My roommate from college and still close friend once commented that film music - regardless of style or genre - made him sad. He explained that most film music solely exists on the recording made at the time, never to be performed again. This inevitably created what he called, "dead music." He said that music, in order to truly remain alive, must also continue to be performed. Most fans of film music, myself included, look to the original recordings for their most authentic expression. But I do understand what he meant and want film music to remain alive. So this recording, pardon the pun, is like a séance, conjuring what otherwise might be considered dead music to live and breathe once again.
Very much agree with this! Music needs to be performed to be kept alive. For some scores, the only way we will get to hear the music-with decent fidelity-is via a new performance. All the great classical repertoire has undergone countless interpretations, so why not good film music? Let’s celebrate keeping film music alive!
