Fantastic video! This was perfect for the installation on my 2003! Very similar radio too! I have the Sony XAV-1500. I'll make a video with my results tonight!
This is a great tutorial! What I especially liked were the instructions on removing the rear hatch panels, routing suggestions for camera RCA and power, as well as the very nice explanation of the camera power/camera trigger. Great job!
Is the white wire also a red/black wire insulated in a white jacket? I bought wire for the reverse trigger but it’s red/black and I don’t want to mess it up.
I tried to hookup this reverse camera to my 2013 Highlander base model factory radio but am not able to figure it out. I can't find schematics of which wire is the video in and reverse wire. Where can I find that info?! I bought a wiring harness and it doesn't seem to work.
we saw three wires from the bottom tail light and two wires from the top taillight. The top one doesn't seem to turn on in reverse and the bottom one is always on. Any tips?
A multi meter will help solve the issue. You just need to connect into a source that is only on when the light is on to either power the camera and / or provide a reverse trigger for the radio.
I am stupid. My 2012 SE model already has a backup camera wired into that small ass display… It is spliced dead into the native display harness. Do I really need to cut it all open, separate the camera wires from mileage & power wires? And how do I tell one from the other?
Do you really have to run that white cable all the way to the front from the reverse light? or can I just start from the reverse light to the back camera?
Totally depends on the location you are at, whether you do it yourself or have it done. Price varies by shop, and some shops only install equipment they sell you. Just call around.
No, all this for a camera that is triggered by going into reverse AND being able to use the camera without putting the car in reverse. Were you paying attention?
Parts used will be linked in the description of the video!
Thank you for posting this video. Very helpful. Not a lot people left comments, I decided to leave one.

I have a 2012 Toyota Highlander that has a factory back up camera. How would I wire that into my aftermarket radio?

Did you have to drill a pilot hole for the camera screws or do they self tap?
We mounted our camera to the license plate studs, not sure what drilling you are referring to.
Do you really have to run that white cable all the way to the front from the reverse light? or can I just start from the reverse light to the back camera?
Nope, you don't if you just want to power the camera off the reverse light, and use the red wire off the RCA to trigger the radio, that works too
How much is an installation like this?
Totally depends on the location you are at, whether you do it yourself or have it done. Price varies by shop, and some shops only install equipment they sell you. Just call around.
