Can someone please tell Joe to stop saying that aikido was used by the samurai for hand to hand combat. I’m extremely disappointed that he would say such craziness. Aikido was created in 1920 by morihei ueshiba. The hand to hand combat used by the samurai was Jiu-jitsu. True jiu jitsu not the Brazilian version.

They are rolling in the direction of energy so they don’t get their bones broken during a demonstration. Difference with aikijitsu is they'd train in three levels: basic (strikes and techniques but pretty stationary), intermediate (some strikes but more dynamic); high (few strikes, very dynamic). Aikido took the 'highest level' but to be honest it missed out on the basics which I think couldn't really be ommitted.

Actual japanese Jiu-jitsu is still very effective even though it has been watered-down for obvious reasons. The thing about training is you subconsciously go along with what they are doing as a student. If he was attacking you, you likely wouldn't allow him to carefully grab your hand, wrist or elbow. You would be grappling and striking in a way he couldn't predict. Nobody wants to upstage an "instructor " so they go along to get along in the hopes of actually learning something instead of being a practice dummy randomly to make the instructor feel good about himself.

yeah, no, it wasn't invented to fight samurai, etc. it wasn't "the Japanese" who invented Aikido, it was a specific Japanese man Morihei Ueshiba who created Aikido. Certainly the use of the sword in the Japanese culture and their indigenous martial arts includes or considers that heavily, and that may be true about Aikijutsu/Daito Ryu Aikijutsu, but Aikido was born out of martial arts expert O'Sensei Morihei Ueshiba having a spiritual experience, and creating a way to embue his art with spiritual perspective and principle.
he was an expert in several different arts, and he was also a deeply spiritual man, supernatural things, happened around him, and through him, … It seems like you had to be either him, or a Jedi to be able to do the art.

Aikido did not appear from a vacuum. Ueshiba was known to have studied many kinds of martial arts before he created Aikido. Disarm techniques like wrist and arm locks that are a staple of Aikido was used by the Samurai to fight against armed and armored opponents. It’s most likely Ueshiba learned these old techniques and incorporated it into Aikido.

This is because Aikido doesn’t actually work in competition. In competition there are rules, and the goal is to subdue the opponent.
Aikido in a real life scenario is meant to simply survive the situation, not to necessarily incapacitate the attacker.
Generally speaking, it will fail in competition. Because even if the Aikido practitioner were always successful, they would never actually incapacitate the opponent, and therefore never meet an end to the fight.

Every school of Aikido forgets completely two important principles that the founder of Aikido set out: first, you need a solid grounding in traditional Japanese martial arts before you start - and that means a first Dan in karate and judo/ju-jitsu, and basic competency with weapons (sword and stick fighting). How many Aikido clubs send away new members and tell them to come back when they've got a couple of black belts, do you think?. Second, he said 90 percent of Aikido is atemi-waza, that is, strikes to your opponent's body. The idea is not that someone attacks you and you do some clever throw or put them in a painful joint lock restraint. The idea is thst someone attacks you and you hit them hard - creating a momentary opportunity to do some clever throw or apply a restraint. Now did you see Seagal punching or kicking any of those guys before flipping them about the place? No.
Aikido was not supposed to be a martial art so much as an approach to martial arts, emphasising the intent to do no more harm than absolutely necessary to defeat your opponent (at the time Japan was going the opposite way, developing an extreme militaristic/fascistic culture in which the ideal was the total destruction of the enemy) and the use of techniques not dependent on great strength or power (unbalancing, using opponents' energy, and painful submission holds - which makes sense as you get older).
So don't learn Aikido, everyone who teaches it is not just clueless about real fights and how they work, but clueless about Aikido too. But maybe learn *from* Aikido.

Only real way to prove it is effective is for its practitioners to join and win mixed martial arts competitions. Until then, it's still bullshido.

    • @billycooper4530
      @billycooper4530 Месяц назад +1

@igorvaiman68 I only differ on my ethical background opinion based on this very slight description alternative. Instead of a recycling term, I like this even better, "energy reflected," as in a mirror. This is how Steven described it in an interview after his Martial Arts Hall of Fame induction in 2004 with votes over 20,000 martial artists of all genres globally! The read on a person's energy with ill intent is measured and reflected back to him, ranging from disputes to lethal intent. And the delivery must never be delayed, this leads to bigger problems. Alas, my view is generated on these spiritual principles,
      1) Men will reap what they sow.
      2) The person that rolls a stone on someone's head will have one rolled onto his.
      3) Authorities should be feared only if your deeds are evil, for they do not bear arms for nothing. Good men have to fear nothing.
      4) Those who live by the sword will die by the sword.
So my opinion is that these principles in bringing back peace and harmony to disturbed individuals is in itself a very good thing. To instigate war is evil, to stop war is good. That is the goal of real Aikidoku. Men who possess the capacity to stop warring at any level should be respected above all others. My personal spin was given in the end for a dramatic close.

Aikido's founder Morihei Ueshiba wanted to create an art that would hurt the attacker as little as possible. Judo's founder Kano Jigoro wanted to create a more competitive version for sports application. They were both black belts and had studied Aikijutsu together under the same master Takeda Sokaku. People underestimate Steven Segal because Aikido is absent from MMA and have the misperception that it's an entirely defensive art, but in a real world fight Aikido is no joke. People don't understand that hard-core Aikido not just defensive, it is really all about ending fights quickly with death strokes to the neck, with or without a sword. The demonstrations and exhibitions you see of Aikido are not hard-core, aggressive and offensive Aikido.
Also, a lot of people think if you could only master one martial art, it should be jiu-jitsu, presumably because "all fights end on the ground." That is great if you're in top shape and condition all of your life.. But as you get older and you get out of shape and get weaker and slower like everyone does in older age, then Aikido is going to be the best martial art to have mastery in because it is much, much less dependent on conditioning and strength and speed than Aikido is. Imagine fragile, weak Joe Biden, he can barely walk: would he better equipped to defend himself at 80 years old if he were a jiu jitsu master or if he were an Aikido master?

And I'd say, aikido was totally different from any other disciplines. Don't mean to disrespect or discriminate, but that's why, most Aikido practitioners keep it more of a low profile because of how their Sensei would discipline them, other martial arts practitioners on the other hand, tend to show off what they can do. Just like these MMA guys who tend to talk trash just to sell fights, and even talk trash about their opponents' families, wives, fathers, etc. That's why MMA these days tend to focus more on entertainment, bad bloods, and all sorts if shit, rather than martial arts itself. This and also lot of the masters are black-belts in various martial arts, so it's just part of their overall tool-set.
I particularly like the school of Shoji Nishio who shows how small adjustments in the techniques can make them so much more effective, with their original principle in mind and also how often atemi (strikes) commonly disregarded are integral part of aikido - not to finish, but to "prep" opponent for more effective aplication of throwing or pinning techniques and interrupting opponent's rythm.

@@ailurusfulgens1849 I've trained in aikido for over a decade also. Its not garbage. The effectiveness of a martial art depends on the practitioner and the context. For example, there are many aikido techniques that are not permitted in MMA fights so in an MMA match the aikidoka doesnt have much weapons. MMA is setup to suit boxers, grapplers and wrestlers. Aikido was developped through swordsmanship and is basically a descendent of jui-jitsu which swordsmen used whenever they were separated from their sword. So aikido works best against sword attacks and attacks where the attacker is fully committed in motion which is precisely what used to happen on the battlefields of samurais and shoguns. In a more modern sense, aikido is effective for bouncers, policemen and bodyguards who have to restrain individuals and quell dangerous situations quickly. So I dont know who you've been listening to but aikido is not useless. Like all martial arts, it has its ideal CONTEXT.

If you know anything about martial arts, youd know this is suspicious as fuck. People from every field and discipline cream themselves over the opportunity to show off their mall-dojo karate school, or backyard wrestling MMA knock off. The martial arts community is passionate if nothing else.
