The most complete directory of Arcade games ever put together. Thanks Gary.

By the time it gets to 1999 you can see what was left of arcades. Competitive puzzle games, rail shooters, racing games, and fighting games.......and that is just about it.

Thanks for the crazy patreon Steamkey, Gary. It's lo-fi pixel horror game HOUSE, which has 97% positive reviews on Steam. Gruesome and silly, you gotta be in a certain mood for this one LOL!!

This one is a personal favorite of mine! Surprisingly gory (and actually frightening) for a pixel-art game - it's also a fairly quick play. I hope you enjoy!

Hey :D thx for all the 90s stuff. Brought back memories. But I scoured your whole playlist hoping to find one game I used to play, and I didn't. I was hoping you'd know of it, it was a platformer where you played with insect people, with human faces. You had a shop to buy stuff, and you could choose the stages. I can't find it anywhere.

Hmmm...that sounds like a really interesting game, but unfortunately, it doesn't ring a bell. Sorry 😞
If I do come across a game with insect people, I will update here!

@@GaryRetroGamer Thx :) I remember Top Hunter was on the next arcade, and Alien vs Predator behind me. I'm guessing it's from the mid 90s, but then :D I guess I'll never find it.

@@GaryRetroGamer I've been looking for such a long time, years, but today, right now, just by trying to remember details to tell you, I found it. :D thank you! The game in question is Blue's Journey - SNK Neo Geo AES - 1990

Games were so great on consoles in ’99, but pretty average here in the arcades. A few standout shmups, run’n’guns and fighters as usual, and I wish Sega’s fanciful Toy Fighter had gotten a home conversion (… maybe if Dreamcast had survived another year?...) Otherwise, not too much to get worked up about. Power Stone a Dreamcast classic of course, but I never played the arcade version. OutTrigger was a weird game on Dreamcast (as I recall, you need to fiddle with the control mapping to get the thing decently playable), but I bet that game was somewhat better in arcades. I’m a huge fan of Puzzle Bobble 2 (its PS1 port maybe the most played PS1 game in my house in 99-00-01), as well as Virtua Striker 2 and Virtua Tennis (both of which might even be called genre-defining). … and of course we have the beginnings of DDR, which would dominate arcades for years (the very years arcades were kind of in their death throes in the U.S.)
Thanks for another video trip down memory lane, Gary, with plenty of unknown titles to check out as well. What a great series these ten arcade videos from the 90s have been, and I’ll continue to use them as a resource for years to come. I hope that many retro arcade fans will come here to watch these videos and celebrate the 90s era!

It did seem that Sega was essentially just using the arcade to advertise its Dreamcast offerings, what with its ports (except Toy Fighter). Having traced through the 90s arcade scene, it's been interesting to see Sega's arcade output ebb and flow - and to see it round out the 90s with a bang. For me, Sega will always be THE arcade kings - and it did make me smile to remember them at their heyday...
This has been a lot of fun! It's been an interesting journey through the 90s. I was a major arcade rat in the 80s, but didn't go much at all past 92 - so it was interesting to see what I had missed. It was also interesting to watch the slow decline of arcades through the late 90s; the explosion of gimmicky "music" games in 99 was a very clear indication of the transition from video games to "peripheral entertainment" - which was inevitable as consoles rose further to prominence...plus, there will always be KlonDike.

I always find something new in these videos. This time is was Change Air Blade... it is actually an interesting shooter. Not sure precisely what is going on, but it definitely attempts to be different. There were some lightgun games I haven't tried too, like Invasion.

    • @GaryRetroGamer

Yes! Charge Air Blade has some really interesting mechanics which are unfortunately hard to capture in a ten second clip. The perils of compilation videos.

21 I'd like to try, 9 I knew were arcade games and 1 I have (Mr Driller on GBC). Some of these look pretty good and there's a good variety of games from Shmup to fighting to 3D. There used to be this arcade in this mall near my college and they had that Golgo 13 game with the Rifle. I never tried it but my Yugioh homie did and it had some good stuff.

This series (one for each year in the 90s on the channel) is not covering any console. It's for arcade games. Some of them got home ports, but these are the versions of games that you had to go to a coin-op arcade to play in 1999.
