    You are brilliant and well spoken in explaining the iPhone 12 Pro series photography tips. I learned something I was not aware of from turning off scene detection and HDR mode as well as some other features you highlighted. I enjoy taking photos of the night sky’s stars and visible planets in my area of the US in North Carolina. There fortunately is not too much urban light pollution but still some here in outside near Greensboro. I am excited to start trying the new settings but need to find my tripod buried in the garage somewhere. In the meantime I’ll stabilize on my wooden fence tonight and see what difference in quality I get.
    I’ve subscribed to you months ago but had not activated my notifications button until now. I watched your video on photographing the moon at night. Not certain if that was addressing the older phones before this 12 Pro. Hoping on better results here now. But I think daytime moon photos will still produce the best outcome as the contrast issues you mentioned before.
    Thanks again. You’re awesome! I’ll keep watching for more of your tips and express my improvements ahead as well. Gday Mate!

I’m gonna get an iPhone 13 Pro for xmas and I love astrophotography, unfortunately I don’t have the budget now for large scope, high end cameras, guided tripod, etc… so I was wondering if we can do it with an iPhone… and yet I found you channel, that’s an instant sub!! you can do way better astrophotography with way less money, any aps-c camera with wide aperture lens and image stacking will produce way better results for 1/2 of the price of the iphone. Incomparably better results.

    Thanks for the great video on iPhone 12 night mode settings. I’m sure that you have discovered that the night mode and smart HDR are mutually exclusive features that is made clear by your turning off the Smart HDR in the settings menu. When in Night mode clicking the HDR icon has the opposite effect on the night mode icon and visa versa. Night mode is a very powerful tool and any stray ambient light - like in my location - can easily cause bright spots and lens flares ruining any Astro shots.

    • @ShayneMostyn
      @ShayneMostyn  3 года назад +1

      Exactly mate. What I have found with the HDR turned on in the menu is that any ambient light will occasionally have a great hazy area, when I turn it off, I am yet to see it.

    Hey Shayne! Thanks so much for this. I’m using iPhone 13 Pro Max and noticed that HDR and Scene Detection aren’t options anymore. Upon looking up Apples documentation on this, Scene Detection is listed as an iPhone 12 exclusive. HDR is also mentioned as an iPhone 12 and earlier feature - and iPhone 13 Pro is only mentioned as video HDR.
    With these settings gone, do you have any other suggestions at all? I took some photos tonight and they just aren’t what I hoped for. I then used my 12 Pro Max and got better results with those settings turned off. Interested to hear your thoughts.

    with the sensor shift technology in the pro max, apple could easily bring the pixel shift function to the phone, so it would take multiple photos and the sensor would move minimal between each shot and bring high resolution photos... hardware is there, just needs the software

    Another great Shayne. I live in a high light pollution area in the U.S but my in laws have a place in Northern Michigan and I figured out that my 11 Pro could make it come alive at night in photos. These tips will help even more. I never thought to turn off scene optimizer. The 12 Pro is my daily driver now (I like to shoot one handed much of the time) but I decided to pick up an S21 Ultra when I found a really good deal on Swappa online to play with based on your videos. I want to learn a bit more about manual controls and it seemed like the right tool since I don’t know how far I want to push Astro stuff. Since I have the Snapdragon version, I was able to get the GCam Astro working and I have tested it out and it has produced some remarkably clear shots in an area with heavy noise pollution. I am dying to test it out “up North” soon. Clearly GCAm wasn’t designed for this sensor, but it still stacks five minutes of shots with 16 second exposures as the longest and it should be fun.

    • @ShayneMostyn
      @ShayneMostyn  3 года назад

      I would be interested to see the results of that. I think the manual mode would likely capture more stars over the Gcam.

    • @JasonPeltz
      @JasonPeltz 3 года назад

      @@ShayneMostyn I will let you know when I get “Up North” as we call it. I finally had a clear night to test the Ultra 30 second long exposure against my 12 Pro in Night Mode and the Ultra is quite impressive. I don’t have the Max, but the iPhone 12 Peo is just a tad behind. The G Cam app on the Ultra really looks nice also but if any light comes into he picture it just sucks it right in so I can’t fairly compare it until I get out of this light pollution. The iPhone night mode has that issue a bit also, but I am just amazed that the GCam works so well when it hasn’t been tuned for this sensor. Sorry if I am a slow on the uptake, but I missed exactly how I join that Discord and give you some money to keep this up. I would love to do that..

    • @JasonPeltz
      @JasonPeltz 3 года назад +1

      I have not had a chance to get away from light pollution yet, but surprisingly I think I am getting more stars with Gcam on the Ultra than manual mode. When GCam fails, it fails bad, but when it works it works really well. This is surprising to me since it was not tuned for this sensor. I plan on really putting together a good comparison on the facebook group as soon as I can get to a better location, probably in May.

    I took a few different shots of the moon last night through my telescope , a couple with and a couple without pro raw and the ones without pro raw looked better. Maybe it’s because I used a telescope, but when I went to Snapseed to edit they looked really dark from the pro raw. It may be a combination of a bright moon and using a telescope, not sure though
