  • Suzanne Ottinger was diagnosed with stage 4 gastric cancer with bone metastasis almost two years ago. Many of her relatives have faced cancer, and Suzanne dealt with various symptoms leading up to her diagnosis, including dysphagia and swallowing problems. She had a colonoscopy and an endoscopy, which revealed a large tumor at the top of her stomach. The cancer had spread throughout her torso, lymph nodes, and bones.
Suzanne had no surgical options, so she had to consider other treatments. She had chemotherapy, but had to delay treatments due to a low white blood cell count. Thankfully, it worked well for her despite the setbacks. Suzanne did a combination of chemo and immunotherapy for six months. Eventually, she began reacting to chemo, so her care team had to alter their approach.
After 18 months of intensive treatments, Suzanne underwent a litany of tests and scans. Thankfully, the news was good: they saw no signs of cancer!
Suzanne recently had a liquid biopsy, and sadly, there are signs that the cancer has returned. She is still determining the next steps with her care team, and is hopeful that chemotherapy will be a viable option again.
Suzanne stresses the importance of mindset and positivity. She focuses on wellness, exercise, and taking care of her body between treatments.
Her advice to others is to keep pushing forward, even if your diagnosis seems dire. If a doctor tells her that she can't be cured, she seeks out other opinions to gain more knowledge. Suzanne sees each opinion as a tool in her toolbox. She hopes future treatments will allow gastric cancer to be managed as a chronic condition.

Thank you so much for being so brave and open about your journey. I was diagnosed with stage 4 Colorectal cancer in April. I was also told we can treat you, but not likely cure you. So far i have been through 28 radiation w/ oral Chemo treatments. Currently heading into my 10th Infusion Chemotherapy sessions.

My Papa Carlyle passed away in 2010 at just 70 of stomach and esophageal cancer. He passed away just 28 days later on June 22, 2010. However, I hope that you manage to survive for years.

@@PeaceCalm42 I do apologize, but I am not able to completely understand your question. Are you asking how far he lived from me when this happened? We lived about 10 minutes down the road from each other. In terms of how long he survived, he didn't survive for more than 27 days..he died on day 28.

Oh sorry i dint put the question right. God takes the ones they like more to be with them. My dad is 68 years old diagnosed with same cancer. Doctor dint give hope just chemo amd see. Now hed perfectly healthy eating, working, etc. But im afraid chemo will take all that. Its all in gods hands.
Chemo will start in three days. Till then just trying to be happy for him. As hes healthy now before chemo.

My scans in October and November showed spread in my bones. But I just finished my 4 round of capecitabine and I had cyberknife radiation to my cervical spine and thoracic. I’m feeling much better and my alkaline phosphatase which is my bone metastasis marker is almost back down to a normal level. I think the capecitabine and Opdivo are going to work for a while longer for me. 🙏
