- Procol Harum with the Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra and Choir, April 5-6 2013
Two concerts paying to 1000+ each night. This is the concluding part of In Held Twas in I, a five section masterwork from the Shine on Brightly album (1968).
shivers...i so wish pop music could be this good nowadays.
one of the best bands ever
Hand in hand with that, Brooker wrote some of the most intereting music in rock, in a recognizable style all his own. Tons of great songs, some with a classical feel like this one, some focussed on storytelling, like "Whaling Stories" or "Grand Hotel", and always something good. Like others have said here, it seems like we should hear them more, even today.
Such a timeless piece of music! Bravo to Procol Harum! and those present!
Thank you for posting this ! I have always loved that delicate & majestic piece. One of my favourite by Procol Harum - which i've been attracted to because of their classical influences. I remember when I first heard this piece at the end of In Held Twas in I on Live With The Edmonton Orchestra, probably circa 1982/83, as a teenager... I wasn't really connected to my schoolmates' tastes in music from that time... I was digging the 70's bands and mostly the progressive ones. I loved some classical pieces and this one was quite close... Splendid performance, a pity it's not released on a DVD with a btter sound.... but we've got the concert from 2006 with the Danish orchestra and choir.
Wish this had been recorded commercially as well as on dvd especially since Gary has passed away. A legend !
It's good I've never been there listening to the finale. I would have wept too much. Too emotional. Great music!
Magistral
Grandiose
Sublime
I was there and it was not disappointing. Great sound and great performers. Unforgettable night !!
Thanks for uploading it. I hope they make a blue-ray of the concert. There is no better place than the historic Stadthalle!!
I love listening to the various version of this masterpiece. Gary's piano is not loud enough once the chorus begins.
Thanks for posting. A never-to-be-forgotten piece from a never-to-be-forgotten concert.
Love your video and great editing too. Thumps Up !
merci Gary pour cette Grand Final bravo!
Listening to this version makes one remember what a great drummer the late BJ Wilson was. This is ok but BJ killed it. He was a nimble and melodic drummer handling some rather ponderous music. The Edmonton album is one of my all time favourites.
MERCI....MERCI...MERCI...POUR CETTE MUSIQUE QUI ENFLAMMA LE MONDE....MERCI PROCOL HARUM...FROM FRANCE WE SAID R.I.P NEAR GOD...
The Edmunton version is from a commercial album, right off the board; the best sound you can get. This one seems to be from a handheld device out in the audience, and the sound +random reflections makes it a bit muddled and certainly unbalanced. No criticism meant here, I'm just responding to comments on relative quality. I love all versions, even ones I haven't heard yet. It's a masterpiece in my eyes, er, uh, ears. ;-)
Agree
Grande Procol Harum, Grande Gary Brocker.
Wish I could've been there!
Just booked for their concert at the Festival Hall in London March 2017
Hope they finish with this
Ha Kno translates as ....
"Was deeply impressed by this great concert. "Goosebumps". The Oragisatoren is due. This was truly "great cinema".
This is still the greatest piece of music I've ever heard. It's been my favorite song in the whole world since I was 17, and that was 17 years ago now. Could anyone tell me where I can find the rest of this performance?
Here at least you find the complete "In Held 'Twas In I" from the same rendition... ruclips.net/video/AqQX_ZgzXqw/видео.html
Wir waren dabei! Weltklasse!!!
I think we need chorus and orchestra in New York on the next tour!
I think we need a next tour.

Excellent thanks
The Greatest of all Time
MERCI POUR CETTE GRAND FINALE !!ok! GARY !! un fan !
Fabulous.... and strangely moving!!
Now a London orchestral concert in November to look forward to.
oui, MERCI GARY !!
Damn if that Geoff Whitehorn didn't nail that Robin Trower classic solo to the wall and made it his own. What a band. Gary Brooker's Procol Harum -- 50 years on!! How many rock bands boast that Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? I assure you, not many.
I really think Dave Ball nailed the guitar in the 1971 Edmunton Symphony recording. I think (dare I say!) he was a better guitarist than Robin Trower. Perhaps he just fit in better with Procol Harum. I wish he had a longer life.
Mott the Hoople another great band still playing after 50 years . . .
incroyable !....merci!
Simplesmente MAJESTOSO, Brutal, arrepiante... Soberbo.
wonderful
That is just Cary Brooker as a grand arranger of music may he rest like that!!!!
A1. Ph. Love this 😍
I agree - this would be a great venue to record a show, and this orchestra & choir skilled & enthusiastic. This of course is only the final segment of the 18minute In Held Twas in I which someone more resourceful may publish here sometime?
Magnificent!
Such a pity that Gary and Keith fell out of friendship with Matthew Fisher. Fisher's Hammond B3 intro on Whiter Shade.... and full works on Repent Walpurgis are awesome and make the former an instantly recognisable classic.
Put your friendship before money guys
Matthew chose to leave the band in 1969 to go into music production. He produced A Salty Dog so was probably satisfying his ceative ambitions at that time. Chris Copping came in and was a great Procol servant. He returned for the 90s revival - recording on Prodigal Stranger and Wells on Fire, toured and appeared at Union Chapel where they recorded a great DVD (and Matthew was superb - his Weisselklenzenacht was even better that night than on the record). Sadly he and Gary had this legal argument about Whiter Shade of Pale which resulted in him leaving the Procol fold. Yes there was a lot of money involved but there were principles and artistic legacies involved. Most fans try not to dwell long on this time but just listen to the music! Procol Harum are still a superb live act (with Josh Phillips on Hammond) and have performed in both Europe and N America in recent years and have a pile of gigs scheduled for 2021.
vraiment la final extraordinaire !!
don't forget March 3 2017 Festival Hall London
There is no Procol Harum without the great BJ
WILSON
Maybe it's mic placement, but the choir sounds so much louder and more dramatic on the original Edmonton recording than it does here.
Epic!
immortale!!!
toujour aussi bien finale
nice looking guitar
they should tour the UK again sometime
no sale
their greatest work musically
would like to see the originals do a tour,
that'd be FAR OUT
Grandi procol harum.
CUUUUUUUUUUUUUDOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What's the title of this music?
Grand Finale. The concluding part of "In Held twas in I" on the Shine on Brightly album (1968). The title comprises the first words of the lyrical parts of the previous four parts. (the first Glimpses of Nirvana has two distinct segments)
wow, brilliant but in my opinion the edmonton version is unsurpassable dont know why, but there you go, great solo by whitehorn, a master of his trade, come back to Edinburgh Gary missed you at the students union 30 yrs ago but will Q this time.
Somehow disappointing performance of a true masterpiece.
You woud be advised to watch Hermann's film of the entire In Held with better sound and camera work. ruclips.net/video/AqQX_ZgzXqw/видео.html
immmmmmmmmmmmmmm
This has always been one of my all time favorites - indeed to such degree that I made a cover version of it: ruclips.net/video/M5TVXRTA3Ic/видео.html
Stary koń tez kopie!!!!
Why does the fill in guy have to crap up a classic guitar solo with his own annoying "stylings"?
Geoff Whitehorn has been Procol guitarist for 20+years recording 3 albums and three DVDs, a couple of which are truly wondeful. The original guitarist Robin Trower left to pursure his solo career. Subsequent players - Dave Ball, Mick Grabham and Geoff have all added much to the Procol history. They were never "fill-in guys". And Geoff is a better all-round player as he has pariicularly shown in orchestral concerts. His solos of Quite Rightly so and Wiesselklenzenacht at Union Chapel are especially brilliant.
the more bad performance that i ever hear
