BTO I worked for surprised me one fall. I had chisel plowed with his 4320 Deere he bought new that I put the first ten hours on plowing the afternoon & night it was delivered. He had a early chisel plow, think it was a Graham, more like a field cultivator than today's chisel plows like a Glenco or M&W EarthMaster. It stirred up about a 14-16 ft swath. With no duals on the 4320 it was a load, ran 3rd & 4th gear. Working in 80 acre fields it was a L-O-N-G day. But then I get sent out in this slightly used 2470 with the same chisel plow. I forget what gear I was running in but it was at least 50% faster than the 4320 could pull it. The 2470 had Firestone 28Lx26 tires. Pump had been turned up a little, supposedly making 220 hp. What impressed me most was how comfortable the cab was. In the next few years after running the 2470 I had the opportunity to run a White 4-150 disking up wet drowned out spots in corn fields, only pulling a 14 ft disk, I was running 7-8 mph, lots of turning. With the articulated tractor when you turn the wheel the tractor bends in the middle and you get tosses side to side. At the end of a day I could barely get out of the seat and walk. Then couple years later I worked weekends chisel plowing for my landlord, his 8440 Deere and a 2-shanks too big Glenco Soil-Saver, and the 2nd year about the same size M&W Earth-Master disk-Ripper. I was WAY down in A range with the Glenco, think 3rd & 4th gear. Was a little faster with the EarthMaster. The 8440 had been turned up a little, around 200 hp, had been as high as 220 but it blew up. From an operator's perspective, the CASE was the nicest tractor to run, the White was next, and a fair distance back the Deere.
Thank you for the great history. The first tractor I ever got to ride in was a 2470. My neighbor bought it new in 1977 with a 7-18 Case 700 plow. It was always impressive to watch.
That ripper sure looks like a well engineered piece of kit. Love the Case 4WS/4WD tractors of this era. Preferred the earlier paint scheme as shown here too - the later red and black scheme just didn't do it for me.
The 2870 I drove had the biggest single tires that you could get and fluid in all 4 tires and it would pull anything that you put behind it . My neighbor Jimmy Hargett had one that had duals and it was a Hoss to ! It brings back memories of sometimes 100 +hour weeks, enjoyed the flash back.
I really appreciate the gentleman that spends countless hours and days recording these awesome tractors and equipment that work till our country’s farms i miss working the tractors picking cotton corn and sorghum, unfortunately the pay Isn’t all that great so I came to the trucking industry. Still miss the farm life country on big tractor power🇺🇸
When David Brown was still existing by the color. David Brown tractors were actually very handy reliable manœuvrable fuel efficient and perfectly made for European farm.
My brother and I bought a 1200 in Marshalltown Iowa and drove it home to Center point...we needed a little more power and Case in Cedar Rapids had a 504 that had been removed and replaced with a Cummins... we bought it and with a little radiator modification made it fit...plenty of power for our needs...
I own two 2670s two 2870s and a 4490 they work hard for about 3 weeks (hopefully that's all) in the spring I love mine. No bells and whistles good hp and we can do any type of shop work on them
When i was growing up we had both a 2670 with rowcrop duels and a 4490 with wider singles riding in them are some of my first memories of being on our farm. I can remember falling asleep in the back of the cab to the hum of the engine breaking ground on a new property
1:34 and 3:21 There are a lot of those tractors in my country 🇵🇦 in a factory that produces sugar cane and rice. They look very old but they work very good.
Liked the video. In the seventies there was a lot of snow in the mid west where these tractors were. Straight blades were affixed to the front of the tractors for plowing snow. The tractors were Crab steered causing the blade to be angled to remove snow. Townships contracted farmers to clear the roads. One big problem was the air breather would freeze up and destroy the engine.
I worked the 2470 for many years, from early 70th to 1991. It was a fine tractor by then, but for today's standards.. primitive. It needed like 2 hours greasing & maitenance every week for 2 persons full time, hard to get into the motor from above, and many more small issues. In all, it was a fine tractor for its time.
Grandaddy bought a 1470 in 1970 I believe. Not running now but I hope to get it that way. Said it was one of the first in that part of north Georgia at the time.
Fine tractors ! We ran two 2670's and a 2870 in the late 70's through the 80's. The key to low maintenance was service and do not run them too fast to where they would bounce a bit, that was not good for the power shift transmission. Keep 'em steady and they would do very well.
4690 case with duals all around. Just shy of 10k hours. Use for discing corn stubble, working bean ground with a field cultivator and then deep tillage with a 7 shank in line ripper.
Very cool. I grew up watching a 4690. It was bought new in 1982 on singles with a Case SC Coulter Chisel. It chopped corn with an NH 1600 pull type with a 4 row corn head. In 1990 it had duals added for pulling a Case IH 4200 soil finisher. It was traded on a Case IH 9250.
In reality the 4 wheel steer was a horrible design, it had tons of grease fittings that farmers didn't grease, it had tons of parasitic power loss, they were horrible in mud with a short wheel base, and in the real world crab steering didn't work, and the only steering that would was the coordinated steering. The steering modes were really a marketing gimmick. The tractor is a wheel loader running backwards, and it vanished because the articulated tractors were so much better. I had 4 of these. A 2470,2670 2870 and ,4894
Very cool. Hesston tillage Equipment is something I hope to find to film. The first tractor I ever got to ride in was a Case 2470 on a 7 bottom Case 700 plow.
I remember sitting in a late 70s Traction King (if I remember correctly) at an auction when I was little. I thought it was so weird that this big, 4 wheel drive was non articulating. Even weirder with the crab steering.
At the 2:40 you said the 4690 was 219 hp but the 4690 was 261 hp the 4490 was 219 hp, great video!! Love the old Case tractor!! Had a 4690 until a drunk hit me and totaled it!!😔 but still run a 2390
Dad bought a case 2670 in 1975 nice tractor for the day traded for a versatile 875 in 1978 but the case had just as much power the 875 was turned up to 325 up . Then dad traded for a John Deere 8670 a sick dog . Turned it up and still no power .
We have had all 3 on our farm, 24 26 and 28. Our 2470 was a yellow one, good tractor for a lot of years, constantly putting front ujoints in it, the crab steer was hard on them. 26 was a great tractor except for constant head trouble on the 504 engine. 28 was the best of them all till grandpa got it too hot discing and seized the engine. All three covered a ton of acres for us till they were wore out.
Lee Johnson, what troubles did you have on the heads with the 504 motor.? I got one in a 90 series and its one of the smoothest quietist gruntiest trouble free motor iv ever had in a tractor. Its in a 2290 and has been dynoed at 180 hp. 2590 are around 220, 230 from memory, so mine is nowhere near being overloaded. Iv never heard of head troubles with them but I guess theres a dud in every batch of everythings.
The 3 head design was notorious for cracking on the higher horsepower models example: 1570 2470 2670 ven 1370. We also have a 2290, good baling tractor. Not much of a puller, I’ve had to put 2 torque plates in it over the years, but if yours is dynoing at 180hp somebody has turned the pump way up. A 2290 is only rated at like 130. 1570 is like 190 and a 1370 is like 170. A 2290 torque plate and rear end isn’t going to hold 180 hp for very many years.
Hi Jason, nice video about traction king's history. Please do more of this, I also like to hear about the case international rigid frame tractors which were produced until 1995 and also about the last international row crop tractors, I guess the 88 series. Thanks and sorry for the bad English.
@@nellsonstout7001 we also use a 1175 for hay, a 1370 on the no till drill and a 2390 for tillage or where needed. The 4694 gets grain cart duty in the fall.
I enjoy these old equipment videos the fact is back then the dealership took care of customers fast forward to today all manufacturers only care about the sale. There once was a time the salesman would be there when the equipment was delivered. In today's world the salesman makes the sale the delivery driver delivers the product and dealer service is a thing of the past
My brother had one of the early ones with no cab. I put a few hours on it. If I remember correctly the rear steering was done by moving a lever. I remember seeing a warning sticker that read something to the effect of not to use rear steering in high gear. Were the later models rear wheels steered with a lever as well?
Always wondered why Case went for Scania engines in the larger tractors? Great engines but would have thought they could have found something suitable in the States. The white red colour scheme always looked the best even on the David Browns.
Those were the best tractors, they were balanced much better than the articlulated tractors with the outboard planetaries and rigid frame...........much like the new Claas tractors!
we bought a 2470 new in 1979 for $43000 has linkage and pto had a lot of problems but over time fixed the defects good to ride in stable and was a very big tractor when it came out still have it its nice to drive and not sure what one would replace it with as there is little to go wrong and the equal size tyres give a good ride after fixing the little problems its done a lot of work have 2 870s plus a project 870 to reassemble one 2090 one 2390 and one st251 steiger
That’s why if I had to start farming 750 acres or so tomorrow I’d go with a 4490 or 4494. With 3 point, PTO, and 4 wheel steer there’s not a lot I couldn’t accomplish
Them traction kings have got to be one of my favorite case tractors ever made.

2470 was our first 4×4 tractor when I was a kid. Fell asleep on a jacket on the floor many times.
They had big cabs
Once I almost fell out the back window
We still have our 2470 Dad bought back in 79. Been one hell of a tractor.
These are Thee BEST Tractors EVER Made still today!!!! CASE should have NEVER stopped making them Love those CASE TRACTORS DUEL TIRES 4X4 HELL YEAH!!!
I tell people I'm not a big fan of Case, but when I see these Traction Kings, I turn into a fan real quick.
That 2470 is doing an amazing job with that ripper at that depth ! Love the tough older tractors 👍
That ripper sure looks like a well engineered piece of kit. Love the Case 4WS/4WD tractors of this era. Preferred the earlier paint scheme as shown here too - the later red and black scheme just didn't do it for me.
CASE TRACTORS FOR LIFE !!!!!

2470 tractors are amazing tractors.
Quite a few made it across the pond to the UK, a friend had one, it was Scania powered, he used it in his forestry business.
Cool I bet that pulled well

That open station 1470 was one sweetheart of a tractor. I remember watching him down at rantoul when he had it there. Had one heck of a bark.

Have to find the 9240 or 9260, the last ode to the Traction Kings from Case IH after acquisition. That would be a good sight to see!
Thanks for the sights and sounds of Big Tractor power

Wow that's interesting, I didn't know they made that version
I have a 2670 run it on tillage every year been a good tractor
Farmed rice in south Texas. Had 1470 & 3 2470s they were good tractors.

Always thought the 4 wheel steer was cool, I'm surprised it's not used more commonly in tractors today.
Claas Xerion is the only type that uses 4 wheel steer now. It makes for a very compact tractor
In reality the 4 wheel steer was a horrible design, it had tons of grease fittings that farmers didn't grease, it had tons of parasitic power loss, they were horrible in mud with a short wheel base, and in the real world crab steering didn't work, and the only steering that would was the coordinated steering.

Some of the nicest tractors case made
@11:30 static charge chain or just loose safety chain? my neighbour has a Traction King collection.
Grew up with a 2470 pulling a 33' Hesston field cultivator. Curled up and fell asleep between the seat and rear window many, many times!
Very cool. Hesston tillage Equipment is something I hope to find to film. The first tractor I ever got to ride in was a Case 2470 on a 7 bottom Case 700 plow.

I pull a 11 shank case 6650 conser-till chisel and a 25ft landoll 875 tillol soil finisher with me 2670
I grew up running a 1966 Case 1200. Still have it, it has a 12 foot degelman blade on the front that I use for plowing snow

Have you had much opportunity to film the big 4994? I know the Williams brothers farm has a couple
Yeah we have a case 1470 that we pull a deep till disc with where there's is ruts harvest last year or where there is wet ground
Hi Jason, nice video about traction king's history.

Just look up steigers on RUclips those are the ridgid frames you are talking about
Great Vlog, good to see some real case steel, thanks
We run a 2670 for tillage pulling a case ih 335 barracuda and a 4694 for planting pulling a 12/23 kinze
Bobby Grimm film them if you ever get a chance. I’d love to watch them.

Do video of Big Roy in Austin Manitoba.
I love my 1974 2470
Local -Atlas Excavating has a 2470 for preparation work
What size are the tires on the 2470 in the beginning of the video?

Do a video on the Versitle bi directional tractor
Always wondered why Case went for Scania engines in the larger tractors? Great engines but would have thought they could have found something suitable in the States. The white red colour scheme always looked the best even on the David Browns.
Probably pound for pound couldn't find a better engine
Please mr make a video with international 4300
It’s way too rare to find one working
Those were the best tractors, they were balanced much better than the articlulated tractors with the outboard planetaries and rigid frame...........much like the new Claas tractors!
By far hellva lot better then the steigers or versatiles of the day

Case IH bought Steiger in 1986 and ever since then they have been marketing steigers
Very very nice jason in belgium we find not
I've been wanting to get one to pull my chopper and manure spreader. 2wd doesn't turn good when it's wet

There’s quite a few farmers in eastern Oregon who has multiple traction king series, sad to see most of them in the graveyard pile.
The Traction Kings were big sellers in the Palhouse. Great for this hills. I hope to get out that way to film someday.
What brand was the disc ripper that the 2470 was pulling?
It's a wilrich

First tractor was afraid to get dirty.
It was just fully restored this year. I don’t think it’s afraid to get dirty. It’s just shiny.
