Danute Culpepper was one of the best quarterbacks of his time. We really don’t hear much of him from anymore. He really built some confidence in throwing the ball to Cris Carter and Randy Moss during his time with the Minnesota Vikings. He was like Cam Newton of his era except he was a little bigger than Cam. He stood 6 foot 4 and 265 pounds for a dual-threat quarterback who love throwing the ball in the air as well as running the ball with his legs. He played 11 seasons in the NFL with the Vikings, Miami Dolphins, Oakland Raiders, and Detroit Lions. He last played for the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the United Football League. That’s what the last thing we heard from him.🏈🏈🏈
@@steventorbertjr.558 I grew up during the early McNabb eagles days so I grew up kinda like Dante and McNair (both black qb’s). I don’t like the Vikings now though 😂. I like AP but can’t stand Favre.
If those Viking teams would have had Rich Gannon they would have won 2-3 Super Bowls maybe more 🤔 Culpeper was OK but not really. That offense could make any bum QB look like a Pro Bowler
I remember a throw he made in a Thanksgiving Day game in 2000 against the Cowboys. He was on the right sideline and threw across his body to the left sideline, about 50 yards, to Moss.. On a rainy day! still the greatest throw I've seen in a football game.
Thnx for posting this. I've been waiting for this time to come. Culpepper is definitely one of the most forgotten not just qbs, but nfl players in history. If he played today, he would be Josh Allen like with his physical presence running and throwing the ball
Culpepper is like what Jamarcus Russell was supposed to be in terms of the size and arm strength. Both were tall, big QB's with arms and tendencies that looked elite. The issue is that Culpepper was able to study and work on issues he had, even if sometimes he still resorted to mistakes that made your head scratch(2002 for ex, 23 INT's, 23 fumbles) but usually made up for it with seasons like 2004, whereas Russell was just lazy and only had size because he didn't put in the effort into making himself an absolutely unstoppable player.
Plain and simple, it was because Carter retired and Moss left Minnesota. They made guys like Jeff George, Daunte Culpepper, and Randall Cunningham, who are good QBs, into superstars. Once Moss left for Oakland was the beginning of the end for Daunte.
I don’t believe it is that simple my friend. Those receivers were great but so was Cunningham that’s why they almost went undefeated for crying out loud!
Loved this. Had great memories watching him with the Vikings. Ideas for future football videos: - Jeff George. Top 5 arm in NFL history, bottom 5 attitude which is why he bounced around so much. - Raghib Ismail. The most electrifying player of his era, probably should've won the 1990 Heisman @ Notre Dame. Went to Canada on a lucrative deal instead of the NFL then when he got to the NFL had flashes of brilliance.
Culpepper was extremely talented. Just look at what he did against top schools while he was at the University of Central Florida. The knee injury was awful and took away one of his main skills--- the use of his legs. He would have been truly great!
I’m a millennial at 36 years old this year and these were the days. Playing madden football in the early 2000s and watching these teams like the Vikings was just a nostalgic amazing time. We also got to see Vick even though I hate the guy he was great as well. It was a different game and some say the last years of real football
Dan Marino tore his knee and return still became an elite QB. Dante could've been a pocket passer and been successful. Bottom line he didn't have Moss and Carter anymore and was never the same.
Culpepper was really exciting to watch but I remember he was always known for being a roll of the dice on rather he would have the best game you’d ever seen or the absolute worst ever. It was really weird seeing someone that talented ball out one year setting records then next season stink up the place setting records for interceptions and fumbles but what I always liked about him is he had a short memory cause it seems like he would always come back and have another great season. I do remember once Carter left it was bad but when Moss left I felt bad for Culpepper cause you knew he wasn’t going to have the weapons he once had and as a QB it makes a big difference when you’re throwing to a Chris Carter or Randy Moss compared to throwing the ball to a bunch of easily forgettable receivers. I do remember him being a really exciting player to watch.
I think he was the first "big" QB (linebacker-esque) I ever saw. I'm a Bears fan; I hated this dude. But, it was because he was a true threat. Excellent player to highlight.
An NFC North rival of his that was pesky at running back and underappreciated for his over achievements in my opinion at the time would have been Ahman Green. Definitely deserves a video
Vikings offense was stacked like 2-3 pro bowlers on the oline also Smith at rb and moss with Carter. Any qb would look good with those weapons. He was a turnover machine, how he continued to start with turnover ratios like that
As a native of Orlando Daunte Culpepper put UCF on the football map for me and many other Central Floridians. His NFL career may have been inconsistent (I never realized how turnover prone he was during his career while it happened) he'll always have a special place in my heart. He certainly had Hall of Fame talent and should have ended his college career with a bowl game.
A guy who never went pro but was a HS legend and broke almost all of Culpeppers UCF records was Ryan Schneider. Id love to see a video on him. Probably never will.
I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American and male. Does anybody remember Jason Thomas of UNLV, around 2001? In an ESPN radio interview, the interviewer said to him, "You've drawn comparisons to Daunte Culpepper," and Jason said, "That's a compliment, but I have a long ways to go, before I reach his level." I'm glad Jason took that well. I know that I'm a VERY outspoken Asian MALE, on racial issues. (don't even get me started on internment camps and World War II) Back to SPORTS: I frankly didn't want people to compare MY softball game to Ichiro, just for "that reason." Or say that my church league pickup basketball game was like Jeremy Lin. As much as I HATED Dan Majerle, Rick Fox, and Tyrone Corbin (because they KILLED the Sonics and Blazers), my church league pickup game, in my prime, resembled those three players: In a prime year, my church league game was equivalent to 16 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, 10-12 year NBA career, and 1-2 All-Star games. For the record, I really liked Daunte Culpepper's game. I thought Tim Couch would be good. I also liked Donovan McNabb and Cade McNown, from that 1999 draft.
Back in the day, I knew a source who was privy to what was going on with the coaches and Daunte’s development. Daunte did not have the ability to read the whole field, so post-snap, he was only asked to read half the field to simplify the offense and maximize what he could give you. Daunte had some great times but he never evolved to get any better. Daunte also negotiated a terrible incentive laden contract he came to regret and he became obsessed with it. In addition, Chip Banks who was to be his OC and knew how to work with Daunte, died in the off-season one year and then of course, Daunte got his knee destroyed. The Vikes also traded Moss which didn’t help…
That knee injury really fucked up his career. He broke out in 2000 with a great season and then as the Vikings declined he had a bad couple seasons before putting together a pair of great seasons in 03 and 04. But then the Vikings traded Moss and in the midst of a bad season he had that horrific knee injury and he was just never the same player sadly he was just 28 when that happened. He never developed his passing ability and decision making. Which once his athleticism was taken away by injury left him with a very poor skill set as despite the rocket arm he just couldn’t do anything else consistently good.
I loved watching Culpepper and those Vikings teams, Culpepper was a beast, but i would agree he could be overrated if we are looking at his success; he was the Vikings starter for 6 seasons and only 1 season did they have a winning record
