  • Hey learners!
In this lesson, we'll learn what is a noun phrase. Not only will you learn what is a noun phrase but also you will be able to teach to others, after watching this video.
    What is a noun phrase?
A noun phrase is a phrase that acts as a noun in a sentence.
    What is a phrase?
A phrase is a group of words that does not have a subject-verb combination; that always misses either of the two.
Ways to form a noun phrase:
    1. Using pre-modifiers
    2. Using post-modifiers
    3. Using both pre and post modifiers
    1. Noun phrases using pre modifiers
We have three things in pre-modifiers:
    1. Determiners
    2. Numbers
    3. Adjectives
    • Determiners
Words that determine the quantity of a noun. These include the following:
    Articles
    ( a, an, the)
    Noun phrases-
A book, an apple, the Taj Mahal
    Possessive adjective
( my, your, his, her, their, our )
    Noun phrases-
My car, your sister, his mother
    Distributive adjectives
    ( this, that, these, those)
    Noun phrases-
This guy, that car, these people, those girls
    Quantifiers
(Some, many, a few, the few, a lot of, several etc )
Noun phrases- A lot of people, some friends, several leaders
    • Numbers
    one, two, first, second
    Noun phrases-
two girls, three dogs, the first match, my second love
    • Adjectives
    small, big, intelligent, round, lazy
    Noun phrases-
a big room, an intelligent person
    2. Noun phrases using post-modifiers
    1. Prepositional phrase
    Noun phrases-
    A girl with no tantrums.
The person in the black shirt.
    2. Gerund phrase
    Noun phrases-
The man standing next to you.
    The girl talking to you.
    3. Infinitive phrase
    Noun phrases-
    Students to teach English.
    Clothes to wear.
    4. Relative clause
    Noun phrases-
The man who gave me some money.
The book that you gifted me last week.
    3. Noun phrases using pre and post modifiers
The black dog that you have.
    Pre-modifiers:
    The (article)
    Black (adjective)
    Post modifier
    That you have (relative clause)
Like a noun, it can take the following 4 positions:
    1. Subject of the sentence
    2. Object of the sentence
    3. Object of the preposition
    4. Subject complement
    Examples:
(These boys) are my friends. (Subject)
I love (your younger sister.) (Object)
She is living in (a big house). (Object of the preposition "IN")
Nate is (my favourite fighter). (Subject complement)
    Hope it helps you!

Being an English teacher is something I am entitled with but when it is to talk about phrases, I really fail here badly.
It's difficult for me to identify different types of phrases especially when I appear for some competitive exams.
I tried searching for some explanatory videos several times but ended up with people like me.
This is the best one I must say which helped me to get into it much deeper.
    Thank you so much Ashish❤️

As far as I understand, the part that starts after "is" is the subject complement. Is it correct?

awesome! sir, I am your fan. sir in the sentence "the man standing next to you" you have said that standing acting as a gerund and sir gerund is a verbal that replaces the noun but here it is modifying a noun I think it should be a participle. sir, please clear this concept I always get in trouble whenever I have to separate noun or adjective in like these sentences. thanks

      Thank you! Means a lot!
Yes, that's a present participle, not a gerund. I made a mistake there.

Hi sir....ur teaching methodology is incredible. There's one point .....u r forming a noun phrase with relative clause ..... How can we make a phrase wd clause and sub verb combination

    • @EnglishWithAshish

A noun phrase is formed using a noun (headword) and its premodifiers and postmodifiers. Note that an adjective clause can function as a postmodifier in a noun phrase.

I've watched your other video on pre and post modifiers and you haven't included all of them. Are these the only types? Plus some of these pre and post modifiers that can form a noun clauses are not in the video i just mentioned, such as numbers as pre modifiers and gerund phrase phrases as post modifiers. Please explain this.
    Very good video!!!

Numbers is mentioned. Gerund phrases can't modify a noun; they work as nouns. Participles can; they are mentioned.

If you're referring to a noun in the past, use THAT instead of THIS.
Correct version: The book that I read last week....
