Initially we thought we will make Civitaveccia our 'sea day' as we had been to Rome many times not only on cruises but also land tours. However thanks to your sharing Tressa, we had decided to explore Civitaveccia instead. Is there a free shuttle from the cruise ship terminal to Civitaveccia town centre?

I'd want to go out of season - my worst nightmare being stuck in those queues and just people everywhere - I can't believe I live in England and haven't been to Rome...I'll work on it!
Going out of season is definitely the way to go if you want to avoid the crowds. Trust me, those queues can be a nightmare! And hey, living in England, you're so close - it's just a quick hop over. We're not experts, and everyone has their own take on things, but if I were planning it for myself, I'd spend 3-4 days in Rome. That gives you enough time to soak in all the major sights without rushing. For fewer crowds, I'd recommend going in October or May - the weather is still great, but it's not as packed. Rome never disappoints. The Vatican and St. Peter’s Basilica were incredible. It is a very walkable city and of course the FOOD…AHHHHH

The Vatican is a must see no matter how religious you are… the history and art is fascinating. We booked through The Roman Guy to get early entry.

Even in October, the crowds are bad
Rome is just one of those places everyone wants to see.
