Jeff Lynne is a f**king genius. No-one before or after has been able to marry something that sounds like an orchestral film score to a catchy pop tune as seamlessly as he was able to, over and over. True talent.
I was 14 years old in November of 1976 when I looked at my family's stereo and I saw an LP sitting on the floor. It had the ELO 'Wurlitzer' design logo on the front, and I knew it was an album my brother had gotten as a gift a few days earlier, and that it had a song on it that I'd been hearing on the radio, 'Livin' Thing'. There was no one home so I decided to put a pair of headphones on and give the album a listen. When that intro to 'Tightrope' kicked in, it totally and completely blew my mind. And not only did it blow my mind, it gave me chills and goosebumps. By the time 'Tightrope' ended, I was nearly speechless. I had never heard anything so incredible in my young, juvenile delinquent life. I must have played it 20 times in a row on that first listen of the album. I moved on to the rest of the album and I was still just in awe of every song, but then it got to the last song, 'Shangri-La', and it blew me away like 'Tightrope' did. To this day, the album ''A New World Record', and 'Tightrope' are my favorite ELO album and song respectively. One suggestion I would add, is that in the future, ELO is really a band who needs to be listened to with headphones. 'Tightrope' is a different experience with headphones on. Hopefully you have lots more ELO on your schedule.
This is the 1st track off the album A New World Record, now go for the last track Shangri-la with the world's most beautiful outro. All the tracks in between are awesome too. Incredible album.
My favorite by them. Mission is so strong too.
The first album I ever bought. Fantastic record.
YES!
Been listening to ELO for over 40 years, love shangri la, but the problem is, you keep changing your mind - its like having 50 children & meeting one of them again & then that child is your favourite for a while, it's a lifetime thing this ELO therapy !
i'm nearly 65 years old, i'm so glad you came across such a band like this, i grew up with elo you will never here a bad song.
This is my favourite ELO song. The greatest opening to one of the greatest albums of all time.
This is the one that kicked off my love for ELO, I can never forget that day 48 years ago!! I was told to come and listen to something not knowing what it was and listened to the whole album through. Imagine starting with Tightrope and finishing with Shangri-la, it does not get better than that and does not age ❤
You must try "Shangri-La" from "A New World Record". My favorite ELO song. I know you'll love it.
Seriously good taste guys! This is one of the best bands ever, Jeff Lyne is a genius. Tightrope is by far one of ELO's best tracks.. and what an awesome into to the album! Thanks for reviewing this one.. I'm new here so well done!
This is one of my favorite songs of all time - period. Definitely my favorite ELO song...but their catalog is rich and deep and gorgeous. My father played classical piano and was so thrilled when I started listening to ELO, because of the classical influence. Jeff Lynne is one of the greatest songwriters and producers. I especially love his use of percussion - a wall of sound wallop...always keeping things exciting throughout a song.
This is the perfect opener for a concert - personally experienced in 2016 in Oberhausen, Germany. 👍 ELO rules!
Next should come "Shangri-la".
So nice you both got to react to ELO's 'Tightrope'. It's an EPIC song!
Jeff Lynne is a Genius...
The album this song came from, New World Record, has many great songs that became hits: “Livin Thing,” “Do Ya,” and “Telephone Line.” The album closer, the great “Shangri-La,” is a fan favorite, too.
This whole album "A New World Record" is fire!.
I agree...I love ELO and this is probably my favorite song of theirs. Staggeringly beautiful.
Love the way you guys go like 'this is my favorite' after each new ELO song you are listening to 😀Same here, every single song is a masterpiece and kind of exceeds the other songs. Let's put is like this: every single one of their songs is our favorite song for the very moment we are listening to it, feeling it, flying aways on its wings into the lightness of being. Hope to see you reacting to all of their songs, there are so so so many to discover still...
It is so AWESOME to see young people fall in love with my most fav band in the world. Been a fan for over 50 yrs. You should listen to these two albums by them , A New World Record and Time. You will LOVE them. Jeff Lynne is a SUPERSTAR.. Enjoy .
First time I have seen the two of ye really enjoy the song happy days well done kids ❤
I regret not buying ELO albums back then. Only got a few singles. Missed out on so much goodness
Well, it's never too late, is it? The good thing is, all of their albums have been rereleased and expanded a few years ago. That's when I got all of them the third time (the first time being the original vinyls, the second time being the original CDs) 🙂
You did I bought nearly every album from the 70s to the 80s..🙏🎧😁
This band has been one of my favorite since junior high 1970.
At least you've now seen the light; you are forgiven 😂
Tightrope is quite underrated
Shut up
Marissa, you made such a good point when you said you were wondering how Jeff would reincorporate the ominous classical Intro back into the traditional rock song as it progressed, and he did it seamlessly. I agree with your rating: 1,000,000 out of 10. :D
As for your next ELO reaction, please do the last track from their flawless 1976 album, A New World Record. The song is called, *"Shangri-la".*
This is my favourite ELO track too, along with DREAMING OF 4000. You must listen to it. There are two versions. One more rocky and the other version more stripped back. Both great.
Dreaming of 4000 is a hidden gem👍
Yes agree John, "Dreaming of 4000" is superb. 👍😊
I love her reaction at the end! It’s such a natural and real reaction! It’s my favorite song of theirs too! lol 🤘😎
Did I tells ya or did I tells ya?
Picture me. I just turned 14. It was early 1977.
I purchased this album (A New World Record) based off of hearing "Living Thing" and "Telephone Line" on the radio.
I thought those two songs were great BUT, I was not prepared when I put the stylus on to the start of this record to be smashed to the floor by this brilliant opening track that sold me forever on the Jeff Lynne/ELO sound.
Bloody criminal it was never released as a single. One of Jeff's best.
Me also....late 70s was a great rock era
I saw them in concert in 2019...my life long dream....at 70 yrs old.....his voice was as beautiful as ever and the music was off the charts amazing....no one compares to the magic and talent of Jeff Lynne ❤️🎶😊
Told ya you'd like it! 'Twilight' (including the 'Prologue') is another great album opener from their album 'Time'. For some good 'stompers'... go for 'Don't Bring Me Down', 'Hold On Tight' and 'Do Ya'!
This wasnt even a single , thats how good ELO are
Dang! Awesome! Spreading the word on ELO in school now
Haven't heard this for ages .. I liked it back then, but didn't really appreciate how great this is ! .. What a magnificent mixture of orchestral / symphonic power and wonderful melody .. Have to agree with Marissa .. This is way above Mr Blue Sky, IMHO .. One of ELO's very best for sure .. Thanks guys !
You should listen to these other songs by them, prologue / Twilight, 21st century man, confusion, The Stranger and I'm alive. I lived through the 70s when I was a kid and it was always exciting when something new came out from ELO, it was never a dull moment.
You really should go for Shangri-la which is the last track from the same album. You will be amazed and love this just as much as Tightrope!
You guys need to checkout ‘So Fine’ by ELO. It’s off the same album as ‘Tightrope’ and is often overlooked but is a completely undiscovered gem.
The BEST BAND 🎼😎🌞😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
I ALWAYS forget about this one....such a classic ELO track that tends to go under the radar (hence myself included) Amazing strings in this one!!!...now let's get "Shine A Little Love" and I'll being in H E A V E N !!!! :)
Jeff Lynne, such a unique writer. try Xanadu he wrote from the movie of the same name....or 10538 Overture, or Evil Woman, or Livin' Thing...all are great songs to react to.. thx
My band also 1977 & forever in my ❤
Yeahhhhhhhh THATS ELO
I love her reaction to this song 👏 😎 👍 ❤️ 😍! Great video
Incredibly this wasn't even a single! Believe me this gets better the more you listen to it!
"The Jungle" from Out Of The Blue Drummer Bev Bevan Does a Great Tarzan Yell
Jeff Lynne's production is always incredible - great songwriter, arranger, lyricist, and producer. I don't think anybody has ever matched him in the combined skills.
This is my most favourite reaction by the two of you ever! And Melissa is right!
Hey youngster! Glad you are liking the old stuff! We enjoyed it just like you are doing now when it first came out. We loved it! BTW, quit being so raspy with the girl!
You got to have headphones to listen to the 70's music. It's a must!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I listened to the ELO greatest hits. Bought A New Wold Record, shoved the stylus in, was blown away by this.
my favorite song from this great album...
THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU FOR NOT STOPPING THE SONG IN THE MIDDLE to comment!
Great job!
Yes, Jeff Lynne is a musical genius. "Tightrope" is epic. Jeff Lynne and Tuomas Holopainen of Nightwish are in my humble opinion two of the best songwriting composers ever. Thank you for a wonderful reaction. Paul 😊👍
I'm glad leave and I only say her because I don't know her name speak not normally that expressive go you girl ❤
Yay
Best ELO song is "Rockaria" from the same album. Try that one.
ELO - лучшие и непривзайдённые! Величайшая группа современности!
Seriously, check out "Night in the City" of OUT OF THE BLUE! You won't be sorry.
She's totally not crazy. My favourite too. I was a classically trained violinist and this was a kind of transition for me from classical music ..used to play along with it. Love the enthusiasm guys!
Love your reaction.
Great reaction.
Great track.
part of Stevie Wonder - Pastime Paradise sounds like the violin part and some of the choir part
Glad she likes it.
My parents used to place this in the car , this is my favourite ELO song aswell. The whole album, A New World Record, is the best. Loved your reaction 💛
Yes! ELO.
Two big hits that came out of this album is "Livin' Thing" and "Telephone Line". When you kids listen to Telephone Line, remember, this was before cellular phones, voicemails, and call waiting. I first heard of ELO in 1978 when this album came out. I was in Jr. High at the time. Yes, I had hair and clothes like That 70's Show.
Cores are crazy because ... Marissa 🤩
So if that's just the FIRST track, imagine what the rest of A New World Record (the album it's lifted from for the compilation album you're listening to); sounds like
And remember he thought this wasn't good enough to release as a single.Awesome
ELO were one of the first Bands to use Electronic keyboards way back when noone other was thinking about it, there was a Band in the 60s I forgot the name
but it was a instrumental called TELSTAR, I cannot remember if they had another hit in the Englisch Hitparade.
Tornados.
@@stephenmirams170 thanks my memory is going, was my favorit when I was a kid.
@@johnroberts5797 You're welcome. I think Globetrotter was their only other chart hit.
Out Of The Blue is a fantastic album, but listen to Concerto For a Rainy Day.
The band's frontman Jeff Lynne regarded his own songwriting at this point to have reached a new high.
"The songs started to flow and most of them came quickly to me. To have all those hits, it was just ...I mean amazing really. Going from doing okay for probably three or four years to suddenly being in the big time, it was a strange but great thing." - Jeff Lynne
From time to time my brother and I put together our top 5 E.L.O albums and debate. His is always Out of The Blue where mine is always Another World Record. Perfect blend of Rock and Orchestration.
Absolutely adore your reactions to ELO. This track opened Jeff Lynne’s ELO tour in 2018 (replaced on a later tour with Standing in the Rain). I think you’re probably reading too much into the lyrics as Jeff openly admits it’s the songwriting element he hates so I don’t think anything he writes is too deep - but who cares, everything he creates is magnificent. Anyway, why not try Rockaria from the same album (A New World Record)
This is my album.. love it 😀
Can you do Ticket To The Moon? Or Here is the News from Time. Very cool.
Yes, one of their greatest indeed. Please explore their 1974 'Eldorado' album, a conceptalbum where the songs blend into each other so beautifully. Two albumsides, two segments to play in one go, each.
I agree with her on this one. I prefer this song.
Great song, still sounds great today......
Where are your headphones guys. YOU'RE MISSING THE EXPERIENCE!!
👍👍👍
Esta cancion no llego a ningun ranking, pero ELO demuestra que eso no importa para hacer y ser una gran canción. Tightrope es una de mis tantas favoritas de ellos. Otra es Living Thing, Telephone Line, Showdown, Shine Little Love, Its Over.
Gracias Chicos por traer esta cancion a reaccion.
Abrazos
You will always say, this is my favourite song
Headphones to listen to ELO is a must .! Great song choice 😘
As great as this song is, it wasn't played on the radio like 3 other songs on this album were. "So Fine" also wasn't on the radio but is my favorite song on this incredible album.
To pick a favourite from ELO is not as easy as it seems. I like a real broad range of their material. This song is certainly top of the list though ever since I first heard it. Great albums. Awesome music.
You need to do a reaction to Rockaria!
Please listen to Big Wheels or the intro of Eldorado. There are so so many great songs by ELO. They've been my favorite band since I was 11 years old.
Your in the elo rabbit hole now. Jeff lynne..master of the cords.
Have you heard their version of Roll Over Beethoven? You'll love it!
Katy Perry ripped this one off for I Kissed A Girl
Sorry Tyler,, But i agree with her,, This is my favorite E.L.O. song. 🔥🎸🎶❤️
You need to try ELO (Rockaria) I believe on that same record. Its another juicy morsel.
guys you must listen to Jeff Lynne | Now You're Gone his the lead of elo. its must.
If you move that noisy character on the left side of the video 1.25 m (4') backwards, tie him up, mute him down, zoom in and focus on the beautiful smiling face to the right and then do a reaction to _Mission: A New World Record_ from the same 1976 album as this song (A New World Record), you'll get a like from me.
🤨
There a lot of Beatles vibes and ELO is my favorite band
I agree with her. Tightrope over Mr Blue Sky by a mile.
If only we had the same musical creativity today with bands/artists. I know people are out there that can do such awesomeness but unfortunately most have been poached by the manufactured music industry.
This is one of my favorites by them. Unfortunately it never charted on the billboard top 40 because it wasn't released as a single, which seems a mistake to me.
Reaction Angel22 - Gadejo please 🥺
If you were to pick ELOs greatest song- this would be a strong contender!
You've heard the beginning of this album now listen to the end. Shangri-la .
Welcome to the world of Jeff Lynne
More ELO! Try Rockaria
