Public speaking arguably induces the most anxiety I have ever felt.. I literally felt axiety watching him forgetting his train of thought. Props to him for getting through it.
I watch this and I clench my fists in frustration because I've been saying this very thing to my family for YEARS but I live in a household averse to change or progress... I've been overweight all of my life and suffered through many years of bullying and mental anguish all because my parents resorted to buying junk food out of convenience. If you are a parent reading this PLEASE give your child the gift of healthy eating from an early age and save them from all their potential suffering

+kutabarekid Its not just that easy as he says ... People seriously did not know what the effect of junk food would be and the Tv certainly did not discourage it. Don't blame .... It keeps you in the same loop.... life is not 100% perfect ...parents aren't perfect. Love them for trying and for what they have given you. Eating is also choice and now u can make choices you can make wiser ones. There will probably be a time when you will be your parents minder - they will be lucky to have you making better choices for them than they did for themselves and you.

My parents knew full well what they were doing and continue to do it despite me and my younger brothers (who can't even do anything about it) constantly begging hem to stop.for both our sake and theirs. My father is diabetic and continues to eat garbage and I fear one day soon he may die from it. I had no choice as a kid, I do now but as for my brothers all I can do is try and ease their suffering by pitching in now and again. Sugar is addictive and rather than fighting their addiction they remorselessly subjected us to it and for that I cannot forgive them.
kutabarekid I hear you. And as a mother of 3, I agree with you. My kids can't buy the food. I control most of what they eat through the choices I make when I food shop. You may feel like you can't help your brothers now, but you can. They may not be able to eat healthy right now, but they will see your example. And hopefully follow in your footsteps. And maybe, your parents will see what healthy eating does for you and make better choices.
You can tell this one leads a healthy lifestyle. I won't judge his presentation skills. Everyone one here seems to feel superior enough to cast that stone. I do admire his courage. There something to be said for feeling the fear and doing it anyway even if the results are not what you hoped.

Aard Igni We changed to whole wheat spaghetti and now don't understand why we used to like the regular one, for there is so much more flavour. And then it IS healthy. You could also gradually add some more shortly baked veggies to it: onions, bell peppers and mushrooms are my favorites. I also chop up a tomato to really mix well with the sauce. And I cut down on the ground beef. Now my spaghetti is very healthy. To top it off, I eat some slices of cucumber with some of this well-filled sauce. Delicious!

the best part of his talk is he made me realize that its very important to raise kids who can support their siblings in such a powerful way. the world is not going to be a lonely place anymore. secondly he taught a lesson that this formula applies in every temptation. food, relationship, any kind of desire. throw it out for a certain time out of your mind and life and fill with something everlasting and see the results. good job buddy.

What a great brother and a positive influence. Good for him. He did a great job speaking as well...yes, he may have slipped up but speaking in front of that many people isn't easy. Also, the fact that he had a little trouble during his speech just shows how much of an art and skill public speaking is. He did a great job despite his nervousness.

Did anyone else like his style of presenting? He feels incredibly genuine and I thought his story was interesting and touching. I haven't seen any negative comments, only comments saying other people are critical and I'm willing to bet those "people" are people who prefer their excuses to learning how to change into the life they want to live.
Not everyone is so fortunate to have a nutritionists doing everything for them or to give an example, but I totally agree with your point that you have to change your lifestyle or environment

For people saying the idea is too simple, sometimes the obvious has to be pointed out and explained. It's a good reminder and prompt. You can look into all sorts of different mind tricks to help you eat more healthily but those could be criticised too when there's this much more basic potential solution!
I wish my family was healthier. After the age 11 I started to gain some weight and became overweight. Now at the age of 19 I am myself learning the proper way to eat. Nobody ever told me to eat less or better.
Same reason why americans come here to Italy and search for Bk or Mc's... Makes me angry, cause we have the helthier food in the world from light pizza ingredients and fresh pastas, they don't know it? No, they still want a "quality" burger... So yes, they poisoned you during these years (not your parents, but the U.S. unhealthy food society) they didn't tell you how to eat better and helthier, they should teach it in primary schools. I eat a lot ok, but a lot of good food, I am slightly overweight, sure that if I was there in U.S. I would be 100% obese. Cheers.
DavidVercettiMovies I'm actually originally from Latvia, but living in Ireland. Latvia is pretty healthy, when I moved to Ireland, fast food was more present in my life. I thought it was the best thing EVER because back at home fast food was more of a special occasion kind of a thing.
I don't blame you. The taste is good! I love going to fast-food sometimes. But not always... otherwise it's dangerous for you. Example: If you eat a whole grilled chicken, it has the same calories of an hamburger of mc donalds... But the hamburger, doesn't stuff you up like the chiken, so I usually order another one and fries and a milk-shake. So i've eaten 4 chickens at the end of the day, when one was enough... you know what I mean... ;)

you still have the option to say no. It's so so so so so hard, but whenever you think "oh I can have this or that, it wont hurt anything" replace that thought with "If i have this now, it will negatively affect everything that I've worked so hard for, it's not worth it".
He raised an excellent point: if your Plan A and your Plan B are both healthy choices, it is so much easier to eat well. I don't keep anything unhealthy in the house. I've been doing this for eight months and have lost over 40-lbs without counting calories. I just eat what's there: grape tomatoes instead of candy, oranges instead of ice cream, baked chicken instead of pizza, etc. If I don't buy it, if it's not in the house, then when I'm hungry, I'm going to have the mint tea and salad without even thinking about soda and chips. I went through a very difficult five-day detox period but since then the craving for unhealthful foods has dwindled to nothing. Right now I'm baking some chicken, carrots, mushrooms and onions seasoned with fresh herbs and my house smells wonderful. I don't even miss the white rice, white pasta, white potatoes, sugary drinks, bread, desserts, etc. that were killing me before. Real, whole foods low in starch and no added sugars. Nothing processed. Nothing with chemical additives. Nothing "manufactured". Nothing human bodies didn't evolve to handle very well.

+Madame Mayham I've dealt with the same problem, but i will say that detoxing for 3-7 days, took all of my cravings away. also, I didn't say, "for 3 days I'm only gonna eat raw foods and drink water," I just took it one day at a time, and looked at the progress of even one day as being great. After doing that detox and removing the cravings, i lost 85lbs in 7 months because i was able to stay on the changes i implemented in my life - which also have me tons of energy to exercise. no pills, no surgeries. when i saw that i hadn't lost anything, i didnt get discouraged. it's all about consistency. stay consisyent and vigilant and don't be too hard on yourself! give yourself one day out of the week to eat one thing you truly enjoy that could be considered, "junk food" after a while, you don't even want it anymore!! trust me, it really works and I've kept the weight off!! good luck on your journey ;-)
+Truth Sets Us Free I totally agree. Losing 40 pounds may not sound like a lot to most people, but his ideas are way easier to maintain in the long run. I don't think diets work too well because a lot of them make people get tired of resisting the unhealthy foods, and eventually people go back to eating unhealthy. Working out does work, but for many people it has the same effect; it gets tiring. I've also been doing what he suggested without realizing it, and i have forgotten most of my cravings for soda and desert every night. I never thought I would see the day, but I don't really care that much about soda or junk food anymore. That's why I believe it's long term; it gets you to forget about old habits instead of yearning for them.
I don't get why people always describe white potatoes as unhealthy... I mean it grows from the earth like this, there is no kind of "processing"... Same with white rice, Japense eat it and they're one of the healthiest population on earth. What it's wrong with the white potatoes it's French fries... And then if you eat 1kg of rice or potatoes per day, this can lead to weight gain...
xDiananas i can totally relate to this comment. White potatoes are good for you, but they naturally have a higher glycemic index, which causes your blood sugar to spike, messes with your insulin, and then, the cravings come. Also, the preparation can be a problem. Roasting or steaming with a little olive oil and sea salt is of course much better than frying or covering them in bacon, sour cream, and cheese. As for the rice, i think it really depends on your overall diet and what you're pairing the rice with. As for most Japanese dishes, i know they eat a lot more fish, veggies, and drink green tea. In fact, they're protein intake is considerably less than a typical American dish. Also, they're lifestyles are typically less sedentary. As long as you eat these things in moderation and stay active, it shouldn't be a problem. There's no way that I can just not eat jasmine rice! lol, or have a baked potato every now and then. Usually, when i eat white rice or potatoes, I pair it up with a lot of green veggies :-)

To all of the people saying that this isn't TED material, who are you to decide that? I was 250lbs and extremely overweight at age 14 and was going down a terrible path in life. This story is what made me wake the fuck up, get off my ass, eat healthier and lose the weight. Two years later and I am 160lbs and so damn thankful for this TED talk. Every TED talk has something you can take from it. If you don't feel like it's worth watching, DON'T WATCH IT.
I love TED talks, not just because of the content but because it's by "normal" people who get up and share what they've learnt, even if they're nervous. I dont like a lot of TV because we're spectators, but on youtube we're taking part, and it's only when we're all making a change that the world will change.
I kind of disagree that most TED Talks are by "normal" people. Most of the ones I've seen are by experts in their fields, which is why I like them so much. I want to know the most recent research findings and the innovations occurring possibly before papers can be published. They are also very succinct, which I think our modern brains appreciate. Most talks are novel and research based, so I feel I can rely on the information most of the time. This particular talk I found remarkable because it was someone who knows a little bit about his subject, but he had little novel to add to the discussion. I'm a little surprised he was granted time for this talk. It was okay, and the information was sound, but I found it a bit thin on content. Nice story, though, and undoubtedly a nice bloke.
This is SOOO true. Environment is everything. How can you expect people, especially kids, to eat healthy when they are constantly surrounded with unhealthy foods? The way our society is structured obviously doesn't help, but conscious adults can make the decision to invest in healthier choices for both themselves and their kids. Vote with your dollar and invest in your health!!!
Idk if that was a joke but I don't think hitting children is the best idea. Having a volatile authority figure as a child who rewarded me one minute and then punished me the next certainly fucked me up enough for me to know that's not how I want to raise my kids.
One of the biggest problems is self love. Once we really start to love ourselves, we can then appreciate what good health can do for us. Many people dont have time for self love because they are taking care of others. It happens all over the world. Take time for yourself because it matters.
We are all human and should support one another especially when were doing good for humanity. The fact that he had even just courage to get up and do this is something amazing. He made change in someones life because he cared. I have panic disorder and I hope to one day have courage to get up and make speech one day. Great job
kimberly grove I agree with you. I have also panic attack disorder since few years. And usually having this means you are a sensitive person. I encourage you to join the toast masters clubs in your city to get over public speaking fear and anxieties. Remember that panic attacks are accumulations to continues stress that is either physically sensed or not. So my advice is avoid stress and perform the stress releasing exercises and also meditation is very good. Also you need to set your priorities right and set goals for your life that has meaning to you and do not put anyone else ahead of you as sometimes feelings drive us to impersonate others and forget about our own needs and priorities. Introduce your little brother by name at the beginning of your presentation so you can refer to him by name throughout instead of continually referring to him as your little brother. He's so cute, so nervous, honestly if anyone smack talks this I'd like to see you memorize an entire speech and reiterate that to an audience and camera.
As a nutrition major, I noticed that a key role is getting back to the basics and keeping it simple. Example: Leptin is a hormone that is released when you are full and satisfied. Many of us notice this feeling and choose to keep eating until we practically hate ourselves. It begins in children when parents force them to finish all of their food despite the fact that they have met their own personal energy requirements. Honestly, losing weight can be as simple as to stop eating when you are full. Little changes lead to dramatic lifelong changes. People may complain that a video so obvious may simple, but are often willing to spend thousands of dollars and deprive themselves of proper nutrition to have a quick fix for a month and go back to their miserable lives.

Animal Lover Like me you're Canadian, and because you're still living there, the Canadian accent is neutral to you. I'm a Canuck too but have lived in California for nearly 20 years. When I talk to Canadian friends on the phone their Canadian accent jumps out at me. (In a nice way.) Not just how "out" and "about" are pronounced but also harder consonants and clearer enunciation of syllables. America-speak is a tiny bit more relaxed, almost slightly slurred, with vowels drawn out just a tiny bit. It's like armed forces marching styles: British are stiff and formal; Americans are more casual, almost walking. There's no better or worse but I can "pass" as American now when I want to. Talking that is, not marching.

The first half of the speech this guy explained how heroic it was for him to cook for his brother. He looked like he waited for long ovations. Yes, he had crutches, but often women cooking for their families everyday have all kinds of health problems, sometimes new pregnancies, and always much more things to care about apart from just cooking. There's nothing to be proud of.
I started something similar on my last birthday, my gift to myself was a half-mile run and six-pack abs by the next year. Getting rid of "trigger foods" isn't easy when you live with other people who don't share your drive to be healthy, I'll say that to start and give my piece of advice. Ask yourself how badly you want that food you're looking at, it could be a slice of cake, a cookie, chips, pizza, whatever, ask yourself how badly you want it. Do you want it more than walking an extra half-mile on a treadmill or an extra mile of biking, maybe just a simple 4 minutes of cardio? Or, if you don't want to motivate yourself with work: How badly do you want to be healthy? Is that glass of soda going to help you? No, get a glass of water, you'll feel much better for it. I know I'm a bit of an anomaly because I love vegetables, not a fan of fruit for whatever odd reason, but a good salad(seriously, like lettuce, shredded red cabbage, broccoli, some cheese, and some light dressing), broccoli, corn, carrots, to a lesser extent: celery, I love that stuff, I eat it daily. But a lot of people don't like that so I'll make some suggestions and nutritional information as to why. Stay away from carbs, first and foremost, there are three energy-providing molecules the human body can break down for use and those are(in increasing order of energy density) Fats, Proteins, and Carbs. Fats are complex and hard to break down, they take more energy than any other energy-providing, in other words: netting the least energy gain. Proteins are next, the amino-acid chains which make up proteins are rather easy for the body to break down, but get used by the body quickly to prevent muscle atrophy, the building of new muscle, and it's cellular uses. Last are carbohydrates or "carbs" and they are the easiest to break down, therefore providing the most energy per gram intake. Carbs, at least in America, are almost always the bad varieties(simple carbs) which are found in white bread, white rice, sugar, among other things. The healthy (complex) carbs are harder to break down and include whole grains, fiber, vegetables, nuts, beans, and so on. Part of the benefit to Fats being so hard to break down is that they stay in the intestines longer, making you feel full for longer. And most fats are healthy, if you are American you've probably been told that Fats are bad for you, but only Saturated Fats and Trans Fats which lead to cardiovascular diseases, heart attacks, strokes, artery blockages(plaque), etc. Healthy fats in meat(especially in fish), nuts, and some plant oils(those which are liquid at room temperature) are good for the body. The Amino fatty acids in fish are great for the brain, which is primarily fat and water, and making fat more favorable. Simple carbs are bad for the body in general, not just in terms of weight; You can look up diabetes type 3 for more but I'll suffice it to say that they are inflammatory, attack the fats in the body(including the brain, possibly leading to Alzheimer's), and make insulin less effective. With most of that out of the way: Eat every 3 hours. I'm sure most people have heard the "starvation mode" line but here's what it really does: keeps your metabolism constant(it's true), keeps you from over-eating, keeps you from making bad decisions on what to eat, and generally gives you more energy. It takes time to prepare meals, but you can take a few hours out of your Saturday or Sunday to prepare your week's meals while listening to something in the background, and that way you only have to do that day's dishes, and then it's just the odd plate and utensils for the rest of the week. You don't even need to make them all, a granola bar in the morning is what I do, if you want to make homemade granola, that's fine too. Everything you eat doesn't have to be homemade as long as it's healthy. Schedule some time to do cardio, 20 minutes of cardio a night even without diet change will help you lose weight. Ride a bike, go for a walk/jog/run, elliptical, whatever you have access to. You don't *need* weights to work out, push-ups, sit-ups, crunches, dips, squats, lunges, and way more you don't need anything but your body to do. It really is easy to lose weight if you want to. I lost 30lbs of fat in 5 months doing this, and I was just barely out of shape then, now I have around 10% body fat(Athletic) so... it takes time and effort, but not much more.

That is interesting, but it's a far stretch to even begin to compare them to trans-fats in my opinion. As with many things, moderation is a good starting point. I do agree though that monosaturated seems to be the best choice, but saturated fat has its uses (cooking) and shouldn't be feared as much as it has been in the past.
I agree with everything you're saying except that carbohydrates provide the most energy per gram. Carbohydrates and protein provide approximately 4 calories per gram whereas fats provide 9 calories per gram. Also eating a treat food occasionally is much better than depriving yourself and ending up scoffing a lot of the food later (which is quite common).
Janine Lawton Yeah, I did some research after Luke corrected me, my information source must have mixed them up but anyway. As for depriving myself, I'm not depriving myself of anything, really, if I want to drink a soda, I'll drink a soda, I just don't want to, if I want a bowl of ice cream, I'll eat a bowl of ice cream, but I don't want a bowl of ice cream. As I said in my post: I'm a bit of an anomaly because I enjoy healthy food, I eat salad frequently, I have some fruit or vegetable every time I eat(or as much as I can), and that's what I like. My snack of choice is trail mix, mixed nuts, or fruit and that's what I like. "Unhealthy food" still tastes good, but I don't want it for a few reasons, chiefly being that I physically feel bad after eating it. If I ate chips, I get bloated because of all the salt, if I have something with a lot of sugar it slows me down, I just don't feel good when I eat food loaded with salt or sugar. I allow myself a cookie if I want it, I just don't go for desert at the buffet or anything. I'm also, by no means, saying what I'm doing *will* work for anybody else, I'm saying it's possible.
In conclusion, if there is nothing else to eat but healthy food, you'll eat it... not an amazing revelation. Not everyone can have a brother to force him into eating healthy, and most adults don't have the patience or time to do it for them selves. The problem with healthy food alternatives, is that they are usually more expensive and take too much time to prepare just so it's eatable. It's easier to fix something up or just order-in.
AKnime YT is a great place to learn new ways to cook and prep fruits and veggies. sure every once in a while you got to mix it up, but it is amazing all the healthy dishes are out there

Environment control certainly helps and its a great place to start but thinking bigger is more motivating than weight loss. Taking a look at our thinking behind eating in general is best for continuous results. It's a journey just like everything else worthwhile. Many people can't justify loosing weight if they feel deprived- yo yo dieting then becomes normal.

This strategy did work for me when I lived alone, but when I moved in with my dad (I switched schools and his place was close) he brought home pizza and mcdonalds at least once a week. It's really hard to not eat it when it's right there waiting for you, and making a healthy meal could take half an hour or more.
When I study or read I break them down to 20 or 30 minutes sessions or blocks, I take 10 minutes breaks after each session,so I used the 10 minutes breaks to get my meals ready, for example, chopping vegetables and letting stuff soak in water. however, if your family bring home an already made meal then that plan go out the door. We all must remember to exercise daily and eat healthy, also, check the ingredients of everything before you buy it.
Once a week is nothing.You are more likely to gain weight from stressing out about eating it than eating it. In fact, I just read a plan someone follows that is a lot like what I was doing, at one point of my time experimenting with how to eat: he eats mostly vegetables, mostly raw or only very lightly sauteed, and, then, some lean meat and a little spices for five days a week. No fruit, no grains, no processed. Then, one day a week he eats nothing. And, the other day a week he eats whatever he wants. And, all of this is in two meals, within an 8 hour window of time, so his food is very well digested. One time, I lost weight simply by adding vegetables and water. Like, I would have a turkey sandwich, with lots of meat, but, also tomatoes and slices of cucumber, with a half a grapefruit and maybe a spinach salad on the side. Mayo was involved. For dessert, if I had any, I would have a small and incredibly rich chocolate truffle (1/2 - 1) and a lemon cookie, which was just the Kroger's brand but it was really good. Because, those two things, in that combination, when eaten slowly, and enjoyed for their aroma, were so satisfying that I didn't want anything else. And, trust you, me, most of the time eating a little sugar makes me want to eat all the rest of it, too. Eating slowly is very important. Mindfulness. Appreciation of what you have and how good it tastes. For two reasons. One, because it makes you feel more satisfied, sometimes while eating a lot less. Two, because, sometimes, you realize that what you are eating ONLY tastes good when swallowed quickly whereas other things you used to not enjoy so much are bursting with flavor and a pleasure to chew. Oh, and, if the person I commented to, below, is reading this: That is part of what I meant about stress. Stress tends to make me eat faster (as well as stupider choices), which means less enjoyment, which means more wanting of more.
I wish there were more people like this good big brother. Once we really start to love ourselves . We can then appreciate what good health can do for us.
I am a plant based health food reformer, we "veganize" all the old unhealthy American foods we used to love. I make most everything from scratch, soy sauce, butter, plant based ranch salad dressing ect ...make other "vegan meals" as well. It takes time to adjust the tastebuds but it is well worth it. In just 2 yrs, at 50 yrs old, I feel much better than ever and with a low thyroid. Am NOT taking the pharmacy junk med for low thyroid anymore but all natural medicines and feel so much better than when on the pharmacy chemical junk with a junk food diet. Now I do not have to worry about clogged arteries from meat and cheese.... In time we will enjoy the healthy foods more and more and add to the list more of our favorite very tasty meals that we love!! No animals were tortured for our tastebuds and plates of food. It is a WIN WIN!!!

Just this week I saw another RUclips video in which a doctor explained that with 7 servings of fruits, nuts and veggies per day you can eliminate asthma in most people, that made me decide to support my wife who has the debilitating and dangerous disease. Not entirely unselfish: I keep hearing from people who stick to that kind of diet how much more energetic they are. How to make the switch to that better diet, though? That is why I love this video and RUclips. I'm going to invest a little into filling my fridge and pantry with wholesome, delicious, fresh foods - if available and affordable: local and organic - and everything else just won't be there anymore. Best thing I ever did was get off all sugar (including high fructose corn syrup and sugar substitutes), gluten and corn. I mostly only eat fruits and vegetables, partly as smoothies. I also eat roasted meats and only drink water. I can eat all I want if I stick to those foods.
I've definitely felt happier. Everything about food is easier. Cutting out gluten also made food a pleasure instead of a task master. Really, it was eliminating both sugar and gluten that helped me the most. As for the sugar, (I cut it out a year before gluten) the cravings for sweets stopped. I stopped retaining water. My body aches and pains reduced quite a bit. And my body shape changed from that "junk food" shape to what I think is the real, normal shape. My waist on my blue jeans fit better, etc... Weight loss happened over time, but I wasn't trying that hard. It still happened. What I really like is that my day is not dictated by sudden cravings to eat. I eat when I am hungry. And the hunger is not that deep unhappy kind of hunger. It's normal hunger where I stop and think about what might taste good. I can go to the fridge to make a soup because it seems like a nice idea. I can put off eating for a while and be fine.
Oliver Christensen I do not believe only 1% is allergic to gluten. I've read a lot about gluten and that was after I quit. My daughter stopped eating gluten and suggest I try. So I did and my arthritis almost completely disappeared. I know if I have accidentally eaten gluten because when I wake up my whole body hurts. My hands hurt where I had arthritis. My back hurts. Then I investigate and figure out I accidentally ate gluten. I read up on gluten and I believe wheat has been bred and processed to make better selling bread over at least two centuries. The wheat of the ancient world is not like the wheat we use today. It produced less glutenous bread. It sounds like you have decided only 1% are allergic.

I watch this and I clench my fists in frustration because I've been saying this very thing to my family for YEARS but I live in a household averse to change or progress... I've been overweight all of my life and suffered through many years of bullying and mental anguish all because my parents resorted to buying junk food out of convenience. My parents knew full well what they were doing and continue to do it despite me and my younger brothers (who can't even do anything about it) constantly begging hem to stop.for both our sake and theirs. My father is diabetic and continues to eat garbage and I fear one day soon he may die from it. I had no choice as a kid, I do now but as for my brothers all I can do is try and ease their suffering by pitching in now and again. Sugar is addictive and rather than fighting their addiction they remorselessly subjected us to it and for that I cannot forgive them.

You may feel like you can't help your brothers now, but you can. They may not be able to eat healthy right now, but they will see your example. And hopefully follow in your footsteps. Aard Igni We changed to whole wheat spaghetti and now don't understand why we used to like the regular one, for there is so much more flavour. And then it IS healthy. You could also gradually add some more shortly baked veggies to it: onions, bell peppers and mushrooms are my favorites. I also chop up a tomato to really mix well with the sauce. And I cut down on the ground beef. Now my spaghetti is very healthy. To top it off, I eat some slices of cucumber with some of this well-filled sauce. Delicious!

What a great brother and a positive influence. Good for him. He did a great job speaking as well...yes, he may have slipped up but speaking in front of that many people isn't easy. Did anyone else like his style of presenting? He feels incredibly genuine and I thought his story was interesting and touching. I haven't seen any negative comments, only comments saying other people are critical and I'm willing to bet those "people" are people who prefer their excuses to learning how to change into the life they want to live.

For people saying the idea is too simple, sometimes the obvious has to be pointed out and explained. It's a good reminder and prompt. You can look into all sorts of different mind tricks to help you eat more healthily but those could be criticised too when there's this much more basic potential solution!
I wish my family was healthier. After the age 11 I started to gain some weight and became overweight. Now at the age of 19 I am myself learning the proper way to eat. Nobody ever told me to eat less or better.
Same reason why americans come here to Italy and search for Bk or Mc's... Makes me angry, cause we have the helthier food in the world from light pizza ingredients and fresh pastas, they don't know it? No, they still want a "quality" burger... So yes, they poisoned you during these years (not your parents, but the U.S. unhealthy food society) they didn't tell you how to eat better and helthier, they should teach it in primary schools. I eat a lot ok, but a lot of good food, I am slightly overweight, sure that if I was there in U.S. I would be 100% obese. Cheers.

I don't blame you. The taste is good! I love going to fast-food sometimes. But not always... otherwise it's dangerous for you. Example: If you eat a whole grilled chicken, it has the same calories of an hamburger of mc donalds... But the hamburger, doesn't stuff you up like the chiken, so I usually order another one and fries and a milk-shake. So i've eaten 4 chickens at the end of the day, when one was enough... you know what I mean... ;)

you still have the option to say no. It's so so so so so hard, but whenever you think "oh I can have this or that, it wont hurt anything" replace that thought with "If i have this now, it will negatively affect everything that I've worked so hard for, it's not worth it".
He raised an excellent point: if your Plan A and your Plan B are both healthy choices, it is so much easier to eat well. I don't keep anything unhealthy in the house. I've been doing this for eight months and have lost over 40-lbs without counting calories. I just eat what's there: grape tomatoes instead of candy, oranges instead of ice cream, baked chicken instead of pizza, etc. If I don't buy it, if it's not in the house, then when I'm hungry, I'm going to have the mint tea and salad without even thinking about soda and chips. I went through a very difficult five-day detox period but since then the craving for unhealthful foods has dwindled to nothing.
Right now I'm baking some chicken, carrots, mushrooms and onions seasoned with fresh herbs and my house smells wonderful. I don't even miss the white rice, white pasta, white potatoes, sugary drinks, bread, desserts, etc. that were killing me before. Real, whole foods low in starch and no added sugars. Nothing processed. Nothing with chemical additives. Nothing "manufactured". Nothing human bodies didn't evolve to handle very well.
+Truth Sets Us Free I wish I had the strength that you have. When I crave food, and I don't eat, I feel like I REALLY need to eat, but I'm not hungry. I try to fight it off, but my craving for junk food keeps getting stronger. I end up giving in, and over eat. Then I have feelings of regret.
+Madame Mayham I've dealt with the same problem, but i will say that detoxing for 3-7 days, took all of my cravings away. also, I didn't say, "for 3 days I'm only gonna eat raw foods and drink water," I just took it one day at a time, and looked at the progress of even one day as being great. After doing that detox and removing the cravings, i lost 85lbs in 7 months because i was able to stay on the changes i implemented in my life - which also have me tons of energy to exercise. no pills, no surgeries. when i saw that i hadn't lost anything, i didnt get discouraged. it's all about consistency. stay consisyent and vigilant and don't be too hard on yourself! give yourself one day out of the week to eat one thing you truly enjoy that could be considered, "junk food" after a while, you don't even want it anymore!! trust me, it really works and I've kept the weight off!! good luck on your journey ;-)
+Truth Sets Us Free I totally agree. Losing 40 pounds may not sound like a lot to most people, but his ideas are way easier to maintain in the long run. I don't think diets work too well because a lot of them make people get tired of resisting the unhealthy foods, and eventually people go back to eating unhealthy. Working out does work, but for many people it has the same effect; it gets tiring. I've also been doing what he suggested without realizing it, and i have forgotten most of my cravings for soda and desert every night. I never thought I would see the day, but I don't really care that much about soda or junk food anymore. That's why I believe it's long term; it gets you to forget about old habits instead of yearning for them.
I don't get why people always describe white potatoes as unhealthy... I mean it grows from the earth like this, there is no kind of "processing"... Same with white rice, Japense eat it and they're one of the healthiest population on earth. What it's wrong with the white potatoes it's French fries... And then if you eat 1kg of rice or potatoes per day, this can lead to weight gain...
xDiananas i can totally relate to this comment. White potatoes are good for you, but they naturally have a higher glycemic index, which causes your blood sugar to spike, messes with your insulin, and then, the cravings come. Also, the preparation can be a problem. Roasting or steaming with a little olive oil and sea salt is of course much better than frying or covering them in bacon, sour cream, and cheese. As for the rice, i think it really depends on your overall diet and what you're pairing the rice with. As for most Japanese dishes, i know they eat a lot more fish, veggies, and drink green tea. In fact, they're protein intake is considerably less than a typical American dish. Also, they're lifestyles are typically less sedentary. As long as you eat these things in moderation and stay active, it shouldn't be a problem. There's no way that I can just not eat jasmine rice! lol, or have a baked potato every now and then. Usually, when i eat white rice or potatoes, I pair it up with a lot of green veggies :-)

To all of the people saying that this isn't TED material, who are you to decide that? I was 250lbs and extremely overweight at age 14 and was going down a terrible path in life. This story is what made me wake the fuck up, get off my ass, eat healthier and lose the weight. Two years later and I am 160lbs and so damn thankful for this TED talk. Every TED talk has something you can take from it. If you don't feel like it's worth watching, DON'T WATCH IT.

I love TED talks, not just because of the content but because it's by "normal" people who get up and share what they've learnt, even if they're nervous. I dont like a lot of TV because we're spectators, but on youtube we're taking part, and it's only when we're all making a change that the world will change.
I kind of disagree that most TED Talks are by "normal" people. Most of the ones I've seen are by experts in their fields, which is why I like them so much. I want to know the most recent research findings and the innovations occurring possibly before papers can be published. They are also very succinct, which I think our modern brains appreciate. Most talks are novel and research based, so I feel I can rely on the information most of the time. This particular talk I found remarkable because it was someone who knows a little bit about his subject, but he had little novel to add to the discussion. I'm a little surprised he was granted time for this talk. It was okay, and the information was sound, but I found it a bit thin on content. Nice story, though, and undoubtedly a nice bloke.
This is SOOO true. Environment is everything. How can you expect people, especially kids, to eat healthy when they are constantly surrounded with unhealthy foods? The way our society is structured obviously doesn't help, but conscious adults can make the decision to invest in healthier choices for both themselves and their kids. Vote with your dollar and invest in your health!!!
Idk if that was a joke but I don't think hitting children is the best idea. Having a volatile authority figure as a child who rewarded me one minute and then punished me the next certainly fucked me up enough for me to know that's not how I want to raise my kids.

One of the biggest problems is self love. Once we really start to love ourselves, we can then appreciate what good health can do for us. Many people dont have time for self love because they are taking care of others. It happens all over the world. Take time for yourself because it matters.
We are all human and should support one another especially when were doing good for humanity. The fact that he had even just courage to get up and do this is something amazing. He made change in someones life because he cared. I have panic disorder and I hope to one day have courage to get up and make speech one day. Great job

kimberly grove I agree with you. I have also panic attack disorder since few years. And usually having this means you are a sensitive person. I encourage you to join the toast masters clubs in your city to get over public speaking fear and anxieties. Remember that panic attacks are accumulations to continues stress that is either physically sensed or not. So my advice is avoid stress and perform the stress releasing exercises and also meditation is very good. Also you need to set your priorities right and set goals for your life that has meaning to you and do not put anyone else ahead of you as sometimes feelings drive us to impersonate others and forget about our own needs and priorities.

As a nutrition major, I noticed that a key role is getting back to the basics and keeping it simple. Example: Leptin is a hormone that is released when you are full and satisfied. Many of us notice this feeling and choose to keep eating until we practically hate ourselves. It begins in children when parents force them to finish all of their food despite the fact that they have met their own personal energy requirements. Honestly, losing weight can be as simple as to stop eating when you are full. Little changes lead to dramatic lifelong changes.
People may complain that a video so obvious may simple, but are often willing to spend thousands of dollars and deprive themselves of proper nutrition to have a quick fix for a month and go back to their miserable lives.

I'm a Canuck too but have lived in California for nearly 20 years. When I talk to Canadian friends on the phone their Canadian accent jumps out at me. (In a nice way.) Not just how "out" and "about" are pronounced but also harder consonants and clearer enunciation of syllables.
America-speak is a tiny bit more relaxed, almost slightly slurred, with vowels drawn out just a tiny bit. It's like armed forces marching styles: British are stiff and formal; Americans are more casual, almost walking.
There's no better or worse but I can "pass" as American now when I want to. Talking that is, not marching.

The first half of the speech this guy explained how heroic it was for him to cook for his brother. He looked like he waited for long ovations. Yes, he had crutches, but often women cooking for their families everyday have all kinds of health problems, sometimes new pregnancies, and always much more things to care about apart from just cooking. There's nothing to be proud of.

I started something similar on my last birthday, my gift to myself was a half-mile run and six-pack abs by the next year. Getting rid of "trigger foods" isn't easy when you live with other people who don't share your drive to be healthy, I'll say that to start and give my piece of advice. Ask yourself how badly you want that food you're looking at, it could be a slice of cake, a cookie, chips, pizza, whatever, ask yourself how badly you want it. Do you want it more than walking an extra half-mile on a treadmill or an extra mile of biking, maybe just a simple 4 minutes of cardio? Or, if you don't want to motivate yourself with work: How badly do you want to be healthy? Is that glass of soda going to help you? No, get a glass of water, you'll feel much better for it.
I know I'm a bit of an anomaly because I love vegetables, not a fan of fruit for whatever odd reason, but a good salad(seriously, like lettuce, shredded red cabbage, broccoli, some cheese, and some light dressing), broccoli, corn, carrots, to a lesser extent: celery, I love that stuff, I eat it daily. But a lot of people don't like that so I'll make some suggestions and nutritional information as to why. Stay away from carbs, first and foremost, there are three energy-providing molecules the human body can break down for use and those are(in increasing order of energy density) Fats, Proteins, and Carbs. Fats are complex and hard to break down, they take more energy than any other energy-providing, in other words: netting the least energy gain. Proteins are next, the amino-acid chains which make up proteins are rather easy for the body to break down, but get used by the body quickly to prevent muscle atrophy, the building of new muscle, and it's cellular uses. Last are carbohydrates or "carbs" and they are the easiest to break down, therefore providing the most energy per gram intake. Carbs, at least in America, are almost always the bad varieties(simple carbs) which are found in white bread, white rice, sugar, among other things. The healthy (complex) carbs are harder to break down and include whole grains, fiber, vegetables, nuts, beans, and so on.
Part of the benefit to Fats being so hard to break down is that they stay in the intestines longer, making you feel full for longer. And most fats are healthy, if you are American you've probably been told that Fats are bad for you, but only Saturated Fats and Trans Fats which lead to cardiovascular diseases, heart attacks, strokes, artery blockages(plaque), etc. Healthy fats in meat(especially in fish), nuts, and some plant oils(those which are liquid at room temperature) are good for the body. The Amino fatty acids in fish are great for the brain, which is primarily fat and water, and making fat more favorable. Simple carbs are bad for the body in general, not just in terms of weight; You can look up diabetes type 3 for more but I'll suffice it to say that they are inflammatory, attack the fats in the body(including the brain, possibly leading to Alzheimer's), and make insulin less effective.
With most of that out of the way: Eat every 3 hours. I'm sure most people have heard the "starvation mode" line but here's what it really does: keeps your metabolism constant(it's true), keeps you from over-eating, keeps you from making bad decisions on what to eat, and generally gives you more energy. It takes time to prepare meals, but you can take a few hours out of your Saturday or Sunday to prepare your week's meals while listening to something in the background, and that way you only have to do that day's dishes, and then it's just the odd plate and utensils for the rest of the week. You don't even need to make them all, a granola bar in the morning is what I do, if you want to make homemade granola, that's fine too. Everything you eat doesn't have to be homemade as long as it's healthy.
Schedule some time to do cardio, 20 minutes of cardio a night even without diet change will help you lose weight. Ride a bike, go for a walk/jog/run, elliptical, whatever you have access to. You don't *need* weights to work out, push-ups, sit-ups, crunches, dips, squats, lunges, and way more you don't need anything but your body to do. It really is easy to lose weight if you want to.
I lost 30lbs of fat in 5 months doing this, and I was just barely out of shape then, now I have around 10% body fat(Athletic) so... it takes time and effort, but not much more.

That is interesting, but it's a far stretch to even begin to compare them to trans-fats in my opinion. As with many things, moderation is a good starting point. I do agree though that monosaturated seems to be the best choice, but saturated fat has its uses (cooking) and shouldn't be feared as much as it has been in the past.
I agree with everything you're saying except that carbohydrates provide the most energy per gram. Carbohydrates and protein provide approximately 4 calories per gram whereas fats provide 9 calories per gram. Also eating a treat food occasionally is much better than depriving yourself and ending up scoffing a lot of the food later (which is quite common).
Janine Lawton Yeah, I did some research after Luke corrected me, my information source must have mixed them up but anyway. As for depriving myself, I'm not depriving myself of anything, really, if I want to drink a soda, I'll drink a soda, I just don't want to, if I want a bowl of ice cream, I'll eat a bowl of ice cream, but I don't want a bowl of ice cream.
As I said in my post: I'm a bit of an anomaly because I enjoy healthy food, I eat salad frequently, I have some fruit or vegetable every time I eat(or as much as I can), and that's what I like. My snack of choice is trail mix, mixed nuts, or fruit and that's what I like. "Unhealthy food" still tastes good, but I don't want it for a few reasons, chiefly being that I physically feel bad after eating it. If I ate chips, I get bloated because of all the salt, if I have something with a lot of sugar it slows me down, I just don't feel good when I eat food loaded with salt or sugar. I allow myself a cookie if I want it, I just don't go for desert at the buffet or anything.
I'm also, by no means, saying what I'm doing *will* work for anybody else, I'm saying it's possible.
In conclusion, if there is nothing else to eat but healthy food, you'll eat it... not an amazing revelation. Not everyone can have a brother to force him into eating healthy, and most adults don't have the patience or time to do it for them selves.
The problem with healthy food alternatives, is that they are usually more expensive and take too much time to prepare just so it's eatable. It's easier to fix something up or just order-in.

And the best part, like LUKE says - when you have only this kinda GOOD FUEL around AND eat a bit every couple hours, our bodies simply 'readjust' to our proper weight, naturally. Environment control certainly helps and its a great place to start but thinking bigger is more motivating than weight loss. Taking a look at our thinking behind eating in general is best for continuous results. It's a journey just like everything else worthwhile. Many people can't justify loosing weight if they feel deprived- yo yo dieting then becomes normal.

This strategy did work for me when I lived alone, but when I moved in with my dad (I switched schools and his place was close) he brought home pizza and mcdonalds at least once a week. It's really hard to not eat it when it's right there waiting for you, and making a healthy meal could take half an hour or more.

Yep, living with people who eat crappy food is the easiest way to gain weight and the hardest way to lose. It sucks.
When I study or read I break them down to 20 or 30 minutes sessions or blocks, I take 10 minutes breaks after each session,so I used the 10 minutes breaks to get my meals ready, for example, chopping vegetables and letting stuff soak in water. however, if your family bring home an already made meal then that plan go out the door.
We all must remember to exercise daily and eat healthy, also, check the ingredients of everything before you buy it.
Once a week is nothing.You are more likely to gain weight from stressing out about eating it than eating it.
In fact, I just read a plan someone follows that is a lot like what I was doing, at one point of my time experimenting with how to eat: he eats mostly vegetables, mostly raw or only very lightly sauteed, and, then, some lean meat and a little spices for five days a week. No fruit, no grains, no processed. Then, one day a week he eats nothing. And, the other day a week he eats whatever he wants. And, all of this is in two meals, within an 8 hour window of time, so his food is very well digested.
One time, I lost weight simply by adding vegetables and water. Like, I would have a turkey sandwich, with lots of meat, but, also tomatoes and slices of cucumber, with a half a grapefruit and maybe a spinach salad on the side. Mayo was involved. For dessert, if I had any, I would have a small and incredibly rich chocolate truffle (1/2 - 1) and a lemon cookie, which was just the Kroger's brand but it was really good. Because, those two things, in that combination, when eaten slowly, and enjoyed for their aroma, were so satisfying that I didn't want anything else. And, trust you, me, most of the time eating a little sugar makes me want to eat all the rest of it, too.
Eating slowly is very important. Mindfulness. Appreciation of what you have and how good it tastes. For two reasons. One, because it makes you feel more satisfied, sometimes while eating a lot less. Two, because, sometimes, you realize that what you are eating ONLY tastes good when swallowed quickly whereas other things you used to not enjoy so much are bursting with flavor and a pleasure to chew.
Oh, and, if the person I commented to, below, is reading this: That is part of what I meant about stress. Stress tends to make me eat faster (as well as stupider choices), which means less enjoyment, which means more wanting of more.
At that age, the 11 year old probably idolized his big brother so they were able to accomplish their mission. I'm happy for them both.

Once we really start to love ourselves . We can then appreciate what good health can do for us.
I am a plant based health food reformer, we "veganize" all the old unhealthy American foods we used to love. I make most everything from scratch, soy sauce, butter, plant based ranch salad dressing ect ...make other "vegan meals" as well. It takes time to adjust the tastebuds but it is well worth it. In just 2 yrs, at 50 yrs old, I feel much better than ever and with a low thyroid. Am NOT taking the pharmacy junk med for low thyroid anymore but all natural medicines and feel so much better than when on the pharmacy chemical junk with a junk food diet.
Now I do not have to worry about clogged arteries from meat and cheese....
In time we will enjoy the healthy foods more and more and add to the list more of our favorite very tasty meals that we love!!
No animals were tortured for our tastebuds and plates of food.

Just this week I saw another RUclips video in which a doctor explained that with 7 servings of fruits, nuts and veggies per day you can eliminate asthma in most people, that made me decide to support my wife who has the debilitating and dangerous disease. Not entirely unselfish: I keep hearing from people who stick to that kind of diet how much more energetic they are. How to make the switch to that better diet, though? That is why I love this video and RUclips. I'm going to invest a little into filling my fridge and pantry with wholesome, delicious, fresh foods - if available and affordable: local and organic - and everything else just won't be there anymore. The internet will help me find ways to make delicious meals and heatly snacks. It's going to be tough for little while, but the summer is ahead of us - what better time to make that change?

Best thing I ever did was get off all sugar (including high fructose corn syrup and sugar substitutes), gluten and corn. I mostly only eat fruits and vegetables, partly as smoothies. I also eat roasted meats and only drink water. I can eat all I want if I stick to those foods.
What changes have you noticed within yourself since dropping sugar?
I've definitely felt happier. Everything about food is easier. Cutting out gluten also made food a pleasure instead of a task master. Really, it was eliminating both sugar and gluten that helped me the most. As for the sugar, (I cut it out a year before gluten) the cravings for sweets stopped. I stopped retaining water. My body aches and pains reduced quite a bit. And my body shape changed from that "junk food" shape to what I think is the real, normal shape. My waist on my blue jeans fit better, etc... Weight loss happened over time, but I wasn't trying that hard. It still happened. What I really like is that my day is not dictated by sudden cravings to eat. I eat when I am hungry. And the hunger is not that deep unhappy kind of hunger. It's normal hunger where I stop and think about what might taste good. I can go to the fridge to make a soup because it seems like a nice idea. I can put off eating for a while and be fine.

Why did you exclude gluten from your diet? Are you amongs the 1% who is allergic? Gluten has no disadvantages, unless you're allergic.
Oliver Christensen I do not believe only 1% is allergic to gluten. I've read a lot about gluten and that was after I quit. My daughter stopped eating gluten and suggest I try. So I did and my arthritis almost completely disappeared. I know if I have accidentally eaten gluten because when I wake up my whole body hurts. My hands hurt where I had arthritis. My back hurts. Then I investigate and figure out I accidentally ate gluten. I read up on gluten and I believe wheat has been bred and processed to make better selling bread over at least two centuries. The wheat of the ancient world is not like the wheat we use today. It produced less glutenous bread. It sounds like you have decided only 1% are allergic.
