    Just to clarify for those who don't know this tad bit of info.
    The AR in AR-15 stands for ArmaLite Rifle not Assault Rifle.
    ArmaLite is a company that designed and manufactured those style of guns.
    Just because it is flat black and looks menacing doesn't mean it is a military weapon or assault rifle. And there are other rifles, that have wood stocks, that fire the exact same caliber bullet as an AR-15...
    Having people dictate gun law, despite the 2nd Amendment, who know nothing about guns is dangerous.

    • @carlh7795
      @carlh7795 Месяц назад +5

      And the AR platform rifles are the most popular guns in the US, each year, making up 20% of all firearms sold, and over 50% of all rifles sold. It's a very good all-around design. Reliable, fairly accurate, easy to clean and repair, and not patented (so any manufacturer can make them). For the price of a very budget low quality bolt action rifle, I can build a pretty good AR and have money left over. They've been popular since 1964. They're used in less than 3% of gun crimes. Like my friends and neighbors (most of us are Democrats, btw), I use and rely on my guns regularly... and the ones I use by far the most are the ARs (10 and 15). Trump shooter had an EoTech red dot on a basic AR. It's a good thing he didn't have some other, much more capable rifle.

      @carlh7795 AR's aren't particularly accurate or the overwhelming majority of owners are shit shots. Deer hunting season you will hear who is firing ARs (and they really shouldn't be allowed for deer as they are 22s aka a rabbit gun). Every time they fire there's at least half a dozen shots and you know damn well they're not going after 6 deer. The old saying goes "1 shot 1 deer, 2 shots maybe one deer, 3 shots no deer" to which I add "6 shots, what the fuck is wrong with you".

    I don't understand why the Roe talking point is always abortion. Roe was about privacy and government power. As in privacy to keep the government from watching when our wives, sisters, and daughters get pregnant and not giving the government the power limit our freedoms. There are so many ways this impacts people who will never want or need abortions. Like how they're trying to restrict travel, get government access to medical records, and make your uber driver try to figure out you're not pregnant so it's safe to drive you across state lines or to a hospital.
    Why do they not talk about privacy & limited power? Why always talk like it's about getting that one medical procedure? I agree it's important, but the discourse seems very narrow and only playing to their base (on both sides).

      Then it shouldn’t have federalised abortion..

    • @smnkm4ehfer
      @smnkm4ehfer Месяц назад +2

      It should have never been decided(or even seen) by the SCOTUS. Them making a ruling on it was unconstitutional, and it being reversed was simply correcting the wrong they originally made. Either way it's a states right issue, not a federal issue. And the states that legalized it remain unchanged, and the states that vote against it finally get to have things the way they voted for as it should be.

    • @jer1014t2th
      @jer1014t2th Месяц назад

      That's actually a good question.
      And the answer is: the constitution did not then and does not now empower the federal government to have *ANY* opinion on the topic. Congress might pass legislation regarding interstate commerce; i.e. ensuring availability of a product such as contraception pills; etc.. Maybe Congress could pass privacy laws on the topic so it is challenging for states to enforce bans.
      But the states are where the decision of legal vs. not legal is supposed to happen.
      The legal reasoning for Roe V. Wade was so thin as to be functionally nonexistent.
      On that alone - regardless of its social significance - it had to go.
      Get laws passed.
      Do not get 9 unelected men in funny robes to bypass the legislative process.

    • @ericsmith6394
      @ericsmith6394 Месяц назад

      @jer1014t2th my understanding was a lot of settled privacy law is based on the opinion in Roe. A lot of the laws trying to restrict reproductive care rely on the premise that the government has standing not only to insert itself into women's productive care but to have access to any information they feel is required to inform such intrusions. In short, without Roe there is no privacy.
      As "privacy" is not specifically listed in the 14th amendment with life, liberty, or property this makes the dangerous assumption that our rights do not exist unless explicitly stated. The past supreme court understood privacy as a right, so the 14th amendment blocked gov interference in areas where an explicit public interest didn't exist. The gov could invade your privacy with probable cause you committed a crime, but not otherwise. The gov could not keep data on your fertility or who you have sex with.
      The first amendment doesn't explicitly state the freedom of association, although it's widely interpreted as ensuring that. With privacy out of the 14th and this textual literalist interpretation of the constitution this should allow the government to track your associations & monitor your private communications. Dropping freedom of association is also useful to them monitoring reproduction...as well as consolidating political power.
      Similarly, the constitution doesn't explicitly say states can't make rules about interstate commerce. It says Congress has that power, so justices assumed states did not. This seems uncertain now. Can states band together to blockade others? If we allow a state to block trade in contraceptives can others block guns?
      Cancelling Roe required interpreting privacy out of our rights and the government abuses this allows are staggering. I feel the current court chose to ignore this out of political convenience or motivated reasoning. It seems to ignore the foundation of many freedoms.

By claiming, against all evidence, that the 2020 presidential election was stolen, by pressuring Mike Pence to stop the certification of the results, by encouraging people to march to the Capitol to prevent the peaceful transition of power on January 6th 2021, etc. One of the primary characteristics of a democracy is the peaceful transition of power, and Trump did everything he could to undermine that process. Another pillar of modern democracies is a balance of power between the legislative, executive, and judicial branch, which the Republican party undermined even before Trump by selecting partisan judges and officials, a process that was accelerated under Trump. Not to mention gerrymandering and other efforts at voter suppression, where blame can admittedly be more widely attributed.

The peaceful transition of power is an essential hallmark of any democracy, and clearly Trump wasn't willing to allow that. Fortunately, even given gerrymandering and other voter suppression methods employed, at the time the US was still strong enough to withstand his authoritarian tendencies. I wish some numbers would be available about how much $$ Congress has spent on unwarranted "investigations" and how many hours your State Representatives have spent working on issues that are important to you. Would any of us have our jobs if we continually showed up to work and did anything and everything except what we were hired to do?
