It's like Botticelli's Venus descended and gifted us with her voice.
AJ's performance here is absolutely stellar. She has to belt near the top of her range, and she handles the key change perfectly. Very little vocal strain or pressure. Her riffs during the coda are from another planet -- and the way she sustains fry and vibrato and breathiness throughout her runs is her signature: easily the best I've ever encountered.

Welcome back Liza!! Have missed your enthusiasm and emotional reactions to our Angelina. IMO, the difference between Angelina and others is that Angelina is an ARTIST, not just a singer. Her ability to employ EMOTION as her base, then applying all the beautiful ornaments. Weaving in the soft nuances, colors both bright & warm dark ones. Using her breath to softly underscore a plea/need, strongly underscore the lyrics with commanding tones. Her voice is an emotional release for so many of us.. lifting us to a joyful celebration of it, and ever so easily squeezes our heart to the point of tears... This is what TALENT and GENIUS sounds like... And what a captivating, breathtaking voyage it is.. Angelina is at the helm, in charge of every detail; in all of her renditions, she understands that excellence is in the details.. and she gives each one her full attention..
What a beautifully crafted performance, full of EMOTION...
and she strings a ribbon of lights around our heart.. Liza, I enjoy your honesty, and that you dive right into her performance, and always let your emotions splash over and out of you!! Don't be a stranger! PEACE!!

I agree that we can recognize Angelina immediately. I think that I can just recognize her voice now, but after a few phrases we also recognize the signature dynamics of her style because they really are unique. The small runs at the end of notes, the richness and power she gets in her lower register, and her ability to so easily begin with a vocal fry that morphs seamlessly into her full voice-all Angelina. And, as always, there’s such ease in delivering this huge song. I am no longer surprised by her choice of songs. The surprise would be if she gave us what we expected. Once again, I was always impressed by Whitney’s incredible vocal ability, but I feel the weight of the lyrics with Angelina.

Very beautiful reaction, thanks Liza. From the very first words, the warmth, tone, passion and sweetness that Angelina manages to instill in this mythical song are truly incredible, even more for a 16 year old girl. Her phrasing, backed by her wonderful use of breath and her peculiar jazz tone, always fascinates me and gives me chills every time, despite the fact that I has listened to her hundreds of times. Please see his version of Elvis' "Suspicious Minds," which he sang around the same time, which is a wonderful re-reading of the song, on a completely different slant than this one, but just as incredible.💛🧡❤

At Angelina's final concert last summer in Norway, she sang this as the third encore number after a 15-song set. Who sings this Whitney powerhouse as the 18th song of a concert, what 16yo, what any-yo? One's favorite Angelina song other than the last one heard is a hard question! Maybe her studio take on Adele's "All I Ask". But it is hard to find anything of hers (whether in a concert, a studio, or a parking garage) that is not a home-run!

I believe that her cover of "I put a spell on you" at age 9 is probably the best I have ever heard , I heard a very large assortment of pros. Sing this song , but I find her arrangement of the song to be what the song really calls for

    • @alberttenfoot
      @alberttenfoot Год назад +3

I agree with you. Just think, a child of nine is the only singer of this classic song who, instead of copying others, took the original as the base for her arrangement, and by so doing performed what to me is now the definitive version of the song. I doubt it will ever be bettered, whatever the age of the singer.

Hello, LIza. Angelina takes us through the richly embroidered tapestry of "doors," and masterfully ushers us through each one. The silk ribbons, the Czech glass beads, the threads of gold, the nuanced shades of silk thread, each door with its feast for our ears, and then she sends us home with the long, long velvet ribbon of that last note. I am not a fan of this song, though I recognize its difficulty. But Angelina singing it is a feast for the ears, because of all the little details you point out. Because I know she's singing it to a meaning much wider l than original intent. When she sings that last "you," that velvet ribbon of a note, it is her Grandma Mery, it is each member of her family, it is each member of the music world that has, is, and will help her, it is each fan, a personal velvet "you" to each one and all who come. Thank you for your musically informed reaction, it was quite enjoyable. Grandma Ellen, out.

As someone who’s listened and loved all of the tones and nuances of Angelina’s soul- touching interpretations of songs, it’s so satisfying to share listening to them with someone who appreciates them on the same, or even deeper, level- especially if it’s their first discoveries of her!! Your reactions- analytical and emotional- are so wonderful and satisfying to hear and see! This was from months ago, so I don’t know how much you’ve heard now, but I’d say, don’t miss these covers!! : “ A Million Years Ago” (Adele) and “ Stay” ( Rihanna) - both amazingly at about age 12. My favorites from her youth were “ What a Difference a Day Makes” and “ Summertime”- both at 7 or 8 ( Those 2 were from her winning run on Norway’s Got Talent. ) You can’t go wrong with any of her music, but don’t miss these!!

Genius, Exceptional intellectual or creative power, the greatest musical genius of our time is Angelina Jordan. Can one be hypnotized by sound? Shamans use rhythmic drumming and chanting to achieve control over a mind. Angelina's is unique in that she has the ability to create audios that trigger your brains "frequency following response". She has the ability to create a euphoric addiction to her total being similar to drugs, but without the side effects, she is in fact, like nothing I have ever experienced in the past.

The difference for me is this. Other singers, including Whitney's, I listen and think... nice, well done, beautiful. When Angelina sings it, I'm thinking, what man in his right mind is going to walk away from this girl? Is he nuts? She has to imagine his love in her arms? What's wrong with that guy? I need to have a chat with that boy and straighten him out. Angelina... you don't need that fool. You have the world at your fingertips! Seriously, I never felt the meaning until she sang it. She brings it life as though she's living it. She isn't singing a script. She's telling you her story, but it's not her story, thankfully.

If you're not familiar with the story, I'll share that the lore around Angelina not wearing shoes when performing is that at age 6 she met a little girl her own age who was barefoot & whose feet were scarred. Angelina gave the girl her own shoes & “vowed never to appear on stage again wearing shoes until all the world’s children had them.” It harmonizes with her "old soul" gift with music

What are my favorites from her? Wow. That's a very long list. Some of my top, top favorites are popular choices, but a lot of them are rather "deep cuts" that I'm not even sure you'd want to react to. (!) But since you asked…
    * "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)", live at 8 in the semifinal round of _Norske Talenter_ [Norway's Got Talent] - this can be difficult to react to, in terms of avoiding blocks (also note that most AJ fans would probably prefer to see you react to all 4 of her NGT performances, in order [and I don't disagree])
    * "Writing's on the Wall", live at home at 9-almost-10 (December 2015) - this might be the most _imperfect_ performance you'll ever hear from her (mainly because she's still learning the piano part she's playing), but O. M. G. … I love it so much!
    * "Feeling Good", live at 10 on _The Stream Gir Tilbake_ - I'm not sure the song can be sung any better
    * "Valerie" rehearsal for a jazz festival appearance when she was 12 - this one is literally impossbile to find without help: the YT "video ID" is "v=PTZGY7c1ZSU"
    * "When We Were Young", live in concert at Prøysenhuset in 2019 (so, 13) - this one literally reduced me to a blubbering mass, because she sang it So Damned Well…
    * "Love Is a Game", live at home in a [friggin'] TikTok, in December 2021 (15) - the second video (and thankfully the last, so far) to reduce me to a blubbering mass, for the same reason as before
Are these her "best" performances? I wouldn't necessarily say that (well… maybe some of them). They're just the ones that have been most "impactful" for me, personally.
(BTW, I'd like to point out that I did not _intentionally_ set out to make a list that spanned almost her _entire_ public singing career and had examples of her singing in lots of different settings. It just turned out that way.)

’s Angelina Jordan (born Angelina Jordan Astar; 10 January 2006) is a Norwegian-American singer, whose audition for the 2014 season of Norway's Got Talent, singing "Gloomy Sunday" in the style of Billie Holiday, became a viral video online and brought her worldwide press coverage at the age of eight. She went on to win the competition with her performance of George Gershwin's "Summertime". Since then she has worked to raise millions of dollars on behalf of environmental causes and children's charities around the world. She always performs barefoot, after befriending a young shoeless girl and giving her shoes to her. Jordan wrote a book about the experience and became the youngest published author in Norway.

Born Angelina Jordan Astar on January 10, 2006 in Oslo, Norway to her Norwegian mother, Sara Astar and her Swedish father, Gerry Christian Slattman.
Angelina started singing around 18 months of age, after listening to Whitney Houston on RUclips. She quickly became obsessed with listening to music videos and her maternal grandmother, Mery Zamani got Angelina interested in classic jazz.
Mery Zamani is Iranian and was a prodigy as an artist and poet while growing up in Iran. Angelina attended the Oslo Waldorf School and participated in the Oslo School of Music and Performing Arts after-school program, where starting around age 4, she had training in music but no vocal training. Her teachers were smart enough to not attempt to change what she was doing vocally. More recently she along with her grandmother have designed and made the clothing she wears on stage.
Why Angelina always performs barefoot At age 6, while traveling in the Middle East with her mother and grandmother, Angelina noticed a girl around her age standing on the side of the road, asking people to step on her bathroom scale to be weighed in hopes of getting some money. Angelina took off her shoes so as to not get the scale dirty and stepped on the scale many times to make the girl feel better. Angelina befriends the girl who was not wearing shoes and has scars on her feet, and learns she is an orphan. The orphan girl tells Angelina how beautiful she thinks her shoes are. Angelina says her shoes don’t fit her well and she wants to give her shoes to the orphan girl who thanks Angelina for giving her the shoes. Angelina asked the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and the girl replied, “I want to become a doctor, but that will never happen since I have no parents and I have siblings so I have to do whatever is necessary for us to survive.” Angelina told the girl to never give up on her dreams. The poor girl asked Angelina what she wanted to be when she grew up and Angelina replied that she wanted to sing for the whole world. The poor girl said she would pray every day so Angelina’s dream would come true. Angelina still says she thinks of that homeless girl every day and has always performed barefoot to remind her of all the children who are less fortunate.
At age 9, she became the youngest published author in Norway’s history by writing a book about this encounter in the Middle East. PLEASE PURCHASE Angelina’s book from her merchandise store on her official website, angelinajordanofficial Angelina, at age 6 and 7, did record a few songs in a recording studio at her school, most notably “I Who Have Nothing”, a truly remarkable performance for a 7 year old. At age 7, Angelina’s audition on Norway’s Got Talent, was a cover of Billie Holiday’s “Gloomy Sunday”, a song which was banned by a number of European countries during World War II because authorities worried the song would increase the suicide rate. Truly bizarre that this is the song to launch the career of a child musical prodigy. One of the judges on NGT cried. Angelina had turned 8 years old for her next performance on NGT, covering Billie Holiday’s “I’m a Fool to Want You” singing acapella which was required by NGT unless the singer also played an instrument while singing. This was the Judge’s cut round of the competition and was not performed in front of an audience. In the Semi Final round of NGT, Angelina sang “Bang Bang” which was written by Sonny Bono and was first performed by his wife Cher but is best known sung by Nancy Sinatra. The improvement in each performance is incredible even though there were only a couple months between them. In the Finals, Angelina did a cover of George Gershwin’s, “Summertime” and won the contest, capturing 46% of the votes from the ten finalists. When asked what she would like to do with the prize money she won (500,000 kroner or about $80,000), Angelina replied, “I want to give it to the poor children”. Along with her grandmother, who is a known artist, they wrote and published a book about the incident. It made Angelina the youngest person in Norway to publish a book. The proceedes go to her charity, so far she has collected, along with others, over 21 million Euro's.
Angelina had become a star in her native Norway and her videos on RUclips went viral. She gave a few concerts during the summer of 2014 while 8 years old. In December 2014, Angelina realized a life-long desire to sing at the Save the Children's Peace Prize Celebration which is part of the Noble Peace Prize celebration. Angelina’s family took her to United States, Brazil, Germany, France, United Kingdom, Russia, South Korea, Singapore among other corners of Earth, to perform for heads of state and to help raise money for charity. All before Angelina turned 14. At age 9, Angelina recorded a music video covering the 1956 Jay Hawkin’s classic, “I Put a Spell On You”. The video begins by showing Angelina writing her “wishes” for how she wants to perform the song. Angelina has always created her own arrangements for her cover songs. At age 10 and just a week before her 11th birthday, Angelina recorded a demo of “I’m Still Holding Out for You”. Her family never pursued having that recording officially released but someone leaked it on a RUclips video. Thankfully, everyone involved with that song is now ok with the leaked version. Many angels (fans) believe this is one of Angelina’s best performances. When Angelina was 11, she performed a number of concerts in Norway with a jazz/rock band. Those concerts included up to 14 songs, each remarkably performed. Angelina seems to be at her best when on stage, never nervous, only 100% confident. Also at age 11, Angelina recorded her “It’s Magic” album which has, at times, been in the top 10 best selling jazz albums. On June 27, 2018, at age 12, Jordan performed Frank Sinatra “Fly Me to the Moon” for Quincy Jones in The O2 Arena in London. She has said that was the high point of her young career which was already in it’s 6th year. During 2018, Angelina lost her paternal grandfather, her friend Avicii and one of her idols, Aretha Franklin. She did a moving tribute for each. In 2019, Angelina accepted an invitation to compete in the 2nd season of America’s Got Talent (AGT), The Champions. She had, since age 3, wanted to perform for Simon Cowell and she earned his praise with her genius arrangement of “Bohemian Rhapsody”. The surviving members of Queen loved it so much they put a link to it on their Twitter. Angelina was eliminated after covering Elton John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”. Angelina’s family refused to sign any agreement with AGT. Angelina, before age 14, had covered more than 130 songs from 80 different artists, spanning at least 8 genres, all of which are available on RUclips. Angelina has always made changes to each song she covers and often her version is preferred over the original. On RUclips, search on The Complete Works of Angelina Jordan as Rusty Shackleford has put all songs in one file and has a complete playlist in the description of that video. The pandemic hit shortly after her performances on AGT and likely caused a change of plans by her family, most notably her Uncle Michael who is her manager. Her family agreed to a contract with Republic Records in August 2020. Republic Records declared Angelina Jordan their highest priority new artist. Reportedly her family requested Republic to allow her as normal a childhood as possible and therefore have yet to fully promote her. During the pandemic, Angelina was often seen buying meals for the homeless on the streets of Los Angeles. In November 2020, Angelina released “Million Miles” which she wrote after the passing of her beloved maternal grandfather. She dedicated the song to anyone who has ever lost a loved one. Angelina had previously released, 3 other original songs: “What is Life”, “Oslo” and “Shield” In April 2021, her original “7th Heaven” was released. A jazzy, danceable, inspiring song. Angelina has posted numerous short performances on Tik Tok and Instagram. Angelina had concerts in Norway in July 2022.

Not just you :) Very nice reaction - I think one of great things about Angelina's singing is those "small details" you mention... One of the things I particularly enjoy about this one is the beautiful "hum" at one point... she is the most beautiful "hummer" I have ever heard... no idea how she does it ! By the way, she also sang this at her concerts in Norway last summer, dedicating the song to her beloved absent Grandma Mery.. rather different feel to the song in this live context (both are beautiful) : ruclips.net/video/BkvsnY7J510/видео.html

At her last concert on July 10th 2022 in Norway, when Angelina told why she sings this song and dedicated it to her grandmother Mery Zamani (her grandma was sick and couldn't accompany Angelina on the trip to Norway and both were very sad), I understand this song completely differently whenever I hear the line "Don't you dare walk away from me". 👣💯 *AJ* 💯 👣

Nicely said Albert. I too now hear that song from a totally different way.I love this song and I was so excited when she first introduced it then when she dedicated it to her Grandma I was surprised because I had not thought of it in terms of her relationship with her grandmother. However in true Angelina style she gave new meaning to the words and crushed my heart so I could hardly breathe.

@@EarnestMasumoto I don't understand the question correctly. At this point, Mery Zamani was already on the mend and her health was much better, but Mrs Zamani was not yet able to travel and accompany Angelina on her trip. I assume this song is also a favorite of Mrs Zamani. 🤗🤗

Love to see you react to "Suspicious Minds", she took that song and completely made it hers. Thank you so much for this reaction of Angelina. She deserves the exposure and recognition of what a true artist sounds like.

Every time I listen to her singing this song I cry. It isn't the only one to do it either. I'm not sure why or how she can do it to so many. If you want a real treat take a look at her singing this song at 13 in her home studio. I don't know which one is performed better. I do know they are both master class performances.
It is so difficult to try and pick a favorite song by Angelina. It's like I've read in different comment sections "my favorite Angelina song is the last one I listened to". Such a true statement.

She changed the key to this song, but does it really matter as long as she has the ability to give each word, or phrase, meaning like no one else in this universe can. How can she evoke such emotion in each and every performance? Why do I get chills, or cry tears, or lose my breath when Angelina sing a song that I have experienced many times in the past without this happening? If this feeling only happened to me that would be ok, but it happens to billions of people. We play these videos of AJ over, and over again to get our high.
I was a Whitney fan from the beginning of her career to her tragic end. Whitney was great, but Angelina at 16 is far better than Whitney ever was at making you feel each word, and phrase. AJ changes every cover to make it hers and far, far better than the original. AJ is the greatest STORYTELLING ARTEST I have ever experienced in my 75 years.

Well said Larry. I love it when I play AJ's version to friends without them seeing the video and they say, Well she ain't Whitney. No...she's Angelina. Here take a look. Appreciation set in after I tell them she was 16 at the time and remind them of Whitney's age when she recorded this massive hit.

As another old codger who has been collecting music for 50 years and going concerts. I can't remember the last time I got really excited for an album like I am for hers, which is reportedly coming in the summer.
I have her first one she did, called It's Magic, and it's an often play.
