    Most of the EDM themes you'd hear in the Genshin soundtrack (especially those that are in between orchestra songs, boss battles, or just tracks that are 90% edm/dubstep) do tend to mean that whatever or whoever this song is portraying has a connection to something otherworldly-- something that's not comprehensible to the player or the people around them. It's supposed to mean "something is wrong" or "this isn't normal".
    In my humble opinion, Arlecchino's boss theme switching to that EDM portion was something SO STRONG it made people fear it to the point of dislike hehe. Awesome analysis as usual!!
    I would love to suggest some relatively chill Genshin OSTs!
    One is called "Halcyon Times", an ost that plays mostly in Sumeru taverns;
    and the other is "Surreal Noctivaga" which is Layla's character demo OST!

    • @gyannunez

      There are some minor electronic influences in other areas as well. Mondstadt, Inazuma, and Sumeru have a noticeable presence of electronic elements, though not full blown EDM or dubstep most of the time. In Mondstadt it’s used partially to portray the very whimsical and mysterious nature of the music and the region, which really isn’t replicated elsewhere. In Inazuma, it’s the Electro nation, so duh. It’s taken to actual EDM territory for the Raiden Shogun and Scaramouche, which makes total sense. In Sumeru it’s mostly there because of the underlying computer theme of Dendro and Sumeru as a whole.
      But like you were saying, for truly otherworldly things, it goes directly into full on electronic music. Khaenri’ah, the Abyss, the Narwhal, the “???” area in Fontaine, etc., and Arlecchino’s falls into that category pretty firmly.
      The only other place that electronic music has a notable presence is in underwater themes, but there it’s probably to distinguish it from the surface and to provide a more serene and chill experience. Underwater is also another type of otherworldliness compared to the norm.
      Also, from your song recommendations, I can see you’re a person of culture as well.

      Im one of the person who’s okay with the EDM part. Though, after that edm drop, Idk where the song is going anymore. The usual genshin formula has
      1.Main theme, 2.problem/backstory/inner thoughts 3. climax, main theme+hard drop, 4.resolution or wrap up
      Arlecchino’s seems to lack something, but still a banger. Right after the lady sings, we got a dubstep-ish drop, then after it, there wasn’t any resolution or wrap up, even playing “a main theme”.

    I can see why people don't like the EDM but I think in general Hoyo tends to use it for very specific purposes and considering what we know about Arlecchino's character it makes total sense for them to use it for her (rather like we've heard it in a few other certain boss fights).
    As far as why her name is what it is, she's in the same organization as La Signora, Scaramouche, and Childe (I believe you've done all of their boss themes?...if you haven't you should lol). So they all have a few leitmotifs that crop up that shows the common thread between them but really my point is with the name. Arlecchino is a codename like the others are and they are related to the Commedia del'Arte. So yeah, that's a thing. :)

    • @spiritus_noctis

      I think one of the reasons people dislike the EDM is that it used to always be connected with the abyss, so its out of place here.
      Personally i dont know where Arlecchino's powers come from (havent played her quest yet in case its mentioned there) but i do see some room for the EDM to be justified there.
      From a musical standpoint i find it a bit boring. It also reminds me a bit too much of the EDM in Scara's bossfight

    • @Natsu
      @Natsu 2 месяца назад +7

      the EDM in Scara's boss makes a lot of sense though because we are literally fighting a mecha, but the use of shakuhachi provides that "organic and human" component which almost engages into the dialogue with the "inorganic" and mechanical part of Scara. What I love about that boss theme is that both of these components work together seamlessly during the whole track. In Arlecchino's case the dubstep in the second phase just comes out of nowhere and in my opinion it doesn't complement anything. I get what they wanted to do with this part, I really do, it just probably doesn't work for me, especially out of game context.

    It really says a lot that even myself - a person whose music taste is VERY old school and acoustic i.e I like big orchestras choirs and jazz, nothing rap/trap/hip-hop/heavy metal related - really REALLY liked this boss theme. Normally the EDM would put me off immediately, but somehow this track is pushing all the right buttons for me in turns of bombast & drama. The EDM is nowhere near as harsh as I usually encounter (and can't stand), so I am very surprised that listeners who normally share my music tastes, didn't like it.
    Maybe I'm not as closed-off and grandpa-ish in my music taste as I thought...not a bad place to be.
    Edit: by the way, it looks like the composers did their job right if you were able to discern the duality of Arlecchino from just this boss music. She is indeed a tragic anti-hero, with a tragic traumatic past. She is operating under intense anger that have since mellowed out into meticulous scheming and hiding a lot of humanity behind a mask of cold objectivity. She is a very fascinating character, the music reflected her dimensions perfectly.

    nice analysis and reaction from you as usual. its interesting that the opinions about this theme is completely split into absolutely love it and absolutely hate it, even among musicians. imo, this ost is so context heavy, so many details in the song that matches with the character Arlecchino herself. yes, it is not for everyone’s ears, but i personally enjoy it.

    • @skygrass19
      @skygrass19 2 месяца назад +1

      I myself is 50-50 on this. I keep on replaying it bec I like it overall. Here’s my take, im not trying to compare but mostly all the bosses theme has a main melody that you’d hear from either the intro, then to the climax with added beat drop. Arlecchino’s was like scattered all over the place and I don’t follow. It’s not even about the phases or the diff genres mixed, but like they were all not tied or transitioned together.
      To be fair, phase 1 to early phase 2 were smooth, but right after the woman sings, the melodies were like gone 🤷🏼. I like the singing part, dont get me wrong, but what’s after that sounded “huh” to me. No wrap up melodies, no resolution, no combination of prev melodies. Just my thought on it. I still listen to it everyday though. 🙂

    The other musically inclined folks I've seen comment on their distaste mostly centers around the piece as a standalone piece of music. It's objectively correct to observe that the inclusion of EDM in other Genshin tracks (save for the second phase of the Narwhal boss) is something that enters and exits, blending with the rest of the composition. I'd personally argue that in those cases, the EDM is a supporting element. In this piece, the EDM section is abrupt and "out of place," which as a piece of standalone music, ignoring context, doesn't flow well, which I can agree with. The EDM section has the EDM leading rather than supporting.
    Personally, I feel that the context can smooth out that flow by tying it together in an unseen way. There's also your case where you're seeking to understand what the music is trying to convey. As a piece that serves a purpose in the greater context of the game, I think it does a great job of conveying what it's supposed to. Another commenter mentioned that it doesn't necessarily fit well during the fight it is featured, and that's somewhat fair given that the music's abrupt shift is not timed to anything in the fight. People were likely more forgiving of the Narwhal Phase 2 because the entire piece was EDM and it was the context for the entire phase.
    This track is definitely one of the harshest contrasts Genshin's OST has provided us and as such it was probably destined to be polarizing (heh). Arlecchino is not a blend, anything but. She is comprised of dualities and contrasts.

      @akii7550 2 месяца назад +4

      I’ll have to add that lots of those who disliked that part understood why HYV did it and admits that for the greater context, the piece STILL DID A PERFECT JOB IN CONVEYING THE IMAGE. We still understood the message, the topic, and stylistic choice.
      Buuuuuuuuuuuut, if we remove that aspect just to enjoy it as a standalone piece of music, then it’s not as enjoyable as the other boss themes. It is my opinion that Music should not be reliant on context, but rather use it to make it extra good.
      Of course those who outright disliked it by saying it “doesn’t fit at all” or completely disregarding why the composers chose to that is, imo, too biased.

    • @effortlessfury
      @effortlessfury 2 месяца назад +14

      @@akii7550 eh, if it were true that music should never be reliant on context, that implies that music should serve itself first before serving what it is being made for. Music isn’t some inherently sacred art form where it’s more important that it can stand alone than anything else. For example, ambient music isn’t exactly good listening material, but it serves its purpose well.
      Is it more ideal if the piece can stand alone? Of course. It is most important, however, that it serves its context, even if that is to its own detriment as a standalone piece.

    As I already said in another video, hating a really good track just because of one moment is terribly stupid, despite the fact that it sounds good and, in principle, suits the character and the boss battle. Everyone, of course, has their own opinion and musical preference, but excuse me, this is too much, if the composers and developers did this, it means that there is a big reason for this, and all the hatred towards EDM is a direct hate on the creativity and real vision of the character that the developers initially given to this character. In general, stop hating on everything that deviates even a little from the standards, because variety (Especially when it's done SOOO well) is great, especially for a boss fight, there is art and many genres of music, everything can't sound the same/just one style/just the way you wanted. Perhaps, as a EDM musician and gigantic EDM fan I can’t understand people, lol. Thanks to this song, it made me return to Genshin after a long time, heh

    Every region of Genshin has a village (or several). And most of them have wonderful OST's. I have very rarely seen reactions to them on YT (only comes to mind MarcoMeatball and his reaction to Vimara Village day and night OST's). It's your decision whether to do it or not))) From me - it's just suggestion.
    By default i say about day time tracks. Night time version usually softer and lullaby-like (but still beautiful). All current villages and their tracks:

    Springvale - Whence the Flow Cometh (length 1:27)
    Liyue
    Qingce Village - Peaceful Hike (2:11)
    Qiaoying Village - Verdant Longings (1:39), Springtide of Qiaoying (1:51)
    Inazuma
    Konda Village - A Harmonious Rest (2:40)
    Higi Village - Forgotten Epic (1:27)

    Vimara Village - Village Surrounded by Green (2:32)
    Aaru Village - Aspiration of Guardians (1:45), Settlement for Exiles (1:18)
    Fontaine
    Merusea Village - Melody of Merusea (1:59), Miraculous Whisper (1:55)
    Petrichor released, but not OST yet :(
    For my opinion, i prefer more Vimara OST, further Inazuma village's, further Merusea, further other OST's. But if pick one - i choose Forgotten Epic (because Village Surrounded by Green already have reaction)

    Marco Meatball has made a great explanation as to why some ppl (like him) may not have liked the edm part of this boss theme.
    To me the problem wasn't the edm existing. There's plenty of Genshin music that has edm that ppl absolutely loved. Mainly in Inazuma or a fan favorite like Scara's boss theme. I also really like the Narwhal boss theme.
    My issue is that it was way too similar to the Narwhal theme for what I think to be no reason. Instead of being a unique sound that fits with the flow for Arlecchino. There was no theming before hand that leads to being so similar to the Narwhal. It's just jarring and out of place.
    On top of the Narwhal theming not fitting. This edm doesn't work with the flow of the music. It just breaks it up and ruins the flow. All the other edm in Genshin has melody and flows well with all the surrounding music, so it was most likely intentional. This just ruins the enjoyment for me. Intentional or not I don't like it.
    They could've definitely made the Narwhal like theme flow well
    It would've still been weird but it would be more enjoyable.
    If y'all like it that's fine, music is subjective. That parts just not for me.

    • @polinatrofimova7851
      @polinatrofimova7851 2 месяца назад +5

      As it was mentioned by some other comments, EDM is due to her connection to the Crimson Moon, the Abyss/Khaenri'ah and her glitches, thus, it makes absolute sense from the thematical point of view. Her curse makes her similar to the Narwhal, so it had to be reflected in the music.

    • @noox13
      @noox13 2 месяца назад

      @@polinatrofimova7851
      You misunderstood my point.
      I wasn't saying all the edm makes no sense. Edm is fine. My issue was the way the edm was done here. Breaking up and ruining the flow.
      When I said the theming made no sense I was referring to the theme being so similar to the Narwhal instead of its own unique sound for Arlecchino. Not its connection to the curse and Khaeri'ah and stuff. Your comparison of the curse to the Narwhal has no basis and just sounds like an assumption spurred on by theories. You have no concrete evidence here so I'll have to disagree. The theming being so similar to the Narwhal makes no sense and is just annoying.
      Besides, even if it did make sense, that doesn't change how I feel about the song outside of that context. Which is also an important part of my enjoyment (Marco talks about this). Don't like how the flow is broken and that's never gonna change. But luckily that's only a subjective part of music and others can enjoy it just fine.

    So, I also didn't like the EDM to begin with, the first phase one was nice, I didn't expect it to go with the beat and the fatui theme, but in the 2nd phase It felt over done, I did my research and the main reason I had expected was the Crimson moon (as genshin uses EDM specifically for outworldly, curropted or forbidden knowledge, or Khaenri'ah related stuff), and fair enough, the link is to the Abyss/Khaenri'ah, which even though still excessive, I can give it a pass.

    The problem people have isn't necessarily the EDM as much as it's not used the same way it's used in the rest of the game. Also imo I feel the synth choice for the EDM parts wasn't thought out well enough to make people like it immediately.

      @@CatharsisYT the problem I have isn't honestly the music itself but how it's presented in game. That "snap" happens way before the music presents it.

      @@tawlney I'll agree that the organ is probably one of the lesser important sounds, sure, but it's definitely used to add pressure. The organ is an overwhelming, oppressive sound. Having it in there helps the listener feel repressed. Kind of like the "wall of sound" formula

    • @CatharsisYT
      @CatharsisYT  Месяц назад +7

      I gotta disagree. At a paint where the character snaps, there's distortion added through the synths. The first plucky distortion in there bouncing between left and right feels like ripping and tearing, and the bass synth under it pulls the presence forward. The snare adds a more prominent smack to the rhythm, which helps the aggression feel more intense and the listener feels smaller, overwhelmed by the saturation of it all. I can agree that it's a lot to take in, but I also believe that's the goal.

    • @willrof
      @willrof Месяц назад

      @@CatharsisYT I get your point, maybe this song is so polemic because it's hard to express why it feels lacking. To me, who has listened (and loved) all previous boss themes the EDM is the target of negative impact because it's far from a real climax for the song. The fact that the song ends shortly after makes you think "so that dubstep was the highest point?" And it leaves a bitter aftertaste. I guess the problem is that Signora, Azdaha and/or Scaramouche sets the bar really high.

    I feel that some of the hatred this song gets is more due to problems with the game overall. Long story short, people are starting to recognize the game's patterns leading to less enjoyment and more critical outlooks.
    So when a long-anticipated character came out after most of the nation's plot had resolved, had a fight with relatively low stakes, and we don't get to learn anything about the glitching until after the fight in a separate -character- quest, all the excitement and emotions of the fight were ruined for a lot of people, turning the song's fittingly harsh aggressiveness into annoyingly grating sound.

      I am genuinely just trying to understand what you are talking about. Separate character quest? The boss fight was a part of the character quest. If you did it separately then I am unsure why you are so judgmental about it. Games have flaws but I am unsure of what you speak of.

      @@jozefen2718 You are correct that I misspoke, the character quest is the half that has the boss fight. The issue is that quest tells us nothing about the glitching, the darkened cursed hands, the unique eyes, all the questions that people had before the update. The character quest introduced new questions and answered them all in the same quest, leaving the things people actually were curious about for elsewhere.
      Although even that misses the main point of my original comment, it doesn't really matter *why* the community has decided to be angry. The comment was that people went into the fight where this song played with more anger/criticism than normal, contributing to it being interpreted as "the worst" instead of the great and meaningfully unsettling song it might have otherwise been know as.
