Jinhao may not be the most expensive pen in the starter pen class, bu I have found them to be rather reliable in writing and most come in the Chinese/Japanese fine nib which closely relates to most European extra-fine. I have several Jinhao pens and love the quality of them.
I come here for knowledge and opinions on the reg (and am never disappointed), but really appreciate that you embrace the lighter side of the hobby as well - write on!!
I like the pens but I just LOVE the out-takes at the end. These pens do that to me as well. Pick up my Parkers and I am a grey 50+ year old who smokes a pipe. Pick up a couple of shark pens and I'm instantly a bloody five year old. AND I DON'T CARE! :)
I bought the whole 12 colour array a few years back off of eBay. It was cheap and then I had presents to send to a bunch of people, along with a few cartridges of ink. The pens are well worth it.
Just like the pen, a unique video. Lol 🎼"sisters, sisters" was my favorite, I'll think of that next time I watch White Christmas. These are surprisingly nice pens!
OMGOSH! 😂😂😂😂😂 I have to have a couple of 🦈 ✒️s. I'll bet money that you are just a hoot to work with! Thanks for sharing the out takes, they were hilarious... LMAO 😂😂😂
Loved the intro and bloopers! LOL I'll buy all of them for work. one of my colleagues says her hand hurts using the pen the office supplies. I'll get her to try one of these!
The extra-fine in the Jinhao 993 Shark is more like a midway between fine and medium of the Kakuno. Just letting you know so you don't get too surprised about it ♡ still, it's an excellent pen, super fun to use.
@@fishushu I have been using it for drawing and it's definitely not an EF, twice more thicker line than my 0.2 technical pen, comparable with my 0.5. At this point though, I feel like I need more dry-fast ink or better paper :/ I keep smearing my art and handwriting
I have a 10 year old nephew who will love one of these (his dad is a professor of graphic design so buying him another fountain pen is absolutely okay). I am probably going to purchase one for myself, too. 😊
My shark pen collection has been sitting unused for a little while and I'm not sure why! However, I inked an orange one up while watching this video :p Put a mix of Noodler's Firefly and Dragon's Napalm in it, the match is perfect. The only thing I'm not a fan of is that the flow is a tad inconsistent for me no matter how much I clean the pen. It's something I notice a lot because I write pages upon pages of text, pretty quickly, and in preferably wetter nibs, but that probably won't be an issue for most people.
Yeah, they can run dry with long writing session. Sometimes I saturate the feed a bit by twisting the converter piston down. I found it great as a jotter pen though! Interesting ink, might need to try that... - Colin
That "pretty aggressive step" on the grip section is an issue for me since I hold my pens closer to the nib. I liked the pen otherwise, but I haven't been using it because the step cuts into my fingers. My favorite Jinhao is my x450 with a Goulet nib. Great video--so much fun!! Love the outtakes; I was thinking Wolverine at first! :-D
Possibly! The minimums from Jinhao are pretty high (especially per color) so something we have to think through. Definite interest there though. - Colin
Just made an order. This pen is for my girl to try out to see if she likes it. I got the retro stealth. Best part is if she doesn't like it I get two pens.
Such fun! Great to see sucessful people be extra goofy too! Love these, they have become my portable workhorse pen. Just dont drop them the plastic will crack. Thst made me buy 5 more when I dropped my first one! BESIDES how cool are you when you pull out a SHARK fountain pen!🦈👻
I've purchased five of these - two for me and some for my stepsons (15 and 11). They have, of course, broken theirs by screwing the body back on too far/hard. Something to warn children about. :) Mine are going strong and one is a daily writer for work notes.
Unfortunately not. The Pilot cartridges use a proprietary design that fits only Pilot pens. You would use Standard International sizing for the Shark (Diamine, Monteverde, etc) - Colin
I love these pens. I want my next Goulet Pens order to contain a Stipula Rainbow and a couple of sharks. Maybe a whole flock of them. Plus more ink. Perhaps tomorrow?
Hi brain, I recently purchased a pilot metropolitan and a noodlers Konrad but I’ve found that I prefer the metropolitan to write with much more than the way more expensive Konrad. This isn’t what I was expecting. What are some pens in the 50-100 dollar range that feel more like a metropolitan? I have the fine nib for the metropolitan and it’s very smooth to write with whereas the Konrad feels cheap and scratchy. I also much preferred the weight of the weight and feel of the metropolitan in my hand.
Are you using the flex nib on the Konrad? They aren't quite the quality of Pilot nibs, meant more for experiencing the flex. That said, TWSBI could be a good option because I find the nib to be pretty similar. If you like the metal body of the Metropolitan, the Traveler's Brass pen could work: www.gouletpens.com/products/travelers-company-brass-fountain-pen?variant=12020964327467 - Colin
I just bought this as my first fountain pen and it had a fine nib, not an extra fine one. (And the nib isn't hooded.) Can I change the nib on these pens?
I don't think these would be the best option for shimmering inks. Because of the EF nib, you're not going to see a lot of shimmer when writing and the hooded nib makes cleaning it a bit more difficult. Other Jinhao (Shell, x750) with broader nibs could be good though! - Colin
I'm having a lot of trouble getting water/ink/watery ink out from behind the feed (between the black plastic and the grip housing). Tried flushing with water, pen flush, soaking in water, still stuck there. Anyone got any suggestions beyond tossing the pen or completely disassembling it?
Definitely something to consider! The minimums from Jinhao are crazy high, so maybe we could transition these to the non-hooded versions at some point. - Colin
In my experience, there is some likelihood of a dud nib. For the price, the QC isn't perfect, but reaching out to the retailer might be a good option to work on a replacement. - Colin
Honestly didn't know the publishing schedule when Brian filmed this over a month ago! We both had Sharks on the brain clearly. Love Stephen's channel! - Colin
Dude. That intro... I was convinced you were in real peril! Thank god you’re okay. Phew. Close one.
Every time I see those pens, I start singing in my head, "Jinhao Shark doot doo doo doot doo doo ..."
DAMN YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
This right here is the #1 reason I love this company. Thanks for the laughs, Brian! I'll be ordering some (more) sharks soon.
Jinhao may not be the most expensive pen in the starter pen class, bu I have found them to be rather reliable in writing and most come in the Chinese/Japanese fine nib which closely relates to most European extra-fine. I have several Jinhao pens and love the quality of them.
I did *not* expect the bloopers. The main video was great already, but the BLOOPERS! Brian, you are a gift. Truly.
Thank you Brian and the Goulet team. I needed that this morning. 😂🤣😅🥰🥰
Love the intro and the hat brian. My first shark comes in today. Cant wait.
luky starh x3
Hope you have a big enough aquarium to keep such a beast around, they get sad if their home is too small
I actually got one of these a few months ago as my first fountain pen and I LOVE IT!
I come here for knowledge and opinions on the reg (and am never disappointed), but really appreciate that you embrace the lighter side of the hobby as well - write on!!
Thanks for watching! Fountain pens don't need to be a stuffy hobby. - Colin
Finally, we get to see the fun side of Brian Goulet. Thank you. Made my evening. ;D
Those outtakes had me howling! Very funny, great vid 👍🏻
Glad to see you guys have some fun once in a while!! Love it!

This might be my favorite Gouletpens video of all time. 😅 Thank you for the awesome info and presentation!!
Thank you, Brian. A great gift pen. Seals well too so ink does not dry up.
I bought the whole 12 colour array a few years back off of eBay. It was cheap and then I had presents to send to a bunch of people, along with a few cartridges of ink. The pens are well worth it.
I ordered the light blue and gray one to carry around at work and keep with my sketchbook 🙃
*sees Jinhao 993 shark*
Me: I think we're gonna need a bigger bottle.
So many great Jaws references to make. - Colin
I'm waiting for the hammer head shark (cap) to be produced.
No hammerhead yet (that would be great if it worked like the Monteverde Tool Pen). But they do have a swan.
I would buy those in an instant! All sharks are amazing but Hammerheads are the very definition of awesome.
Just like the pen, a unique video. Lol 🎼"sisters, sisters" was my favorite, I'll think of that next time I watch White Christmas. These are surprisingly nice pens!
I don't often call someone a geek, but Brian you totally are one.
I think it's fair to say that the fountain pen community is made up of quite a few of them! I for one am very proud to be one. :) - Drew
I just ordered my Shark pen from you earlier today! It will be my first ever fountain pen and I am well excited!

OH MY GOD YES. THANK YOU. I was saving for kakuno since last month but now I can buy 5 to drag 4 other friends to fountain pen Hobby. >:D

We’ve had the for quite some time now, they’re actually really great to write with.
I absolutely LOVE these pens and the nib skates over the paper in my Lihit Labs Aqua Drops notebook.
Ok ok you convinced me...lol that intro!! Just made a shark pen goulet pen purchase
I have a 10 year old nephew who will love one of these (his dad is a professor of graphic design so buying him another fountain pen is absolutely okay). I am probably going to purchase one for myself, too. 😊
Luckily the price is good enough for the "one for him, one for me" strategy! - Colin

hysterical, especially the outtakes, thanks...
That was super fun. I should get some of these pens for my 9-year old!
Absolutely! These are perfect pens to try to get kids into fountain pens or handwriting. - Colin
I got my daughter the purple as it's her favourite colour. She loved watching this video. Thanks for the entertainment Brian 😁.
LOVE the goofy - been a while. MORE please! and ps - the pens are great too
I got my "great white" Shark from you, thank you. Do you think you may carry the Jinhao Swans in the future?
Possibly! The minimums from Jinhao are pretty high (especially per color) so something we have to think through. Definite interest there though. - Colin
They're back!!
Mine is in white because GREAT WHITE SHARK!
and mine is filled with - RED INK! :>
Just made an order. This pen is for my girl to try out to see if she likes it. I got the retro stealth. Best part is if she doesn't like it I get two pens.
Hitting the ink a bit early in the day there Brian!! Well done my friend!

hi frank :)

Yeah, durability isn't a strong suit if they get dropped or stepped on. But luckily they are easily replaceable if disaster strikes! - Colin
Is it really international standard or is it the oft-confused yet unmentioned 3.4mm bore Chinese standard?
Jinhao 995 in the future or?
The Swan has a sturdy functional clip.
Definitely something we're considering! - Colin
OK, you're right; one is not enough!
Love the outtakes! Had me laughing out loud haha.
I got these for my son last year!
You made me laugh out loud at work. Now I must get one.

Love my shark, I’ve modded the ever living daylights out of it, sporting an Edison feed and steel nib with a waterman converter
Love the outtakes!
Omg I loved the intro
Love this!
I was waiting for Brian to start singing Baby Shark 😂
What lined or dotted papers for teachers and students would you suggest?
If you don't mind me asking, I'm pretty new to the fp community, does pilot namiki ink cartridges work for this? Thanks in advance!
Unfortunately not. The Pilot cartridges use a proprietary design that fits only Pilot pens. You would use Standard International sizing for the Shark (Diamine, Monteverde, etc) - Colin

Okay, I laughed too hard at the end.
:) Great way to start my "RUclips" day.
I just bought this as my first fountain pen and it had a fine nib, not an extra fine one. (And the nib isn't hooded.) Can I change the nib on these pens?
Awesomeness! Question.... do you think this pen can handle the Diamine shimmering inks?

I love the Swans a bit better (basically the same pen with a different cap). They also come in demonstrator versions.
Yeah, those who need a clip, the Swan is a great option. Been trying to add the demonstrator shark to our lineup! - Colin
Best video ever
I may get these because at my school you use different colour inks for different tasks and I cannot write with a ball point anymore
Definitely a good option for that! - Colin
I love my shark pens.
What's that orange ink? PERFECT match. XD
Looks like Kaweco sunset orange to me
I wish yall carried the Jinhao 995 or 991.
that opening!
🤣🤣🤣🤣 omg! Love this video! Thanks so much!
Wish you carried the Jinhao Swan pens.
Thanks again
Do you need an o-ring to convert it for eyedroppers or would just greasing up the threads work?
We recommend both the o-ring & silicone grease when converting, just to be sure. - Colin
Most of the Jinhao pen I have came with the o-ring but I still used a bit of silicone grease on the threads of the 992's I use as eyedroppers.
I'm having a lot of trouble getting water/ink/watery ink out from behind the feed (between the black plastic and the grip housing). Tried flushing with water, pen flush, soaking in water, still stuck there. Anyone got any suggestions beyond tossing the pen or completely disassembling it?

5:24 is the best. hahahahaha
You should carry the option of the none hooded one.
Definitely something to consider! The minimums from Jinhao are crazy high, so maybe we could transition these to the non-hooded versions at some point. - Colin
The most funny pen ever, second only to my sardine roller pen
They're so cheap that I want to collect all colors just because...
Got pink and green so far, only ones available in local online stores nowadays 🤔
My gray one will NOT write at all. I've flushed it out a few times, and used a brash sheet between the tines, and nothing. :(
In my experience, there is some likelihood of a dud nib. For the price, the QC isn't perfect, but reaching out to the retailer might be a good option to work on a replacement. - Colin
Brian, you are so crazy!
That intro tho 😂😂
So I dont even need the cartridge?
Nope!
I'm dyin' 😂😂😂😂😂😂
