same thing happened with the new Percy Jackson series on disney+. people were throwing tantrums because a Black girl was cast as one of the main characters who was described as white in the books, and the author had to come out with this brilliant line, "If you're mad about this casting, it doesn't matter how many times you read the books. You didn't learn anything from them."

Even the last girl who played annabeth was white but she still got backlash because she was a brunette at first and annabeth was supposed to be blonde…
one skill of Trevor's that i absolutely admire and envy, is his ability to bring forth cogent points in the most humorous way without taking way from the pensiveness of an argument. and the humor also makes some topics which are heavy and complex quite intelligible and unpacked that even the most obstinate person can comprehend.
It's sad he has to appeal to Middle America in this way. But when folks of brainwashed themselves into thinking that they are Elite you have to find a way to talk down to them that they enjoy.
Yoooo I remember the deaf mermaid Trevor is talking about!!! Her name is Gabriella and she was a friend of Ariels from the Little Mermaid animated series! She’s was a great musician and had an octopus friend named Ollie who would act as a sign language interpreter I remember wishing I could be friends with her and Ariel soooo much!!!
The one argument I hate is the "Disney live action remakes are always bad, they're all awful", yet without fail, these same people are ALWAYS on threads, posts, conversations, etc. about every upcoming Disney film. I hate the Kardashians, but I'm never going into their online communities expressing my hate... I simply ignore them. I don't understand the point of knowing you hate something, yet continuing to put your energy into something you know you'll hate. It's like these people *want* to be angry.
I’m a ghostly pale red head who LOVED the little mermaid as a child and when I heard of the live action I wasn’t very excited because I assumed they would pick the best actress and give her a red wig which means she would probably have nice tan skin and no freckles (things I was insecure about as a child). When I heard it was going to be Halle I was ecstatic. I knew what that would mean to so many MORE little girls. I had my Ariel and she is still there along with all the other Disney red heads Trevor mentioned. This will make such a big impact for so many children, being able to see themselves represented and I’m so happy for it. It was long overdue. Halle was definitely the best person for the job and she is going to do amazing!
My daughter is also a pale redhead who LOVED the Little Mermaid, and she has the exact same take on that you do. In fact, it's the first Disney live-action remake that both of us are excited to watch!
You are exactly right!! This could not have been more beautifully said. Thank you for sharing the truth in your heart for all little girls. -An Army Veteran and Teacher ❤️🇺🇸
I think that would soil Stan Lee's name. I believe Stan Lee created Black Panther to give black people more representation when 80 to 90 percent of the Marvel Characters were white.
The original mermaid wasn’t even called Ariel. Some folklore (which the story was long before Hans C. penned it all down) described the No name mermaid as green, others said she was white, others describe her more iridescent like fish. The original mermaid only wanted to marry the prince to gain an immortal soul & my grandmother would tell the story (Not the Disney version) as a cautionary tale about respecting our elders. Many of the people objecting to a black mermaid understand representation & relatability when they’re changing the story to suite themselves. Someone at work actually told me they thought POC should be happy with Tiana, the hard working gumbo princess & her broke prince because that’s more relatable for us than The Little Mermaid. When I asked her what she had in common with Ariel that I didn’t, outside of skin color she couldn’t name a single thing.
Here's the thing with Tiana: she spends MOST of that movie out in the swamp as a frog, very little as a human. Why can't the mermaid be black? I think they owe a black princess some screen time!
@@Fercurix gosh, Rapunzel here in Europe was an established character long before Disney existed. Disney made a great film, but it doesn't have much in common with the fairy tale us Germans grew up with. Us Europeans could have made a great fuss over all our fairy tales that Disney turned into some American stories, but we understand, that story telling can't be conservative if it wants to survive.
As a redheaded girl who grew up with four redheaded sisters, I'm confident that if anything, red hair is over-represented in media. (How do we know these murders are linked? The victims all have RED HAIR! 🙄) I have issues with *how* red-haired women are usually portrayed (we're either vixens or comic relief), but not the quantity of them. The Little Mermaid was not a redhead until Disney made her one in 1989. And while I enjoyed a year of little girls going wide-eyed and whispering to their mothers "there's Ariel!", I'm not, in fact, Ariel, and I don't need any faux outrage on behalf of redheads. We're doing fine.
I don't know.. I've seen Jessica Chastain, Isla Fischer, Amy Adams, Bryce Dallas Howard, that girl from It, etc. play all sorts of characters. If anything, redheaded men have a more legit gripe.

Trevor is completely right about this. My Hispanic sisters were told constantly about how they “took someone else’s spot” when they got accepted into Ivy League schools
Sure, under a purely meritocratic system, that doesn't make any sense. Still, the criticism of casting Scarlett Johansson as the Major for Ghost in the Shell is an implication that some people think she took a spot that rightfully belonged to a Japanese actress. Same for white actors cast into Gods of Egypt, or The Last Airbender.
I laughed when Trevor said he often watches the red-haired little mermaid, but by the end if his rant, it was clear that he wasn't kidding. Trevor has spent some time thinking about this!!!
If you think of how he grew up having to hide his identity, he surely can identify with the little mermaid. He knows how that feels, also not having a voice.
How is everyone surprised there’s a backlash from Disney race swapping iconic characters. Just make a new character. Disney can afford to make a new story.
Perhaps, Disney has lost all its creativity and have not be able to come up with a new character that can guarantee a similar hit to other existing princess characters..😂 So they are doing this cuz there's no way to earn money except using pc If not, this situation can't be explained
People really shouldn’t talk about the “history“ of these fictional characters. It was a trip growing up and watching Tarzan be “king of the jungle” in Africa. I remember being told about the Lone Ranger and Tonto. They wouldn’t allow even the person playing the Indian to be Indian. And that story was actually based off of a black man. Chinese people weren’t even allowed to play Chinese in America movies. It’s clear that I will leave this earth and we will all still be bickering over petty things. Life is short people. Live and let live. Love and be loved🙏🏾💞
Exactly. Anthony Quinn played "Zorba The Greek", & he was of Mexican descent. Lauren Becall was hired as an actress because she didn't look Jewish, & interestingly enough, the heads of the movie studio, Warner Bros., WERE Jewish.
People have been doing that for all of human history. That's why there are often several versions of common myths and stories. While arguing about fictional tales like this may seem pointless most of the time, fictional stories have been such an important part of our history. Both as entertainment, but also as a way to preserve parts of our past and to teach important lessons to the younger generations. The arguments we have now will most definitely be forgotten, but might end up influencing how stories are told 300 years from now.
Very true but that's what's trending because stupidity sells these day, I guess there was a reason for famine , wars and natural disasters other than that you will find people fooling 🤷🏾♂️

Aside from the ending, it’s very close to the original. Even if I didn’t absorb the text that well I still watched another version so I know how close the Disney version is
The majority of the backlash is not about the race but playing on people's emotions, misleading them that non-white Little Mermaid stands for representation. It doesn't, it's a controversial money making move. Little Mermaid has white skin and red hair. SpongeBob is yellow and has a tie. They're just characters. They could just as easily have a new mermaid character or any other story for a musical but they chose to do something 'controversial'. The same is with the new Snow White movie with an actress who isn't white. Do you honestly think it's because of representation? Believe me, it's not. Personally they can make every new Disney movie with all non-white cast, I don't care, I'm not their audience. In a few years people will be talking how disgusting it was to do these business moves that people mistake for representation.
Evidently, Hans Christian Anderson wrote the Little Mermaid in response to his unrequited love for another man who was in love with and married a woman. The three of them remained friends for years, but Anderson was heartbroken. In the original, Ariel trades her voice for the ability to walk; however, her every step is agony. When her 'true love' falls for someone else, she returns to the sea and dies - whereupon her body becomes seafoam. Let's see what they say when Disney makes that movie.
Technically you could say it is a transgender allegory as Hans Christian Anderson describes their feelings towards their friend as "being like a woman" in love letters to their friend, and in the story (the little mermaid), they wrote in response to their friend's engagement to a woman, wrote themselves as a woman, as Ariel.
@@itsjustme6018 I guess I could have been more clear. In this case, I'm referring to the people who complain that the choice of a non-white actress to play a mythical character is somehow problematic. Let's make the movie where Ariel and her merman brother both fall in love with the prince, and the prince has to decide which is 'true love.' Let's see what THEY say then. : )
There are numerous mermaid stories from cultures all over the world, and in a lot of them the mermaids are pretty scary. As is, way more likely to maul and eat you than fall in love with you. I would love to see an adaptation of one of those 😊
There was a show called Siren where the mermaid was scary and killing people. I don’t remember how many seasons it had, but it was on Hulu at one point.

i like how trevor ignores the actual argument against the casting. Which is, if you want diversity why not create your own original princess. There is tons of material from African folklore. Thats the thing they dont want to do the work they just want to steal it.
who is "they"? this argument is ignorant to me. If you have a problem with the casting you should take it up with the director who casted Halle who btw said she was the best and primer choice for Ariel. There are so many artists and writers many of whom are black that have or are coming up with original stories from African folklore that are being made into live action. @Johannes do you even watch this video in full? Trevor already stated there are more red headed Disney characters then there are black women characters.
I think that every time they release a remake of a movie, they should challenge people's expectations, and make the characters different intentionally everytime. Then the racists eventually all die of heart attacks, and the world is clean of their ideals.
The First Mermaid story was Mami Wata. A Black Woman in the form of a Mermaid from the West coast of Africa. That story was being told as far back as 4000 B.C.

@Johannes I don’t like the black people can have red hair argument as a defense for black Ariel. That said, it is true that some black people can have red hair, especially those with some white admixture (i.e. most African Americans)
@Johannes Most black Americans (the ones that have been here for multiple generations) have white admixture due to the legacy of slavery. And yes, red hair is rare, even on white people. It’s even rarer on black people.
But why do you people have to make remakes of movies?? The original little mermaid was beautiful and this one is not attractive at all so it changes the entire story..
Why not both? Disney already changed the story of the Little Mermaid. The cartoon we all watched is not the original story. If they can add a singing crab, they can cast a black actress in the main role, and you can just decide to not complain about it.
First and foremost, Disney has the absolute right to cast whoever they want in their movies, animated or live-action. I don't especially care who is cast, because I want all actors to have an opportunity to influence the culture however they can and make as much money as Disney is willing to offer them. That being said, if anyone is going to be concerned about anything, we probably all should be concerned about how it looks like Disney is merely using these live-action projects over the last 15 years in order to justify PREVENTING their "intellectual property" (which was basically borrowed from PUBLIC DOMAIN stories) from falling back into the public domain, where it belongs. #PrincessesForThePeople
Yea I’m watching all this people losing their minds about disney ruining the little mermaid and I’m just sitting here like, is this movie going to be terrible? Very likely yes. But the actress’s race has absolutely nothing to do with it. Disney has a lot of problems, casting poc actors is not one of them
People didnt have a problem with Jake Gyllenhaal playing the Prince of Persia (Middle East). No one had an issue with Gerard Butler playing 'Gods of EGYPT" (AFRICA). But people have an issue with a black girl playing a mermaid.
Uh no, there was outrage over both castings. Also when Disney said they were looking outside of middle eastern and Indian possibilities of actors/actresses as they couldn't find what they were looking for initially.
I remember when Queen Latifa played Ursula on the Live performance they did a couple of years ago. People were complaining then too. Sorry everyone, they couldn't find a PURPLE woman to play her. It's ridiculous!
I’m black and I don’t like the new mermaid I’m glad their making more black movies but I feel like it’s lazy and incentive to focus on remaking old European fairytales and putting a black person instead of just writing a story about African fairytales something new and entertaining for everyone to enjoy a perfect example of this is Black panther. The problem people have is that they don’t want 2 versions of the same character we want new characters

Then he said there are many African origin fairytales, myths, and folklore with princesses and many beautiful stories and would rather have those stories in a movie than "handy downs" from white tales, and felt the black community deserve their stories and not be put in other stories. but Disney's animated movie is not a Danish/European telling of the story. If it were there wouldn't have been a Jamaican crab with calypso inspired orchestra including steel pans. Those elements don't sound very Danish to me: Sebastian and Under the Sea are not Danish and put a Caribbean twist on the Disney version that make no sense for a Danish story or princess. By casting Halle Bailey, they not only got the best person for the job but corrected that appropriation from the Disney animated movie because if they casted a red-headed white girl I would really would like to see how the optics of her dancing along to Under the Sea would have worked out in the live action - it would have been looked extremely goofy. In conclusion they were lucky to get her
The thing is, Disney people asked her to come audition after seeing her at the Grammy, which she did, and still beat out all the others who auditioned for the part. Smh.

Representation by skin color is not the presentation that you want. People compare themselves to other people by their actions, goals, morals, not looks. If a child looks for physical similarities in order to like someone - this child does not have a healthy upbringing. Such upbringing will cut off emotional connections to many characters of different gender, race, religion, ect that are worthy of being followed and emulated.

No, because Queen Latifah has that swagger Ursula has. And she doesn‘t look totally different. Had they cast Ariana Grande for Ariel it would have been fine. I was very disappointed by their pick for Eric too. He looks like a school boy and nothing like the character.
Also I dug into what you were saying about this mermaid that was made 30 years ago that was an original Black mermaid. I mind children, have three of my own, I had five of them here, two eight year olds, two nine, one eleven year old. Showed them the trailer, girls can't wait to see it, discussed the backlash over race with my white Irish children, they thought it was a joke people trolling, how can that be a problem. I think there is hope, we have a generation in our care that really doesn't care about race and what it means, and not in a bad way, they accept each other.
At one point 20th Century Fox wanted Julia Roberts to play Harriet Tubman. They also got Scarlett Johansson to play a traditionally Japanese roll in a Japanese manga inspired movie
Huh. During the latter debacle it was brought up multiple times that the major's shell looks nothing like the actual asian characters in the anime. Was that false?
The problem wasn’t that the Hollywood Ghost In The Shell cast a well-known white actress as a character that had been traditionally Japanese. The original Japanese manga cartoonist and his publisher didn’t care. They were just happy that they were getting paid for the licensing. The problem is that it was just an ultimately really bad movie.
Please, don't play the racist card. People don't like characters to change in stories they like. It's as simple as that. What would you think of a white guy as Black Panther? It's the same thing but the other way around.
Hi, Red Headed little girl here. The Little Mermaid was my favorite when I was a child, it meant a lot to me. To make a long story short, F*** the racists. I want any little black girl who watches this movie to feel the same way I did as a kid. They should get to have this experience. I hope some little girl out there with dark skin and red hair watches this move and sees herself in it. I hope she finds inspiration and acceptance, love and joy. I hope they all do.
It's weird isn't it? We adopt things like the Little Mermaid into American culture, where we obviously have people of all colors and children of all colors but when we want to remake a piece of what has become AMERICAN culture, there is backlash for using people who aren't white...claiming 'cultural reasons' hate to tell people, American culture is a big old mix of stuff.
This also happened with the new Percy Jackson TV show casting. And the author wrote a whole article calling those people out for their discrimination/racism.
@Do what you need to with her, then broom her fast. the original story that Disney based the little mermaid off of it was literally green. Get over yourself
People simply said it was because she was black, thts why she was casted. Diversity box checked. Have you been living in a box? Do you know nothing about affirmative action or woke culture? Anyways, tht is most likely why she was hired and the author is just defending her because she is a child, who doesnt know any better.

same thing happened with the new Percy Jackson series on disney+. people were throwing tantrums because a Black girl was cast as one of the main characters who was described as white in the books, and the author had to come out with this brilliant line, "If you're mad about this casting, it doesn't matter how many times you read the books. You didn't learn anything from them."

When I asked her what she had in common with Ariel that I didn’t, outside of skin color she couldn’t name a single thing.
yet Ariel is an established CHARACTER, then give her a differant name atleast.
I am so sorry you had to hear that. It was so insensitive. Relatable ? Wth, it's as if there aren't poor white people.
Here's the thing with Tiana: she spends MOST of that movie out in the swamp as a frog, very little as a human. Why can't the mermaid be black? I think they owe a black princess some screen time!

In a few years people will be talking how disgusting it was to do these business moves that people mistake for representation.
@@perfect0nly hmm it sounds like you do care…
Evidently, Hans Christian Anderson wrote the Little Mermaid in response to his unrequited love for another man who was in love with and married a woman. The three of them remained friends for years, but Anderson was heartbroken. In the original, Ariel trades her voice for the ability to walk; however, her every step is agony. When her 'true love' falls for someone else, she returns to the sea and dies - whereupon her body becomes seafoam. Let's see what they say when Disney makes that movie.
Yes Ive watched the original movie when i was a kid. And i really dont like it😭
Technically you could say it is a transgender allegory as Hans Christian Anderson describes their feelings towards their friend as "being like a woman" in love letters to their friend, and in the story (the little mermaid), they wrote in response to their friend's engagement to a woman, wrote themselves as a woman, as Ariel.

First and foremost, Disney has the absolute right to cast whoever they want in their movies, animated or live-action.

Yea I’m watching all this people losing their minds about disney ruining the little mermaid and I’m just sitting here like, is this movie going to be terrible? Very likely yes. This is the only fair critique, until the films released.
Oh no, people had a problem with that too.
I remember when Queen Latifa played Ursula on the Live performance they did a couple of years ago. People were complaining then too. Sorry everyone, they couldn't find a PURPLE woman to play her. It's ridiculous!

Let's not forget Brandy and Whitney in Cinderella...also Keke Palmer in the Broadway version.
The thing is, Ursula isn't supposed to be pretty. Some people can't handle when "pretty" characters are "suddenly" played by black actors, and then have the audacity to claim that they're not racists.

I have a black friend who is angry at The Little Mermaid remake, when I asked him why? His response stunned me.... he said why are these characters from European or White folktale origins getting black recasts but still tell the white story? Then he said there are many African origin fairytales, myths, and folklore with princesses and many beautiful stories and would rather have those stories in a movie than "handy downs" from white tales, and felt the black community deserve their stories and not be put in other stories.
I gotta be honest that's a very solid response.......
Africa had tales about mermaids so that’s not quite right

but Disney's animated movie is not a Danish/European telling of the story. My daughter is one of the red-headed girls who grew up with the Little Mermaid and she is so excited to see someone else represented. She knows that the same way that she was happy to see someone like her represented, she knows other girls will be happy to see themselves represented as well. It's about the only live-action Disney remake that either of us is excited to see!
@@ScarlettM Where did you get any of that from my comment? Anyone who does not see themselves represented is going to feel empowered by seeing someone with something that makes them feel different about themselves being represented. She didn't like Ariel because she had red hair, she liked that she saw herself represented. Just as I said that she is glad that other people who don't see themselves often represented will also feel that empowerment.
I’m assuming you have red hair because your daughter does and as a black woman i have an extremely genuine question. Why when representation conversations begin, is there always someone talking about red hair? To me, hair color is not a topic for real conversations surrounding diversity.
For me, discrimination against something that you can’t change about yourself like gender or sexuality or race are what needs to be the venter of those conversations. Race especially because we wear it whenever we go outside. You can see someone’s sexuality or even gender all the time.
But every time a representation conversation i see comment everywhere about red head representation. For me, it sounds absurd. But im wondering if there’s a narrative I’m missing? Pls assist🥰
@@izzywoods794 well there has been discrimination against redheads, not to the same extent as what black people face, it is probably closer to something like colorism. It exists though, there are phrases like "beat you like a red headed step child". I think a lot of it actually comes from anti-Irish sentiment, it isn't as common now, but there used to be signs in windows that said things like "no dogs, no irish". It is all Tribalism right? Ursula was actually based on a drag queen but yes they absolutely did try to code her as nonwhite and that was groaty of them
No, because Queen Latifah has that swagger Ursula has. And she doesn‘t look totally different. Had they cast Ariana Grande for Ariel it would have been fine. I was very disappointed by their pick for Eric too. He looks like a school boy and nothing like the character.

The problem wasn’t that the Hollywood Ghost In The Shell cast a well-known white actress as a character that had been traditionally Japanese. The problem is that it was just an ultimately really bad movie.
Please, don't play the racist card. People don't like characters to change in stories they like. It's as simple as that. What would you think of a white guy as Black Panther? It's the same thing but the other way around.
