Glad to see a quality handheld that fits in your pocket in 2022 but my Game Boy Pocket is just so awesome to this very day. IPS mod definitely helps too
Quite amazing how many games that have popped up for this console :) Very happy to see that its doing so well! And thanks for playing "Pop pop" - I'm the guy who created it :)
Itch is such an awesome platform! For me a big deal that games for the Playdate can be downloaded there. Btw: I also have a little Browser game on there called School Fight 🌝
Check out the games by SquidGidDev: Pulp Craft, Unnamed Roguelike, By the Pier, and Escape from Complex 32. Also: The Wizard Apprentice, Daily Driver, A Joke Worth $.99, Crunky, Birds and Beans. Necro Crisis is out today and is an on the rails light gun game where the crank is a machine gun. $6.66.
Looks like it's much easier to create games for a system that exists. :) But in all seriousness, this doesn't look bad at all. I'm glad to see not everything relies on the crank since I was a bit worried the various devs would feel the need to add that as a mechanic in all the games. Instead, this looks like a throwback to the original Gameboy with a few extra features and true black/white screen. So I wonder how long until we see those emulators... and I'm assuming Doom will be on it soon. I'm also really glad to see games are available on other stores.
I really thought about ordering one but like someone else said I can’t see me putting more than five minutes after this and never touch out again it’s a cool gadget but expensive for what it really is if it was cheaper I may have picked it up for to sit in a corner but not for almost $200
I’m not gonna lie, I’m pretty disappointed in this console so far. I believe I have 4 more games to “unlock” before I have the full season, but every Monday I’ve been really underwhelmed with the new games. The surfing game was interesting, but that’s all I’ve been able to have a lot of fun with. I don’t want to read text on the small screen, so most text based games are out of the question. Maybe if the screen was back-lit I’d play it a lot more. I want to lean back in my bed and play for a few mins before calling it a night, but the lighting in my room isn’t good enough.
This device is a huge pass for me. It's not backlit, I am not going back to that kind of gaming. I dealt with it with the gameboy but no way am I going backwards.
In the world of today handheld games this just seems obsolete like I know retro is a thing because I'm that old but damn this just seems dumb with the technology we have today
200$ for teeny tiny s creen and no blackight. This thing is junk. if it just had a backlight then the thing would be potentially good even if too pricey. Price is a matter of taste and opinion, but no backlight making in unplayable int he dark is not excusable in 2022. And I hate to say this too because I believe in the passion of the Playdate team.I really feel they were passionate about it. Then blew it.
why would anyone buy this? the games aren't even in color and you can probably get a modern version of these games on a mobile phone or console. 180 dollars for this is an absolute joke. get a used ds or switch instead and play real games, not some black and white pac man game.
hang on a sec.. are you telling me they won't let you back date and get the original free games? System killer right there and I hope the roms are dumped to teach them a lesson
Every week you get access to 2 new games for the season. Whenever you register the system is when your season starts. Originally this was to let everyone experience 2 games together every week to build hype and a community around the device but because of Covid, productivity made it difficult for a simultaneous launch. Everyone just gets their 2 weekly games at different times until all season 1 games are released. Seeing how many community games they have available on itch, it seems like it was a good idea that came at a bad time.
yeaaah...really feels like a novelty item....there's no reason in 2022 to have a screen without backlight...and that crank is suppose to be the special feature, you didnt use it much....not really sure what is the market for that thing...
Dude keep the dirty long nails to yourself rather than hi res closeups for the entire video in our face... I mean that's just gross and I never understand why men do this and it happens way too often here.

10 NES games you've NEVER heard of.
I never thought I would ever see JohnRiggs play one of my games!
Which is yours?
@@IceDawg-qw5hd Plunge (it was a game jam, I have some better stuff I swear)
love that you find joy in the simplest games in the shop i wouldve never seen their gameplay so thank you for this!!

Very interested to see what else is created with this unique console - great vid John! 😊

Thanks for playing my game pack! :)
Might be good if the crank generated a backlight.
Very interesting! I'm going to have to pick up one of these.
I would like to see you do a ranking series on GBA games
No backlight is a bummer

your content upload rate is not only admirable, but fulfilling my daily dose of Riggs retro
Great video! My Playdate should arrive any day now. I'll be checking these out for sure.
This is something I'd play with for 5 minutes and never touch again.
Yeah. But it’d be a helluva 5 minutes.
It's a neat little device, and had no idea it auto flips into Tate Mode 🤯
I love that you skipped the text in an interactive poem game - Totally something I would do 🤣
i'll mention some of these to my co-host on the podcast to check out-thanks!
For that thing all you need is one Bass pro game or something like that for fishing and that'd be it

looks like a hardware version of warioware
Gotta be better than those Tiger handhelds from back in the day.
I missed most of the gameplay staring at that amazing roller skating rink background behind the device 😂

It's actually "Pulpergeist," but thanks for playing all the same!
😢?
¿Have you though about making one ranked video? Those are really nice and the available games since this video deserve some attention.
thats neat - not sure 'd play it but cool and thanks for the share :)
spinning the reel in the fishing simulator is backwards :/
This is amazing so many twisted turns I will get one right away
That thing reminds me when we used to bust the joystick from the N64 controller in Mario Party lmao
You are much much taller than I expected. My son invited you to the arcade tonight.
Sweet! Yeah, he didn't know me, though. He just said 'are you a youtuber?' haha
@@JohnRiggs yeah I was talking with my arcade buddies when I saw you walk by.
Such a weird system.
My only rteal concern is how sturdy does the handle feel where it is coonnected to the bopdy of the uniut?...seems like an obvious weak point
Wow. This little Gadget is 180 bucks
I never played the Playdate system!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

people say game boy games are outdated but they blow every single one of these games out of the water
Can you sideload games? Is there a piracy scene?
This will not do it for me, a gameboy is nicer and a lot cheaper.
So the majority of the games are simple time wasters?
Yeah bro
screen swow strange!
cool

👍👍
I see this handheld being useful while on a train ride or waiting for a Dr appointment but that's it. A lot of these games are mediocre.
Quite possibly the most boring games ever made.

It's unique.
This system looks like a huge flop to me. Non-backlit and games that are essentially outdated, glorified Game and Watch titles. Hard pass.
hang on a sec.. are you telling me they won't let you back date and get the original free games?

Sorry no hate on the company but this aint it.
$180?!?! for a Playdate. Waaay to much.

Seriously none of this looks interesting to me. Looks about as fun as a tiger electronic game.
All this hype for a shit device

I need my nails for opening cans and scratching backs.
