      Awesome! Thanks Josh. I am happy that we finally get to return the favor by giving you ideas. 😀 If you have any questions not in the video, we probably know the answer. We've been there twice after all and obsess about going back. I would definitely try to time the trip if you can to soak in the Hot Springs. I believe it may be closed now. It would be unfortunate if you didn't get to do that. Have a great weekend!

    Thank you! One of the better "scripts" for Big Bend - my favorite National Park. Two more things would be 1) a "once in a lifetime" kayak trip kayaking thru Mariscal Canyon (it is just a little difficult getting to a good put-in spot), and, 2) go to see the additional 300,000 acres at Big Bend Ranch State Park. You are exposing the best kept secret of the National Parks System!

    • @MagellanandGreyhound
      @MagellanandGreyhound  3 года назад +3

      Thank you! We tried to kayak Mariscal twice!!! But so many things did not go right. It is our top priority when we return. And yes! We got to see some of the state park when we went horse riding. It really is an absolutely breathtaking area at times, and feels almost more special by how untouched a lot of it is. I wish we lived closer

    I was a raft guide out there in the late 80's and met this amazing girl raft guide on a Santa Elena trip. 3 weeks later I asked her to marry me. Stopped by the store in Terlingua to buy a ring. That was 38 yrs ago and still going strong.
    I have seen Fern Canyon totally clogged with ferns and also scoured clean like a pot- an amazing place but incredibly harsh if you are not prepared.

    Big Bend National Park looks so gorgeous! I would love to experience the hot springs, and canoeing through the river past the canyon walls would be amazing too. But I think the star gazing at night in that kind of darkness would be the thing I look forward to the most. I have spent most of my life living in suburban areas where there are always streetlamps and well lit signage lighting up the night and it is hard to see many stars. I would love to spend a few nights out there and really get a good look at the night sky. You have some awesome footage in this video. Thanks for taking us along on the adventure!

    Fortunately we live in Midland (West Texas) so it’s a fairly easy drive down to the park, which we have done several times. We usually stay a night or two in Alpine or Marathon before we go on to Big Bend. There is much to see and do in the Davis and Glass mountains as well. And don’t forget the Marfa lights and Fort Davis! I had a very close encounter (two feet) with a large male cougar one night at the Chisos Lodge in the mountains basin. We have also seen bears a few times up at the basin as well as javelinas, bobcats and mule deer down in the desert. Be sure and buy some copper wire scorpions at Boquillas and shout out a song request across the river to the ‘Happy Mexican’. He made the trinkets and the proceeds of sales help the Boquillas school on the Mexico side.

    • @MagellanandGreyhound
      @MagellanandGreyhound  2 года назад +2

      Oh that’s pretty close (considering!). The first time we ever visited Texas we went to all the National Park sites and other stuff in a big circle around the state. Fort Davis, Marfa (that strange Prada store!), Lake Meredith, Amistad, the missions and the Alamo, Padre Island and of course Big Bend. Such an interesting state, but we love west Texas the best. We met the “happy Mexican” I think - he tried to sell us trinkets while in our kayaks at the entrance to the canyon! There’s another guy who sells stuff near Hot Springs as well. It's funny you mention the wildlife encounter. When we were staying in the Guadalupe Mountains, I had an encounter with (I believe javelinas). Not fun.

    • @MagellanandGreyhound
      @MagellanandGreyhound  2 года назад +2

      @@kellycoleman715 the whole world is fascinating, but if we're going to be stuck in any country, this one is pretty great considering its size and diversity. The difference between West and East Texas was pretty incredible to witness, and yes, we are definitely outdoor travel junkies. We're going to save the museums for when we can't hike anymore haha

    Just watched your video and really enjoyed it! As a native Texan, I have always lived in Texas. I've only been to Big Bend twice in my 68 years.....and both times it was flooding! First time on a bicycle tour in 2014, we got literally flooded out of two different campgrounds and had to take refuge. It rained 7 out of 9 days while cycling and camping, and was cold, foggy and just yuck...visability was less than a mile many days. I really wanted to abandon the tour. The second time I went was in Sept 2020 after they had a very wet period of rain. I drove this time and the desert and area was alive with blooming purple sage and other plants. Could not get into Santa Elena canyon because the road was completely flooded, did visit Boquillas and the river was really high. All canoeing on the river was off limits. There must be something about flooding and me going to Big Bend, lol. But yeah, it is an amazing area, going to try to get back out there soon. I have a slide show movie video on my youtube page if interested. The blooming purple sage was amazing,I think it's worth a watch. Plus the wildflower viedo I have from 2019 is pretty cool.
