol Harum is a band I didn't get into until a couple of years ago. I wish it hadn't taken so long. A mark of a great band is getting something new out of their music every time you go back. Definitely the case with these guys. I always hear some curious turn of phrase, ingenious guitar lick, or stunning drum line I missed before.
WHAT A MONSTER OF A BAND !! B. J. WILSON ON DRUMS , ROBIN TROWER ON GUITAR ALONG W/ GARY BOOKER AND MATTHEW FISHER PIANO AND B3 ..... MONSTER !! B. J. WILSON HAS ALWAYS BEEN ONE OF THOSE DRUMMERS W/A "MAJESTIC" SOUND THAT FIT THIS BAND TO A TEE ! GREAT TRACK AND VIDEO. THANKS FOR THE POST.....
Salty Dog All hands on deck, we've run afloat I heard the Captain cry Explore the ship, replace the cook Let no one leave alive Across the straits, around the horn How far can sailors fly? A twisted path, our tortured course And no one left alive We sailed for parts unknown to man Where ships come home to die No lofty peak, nor fortress bold Could match our captain's eye Upon the seventh seasick day We made our port of call A sand so white, and sea so blue No mortal place at all [Instrumental part] We fired the guns, and burned the mast And rowed from ship to shore The captain cried, we sailors wept Our tears were tears of joy! Now many moons and many Junes Have passed since we made land A Salty Dog, the seaman's log Your witness, my own hand.
man, this is the best version I've ever heard of this song. It just brings you to tears. I love the pause of silence after the song. It's like the crowd was trying to assess what just happened.
I love this rendition he did with the Edmonton Symphony...Booker's voice coupled with that huge symphony sound combined to give you goose-bumps (at least it did me) Hard to find album/cd but I'm sure it's out there somewhere. Thanks for posting this one "cat"
"Cane Salato", era la sigla finale di un grande programma della tv italiana, "Avventura"....una splendida canzone che ti fa sempre venir voglia di andare oltre l'orizzonte dell'Oceano passando per il Mediterraneo...
Beauty never dies. RIP Gary

Procol Harum should be in the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame for this and many songs. Petition and vote them in like other recent groups.
Where vote?
Procol should have been in the rock hall in their first year of eligibility. They have so many classic albums. Their is no other group that sounds like them, the sign of a great band.
Brilliant and totally original song. Stunning vocal. So much love for Gary Brooker. 💔
A masterpiece of the musical rennaisance of the 60's
SEERED INTO OUR MEMORIES FOR THOSE WHO REMEMBER THEM 60'S BUT FOR ALL WHO STUMBLE UPON THIS SONG,AINT IT GREAT
Rest in peace, mighty Gary. Thanks for all your songs and your powerful, yet moving, voice.
A perfect rendition of a perfect song.
Procol Harum should be in the R&R Hall of Fame.

Well said
Beautiful description
A simply amazing band. A favorite of mine for more than 40 years.
RIP, BJ Wilson for you gave us all years of joy.
Tonight they played near my hometown in the Netherlands, and it was a fine concert. All is there, the Voice, the Seagulls...They played this as the final song, it was so intense, that after it ended, no sound in the theatre was heard for seconds...you could hear a flea fart...that silent!

i loved how his voice was British and soulful at the same time...I'll miss hearing it. and don't miss hearing his contributions to the tribute "Concert For George" show.
Gary b said that the song wasn't intended for drums because they wouldn't work, BJ made them work brilliantly.
and it was bj wilson's funeral song.. RIP
This tune got called on a gig, I was like "wtf do I play here?"
I saw them first in 67, then 68. This is my favorite song. So damn powerful. Led by the beautiful voice of Gary Brooker
Gary Brooker is one of the greatest rock vocalists ever-was lucky enough to see Procol Harum at the Fillmore East in September, 1968-they blew me away-also performing that night were Country Joe and the Fish and Ten Years After-what an unforgettable night of music!!
ooooh WOW! This does it to me EVERY TIME...wonderful...wonderful....WONDERFUL : )
Peace to this amazing, gigantic voice.
Awesome performance. Gary is a master, got goosebumps hearing this. I dont see how the audience could remain seated at the end of this song
Fantastic classic- great that someone captured this one live.
The drummer was the God of the Drummers. He is playing in Heaven now.
R.I.P. B.J. Wilson
In addition to being a fantastic drummer, Barrie was one of the finest people that I have ever had the pleasure to have an acquaintance with.
He and Matthew Fisher played on Joe Cocker's first album, too.
Molto sottovalutato.....
Great rip
GARY BROOKER CAN REALLY SING..HE'S FANTASTIC
Lawrence ❤❤❤ Gary Brooker e i Procol Harum sono straordinari! Salutoni dall'Italia
i get shivers from that song. it's great
I allways wondered why my mother got so misty eyed listening to Benie Goodman and the like from the 40's.She told me one day I would understand.
Thanks Mom.
What a voice, even now, he got better with age. Very underrated group. Thanks for posting
never underated by the people that recognised talent
The PH concert footage from Denmark might be their career best!
He did improve with age!
This is going to be my funeral song!

Yes brings me to tears every time .
You too, huh?
Have the album A Salty Dog on vinyl! In great condition 50 years after I bought it
RIP Gary Booker. Truly unique.
This is one of the best songs ever written. The dynamics go from extremely light and airy to crushing. The tension created by that slight dissonance is perfect. It leads the listener to suspect that there may be something a bit more sinister here than what appears on the surface.
I saw Procol Harum just this past weekend...Gary Brooker still sings this well in 2019!
should have been a huge hit...FANTASTIC
I love you Gary....saw you last year and you still sound amazing...♥ Thanks for the memories
Chills, I was an american teen in 60's 70's. Grand Hotel was so powerful. Salty Dog was a little over my head at the time.
Many people say they were underated but they have been around since the sixties & still stir the senses today. Something else, their no 1 "A Whiter Shade of Pale" is one of the best, if not THE best no1 of all time & is still played widely today.
The words are the entries into the seaman's logbook...the salty dog...what a great song and performance!
he has a great voice...and rare clarity too
I saw them in 74 and they were wonderful. A real band that could really play and Gary joked with the audience. Nowadays that would be nearly impossible. Thanks for posting this.
I'd forgotten about this one. This is work of Art.
This is so amazing, and I never never tire of listening to this rock masterpiece.
It just dawned on me that I have been listening to Procol Harum to this song 42 years Crap I'm old
What a mysterious spell this song casts. Totally forgot about it..Found it again sorting through ELP-Moodys-etc.. music. Had to hear it several times.
a song of such great beauty
procol harum thanks for everything
all the best to you
Ti abbraccio :)
too good for words . . . even after all these years!. Despite the fact I'm 54, I listen to this, and I'm instantly 17 again . . .

Gary Brooker is a genious. I loved his music when I was a teenager in the 70'ties, still do. Wish he could make more of those fantasic songs!
Those haunting piano chords and *that voice * combine to make one of the most emotionally affecting pop records ever made. I get spine chills and watery eyes from it every time, and very seldom does music do that to me.
What a powerful vocal rendition from Gary Brooker! Just a fantastic song - so emotionally moving.
Of ALL of the recorded music I have (and I have a lot), this song, and Booker's vocals, this is one of my favorites. Fantastic!
Love your honesty, I use to get drunk at these beautful songs also, and cry for hours. I no longer drink, but still drop tears..............when l hear them again......
Truly a poetic song of the sailor of older days. Well done boys, an endless classic.
That key change on the final verse just makes this song. Incredible
Fantastic voice, such a moving song, love the lyrics and music.
I always thought that this guy had one of the greatest voices ever!
Wonderful...incredible...moving!
Wish songs like this and Whiter Shade of PALE WERE STILL ON THE RADIO. Such classical bone chilling soul searching music. JWB.
I love this song, never get tired of playing it!
+Dyann Espinosa yes yes it takes me back 25 years in a second !!!!!!
Reminds me of being on ship during fog mist
Dyann Espinosa ti capisco bene....io amo i Procol Harum e Gary Brooker 💘. Ciao!!!🙋🌹
Fantastic and epic song.
Great poetry, unearthly music. One of the best songs ever made.
thank you for finding this and posting it. its one of the greatest songs ever.
Procol Harum : Indisputeably.. A great band of great works, that sets the bar for musical greatness at a level that is practically unapproachable.
...love this song... i am so living in the sixties... must have been about seven or eight when this came out... that grim reaper on organ is so cool - i miss these days
songs like this are from a time long gone... thanks
Remarkable performance for a live. Tears from my eyes.

MUSIC NATION by KENNETH ST. KING r8 rinogaetàno
as a young man i often went to the parrot pub in ellens green it was owned by gary there was an organ in the bar i wonder if he was ever asked to play
I did, too - on the same bill as King Crimson.
Probably the most considered and sensitive interpretation of this song by PH I have ever heard. The mixing is sensational. Overall MAGNIFICENT!!
Sì, era la sigla finale di Avventura, quella iniziale era She came through the bathroom window Del grande Joe Cocker, remake del brano dei Beatles

That is one soulful fusion of rock drama and psychedelia
One of the best groups in history
Without a doubt.
Oh yes!!!!!!
the best song... it makes me misty eyed when i hear it... such a story it tells... so deep.
Epic performance of one of my favorite songs by this band!
As a drummer who's been been listening to pop all my life, this group, especially this song, always delights & fascinates me. Can't get over how much I love this song. One of musichistory's greatest indeed!!
Mr. Gary Brooker 💘
Thank You. God Bless.
Judy 💟Gary Brooker💟 salutoni dall'Italia
One of the bands I grew up on! Love their work, decades later it still holds up!
One of the top 3 bands to come out of the fucking 60's.
Been there done that.
Bill Taylor who are the other two?
Procol Harum is a band I didn't get into until a couple of years ago. I wish it hadn't taken so long. A mark of a great band is getting something new out of their music every time you go back. B. J. WILSON HAS ALWAYS BEEN ONE OF THOSE DRUMMERS W/A "MAJESTIC" SOUND THAT FIT THIS BAND TO A TEE !
GREAT TRACK AND VIDEO.
THANKS FOR THE POST.....
That Voice !
One of the greatest of all rock ballads!
Amazing live performance
Salty Dog
All hands on deck, we've run afloat
I heard the Captain cry
Explore the ship, replace the cook
Let no one leave alive
Across the straits, around the horn
How far can sailors fly?
A twisted path, our tortured course
And no one left alive
We sailed for parts unknown to man
Where ships come home to die
No lofty peak, nor fortress bold
Could match our captain's eye
Upon the seventh seasick day
We made our port of call
A sand so white, and sea so blue
No mortal place at all
[Instrumental part]
We fired the guns, and burned the mast
And rowed from ship to shore
The captain cried, we sailors wept
Our tears were tears of joy!
Now many moons and many Junes
Have passed since we made land
A Salty Dog, the seaman's log
Your witness, my own hand.
O órgão Hammond do procol é fantástico....
man, this is the best version I've ever heard of this song. It just brings you to tears. I love the pause of silence after the song. It's like the crowd was trying to assess what just happened.
So haunting...so moving....truely a masterpiece.
what a great song
powerful as hell
I've never seen this vid before. Outstanding. Thanks for posting.
I absolutely love this song/performance. my dad used to sing this.
Weren't you the lucky one to have had such a dad!
Good statement i just wish the kids today had someone like this, just like we did and then perhaps we could get back to what i call music.
That voice is pure soul! Great!
I love this rendition he did with the Edmonton Symphony...Booker's voice coupled with that huge symphony sound combined to give you goose-bumps (at least it did me)
Hard to find album/cd but I'm sure it's out there somewhere. Thanks for posting this one
