Part 2: Patty Gurdy is a very talented singer songwriter from Dusseldorf, who plays the hurdy-gurdy. (Her real name is Patricia Blucher). She has a growing catalogue of her own work, including two songs she wrote and performed for Amazon's Carnival Row and well as some interesting covers. Recently she did a cover of Ed Sheeran's 'Bad Habits' on the hurdy-gurdy and octaveharpa (a tenor version of a nyckelharpa). Try looking for 'One by One', 'I'll Fly for You', 'Run', 'Horizon Turns Red' to hear some of her songwriting and her covers of 'Molly Malone', 'The Flower Duet' and the 'Parting Glass' to check out her range. Since Christmas is coming up, you might want to check out her song 'Yuletide Fiddler' that she does with Fiddler's Green. You might notice Ben Metzner in the background drawing the post-performance drinks.
The hurdy gurdy? It's a mostly continental medieval stringed instrument that sounds the strings with a rosined wheel rather than a bow. It has multiple sets of strings: chanters, drones, trumpet and sympathetic. Hers is particularly high-tech version with separate volume controls for the different sets, capos, etc. so she can actually change keys on the drones in the middle of performance.

Good reaction and I like it that you love d’Artagnan. Ben Stiller is The vocalist of the group and he is also one of the vocalists of Feuerschwanz. You will love that band, they bring you medieval Metal and again in full costumes with castles in the background!

Ben Stiller? you mean Ben Metzner .. easy to confuse them, I know

Part 1: I'm a long-time Patty Gurdy fan who found D'Artagnan watching the humorous 'Kaufmann and Maid' video. It's a bunch of bands/singers having a good time. My third-grade granddaughter has fallen in love with Ben Metzner and recently requested 'Feste Feiern' at the local skating rink so that D'Artagnan now has a minor following in Northern Virginia. Of their older catalogue my favorite is 'Wallenstein' about a real-life Thirty Years War Czech warlord.

I'll have to look at the Kaufmann and Maid video soon, and that is cool to hear of your obvious appreciation through your knowledge of D'artagnan and love for Patty Gurdy.
I love Wallenstein, too. Great piece. And that's a really neat story about your granddaughter. I'm on the other coast, so I'm obviously not the most astute with the activity present in Virginia, but that is cool to hear that perhaps your granddaughter, through Feste Feiern (wonderful fit for a skating rink playlist, in my opinion), is sparking a love for German music in America. Hopefully, there are more d'Artagnan fans that emerge from that introduction.

Part 3: If you're looking for off-the-beaten path European music I would suggest the Latvian women's group Tautumeitas. These young women sing in a traditional choral style with a lot of interesting harmonies. You might want to start with 'Rūžiņu duorziņā' which is a traditional Latvian song about a painful breakup but has been dedicated to the people of Ukraine. Or you might want to check out 'Guli Guli' which is a celebration of Kalyada which is the Balto-Slavic equivalent of the German mid-winter Yule tradition. They have a very unique sound.

I have their name on the list. Hopefully, I will take a look at them sometime soon.

Maybe you already heard some of these but if you are looking for interesting use of instruments, "Horizon turns red" is another good one from Patty Gurdy, you can hear her hurdy gurdy clearly on that one. My favourite from her is "Luring" feat. Faun, a pagan folk band from Germany. They have a more earthly sound and use interesting instruments as well. Two more or less recent ones from them are "Halloween," oddly enough, in English and "Neun Welten."
Another worthy band is Eluveitie from Switzerland, folk metal, their music includes flutes, violin, hurdy gurdy, mandola, harp and sometimes other things. "Reborn" is always a good place to start and a more recent one is "Exile of the Gods."
Versengold, folk band from Germany, one of them plays the Nyckelharpa, it sounds kind of similar to the violin but not quite. "Die wilde Jagd" is a good one and "Ihr seid Musik" is older but good.
Korpiklaani, folk metal from Finland, their songs are a hit or miss for me, but if you want to hear an accordion properly integrated into a metal song, give them a try. "Niemi" is a good one or "Leväluhta" if you want something more relaxed. Hope you find something else you like.

All very good suggestions. I love Versengold, but reaction videos are usually blocked on youtube or your channel might receive a strike, I've heard.
Patty Gurdy also wrote a song for the TV series "Carnival Row" and also had a collaboration with another interesting band called Alestorm.

Thanks so much for the suggestions. I've noted every one of them on my list of future considerations; hopefully I will get to them in the coming months.

Thanks for the heads-up about Versengold. I'll look into it myself to know for sure. We'll see, but I really appreciate the input.
And I will definitely look into that Patty Gurdy song. I'm still an initiate Gurdian, but I'd love to hear more from her. Transfixing talent.
