Jason Garrett the former Dallas Cowboys Head Coach and current NBC Sports NFL Analyst served as quarterbacks coach for the Miami Dolphins from 2005-06 and had a front row seat to the team’s process in selecting a free agent QB prior to the 2006 season. Nick Saban’s Dolphins were deciding between Drew Brees of San Diego Chargers or Daunte Culpepper of the Minnesota Vikings.
Both quarterbacks were recovering from significant injuries, Brees, a reconstructed shoulder and Culpepper, a reconstructed knee. The Dolphins ultimately signed Culpepper, who would start in just four games that season and never play for Miami again. Brees went on to sign with the New Orleans Saints and put together one of the most prolific careers for a quarterback in NFL history, leading the NFL in passing seven times, touchdown passes four times, was named to 12 more Pro Bowls, five All-Pro seasons, and helping the Saints win Super Bowl XLIV where he was named Super Bowl MVP.
In this episode of The Fish Tank, Garrett details the decision-making process from his perspective.
