      "Immediately locking the door"
As a physical security enthusiast, that's a thing that is bothering me for decades. Why on earth do you heave working door-handles on the OUTSIDE of the front door in the US?
In Germany it's common practice to just have a solid knob outside with which you can't open the door. The door can only be opened by turning the key to the end, which will pull the latch bolt back. That means that even if the door is unlocked, you can't open the door from the outside, except with means of forcing the latch bolt back by sticking something thin through the door and the frame and even that can be countered by having a latch bolt with a dead bolt. But a full on door-handle outside is just ridiculous.

I had a similar experience to the little boy who was followed and ran to the neighbors house. Long story short, when I was about 13 (28 now) I was followed by an older Latino man while walking my dog. I noticed his behavior was odd and being the paranoid kid I was, I thought something was up immediately. Instead of taking my normal route home I cut though this grassy area and was able to make it to my porch right as he pulled up. My uncle came to visit that day and apparently saw me while I was making my way to the door. As soon as I opened it he walked passed me out onto the porch and was cursing the man out. The guy lingered around but eventually left. I stopped going outside after this pretty much. It’s a terrifying experience that stays with you forever.

Right?!! I remember having to report a strange man prowling around my mom's condo complex. Its a 55 + older complex & very very quiet. I was driving out & as I reached the driveway of the complex I see a man with his back to me, wearing a long coat & slacks. I realize his slacks are down too far, almost like they will fall off. I admit I thought it was one of the neighbors, as the man was shuffling & a couple of the residents there are a little dippy lol. So I drove carefully around him & realized he was not only NOT old...but his parts were exposed! He rushes to cover them with his hands when he sees my car. I stopped to call the police & was told (alarmingly) "As soon as we find someone, we'll send them over." FIND someone?!! Wow, busy night or not many cops anymore?? Of course by the time the cops arrived he was gone.

Two lessons to take away from this:
    1. If you ever find yourself in a similar situation, call the police as early as possible. Most importantly, ask the operator if the police can arrive discreetly, no sirens. This would increase the likelihood that they’ll catch the perpetrator.
    2. Don’t be like the guy in the last video. The worst mistake you can make is trying to be a hero. Not only did he leave himself exposed to a potential ambush, he left his house door, unlocked. The safest place you can be is inside, doors locked.

@@reh3884 Realistically speaking? If the police really were determined they could start with tracing the movement of the suspects using public CCTV where available, and convene with neighbours if they have doorbell or home CCTV installed in the case of any missing steps. They could trace the person all the way back to the car, taxi, or public transportation they used to get there. Public transportation is very easy because it's all recorded 24/7. A taxi too can make it easy especially if they didn't pay cash. A car you'd at least get the colour, make and model and with the description of the person you can pull an APB to units in that area to keep a search out for that car which would have very high chance of eventually tracking down that suspect.
The obstacle? The authorities don't have enough funding to give a shit to make any level of detective work for heavily suspicious but non-yet-criminal incidents. Which means the only way any of these people would get caught when they actually manage to assault or kill somebody. That is the state of modern day policing. And I'm from the UK and actually had the privilege of seeing the difference of state police funding eventually go down the shitter. 15 years ago it wouldn't be hard to imagine that the local police would make an effort to track down suspects of questionable activity even if they hadn't commited a crime, solely to ensure that these people won't commit a crime later. Now our goverment has been dogshit for a while now and it's completely changed the state of the policing around here, where most of the time they will take a report and then email you later to say they've closed the case due to insufficient evidence or whatever.
A legally questionable life-hack to force the police into action is through embellishment. Say for example the second clip, she could if she wanted to exagerrate (or straight up lie) the ordeal and say that she had saw the man again and he brandished a knife... perhaps at a distance, and that there was no CCTV but its her word. Now the threat 'intent to assault with a deadly weapon' will be registered to that police report which they will re-open and strongly consider tracking the man again.

But, maybe next time, Mom & Dad, don’t leave your kid to have to figure out how to save his own life while standing on the wrong side of the locked front door to the house he LIVES in. A key, garage door opener, a lock pick set, anything other than being left to fend for himself. Glad this young man was much smarter than the fools who were trying to do whatever it was they were trying to do.

These videos are quite literally why my husband and I stay strapped. We live deep in the woods/country where it would take police a long time to reach us, and I’m often home alone, so we prioritize our own safety.
We sleep with hidden weapons, we have more hidden in other rooms, we have pre-discussed plans for different situations, we are both trained, certified, and excellent shots. If someone were even to dare try breaking into our home, they’d be met with not one, but two barrels blasting them backwards before they even got past the threshold.
My parents, grandparents, cousins, and more also live within 1-10 minutes of our house, some even live within earshot- They all stay strapped as well, so if someone wanted to come invoke hell, they’d better be prepared for an entire family of it.

A family member of mine has a lot of steel tools and rods laying around so I picked one up just in case someone is trying to attack me at my car and I can't get in and leave immediately. Doesn't help the fact local robberies with knives are alarmingly frequent.

And his family expects him to walk home alone at night, probably on a regular basis. I can't believe such a young boy was walking home alone for one thing and also the fact that he wasn't even able to get inside of his own house when he finally got home because his mom had the door locked for some reason... If you know your kid isn't going to be home and you expect them to walk home, especially alone, at least make sure they have some way to get into their own house. At least give the child a key so that they'll be able to open the door themselves. I'm not saying you can't have your door locked because of course, that's safer than not locking it but the kid has to have a way to get back in.
