    Great point that this brings games back to the essentials which is make it fun. In some way this used to be spirit for Nintendo when they release wi with it motion controller, ds with touchable screens. Wi sports and the world end with you has left lasting impact in all other games. The difference now is that it is much easier to develop for Playdate than paying for licensing. So great for the industry.
    The screen does look awesome but can be a tad too tiny for those of us with aging eyesights. Without backlight remind me of the days of gameboy, pocket gameboy, neo geo pocket. Hard to see in anything less than direct light source which is plenty of spaces. Wished they had gone with what Analogue had done with their screen.

    I like this console. People may hate the price, but its a niche product and shouldn't be compared to modern consoles. There are many products in this niche, such as the Arduboy and Gamebuino Meta, but I think Panic and Teenage Engineering did a great job. Casual Birder is fun, but I like a lot of the games people are making that can be side-loaded.

    Considering that a Switch Lite costs $199 and the Playdate costs only $20 less, reviewers should be much more critical about this. It has a B&W screen with no backlight and comes with simple basic games a lot of which are just clones of old famous games. And yes, the crank is a gimmick.

    • @azamarro
      @azamarro 2 года назад +3

      I've seen this same criticism and I would argue that the high cost is due to it being released by a small developer. Typically a large company can afford to sell things at a lower price point because of the scale of operation. Add to that, this is Panic's first foray into actual hardware--a huge undertaking--even dealing with part shortages due to COVID... Basically, everything is going against them. In a market dominated by giant corporations, it's exciting to see anyone going against the grain. And to be garnering this much attention is incredible. We'll see whether or not the games hold up, but going off of the vision and the craft involved with the project, I am impressed.

      @Arte Floe I don't think you can even compare this to a steam deck. Ignoring the massive hardware differences, it's really about the games and that offering is so fundamentally different.
      I am with you and @Miscl in that I think this is a totally different market and I could see myself with one and would be more likely to take with me for cheeky gaming when out and about way more then a switch or steam deck.
      Think Miscl example is is exactly how it would be used and I have a switch, its size means it certainly isn't on me all the time and the games are just so much more you can't just quickly game for 5 or 10 mins which this gives the impression you can. All are portable gaming machines but they serve different segments within that market.

      Yea not sure what’s worst .. the review or all the desperate soy boys in the comments “great review”.. “this looks awesome” .. this product is a joke and the only reason why I watched the full review was I interested in watching how long the presenter could actually keep up the bs.

      Lol...just let the Tree Hugger have their fun. They don't know any better. they gotta have the mono screen and that crank to look cool.

      I got bored and I’m trolling all the soy boys asking them how much they been using their 1 but mono chrome screen that’s “innovative”
