You also have to recognize that people at WotC "love" Modern but that doesn't mean that WotC isn't going to power creep it with MH3+ to sell into the eternal format. Same with EDH. You can say they're learning to not print mistakes but I don't see any proof, Nadu was designed for commander, jeweled lotus was designed for commander, dockside was designed for commander. This is a pattern to sell product.

There is one difference: people in Modern are forced into latest sets because they HAVE to do the best thing. One or two players will want to win at any cost and that means getting the latest cards; there is no way to have a collusion of "We Modern players refuse to play MH cards" because if one person does, everyone else will too. In EDH, players play cards for different reasons and there's way less appeal in replacing your entire deck all the time with the latest and greatest like there is in Modern. People will get some of the best cards but it is a much different beast than Modern, where the turnover is pretty much instant when something better comes out.

realistically speaking they always had the power to overrule the RC. I mean among the rules is the "only legendary creatures can be your commander, not planeswalker" and WotC went, "nah, these planeswalker will have the literal effect that says they can".

I don't doubt that there are good people who work at Wizards, and I'd be more than happy to be wrong about all of this, but if the OGL controversy taught us anything, it's that this is the worst-case scenario and the exact number of things we should trust Wizards with is zero.

Maybe have a point total. If your deck has over 50 pts of cards it is tier 2, over 100 points tier 3 and over 150 points tier 4. this would allow an outlier of a single tier 4 card from making a modified Pre con with on tier 4 card to be considered the same as a top line CEDH deck with 20 plus tier 4 cards.

@georgecrichton8508 I've heard the point totals thing as well, and I think it's a great idea. However, it's very tough to pull off since, to actually formulate your deck's total cost you'd need a ranking for every card in history. Granted any card not listed/without a similar card in one of the tiers could just be claimed at as tier 1, but that would still mean we'd need a ton of cards in this bracket system.
I do think the totals will yield the best results, however most decks will fall between 60-140 this way assuming 40 lands. Throwing MDFC's and powerful lands into the mix will make things even more tricky. We really would need every card to be in a specific tier.

It's probably gonna end up being fine. Like you said, the RC didn't do a single thing between when I started gaming and these last bans. Additionally, I think an official bracket system can absolutely be useful. If they end up printing too much bracket 4 shit, idk, have the cEDH folks cry about that with their proxies.
If the bracket 4 stuff gets out of hand, you know, you can easily just play lower brackets. That's the big benefit. If cards are too crazy, just say "ok, no bracket 4 cards".

We all know that certain cards only show up in premium products. You are saying "they are not going to print degenerate cards just to ban them..." We know! They will just keep printing degenerate cards, use them to sell product, and relegate them to the 4 point bracket. None of the overpowered and pushed cards we can point to are hypotheticals. They are all real and none were banned by WotC, but by the RC. This isn't a conspiracy theory. This is a business model. Beezy, I totally agree that those threats by people are uncalled for. That's obvious to me. But to just take Wotc at their word, to say to us that "hey wotc won't do that bad thing because they SAID they won't do that bad thing" is full of problems. You have to realize that, don't you? That's just not a well-formed argument. Also, and this is not even close to conspiracy theorizing... it's not even far fetched to say that wotc predicted this outcome. They all knew how people might react with a ban like this. They've seen card-owners react in toxic ways in the past. It's really just a repeat of history, behaviorally speaking.

I also get a feeling that it was overblown a bit, just to justify WotC taking over. It was very bizarre how the Commander committee suddenly banned several of the most valuable cards (which would guarantee a negative response from the community) without even telling the CAG, then immediatley WotC swoops in and takes control . . . already with rules on how they want to run them in place. Very suspicious . . . >

Yeah because a company has never lied to our faces before. " of course they didn't want it"
5:09 that is exactly what the rules committee and CAG were.
I don't think you meant to do this but you really sounded like you were talking in circles circles this video. I understand the words that were said I understand the sentiment but the meaning behind it I was confused. The CAG and the rules committee dissolved and wizards got control and they're setting up another CAG the exact same way it was before and they're trying to make it sound like it's new and better it'll be exactly as it was before just with different faces. They had a small group of members they had a variety of people from different competitiveness within the game. So what's going to be different other than new faces?
9:17 Arcane Signet was a mistake? OK OK, THEN WHY MAKE JEWLED LOTUS?
I don't know how you can have such unquestionable faith for a company. It's not bad or wrong to be hesitant about this situation or question it.
Also I'm not sure why you're talking as if they are going to make sweeping changes tomorrow, anyone with some common sense knows that won't happen it'll be slowly and over time. Also any cards they make now with their unfettered control won't see the light of day for a year or more unless they take some Nadu style mistakes along the way.

      JEWLED LOTUS
A card by the way which they were explicitly told/begged not to print by people they consulted about it (JLK told his story several times now).
Obviously, there wasn't a rules commitee on WotC's side until now, but there sure were consultants. This is nothing new.
Anyone who thinks Wizards is concerned about anything but their bottom line is just living in a naive dream world.
Of course they want to keep the format stable - why disrupt the money printing machine.
The rules commitee didn't do much for the past few years... last thing I remember is the Lutri ban. And that's exactly how WotC wants it to stay.
Slowly but steadily creeping power level and prices.
Remember the Walking Dead Secret lair? WotC promised to never print limited availabilty exclusive cards again.
Which worked great - right until they started releasing them as entire sets. But at that point, nobody cared anymore.
People are quick to anger and have a bad memory. No matter how much we disagree with any given descision - sooner or later the addiction kicks in.
Other than the (former) Rules Commitee, Wizards are well aware that you can do anything, if you are willing to weather the storm for a bit.

So, as someone who’s been a little doomsday about this situation, I do think the accusations of price fixing, bots, and power grabs are insane. My concern is that corporations have shown themselves to be extremely eager to ruin IPs/game for profit. I wholeheartedly believe that WoTC does not want to do stuff like this. But I do think that as times goes on Hasbro will continue to sink their “line must go up” claws into Magic. They’ve already made lots of statements about how undermonetized DND was and they only backed down from a lot of gross behavior because of massive community backlash. And they’ve shown a willingness to flood the market with pushed cards and FOMO products already. I don’t think they’ll print to ban, but they will obviously make more power creep mistakes like they have for years. I am hopeful about the future of the game but I am always leary of consolidation of resources under profit driven corporations, especially if it was previously completely controlled by the community. That being said, the community showed its whole ass with death threats so this is what happens. Hopefully things get better over time! But we do need to watch out for greedy greedsters.

I think people doom posting about conspiracies of wotc wanting to take over the rc or how they'll make overpowered cards and not ban them need to stop and realize that's what was happening already with the rules committee. The RC did so little overall that wotc basically was already in control, and because the format is already so casual if they go too wild with the banlist you can rule 0 it. Overall I look forward to their rule, the argument that they'll make more broken cards is stupid because they've already been doing it the entire time. I'm hoping they maybe hit older busted cards and possibly some of the more extremely powerful staples, but at worst I see this being incredibly mild change in leadership.

I feel like there is one simple solution to the bans. Errata. Rerelease the 3 banned cards but with +3 to their casting mana cost. For mana crypt make the coin flip happen when you tap it for mana. For dockside give it a “once per turn” line of text. For Jeweled lotus have it enter tapped. Even sol ring could use an errata with “enters tapped” added to it. Reprint the 3 banned cards with their errata at Rare or Uncommon, print errata sol ring into the dirt to give away with every precon purchase to replace the Sol ring in the precon if it’s an older precon. Done. Everyone except investors are now relatively happy.

Its definitely not on the same level as lotus/mox/mana crypt shenanigans though.

That is bad advice. WotC has proven they do not deserve my trust through their own actions. Overall, if more power creep happens and if it's turning me off, I suppose some stuff that's going to be considered a 4 now (once things settle) may just become considered 3-like in my brain (or I may headcanon a 5 bracket -- although I'm well aware of the advantages of splitting things like this into quartiles rather than quintiles given the 7 problem; you need to be cautious about thete being a miffle, median sort of category to be laxly declared rather than falling either above or below key lines with some room for nuance), and we'll go from there.

Many of these commander players are going to other card games such as poker, spade, gin rummy because well these clubs are popping up everywhere. You can run a poker tournament with no money. Also sadly folks are tired of the drama/cliques of magic players. Sad but true the behavior many magic player exhibited showed why many folks play in private pods because folks do not know how to act.

Refreshing to hear a reasoned take that isn't overly cynical, I can expect nothing short of that from this channel. Thanks for being a level headed voice in the community.
I dont exactly like the bracket system. I think any deck power rating system that makes sense can't really be defined by a single card, and also can't vary on a scale of 1-4, many things falling into 1,2, and 3 are not at all made equal. I hope those aspects see improvement. They have to understand that any system that doesn't actually communicate accurately won't be picked up by the player base, and I'm sure they do.
