You can get fairly inexpensive sat phones and digital communicators now. I recommend them for everyone traveling around Big Bend. I am a ham radio operator so I can use mobile radios too. I was disappointed about an exchange I had with a park ranger the last time I was there though about the subject of radios. I politely asked him what the park VHF frequencies were so I could call a ranger station in case of an emergency. He became very surly and snapped that those frequencies were not available to the general public and that they were scrambled and proprietary, etc. Fear has really changed attitudes in recent years. My suggestion to him would have been to use a different set of frequencies as well as their ‘secret’ ones which they could monitor so that ham operators like me could call in emergencies on behalf of themselves and others throughout the park. It just makes sense. They could use drone fleets as well. The guy calmed a bit and said that they used to monitor ham radio frequencies (I knew they did) but haven’t in several years. Why? There are ham radio VHF repeaters atop nearby mountain peaks that form a network. They could use them.
If a mountain lion attacks at night shine a bright flashlight in its eyes. I’m not an expert but I have a cousin who is a park ranger and gave me that tip.
I had a very close encounter (two feet) with a large male cougar the last time we were there. We were staying in one of the cabins at the Chisos Mountains Lodge and I went out on the back porch one night and looked over the rail to see the lion stealthily walking by. I could have bent down and touched him. It startled me so much that I couldn’t speak. I ran inside and incoherently yelled something to my wife. The cougar was probably trailing deer or looking for food scraps left by tourists. A lady hiking the pretty Lost Mine Trail was attacked by a mountain lion and the trail was closed temporarily. We have seen several bears in the lodge area as well. I nearly ran into a large mule deer down in the desert many years ago. He was on the road with his friends and jumped over a fence after I barely missed him. Javelinas are often seen congregating on the roads as well. They aren’t quick to get out of the way either.
Always take more water on a hike than you think you will need. A man died on the Grapevine Hills trail less than half a mile from his car. We did that hike to the balanced rock, maybe three miles round trip, and we consumed five bottles of water between us. It was a relatively mild fall day.
There's a video about a lone black bear that apeared in the park after they not have being seen for many years. There must have been another because they have made a come back.
@@gchukmaI believe the park decided to "reintroduce" them, back into the park, several years back. Not sure of the pressing need to install their presence. The mountain lions are more than dangerous enough. I have watched people on TV recount their own attacks, by m lions. 1 lady had her entire face ripped off ...I visited there a while back & was extremely disappointed one of the best & most popular trail there, was indefinitely closed, due to bear activity. And bears of course, are every bit as dangerous as the big kitty's...
Your video is rediculous! It sound like a fedwr video aimed at 16 year olds who dont have driving abilities down yet. I am nearly 60 years old and have been to big bend on multiple occasions, so dont need your liberal chastising at all!
What the hell are u talking about? Where's the politics? Be my guest go in there and drive drunk and end up at the bottom of a canyon because you don't need no damn liberal educatin' ya
I wonder why you watched the video if you are already an expert. If you know so much leave it for the first time goers like me. I really appreciated all the information. You don't have to be so insulting. Don't be so bitter. Share love.

I'm a 42 year veteran visitor of the park. Very nice video. Excellent primer. Must watch before visiting Big Bend. Exactly what you need to know.
I agree. The most hazardous thing in any national park is having the wife yell in my ear while I’m driving.
Went to a funeral of a childhood friend who lived here. Nice place to hike, canoe and met many of his friends. Great time.

Lived at Castolon for five years 66-70. Great park.
If you make sure to prepare and respect the wilderness, you'll be fine visiting the park. Love it more and more everytime I visit!
Nice aerial photo showing what a signal mirror flash looks like from a rescue plane! (234 seconds in).
One of the most beautiful parks anywhere !
I totally agree! Im going for thankgiving!
Whether hiking or sight seeing the park is more remarkable each time.
All great info most of which is universally applicable. thank you!

Exactly right.
Well done.
After hearing a Javelina click his teeth at you, you may want to turn around.

i went there 10 years ago or more with my friend. It is a beautiful place. I wish I could go again but can't.
I had no idea there were black bears in Big Bend.
