    Dear brothers and sisters.
    Please pray for me. For about 15 years I have been struggling with debilitating sickness that's made my life unberable. I am in my mid 30 and would love to still have streingth to serve my Savior and Lord.
    Jesus is my Healer. Thank you all 🙏🏻
    Please also pray that God grants me strength to go through this valley with humility and thankfulness.
    Please also pray that the fire of Holy Spirit would be with me.
    God bless you all, beloved. 🙏🏻

    Service is an expectation, but *is* also an "option"! If it's not optional, then eternal life is no longer a gift.

    • @BibleLine
      @BibleLine  Месяц назад +5

      It’s commanded. To the believer, it’s optional, but to God it is expected and commanded. There is chastening and loss (not of eternal life - yes we agree) to the believer who refuses to serve. The mindset toward service should be more positive. Often it sounds so legalistic and dreadful, but there’s nothing more precious and fulfilling than serving the Lord.

      @@BibleLine thank you for your reply. Could you please share your understanding of "serve"? Also could you provide the scripture reference you would use for "chastening" in the context of this discussion?

      Serve would be to obey, submit, or do what the scripture tells us to do. I would reference Hebrews 12.

      @@BibleLine Thanks for the discussion. I agree with your definition of 'serve'. Just to let you know I'm not what I believe you might see as "hyper grace". I think some who teach online have stepped outside the truth of scripture, and the truth of scripture is all I'm concerned with. I'm more closely aligned with Pastor Jesse, Yankee and others in my understanding of scripture than these who you would say are hyper grace.. But there is some disagreement in understanding which is usually due to what I believe is overlooked context.
      "Chastening" is one of those disagreements where I think the context is being overlooked. In Romans 12:1, what is "the sin" Paul was concerned with? I don't believe he's writing about a "lifestyle of sin". The sin in question is the sin of unbelief. They were counting the blood of the covenant as "an unholy thing" (Heb. 10:29) by taking sacrifices to the temple to escape persecution after having received Christ. They had gone back into Judaism and were again practicing the law (Lev. 5:6). I believe their "chastening" was about their lack of faith, not about a lifestyle of sin as is mostly connected with the term chasten. The supremacy of Christ over the law and their lack of faith is basically the context of the whole epistle.
      Another passage where chastening is used out of context is 1 Cor. 11:32. The context is about how the Lords Supper is observed. They were getting drunk and eating all the food as well as treating some with more dignity than others. Both instances when a form of the word "chasten" is used, it has to do with an irreverence for the blood of Christ.
      Clearly the bible doesn't encourage people to get drunk, or live a lifestyle of sin, but our understanding of God's chastening of the believer should be in line with the context of the passages in which they are used. I also believe it to be more instructional than physical, unless you count all the OT mentions, which were all under the law if I'm not mistaken.

      You make fair points, and I agree with most of what you stated. It would seem as though going away from the blood of Christ (as the Hebrews did) is quite offensive toward God, and it definitely calls for chastening. Nonetheless, I think Hebrews 12 makes a good point in that he “chastens every son whom he receiveth.” It’s not our job to point out what sins, how much sins or this or that to determine your chastening. We believe chastening is between you and God. You and I are accountable to God for what we know. He will judge us at the judgment seat of Christ for what we have done for him (not judging our sin - as some have accused us of stating - I’m sure you know), and he judges us here via chastening if we walk in the flesh. We cannot legalistically toot our horns and pretend to know each other’s chastening. That’s like Job’s friends. Chastening is done out of love from God toward his children. We should desire to honor him, love him, and abide in him. Gal. 5:16-17, John 15:1-8, Heb. 12:1-2, Rom. 12:1-2 would be some of my reference, even keeping with the context.

    Understanding our identity in Christ is significant for our Christian life. A defeatist "I'm just a sinner" identity is not Biblical and is not helpful for growing in Christ. Note where church age believers are described as "sinner" in the Bible. It is not normal and it is not without cause.

    Lets be absolutely clear on this
    If the faith that you have in the Lord Jesus Christ does not lead you to living in obedience to both his teaching and his commandments, you can be 100% sure that the faith that you have in the Lord Jesus Christ is not, i repeat " NOT " saving faith .
