Yes, too bad Medvedev lost it mentally, at 5-4 in the third, that's a classic Fed choke, maybe Federer's spirit entered into him, have you noticed everyone has choked, Murray, Nadal, Novak in last week's final, something's spooky about Federer, he's got that hex on these players for sure!
Tsitsipas is bringing out his best tennis lately. He gets better and better each week. I'd say he reached 90%+ performance this past month. It's been more than a year since he played so good. Last time it was at the RG final last year. This whole season he was playing like at his 75%, but he is where he is now because even though he didn't play his best, he was VERY consistent all year. Final lost against Rune (who even beat Djokovic). Semi final lost against Djokovic, close match with tiebreak even if 2-0. B2b defeat in Torino, again 2-0, but again very close match decided by the opening game (broken) and a mini-break in another tiebreak. Acceptable defeats. Now he won bs Russian in a thriller best match in these finals so far. He has improved his mentality, his serve, his volleys, his consistency in rallies, and he is more confident mid-match in the usual ups and downs a player may experience. One thing I see him lacking at the moment that could use a big improvement is his returns. Anyway, it's nice to finally see Stefanos snap out of whatever was psychologically hindering him from playing his best tennis, the tennis we saw at his debut, at his first 3 RGs/clay seasons (with the 4rth being this year's), and at his nitto atp finals win in London. Ofc he still has a lot to improve on but I'm happy for him. He is very introverted and things aren't easy for him.
@Bill: This was a great match. He showed amazing fighting spirit. Real inspirational stuff we witnessed today. Still I believe that he needs a step change with regard to his team. He seems to kind of resist this subject of improving his team. Perhaps this is even something that makes him training harder and fight stronger. At the end of the day results will speak for themselves. So far he lost a lot of matches where lack has been obvious. I am happy he did well today and came out of top of this match. Introvert is a nice difference to all this hyping up we see from so many players.
When Meddy was serving for the match at 5-4 and commentators were already singing his praises for the win... I still believed and was rooting for Stefanos to come back. What a win for Stef! Bravo! There are only a few handful of players who can employ the tactic of coming to the net to beat Medvedev... and Stefanos' hand skills at the net are elite. He won 80% of his net approaches... that's a staggering stat. Lezgo Stef!
Medvedev totally got tight as a drum, couldn't find the aces when he needed them, and shanked his forehands horribly, reminiscience so much of Wimbledon 2019 when Federer broke Djokovic and was serving 8-7 in the 5th set- Medvedev seems to want to copy Roger's choking to perfection.
I can’t blame the commentators. I mean, the way this match was going, breaking serve felt impossible. Tsitsipas’ serve-volley was giving Medvedev nightmares, but Tsitsipas had no read on Medvedev’s serve. Tsitsipas’ hand skills are truly incredible. I was amazed at his transition game and all. His spot serving and spins, mixed with his forehand approaches, and topped with incredible volleys. What he did today was so hard to stop.
Wow incredible match, I'm glad I didn't check the final result before watching 😂. Edit - S. Tsitsipas is beginning to show mental strength against Medvedev in his last 2 matches against him unlike previously, you could see he has overcomed his fears.
not really, he could have finished the match in 2 sets at 5-4 with 2 serves and f-ed up.. He still has some work to do. Those extra sets he keeps-playing add up.
Not at all. He only won because Medvedev choked while serving for the match , but otherwise Tsitsipas wasted the 2nd set tiebreak when he was 5-4 (2 serves to win the match) and Lost the set plus he went 1 game away from the defeat because of his mental "strenght"🤣 . Tonight it was more of a gift from the Russian i would Say

Returning serve far behind the baseline is not the problem in itself. What an amazing and close match. A shame that these two still seem to not like each other very much. That match was deserving of a better handshake at the end than whatever they did there
Medvedev is full of anger. This becomes obvious in almost all matches. I do like his attitude in press conferences. He seems a very bright - open guy. Really has grown on me in terms of respect. On the court though ... whether he wins or looses - he has this attitude. I feel it is driven by anger. Sad in a way he does not get this worked on. He would be a better competitor I am sure. One more word on this hyping the crowd. I find that absolutely idiotic.
@@willwahl9225 I agree with most of what you have said, and Medvedev has really grown on me as well, but he shouldn't have to hype the crowd or be booed in an Australian Open Final. The crowd deserves half the credit in Nadal's latest AO victory but Medvedev was all smiles and congratulations. Medvedev seemed slightly off this tournament but when he is on he is magic. Tsitisipas and Medvedev seem to have a lot of bad blood, from Tsitsipas calling him a stupid Russian to their conflict over off-court coaching. I really gained a lot of respect when Medvedev subdued his US Open victory celebration in deference to Djokovic. He was on a real roll before the pandemic and considering he probably lost one of his peak years he is pretty positive. He was the first player outside the Big 4 to dethrone the Big 3 since Andy Murray for the number 1 ranking and was banned from much of the grass court season through no fault of his own. Three very competitive tie breakers show how close he was to Rublev and Tsitsipas in this event and I wouldn't bet anything I wasn't prepared to lose against him against anyone in this draw so I can understand his frustration losing back to back matches. Hopefully he makes his third Australian Open Final running in 2023 and lifts the trophy.
This was actually one of their best handshakes ever😁😅 And yeah, that absurd habit of constantly hyping the crowd is totally out of control. Very bad taste.
@@tcarlawThey both are whiners on court depending on how they wake up. They can both be annoying. The crowd has the right to cheer for whomever they want and boo as much as they like, especially with someone who shows them the middle finger or yawns in the other player's face or calls them idiots or makes monkey moves at them. He is childish. He wants people to support him, but he insults them all the time. And he is the one who gets to lose patience and matches, the crowd does not. So who has the last laugh? I used to like him, then his attitude made me change my mind. This is a situation of his own making. People supported (and support) the big 3 also because of their no drama attitude. Drama queens are annoying. Djovokic has had people supporting the other player all his life, against many players, he always resented this, he would like everyone to love him. But he is a winner and he did not let the crowd supporting the other guy stop him. Medvedev said he changed after the baby came, it really does not seem so.
@@willwahl9225 I disagree. Medvedev matured a lot since his debut and although he has had his share of bad tantrums this year it’s only understandable because he struggled greatly this season. It doesn’t excuse them at all, he definitely needs to improve his mental fortitude, but the context of difficult circumstances adds that layer of nuance. I just don’t think Steff had gotten over their past drama. I remember a funny moment where Med shared a photo from nitto finals a couple years ago (It could have been the laver cup too, I don’t remember) on his Instagram but he couldn’t tag Steff because he still had Medvedev blocked lol
My heart was just POUNDING during that first tiebreak. 13 points by Medvedev, 11 by Tsitsipas. And Daniil saved THREE match points. Still, kudos to Stefanos and good luck v. Rublev.
Saved match points, and didn't reach any himself, serving for the match! He seemed to have beef with his coach, like didn't they work out a game plan for Steph? Or was it he was just annoyed that Steph kept getting balls back and his coach didn't teach him how to counter.
@@pauljohnson6019 Medvedev has been just pathetic lately. Keeps gesturing towards the coach box after making silly unforced errors all the time. He just doesn't have the belief anymore to win such matches. In 2020, he would have never lost from such a winning position.

The other players understand better how to beat him. Hitting short and then deep can create gaps in his court positioning. Give him no pace and his awkward technique throws his strokes off. He'll improve when he starts going to net more often.
ATP's ban on the Russian flag throughout this year's Grand Slam tournaments has obviously wrought havoc on Russian players. Disgusting how the other players just went along with it.

He also should be more aggressive and more risky if he really wants to be a major force - winning Grand Slam finals and ATP 1000 events.
Tsitsipas could've ended this match in the second set if he could just flatten the backhand out more and take it earlier. Just gives his opponent too much time to recover in that wing. Doesn't stretch it wide enough and flatten it out enough when he has his opponent stretched.
@@gabsie7224 I'm not some guy in the stands. I've been playing the sport and teaching it my whole life. I'm simply making a very obvious observation.
This was actually one of their best handshakes ever😁😅
And yeah, that absurd habit of constantly hyping the crowd is totally out of control.
Rublev.
same!!!
@@21crus1 I believe Nadal did this to him, in 2021AOOpen, after being 2-0, scar tissue, and having to skip Wimbledon, looks like God really has it in for him.

What a match
meddy needs to change his playing style, people are figuring him out and its costing him dearly. still a fantastic player no doubt
pleased to see stefanos winning the match
Stefanos is my favourite player
#unpopularopinion
These two men are exactly at the same level, or top 5 or even top 10 players are very close, except Djokovic is exceptional.
What a match for Tsitsipas! Solid defence and patience against a solid opponent
What a match from both players
Φοβερος τσιτσι!!!!
Tennis is exciting again!
Wow this is a BIG win for Stefanos💜 over Daniil. Stefanos knows how to fight; nearly let it slip, but he kept fighting until the very last ball. Kudus to Stef!🥳
High Level Tennis 💯
Tsitsipas surely has matured emotionally........His game seems a lot refined too.....I still remember the days seeing him smash the rackets, cussing players and htting the benches. Now he just looks coolll! Hope he keeps this up
like roger 😀
@@Pegasos4 May be but, it would be nice if he grows to be stef himself and not an imitation of someone else.....Also, Roger's game is just magical....He definitely is one of a kind!

3:06 what a point wow
good job Stef
guys i think he figured out how to fight
As much as I was rooting for Med, it's better Tsitsipas won, so it can work as a wake up call for Daniil and have him fully develop the net game variant to his tennis arsenal, he lost this match in the same fashion as the heartbreaking AO '22 final against Nadal.
ATP's ban on the Russian flag has obviously wrought havoc on Russian players. Disgusting how the other players went along with it.
Congratulations, Stef!! This rivalry is a gift that keeps on giving. Hope to see them longer at their best form and best tennis.
The difference it makes if your have coaching team member other than what you used to have.
Well done Stef
Great highlights, wow!
Stef could have won during the first tie break when they were 5-5... i sweated sooo much while watching it but Stef gave his best and i'm very proud of him🤍. Chapeau to Medvedev for his aces tho.
Both choked, no way they are ready for Djokovic, he would have dusted both off in straights, I think only Felix is capable of winning Novak in the finals, based on his Laver Cup win.
@@pauljohnson6019 i agree with you… the last 9 matches Stef played against Nole were all defeats and Medvedev is not in the right shape for me… he’s making mistakes that i wouldn’t expect from him. It’s just right to admit that they are very good players and taking part to this tournament is the demonstration of it.
@@pauljohnson6019 you should comment on sport you actually know something about...like how can you give credit to laver cup like nobody that knows tennis does
Have nice holidays med,kisses from Greece,see y
Amazing tsitipas
This is turning into a great rivalry
Wow!!!! What a match!
Ιn the tiebreak at 10-9, great defense by Tsitsipas. I've been watching tennis for 40 years from the best defenses I've ever seen. I wish he would win the point and the match of course.
I bet you never saw a Wimbledon finals lost from 40-15, only Rogerina could make something like that happen!😂
nice handshake xD and excelent match
The small kid knows how to fight
Crazy match
Tsitsi Tsitsi Tsitsi Tsitsi
Well it is funny is not it?
Djokovic is inside Tsitsipas' head
Tsitsipas is inside Medvedev's head.
One hell of a performance from the Greek though.
Djokovic is inside everyone's head 🤣
i love this rivalry
When you lack confidence its tough especially against the highest ranked players ... hope daniil finds himself next year .. this one was a disaster fest for him since the AO
His debacle started right after taking USO2021... same than Cilic, Wawrinka, Del Potro, Alcaraz...
it's been a soso year for medvedev, he only won a 500title and entered the grandslam final for once, he didn't even enter a 1000 final, hope he can recover from this in 2023
The other players understand better how to beat him. Hitting short and then deep can create gaps in his court positioning. Give him no pace and his awkward technique throws his strokes off. He'll improve when he starts going to net more often.
Cuz he faced Nadal goodbye to tennis and then got injured
Nadal destroyed him mentally
ATP's ban on the Russian flag throughout this year's Grand Slam tournaments has obviously wrought havoc on Russian players. Disgusting how the other players just went along with it.
There's a lot to be said about mental strength, emotional intelligence and resilience. We all have to conquer ourselves first before we realise our dreams. Should be taught in schools.
Emm, they should first instill sportsmanship and fair play. ATP's ban on the Russian flag throughout this year's Grand Slam tournaments has obviously wrought havoc on Russian players. Disgusting how the other players just went along with it.
That tie break waa incredible!!
Medvedev is by far my favourite player among the new generation, and would have been my favourite if he played during the great 3 era. I adore his play style
Hats dow for Tsitisipas offensive game, joy to watch! However I am really bewildered by Medvedev lack of variety on the return game, what I mean is how he doesn't change at all his position! There are already few players who expose him with serve and volley, it started all with Nadal, now Tsitsi...come one man - show some adaptation!
Good, go and coach him now, he might pay you big bucks!😁😆
Everyone is a critic. I was there in the afternoon and my gosh the amout of experts on the stands....
@@gabsie7224 I'm not some guy in the stands. I've been playing the sport and teaching it my whole life. I'm simply making a very obvious observation. Show me how many flat backhands he had and show me how many times he redirected off that wing as well. It's definitely the weak part of his game. You disagree?
@@throwinfitz1144 I wasn't talking about you, unless you were in the stands yesterday afternoon in Turin, coming from Bologna (judging by the accent) and judging everything Koolhof and Rublev were doing. Not every comment is about you personally, sorry.
Was this the final?!?!
3:34 - 3:36 what a beauty of a point.
