I recently commented on Gil's RUclips page about this and how he's perpetuating years of trauma and insecurities for many dark skinned people and was instantly called "soft" by someone replying to me who thought Gil's comments (disguised as "jokes") were funny. My primary concern revolves around the idea that black excellence can only exist in an American context. Like black life isn't relevant outside of an American context. We don't have a mechanism that can celebrate both MLK and Steve Biko as influential activists. Or LeBron James and Kylian Mbappe as amazing athletes. There is an American exceptionalism that has permeated black consciousness that's unhealthy. It's sad.

This has not yet sat well with us, and Africa at large. The comments released by the two black Americans is too disturbing to go not condemned.
