Unless the horse is conditioned to attribute something pleasant to the words, like if they were always accompanied by a stroke or release, "good boy" means absolutely nothing to the animal. Human words/sounds alone without action just help the rider calm down not the horse.
Esmee Laheij just because someone doesn’t praise their horse doesn’t mean their not a good rider their just very focused. Well trained horses don’t really need praise.
I’m sat on my bed and I was scared ur going so fast and some of them jumps are massive and the turn the drops all the water! Omg wouldn’t have the balls! Amazing tho! Xx

FUN!!!! What a gorgeous course, and fantastic ride!! You girls did great!! Watching this makes me want to head to the farm and jump on my guy for a ride tonight!!! Loved this video, thanks for sharing!!! Xx
Personally, I think they're way to close, they're good riders and were lucky for how the black horse refused the jump but even good riders get unlucky. I have seen countless horses refuse jumps and then go backwards instead of to the side, especially if the rider falls. Even though horses try their best to avoid something rather than stomp on it, if the black horse had tried to go backwards or his rider had fallen the chestnut horse's rider would have been way to close and it would have been very complicated to avoid and more importantly unnecessarily dangerous.
I don’t think a lot of people realize how much work is put into this, the stamina and time the rider and horse outs into this, you have to stay focused while pursuing your horse to keep that speed, and you have to stay with the pace while counting strides, taking twists and turns and make sure you’re on the right track, great work!
I can honestly say that I never blinked once from the moment you started and I’ve taken part in Hunter Trials in Innishannon, Co. Cork. You’re both great riders and you certainly know how to look after your horses. He loved your encouragement; he was all ears! A bit of a shame about the side door departure but we’ve all done that! I hope you have many years of excitement on horseback, never give it up. I did unfortunately, due to a relocation. Maybe one day I’ll get a quiet old fella to take care of. All the very best to both of you!! JC.

I have to say im SO pleased to see you ride in this video. The way you are letting your horse pick his own peace and just sitting there supporting him.. AND GIVING HIM POSITIVE FEEDBACK ON EVERYTHING! Its so amazing!!! So sad to see you falled at the end :( And a bit sad too see that you are sitting in your saddle (and the rider before you) the entire trip.
